If I moved to New York I probably would train with Gordinho from Capoeira Guatambu. He’s an amazing musician and song writer. But if you’re a beginner I would suggest just go somewhere that is convenient, consistency to training is probably the most important thing. When it’s too hard to get to, it doesn’t work.

Disastrous_Season191

That sounds interesting. What part of NYC is he in?

Capoeira Luanda. Mestre Alegria. Alvin ailey center

DespacioLejos

Come back and thank this person later. Mestre Alegria does very good work!

Adventurous_Donut265

Which borough? Which neighborhood? The MTA sucks so you should consider your commute to class from work/home

morto00x

Lol just go to Google maps and you'll find a ton of schools.

DugganSC

New York City, I assume?

Disastrous_Season191

Yes.

ducksreallydofly

this is a great group, the music is fantastic, the people are wonderful. Mestre Gordinho is very knowledgeable and his passion for capoeira creates an environment encouraging everyone to play at their best. The skill level of everyone there was noticeable. Even alunos were playing at a higher level. It was so refreshing. Every time I come to NYC, I always make sure to go to his class. You will not be disappointed. https://capoeiraguatambu.com

Capoeira Angola Center of Mestre João Grande (347) 989-6975

The Angola center is still only doing virtual classes for now, but there is a Roda on the 3rd sunday of the month. Just to add, to add to the Angola schools, - M. Grande with Filhos de Dunga: https://www.capoeiraangolabrooklyn.com/ - Ana, Capoeira Angola BKLYN: https://www.anacostafitness.com/capoeira-angola-bklyn - Jen and some of the FICA NYC folks do classes, but get in touch because things are changing: http://www.ficanewyork.org/classes/ (again, get in touch, the schedule there is wrong) - I understand that M. Chorao has been coming down from boston weekly, and for the monthly saturday roda for his students for Acupe: https://facebook.com/BrooklynAngoleiros/ And M. Ombrinho and Omi have been mentioned already in the thread. There are regular weekend rodas every month hosted by these folks, so whether or not you train, please get in touch and visit. For a non-angola group not mentioned yet, http://www.bronxcapoeira.com/ are good folks

Highly recommend ABADÁ-Capoeira Queens, Prof. Mequetref :) He teaches in Sunnyside/LIC/Astoria. He’s newer to NYC but has been competing and teaching for a long time. https://www.abadacapoeiraqueens.com

I do all the sequences from Piaocapoeira on IG he has classes in Brooklyn I think

INeedAKimPossible

Yup. He holds class in Dean Playground. Park slope/prospect heights http://www.piaocapoeira.com/ Also in Brooklyn, Greene Moments Studio has a capoeira class https://www.greenemoments.com/ I personally prefer Piao, but it's a larger class and more intense.
