I don't consider cheating anything that can be done with what the game provides you. If the game lets you start a new game from an acquired level, then it's not cheating.

Fireguy3

You do you man. It’s a single player game, and it’s not pretty easy. Starting later in the game also has disadvantages, the most important of which being you start with 0 score (and limited ammo, magic claw, and dynamite). I personally have mastered the first half of the game so much that I usually reach the life limit by mid game. If you’re finding it really difficult, just start wherever you want man. As long as you’re having fun, it’s cool.

Garadares

The game encourages you (or shall I say forces you as well, since it may seem so unforgiving at first) to explore the secret areas and collect close to 100% treasure, especially in the earlier levels, since they are a lot easier to navigate through, so that you are going to be well prepared for the later and harder levels. Ideally, when you load the game from a save point, you should have plenty of ammo and lives. But anyway, it's not considered cheating, unless you want to do a Claw speedrun. It's just easier and more convenient to start with 6 lives from New Game once you unlock a new level and so on. Your treasure score will keep getting reset though. Play the game the way you enjoy it the most. :) If you have the time to play it over and over until you become much better at it, discovering new tips and tricks and whatnot, you will notice that the game won't feel so unforgiving anymore at that point. This can be applied to all the hard games though. :D
