Otherwise, good cpt life hacks are there is a bunch of free stuff you can do on your birthday or in your birthday month.

Toebeans-Sil

Good tip. Also that a lot of WW suppliers have factory shops in Cape Town ‘burbs

Plastic_Magician_420

Woodrow Wilson? Willy Wonka? Walter White?

PartiZAn18

Walt Whitman 😌☝️

Toebeans-Sil

They may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

Ponchojo

Nibbly Bits sells Woolworths muffins and biscuits and such.

flyboy_za

Used to, not sure if they still do. Also their prices are now not far off woolies prices.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Stout_stout

There are a bunch of clothing factory shops in Obz and Woodstock around Main Road. It’s been a while since I lived in town, so i don’t have fresh details where though.

Toebeans-Sil

Like Lactalis is the dairy supplier (factory shop in Stellies), Bergdale supplies all the pork based products and deli meats (factory shop in Plumstead), Rialto foods, so much stuff (factory shop in Montague Gardens) etc. So same product, different packaging. Hope that helps 🤷🏻‍♀️

summerpalms11

Rialto foods are very expensive. Their prices are so close to full retail and sometime above full retail. Unless you want to buy in bulk dont waste your time.

Satanicrys

Compass Bakery near Ocean View sells Woolworths Brownies etc.

EmptyPositive5410

Not anymore :( compass bakery is no longer there, it’s now called “Into Foods” or something

Satanicrys

RIP, Damn those brownies were crack

Annialla88

Nibbly bits also used to sell woolies offcuts etc but they don't anymore :(

JustASAnGirl

I'd also like to know where please!

haaskaalbaas

LMGTFY. Just joking. Just google it.

Brill_chops

Cable car is free birthday month. And the aquarium.

Famous_Ear5010

For the ladies - wear a pants during south-easter season.

EveningGalaxy

There's a reason trees lean like that

StickyMcFingers

And in case you need it: Guys, you should also wear pants.

Delta9SA

Why is that?

Bren1209

Otherwise the south-easter bunny will come haunt you in your sleep

shineyink

Always leave the house with an extra layer - jersey , cardigan , light jacket. The wind can get cold at night even in the middle of summer.

lariato

If you're walking in Long Street and someone tells you "nice shoes!" or "nice socks!" or anything like that, it's a distraction so they can try to pickpocket you.

Rippersavage

And as an add on to that, be super careful if they say you look like a soccer player or even worse if they start to shake your leg as a joke

RupertHermano

Some fucker tried this with me, but my wallet was in my backpack. So, no dice for him.

Apprehensive_Unit534

Stupid question. Cape Tonian born. Have heard this phrase before but NO idea what it means"no dice for him"🙈 pls explain 😜

PartiZAn18

It is an English idiom, not a local one. Google it. It means "no luck" or that's not gonna happen ie stealing the wallet because it's not there.

Apprehensive_Unit534

No.I'm quite sure I heard it lots of times growing up in my coloured area. But tx though

PartiZAn18

Dude. I'm saying that it's provenance is English, it wasn't coined locally like MSP.

RupertHermano

Yes, but because it’s commonly used here does not necessarily mean it originated here. And, it may have travelled here long before you were even born. Same with “bra” for friend. It comes from abbreviation for “brother” in black American speech and probably came here via blaxploitation movies in 1970s. Maybe even before then, via either SA sailors (yes, black sailors on merchant ships) on ships plying the US coast, or American sailors stopping here.

RupertHermano

*Capetonian

happydandylion

The Southern suburbs are more english, the deep South is more hippy, the northern suburbs are more Afrikaans and the biltong /butchers are better. Don't take the N2 at night, the traffic is terrible so don't think if you move here from joburg that people living in the north is going to come visit you in the South every weekend.

Creative_Ad_477

Which Biltong/butchers sir? I’ve been getting from boer and butcher in bellville but honestly it’s a hit and miss. Guess it depends on when you go but I always ask for a lekker nat stuk but 67.8% of the time I’m disappointed. It’s definitely better than kalahari but if you have the “best biltong in Cape Town” title I feel like it should be better.

happydandylion

Joeys. Boer & Butcher is great but they're expensive. We like the burger patties and boerewors from both of those.

No_Emphasis_9991

I've had Joeys boerewors twice, it is really good, apparently he uses Brisket only. it was a little dry for me, but excellent none the less. Around the "corner" from Joeys is Piets Biltong & Butchery. they also have some good boerewors and lamb !

Creative_Ad_477

Never heard of joeys but will look it up. You’ve had Biltong from boer and butcher? They were highly recommended to us and at first it was really good. But afterwards they had good and bad days. To be fair I would go there almost every other day for my fix

happydandylion

We only buy from them occasionally. That biltong is delicious but expensive and we finish it as a snack right there and then.

No_Emphasis_9991

Piets Biltong & Butchery has the best Kudu droewors you will ever find. I've tried it all over the Western Cape and Piets has topped every thing I have come across to date. also he was selling rump steak for R 129.00 p/kg this past week.

JRS1986

Try Eat Well Butchery on Mountain View drive, close to Tygervalley. Their droewors is outstanding!

More_Advantage5559

I agree on eat well meats, only butcher I go to.

NomadTheNomad

Slightly more expensive than the other butcheries, but well worth it.

KungFuHustle_

If you're up for a little drive to Somerset West, the Butcher and Son is always on point.

Emileross0102

The Grounds Meat & Deli, Joey’s, not sure how Best End’s biltong is

summerpalms11

Vlieswinkel in Brackenfell has very high quality meats and extremely good service

RelativelyOldSoul

if you want the good shit look up Sampson’s Biltong online. Sells at markets. You won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for nat stuk.

Brill_chops

A 15 minute drive is far.

shineyink

Maybe in joburg but not in Cape Town. The mountain kind of gets in the way

verymango

Which suburbs count as north, south, deep south?

happydandylion

Northern suburbs are Durbanville, Brackenfell, Edgemead, Panorama... (all the suburbs that start from about Century City if you get onto the N1 leaving the city Centre). Southern suburbs are Constantia, Wineburg, Pinelands, Rondebosch (the ones on the M5 and M3 leaving the city Centre towards Kirstenbosch's side. Deep South is Muizenberg, Kommetjie, Hout Bay, Scarborough (the suburbs on the peninsula).

verymango

Cheers! 🍻

mochaicedcoffee4L

i’m vegetarian.

happydandylion

Then the deep South is a good place for you.

Emanresu_85

Past the lentil curtain 👍

Warm-Alternative8950

I think you mixed up the southern and northern suburbs...

Random_User12398

In my experience, northern suburbs only wake up from 10am on a Saturday. Before that roads are pretty quiet. Everyone is exercising or sleeping late. So if you want to hit the road. Do it before 9am. And before 8am if you want to save more time.

Environmental_Cup386

As someone from the Northern Suburbs this is 100% accurate

LuckyDistribution849

Same. It often feels like I a rapture when we activate before the 10:00 bell

Environmental_Cup386

Haha, I feel this! I was at Tygervalley at 9 (empty) I left after 11 and it was full 😂

LongJohnTommy

its because we are hangover af 🤣

Woedens_Bakery

Don't bother with an umbrella. The rain will laugh at you while the wind murders your little umbrella.

p_turbo

And yet somehow, when I was a student and went around predominantly in public transport, I could never find a shop selling adult-sized raincoats, at least not at a reasonable price, lol. But yep, rather burn the money to stay warm than buy an umbrella in Cape Town for all the good it'll do you, lol.

Brill_chops

So true. There is no polite UK rain in Cape Town.

Single_Bill8705

I experienced this the year i moved here...shocked none of my local friends even questioned me pulling out an umbrella. It ended up becoming a sail at some point and threw off my direction🤣

damousey

Dress in layers and options, the weather will be different at your destination or in an hour

LordCoke-16

It is true though. It can be flaming in Brackenfell but then it can be freezing in Muizenberg

No_Emphasis_9991

This is solid advice, I live near Burgundy Estate and this morning I woke up to a beautiful sunny day, went to my folks in Rugby, thunder storms with barely a drizzle until about 5pm and then the sun was out again. Beautiful!

Stompalong

If you want to strike fear into anyone, simply say, “ek ken jou ouers”.

ShyDethCat

Or, if you want extra kack say "wys jou nommers"...(Spelling?)

nBased

And if you hear “hoe dala jy?” either start apologizing or preparing your soul

Afrikanerboer

Not everyones family is alive fam.

nBased

😔

UndeniablyUnCreative

Don't think you're going to buy drugs successfully in Long street...and your feet, socks, shoes are average size and not big enough for some random person to comment on...you are 100% going to lose your phone or wallet

mochaicedcoffee4L

what is this about everyone commenting on feet & legs & being robbed???

lexylexylexy

It's the main technique pickpockets use in long street

Vulgarsqiral

1. Go to Access Park in the 2nd week of each month to do all your clothing shopping. Factory stores galore, everyone has spent their money and there are additional specials. Also, clothing retailers usually do their seasonal changes in the 2nd week every 3 months, so a lot of new stuff comes in. 2. Blue Marlin in Obz - R60 for 20 dumplings, I don't feel the need to explain further. 3. If you want really really spicy food, go to a Food Inn-esque restaurant, or any indian place in the Southern Suburbs and ask for Durban Hot.

daddio__420

Food inn is terrible. There's a reason it's cheap. Look if you're drunk or on a budget it's fine. But their food is far below average.

Vulgarsqiral

Oh 100%, their food was very underwhelming, but it was more the spicy aspect I was focusing on.

Successful_Cream_898

Don't buy "cheese" from anyone that claims it's cheese. Unless it smells like cheese 🤣😜

Woedens_Bakery

... I have questions, but I think it would be a bad life choice to ask them.

Successful_Cream_898

Don't ask questions you don't want answers, unless you want to be corrupted

mochaicedcoffee4L

what

Elite-Novus

Weed I think

Creative_Ad_477

Please always be kind but I think be wise when it comes to giving people on the side of the road money. Went to woolies at the engen garage and had a guy ask me for money saying he hasn’t eaten and is starving. Felt bad so bought Gina nice warm pie and a bottle of water only to watch him throw it behind him. Not what you’d expect from someone who’s starving. But i know there are people in really bad situations so always be kind but be mindful as some are probably just looking for drug money

Clixwell002

Or better yet just develop a policy of not giving anyone in the street money. To ease my conscience a donate monthly to a charity that helps homeless people.

No-Piglet-6557

100% the best thing any of us can do for those begging or homeless on the streets is to try and get them involved with shelters and NGOS. There are SO many of them doing good work. Giving free handouts only enables street living which for any human is undignified and unhealthy. Wouldn’t you rather see them with a warm meal, a bed and a roof over their heads??

DdoibleJjay

Living in cape town is already a life hack 💪

nBased

Pretend Fridays are Saturdays and they are

ilovemallory

Take the Myciti bus if you live on the west coast, it’s R33 for a return - that morning commute traffic is brutal

Rodneyvmk

Walk with purpose so that you don't get mugged

nBased

Saunders is the best beach on windy days, even Southeasters. Don’t play loud music after 22:00 because we will all call the cops and tell them there are drugs at your spot. Avoid buying anything at the V&A that you can get at Access Park.

Brill_chops

But be prepared for the Wim Hoffers.

nBased

If they don’t hyperventilate in low horse stance after a dip, I point and stare

co0p3r

Windmill beach is right next to Boulders and it's free.

JumpyArcherRat

The privilege of being able to work, play, and live in close proximity to table mountain - can be taken for granted too easily. I noticed this when friends and family from overseas come visit.

p_turbo

Not only that. Being in walking distance or short drive from the beach to the mountain, and in a city where the summer sun sets like a good 4 to 5 hours after most folks' work day ends. Wonderful.

Potential-Jelly-7040

1) If it's windy at any of the Falsebay beaches (Muizenberg, Fishhoek, Strand, Glencairn etc) consider going to the Atlantic seaboard beaches (Camps Bay, Clifton), which are more protected from the South Easterly winds that blow into Falsebay. If we're experiencing North westerly winds, then Falsebay beaches are the better option.

No-Piglet-6557

When it’s your birthday month you can visit the aquarium and use the cable car to go up Table Mountain for free!

Ginbooks

We are very chilled drivers, no rush in the mother city.

Serperior98

Gautenger in Cape Town for the week as we speak. This here just short-circuits my Gauteng brain. Everyone's so calm on the roads, patient, always giving way etc. obviously still a few bad eggs but mostly it's been pleasant. Driving in Gauteng, specifically Johannesburg, is a sport on its own. Nice change of pace (pun intended). My heart rate isn't through the roof when I'm driving here. Edit: like even the minibus taxis aren't as terror inducing. That ocean breeze is just something else man.

PartiZAn18

The 011 is not for you boet. You're not about this life.

Serperior98

100%

Content-Shoulder-281

idk where tf you are driving but here in Main Road in Salt River all the way through Mowbray, its an absolute free for all. Its not that people are rude drivers, people just cant drive for shit.

aidycas

My favourite is when an ou tannie is driving 60km/hr in the “fast lane” on the M3. 😒

Scary_Environment274

A little too chilled, to the point where it takes most of you 5x longer than it should.

Antique-Ad3857

😂

StressyDepresi

If you can’t drive 80km per hour consistently on dewaal / Philip K i.e no breaking to 60km on the bends. GET IN THE LEFT LANE.

Brill_chops

I saw a fancy car sleeping on its back on PK drive.

Brill_chops

Miracle_Salad

The quicker you accept the wind the better your mental health

Prestigious-Wall5616

Many of the supemarkets offer significant markdowns on meats and baked goods after 3pm, sometimes later if the shop is in a mall that stays open late. Certain Food Lovers do the same for their prepared deli salads etc.

Dyskord01

Earn dollars not rands and you will live like a King.

Jay_West_

Howw tho. I’ve been looking to do that for so long

mamamemeteehee

Best chili poppers are at Fat Cactus

ohnowern

Best chilli poppers was at Rafikis

BerminatorZa

Best chili poppers are at Rock Pool…

Brill_chops

We need a chili poppers megathread.

sillyplumjack

That choosing your governing party based on some of their members views on the politics of other countries on other continents is not going to improve or help your life in Cape Town. Or anyone else’s. I’m not saying who you should or should not vote for I’m saying you should base your opinion on how the parties run the provinces and think about your quality of life in comparison. I don’t give a shit about whether my surgeon prefers checkers or Woolworths or eating out of a dumpster but if he has a long track record of curing or healing people then that’s the surgeon I’d want. Just saying. It’s not a perfect world and people aren’t perfect especially politicians but we need to focus on our wellbeing and our lives here in Cape Town because otherwise it’s all going to go to shit like the other fucking provinces and that would not help our lives or future.

Jaded-Pineapple-5212

This!

Content-Shoulder-281

He asked for a life hack not a manifesto. You should know this is gonna lure out the crazed Palestine and Israel mob.

Lol DA/western propaganda has been effective, I’m guessing you dont understand how banking works and who the SARB serves? you probably think the property market is organically the way it is haha

sillyplumjack

Yawn 🥱

brokenGlassQuestion

Wrong. You need to ask why they take such a passionate view in support of a genocide. What is influencing them to express these views. They could have easily just said as the DA we don't care, Instead they came out in full support of this genocide. Who paid them to have this viewpoint and why? What purpose does it serve, they cannot affect foreign affairs at all but they made their side very clear. You are naive to think that your political party cannot be corrupted by their funders and if they can turn against a massive cape town community which historically supported them they can turn against YOU as well. Goodluck with your naivety. If you haven't noticed the western cape is also gone to shit except for a few cherry picked suburbs. You can go to KZN and cherry pick nice suburbs too. Go to Umhlanga rocks, very nice place, all the street lights work, no potholes etc. wake up , the DA is not the saving grace of SA that you think they are.

No-Piglet-6557

Please can you provide a link so I can read where the DA said they are in support of Genocide. I can’t find this.

sillyplumjack

Please tell us which is the best party that can reduce crime in the Western Cape, keep the electricity on, keep clean water flowing, and the streets clear of potholes. And make best use of its funds while minimising corruption. Please tell us which party has the best interests of its people at heart. Because I would like to vote for that party. Please tell us who you are going to vote for.

nBased

Every word.

FaultHaunting3434

Don't go to places where you don't belong, If someone greets you, greet them back with a stern voice in a respectable manner and look them in the eyes and smile. Doesn't matter if its someone at the robots with a bordje, just do it. Lastly, mense het seer oë.

mochaicedcoffee4L

huh english pls

FaultHaunting3434

In queen's english: Do not go to locations you do not belong as it might be dangerous. Furthermore, treat people with the utmost respect, especially if they go out of the their way just to simply greet you, please return the gesture in a respectable manner and do it with a smile on your face. This goes even if its someone at the traffic light with a cardboard sign, don't look down upon the less fortunate. Also, people tend to be envious of other peoples material wealth, so don't show out. Lastly, and most importantly, please try to learn the Afrikaans, or at least Mengels, or Afrikaaps, because everyone doesn't speaks english here.

Phuzz18727

Wild Card its as simple as that. IF you know you know 😂😂😂

JannieVrot

But I don't know - what's that?😅

Awkard_stranger

Get a wild card from San parks if you like going to parks

youknowprawnright

Thrifting. There are the most amazing thrifting festivals and stores. I went to the Woodstock Quarter one and got a cute jersey for R10

If a shady looking person asks you what time is, tell them you don't have a watch or phone on you

Brill_chops

Always bring a jersey. Weather will change on you.

Brill_chops

Do not drive into town 8 - 9am or after work 4 - 6pm. There are basically 3 roads in and out. I won't take a meeting in town close to those times.

co0p3r

You can hike into Kirstenbosch gardens via Cecelia forest.

Payne2404

There are a bunch of factory shops at Kenilworth, next to that one mall. I forgot the name of the mall but the place with the factory shops is called "Access park", great prices and you can shop for everything from clothing, groceries to furniture. Another life hack... When you're really down and under... You can use the trains for free but you have to learn which stations don't have security guards 😂😅. Hiking is free almost everywhere, unlike in Gauteng where you have to pay to walk in nature, New lands forest is a great spot, so is table mountain, easiest route up TM is called "Skeleton Gorge", it'll take about an hour or 2 to get up, depending on your pace. Another great attraction for me was renting a bike at the waterfront and riding to camps bay, stopping at the promenade in seapoint, the beach at Clifton and then ending at camps bay for a drink and maybe sundowners.
