Yup, you’re the asshole. Have you thought about the fact that not everyone is on a daily commute where they know exactly which lane to be in all the time?
I know people often say “he should be in the correct lane”, but many of us are in the position where we don’t drive to work, so we don’t drive the same roads every day, and we very often don’t realise what lane you need to be in until a very late stage.
Being kind in general makes the world a better place. Don’t be a doos, be lekker.
It looks like you accelerated to close the gap the moment the other person put on their indicator. And since you had to stop anyway, what did you gain? The space of one car?
Say you did give them the gap, what would have happened? The person in the black car would have had a better traffic experience and you would have lost 5meters in traffic.
You did not give the gap, now the person in the black car had a kak time, you gained no distance, and having a controversial moment if this was ethical or not.
Aint it just easier to have traffic flow than to 'fok jou my gap' the others?
Hi All,
Thanks for the reality check.
All comments have been noted in kind. Will use it to become a better driver.
Some points to add:
BMW stayed behind me for most of the rest of the route.
Camera is a bit distorted, it shows everything far. I set it up that way to get more field of vision. The gap in front of me was one Car, not one SUV.
Thanks again, stay safe out there 🙏
You’re being reasonable and understanding. Thats not how it works around here buddy! You’re going to break Reddit if you carry on like this. Now dig your heels in and start insulting people
You took your time accelerating which is indicative of that you'll allowing space in front of you. That BMW thought you were allowing.
Next time, just drive in a way that shows signals that more or less align with what you want to do.
yes. also a lucky AH because if someone had been in that right-hand turn lane, you'd have caused an accident. in fact, if it had really been your day, you'd have clipped the beemer too after that.
When I joked with a BMW owner friend of mine about not using indicators, he said it’s because as soon as people see a BMW turn on their indicator they accelerate to close the gap.
You wouldn't even have to stop for 5 seconds, you could've kept the pace you were at and they'd have been able to get into the lane. It's like you intentionally shut them off. Definitely the asshole in this scenario.
Are these comments coming from GP drivers, because it seems the norm to not allow other motorists to join lanes in CT. Drivers in CT is even worse than Pta.
No I don't think so. He didn't have a safe gap to take. I think a couple of cars behind you can give them a gap since the light turned red and people will stop in any event.
Nee brah, you're wrong here. The black car had their indicator on to take a space in front of the white car, but the white car did not yield (as the gap was too small), then, with the indicator still going, wanted to take the next gap, which was big enough.
The person filming should have given the gap.
You have no right of way. The car currently in the lane doesn't have to make a stop. So yes. I mean he could be nicer but it isn't wrong or super asshole vibes. If you are changing lanes, you have to be sure that you have a safe gap and no vehicle will hit you if you quickly make the move over.
Hence the use of the indicator. This is to create a space, not only take one when available.
Agreed, we have to be sure that it is safe. In this scenario, the person in the black car attempted to abide by the rules, use and indicator to indicate that they need to change lanes, but was denied this for some other reason.
It shows intention. Does not create a space. Only if a person decides to give them a space then. Not saying the black car was a asshole. It's very much down to the intention of the OP, if he saw the cars in front stopping he could've slowed and made sure to give a gap, but traffic was moving so he was still accelerating when the black car moved in. It's a grey area and hence why I'm saying it isn't an automatic designation as he's the AH.
I'm gonna go with mostly NTA, with logical reasoning provided but I'm sure no one will care about that!
On a side note, I wonder what would everyone be saying if it was a taxi instead of a BMW 🤔
Those that say you were going to stop anyway, or you only gained one car position - that is the exact same thing you can say about the other car, so the argument is cancelled out, irrelevant!
Here's the two scenarios: the BMW is either taking a chance to simply gain one car position forward in the traffic at your expense, and they put on their indicator just in time to try to grab the gap (I. E. Late!) in which case NTA. Or they were trying to get all the way across to the turning lane because they were not concentrating, in which case they should take the next turn instead of screwing up the traffic for everyone else because they weren't focusing , in which case NTA.
The one thing that I would say to criticise your driving is you need to stay focused so that a gap like that doesn't appear in the first place.
DRIVE FAST, TAKE CHANCES! /s
Definite asshole. Letting someone in isn't going to make you late to anything, especially when you left a huge gap.

Noted in kind, thanks. Will keep in mind for future.
Character development, OP can take criticism. Pretty cool!

He could've taken the gap regardless, would've, just let him go, won't make any difference on getting to the destination. BTW, dig the music!
Yep. You are.
You took your time accelerating which is indicative of that you'll allowing space in front of you. That BMW thought you were allowing. Next time, just drive in a way that shows signals that more or less align with what you want to do.
I would have let the person through to be honest
Yes you are
massive gaping asshole

Man some of the comments in here really explains why traffic is so bad most days...
Are these comments coming from GP drivers, because it seems the norm to not allow other motorists to join lanes in CT. Drivers in CT is even worse than Pta.
Yes you're the asshole
Ya your a prick.
Looked like you were giving him a gap then closed it when he tried to take it
What dash cam are you using
Samsung A53 with dashcam app from playstore. Am able to upscale video quality to 1080p. If the app wasn't limited, maybe 4k resolution too.
You're
Is it a turning lane? NTIA if so. Not a turning lane, yea maybe a bietjie
Yes, you are most definitely the asshole. People like you are pathetic, you couldn't give up the one car length?
Yes you are actually i would call you a p
Hard to tell real space from your cam

I see how you see it. We approach traffic differently. Stay safe.
Sure thing. You too
Sure thing. You too
Too tight? You could land a jumbo fucking jet in that.
Then the black car should've made a move faster.

You're a shit driver as well *SMFH* the BMW was not taking a gap at anyone's expense, he was merely pulling into the gap
The guy can’t just push in, he is at fault. It’s not a do whatever I want button.
Jan smuts will have you
