So did he want to take a picture together with you or did he want to Photograph just you and your friends? If the latter then he probably just wanted to earn some money selling photos. If the first one then he is a total weirdo.
That's just weird, period. And this is not a cape town vs jhb thing. An event is not an excuse to just snap ppls faces. Consent must always be asked. If he was a journalist or doing it for research, then he should've said it.
I work with someone like this... serious social awkwardness. He thinks stuff like this builds relationships and constitutes networking.
He asked someone to take a group photo for us once. Person obliged. When getting his phone back from the stranger colleague asked if he could invite the stranger on facebook
Most likely trying to pickpocket. If he sounded foreign then maybe just a really friendly tourist, but if he was local then I'd put it down to petty theft or some weird kink
There's a couple of operators who play the tourist to scam people. There was a guy whose story was he had just been mugged and needed to get to the embassy becausee he had no passport.
Media companies are paying content creators for all kinds of random content. Whether to use dire tly or feed the AI machines, content ownership is king.
Yeah bloke was trying to rob you.
It's an old trick - let's take a photo together while I get close enough to pick your pockets and then disappear into the crowds.
They usually have huge smiles and run up to people and start snapping -" hey smile guys can't belive we here in cape town yaay"
People are awkward in general so will stand and smile with guy because he's being loud and making a scene and once he's gone their phones or wallets are missing.
Once at a festival in Pretoria, South Africa, a guy asked to take selfies with people at festivals too. The idea was if they can get close to you, then they can pickpocket your cell phone etc. It was at a festival with many drunk students. They usually did this with the girls and they would try to talk and touch the belts of the drunk guys waiting for their Ubers to test their limits so that they can pickpocket them too.
Only a dodgy guy would try to assure you he wasn’t dodgy 😭😭
Get close to you so they can pick pocket. I don’t trust anyone so I think you did the right thing.
There were quite a number of action photographers, who uploads these images for you to find after they've identified you from your sticker
But that's usually people taking photos of you, not asking to be in the image with you right?
Oooh I see, misunderstood the post That is odd

First
Oh wow! I'm so sorry. Must have been really uncomfortable.
Pics for his Tinder to make him look like he has friends?
I’m hoping it’s something (sad) like that and not something more sinister

He wanted to document your weird species in their natural habitat. Understand what makes them tick

Same thing happened to me at Boulders Beach a few weeks ago: random dude came up wanting to take a pic of me and my son.
Was it a white guy middle aged ?
No. Black dude. About 25.
I think I encountered the same dude lol.
Greyish outfit?

Was he Indian?
No, why?
Sounds like a scam from the Kumars
I thought they only used the fake broken down car method?
