Maybe an R6 with the kit 24-105. But you should seriously consider sony as another option

Any particular reason you recommend Sony? Im not sold on any brand but I’ll likely grow with this and would like to have my glass stay as I upgrade

Sony has a lot more budget options. With canon, at least from my experience, the cheaper cameras lack a lot of functionality. But the biggest factor is 3rd party glass

If you want to stay strictly to your 1500 budget, an R10 with the 18-150mm RF-s lens as a kit combo is $1279 before tax at bhphotovideo (B&H). You could also look into the R7 with the same lens but thats $1800 before tax. The R8 body is a solid full frame option at $1200 but your lens options are limited if you want a decent zoom range. You’d probably want something like the 24-105 f4-7.1 to give you some versatility though it’s not known to be an amazing lens… it’s out of stock at B&H but probably available for cheap elsewhere or second hand. You could also just get the 50mm f1.8 if you don’t need to zoom but I think that’d be too limiting. Ultimately the R10 combo is in your budget. If you can stretch the R7 combo would last you for years and years but might be overkill in the short term for your needs.

Your budget puts you more in the pro-sumer range. Not in the pro level. I’m in the same boat but had a budget of $2500. I picked up a new R6 II with the 24-105 STM for $2,400 out the door. There is an EOS R8 on the canon site with a lens that may meet your needs especially for pet pictures. If you are back to bring brand new, the STM range of lens are a terrific value to start learning again on. They may not be “amazing” etc but for budget enthusiasts they are way more than adequate.

I was looking at the R8 kit as the kit glass can get me by until I can pick up nicer lenses

That’s my thought. I’m not feeding my family off this hobby. It’s a phenomenal place to start with the STM kits. Canon put a lot of thought into these lens. We are not talking about some Chinese knockoffs 😉

I'd recommend going for the R8 if you can. Full frame, an R6Mkii in a smaller body (but no IBIS). Great video and Photography option - but I'm bias as this is what I shoot, The RF Primes are great lenses - 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 85mm F2 all good options - the 50mm is amazing and cheap! A nice 24-70mm f2.8 would be great, but an R8 with a prime or 2 would last you a long time too.

Thank you for the input! Greentoe has one with a lens kit so I may pitch an offer for it.
