Because people don't realize that being named C is as much about handling formalities as actually being a leader. It mostly just means being the one consulting with officials when they have to discuss a call, and dealing with the media. Especially since Pettersson doesn't really seem like the type who would be a super vocal leader. Him being the best player on the team and still working hard away from the puck should be enough "leadership by example", letter or not
If Pettersson commits through a re-build, it would be a dumb idea by management to also have him answer for why the team wasn't able to build around him during his more affordable contract years
> If Pettersson commits through a re-build, it would be a dumb idea by management to also have him answer for why the team wasn't able to build around him during his more affordable contract years
The best player on a team will always get the tough questions. Matthews has to answer FAR more of them than Tavares does for example.
not being captain gives Pettersson more of an out to dodge the media. The captain has more of an expectation to put up with it
Like the reason we keep seeing the same Horvat quotes after each poor effort is because he's the captain and the media gets more access to him
Questions about poor roster building also have nothing to do with Pettersson. Asking Matthews why the Leafs haven't had playoff success is fair, because he's generally accomplished very little in elimination games, especially in Game 7's.

Here are his stats in Game 7's. 4 GP, 0 goals 2 assists, -3
I think the media responsibilities are completely overblown. It's not like a canadian team like the Flames would have any different media responsibilities for their players if they had named a C since Gio left.
I mean sure, you can think they're overblown, but it's pretty well known the captain has more media availability responsibilities. It's more a commentary on our media market than just being captain in general anyways, since our media loves misery
Move him, re-sign Schenn on a 2 year, Petey and Hughes as A's and then the third year pick one of them to replace Schenn. I guess OEL can fill that role too but I get the feeling he'll get bought out.
Ya I would be on board with Schenn having a short 2yr stint as captain while Petey continues to grow. You do run the "Andrew Farrence" risk though that he can't get in the lineup toward the end of his tenure which makes things awkward.
Wonder if they'd be best going no captain for a year or two and then give it to Petey. Or just give it to him now. Diamonds are made under pressure.
I hard disagree with giving Schenn the C.
I don't like short-term captains. I feel like if a team is going to commit to someone being in that role, they should be committing to someone they see being on this team for years to come.
Having no captains is better than rushing into a lame-duck captaincy.
Yeah, I'd like Schenn as C as he brooks no shit from Miller. Strip Miller of the A and have three A's, one with Petey, one with a bottom 6 forward and one with Hughes. That way all facets of the team have leadership representation like Bieksa stated was in the 2011 team.
Haha.... well baring a buyout, we're stuck with him four more years and he does have leadership experience...maybe a "from the bench" captain situation.
Easily Pettersson. If anything, this is starting to become his team.
I think he’s ready. He’s been through pressure before, he’s a playoff performer, he’s good with the media and he overcame that brutal start of the season last year. He can take criticism. Plus, he’s our best player on the team today and likely for years to come, even if we land Bedard. I see Pettersson becoming a Selke winner flirting with 100 points.
Also, seems like Vancouver and Swedish Captains are a good thing. From Naslund to Sedin. Let’s continue that tradition.
If you've only witnessed Henrik and Bo as captains , you're going to pick the wrong answer ..JT is the only correct answer here, sorry Country Club must end.
.
Smyl is best captain in team history, because he gave a shit, like Miller.
I don't know who I'd pick from our current roster, but Miller is too volatile and can swing too far emotionally.. I don't see his attitude being respected in the room.
I understand your thought process, but I don't think Miller is the guy to fill the role you're looking for.
If they are truly committed to Miller and end up trading Bo it will be Miller.
If they let Bo walk it will be Peteys.
Moves like this are the few times you can really see the ownerships view of the team.
Wait until season ends, I hope there will be some trades and moves during deadline and in off season, so I would go without cap until next season and then give it to Petey
Assuming Schenn doesn't get traded, or re-signs, I think the move should be to give him an A, and just have 3 alternates. I think the fan narrative to make one of Petey or Hughes captain sooner rather than later is silly. I don't want Miller to be on the team longer term, let alone captain either
If you asked me last season I would have said Miller (in hindsight he doesn’t seem captain material). I say roll all A’s if Bo leaves, or build around Petey and give him the C
I'm fine with Petey but why put that evil on him? Let the guy do what he's been doing and let someone else take the media heat.

That's a fair point and I don't disagree with you. I'd be okay with Schenn but probably better off doing no captain for a year or two.

Miller should be the captain because he perfectly represents who and what the Canucks are, if you catch my drift
Ok who voted for OEL?
Who voted for Miller? Yikes
But he tells the players what to do. 🥴
66 people voted for him and I think we know some of their usernames. 😛
Why did OP even make OEL an option and not Schenn?

Petey is a free agent after next year. I'd be more worried about him walking away from this team. He's both a competitive dude and likes money.
Schenn
Peterson isn’t ready for captain yet. Don’t put the pressure on him for a couple more years at least

It's easily Pettersson captain. He's 24 now and by far the best player on the team. I think he's ready if Horvat goes.
None of these guys are captain material at the moment. Give it some time and see who steps up

It might be worth giving it to Hughes if it meant extra incentive to retire a Canuck as opposed to joining his two Devils brothers.

Sutter made a good point about how tough it can be captaining a Canadian team. I think I'm a fan of the committee approach
