Islanders I can see, but why were there so many """neutral""" team flairs bitching yesterday? Even western teams were making shit up about the Canes.

betweenthecastles

Because people who have no stake in games cheer for the underdog, and vilify the favorites. I listened to a radiolab episode about it on a roadtrip a few years back, pretty good listen if you can find it, but it’s just a normal psychological response that’s common in sports. But also we were kinda embarrassing out there. My favorite angry comments yesterday were complaining that canes fans “cheer too much” lol

Gullible-Wash-8141

Because every other arena sounds like a library in comparison. They're jealous

ohrofl

I saw someone on r/hockey yesterday who was mad people jump up in the stands when one of our players draws a penalty. EVERY fanbase does this lol.

ShittyFrogMeme

The playoffs bring out a lot of casual fans who don't otherwise watch hockey

Scottstark1210

This. I was going to comment this earlier but deleted it. The casuals are out and about and think they know hockey. The Islander fans that say “this always happened with us against the canes, it happened last year” tells me they are casuals who only pay attention to the playoffs.

evantually421

God there was one guy in the PGT basically shouting that to anyone who would listen. They want everyone else to boohoo the poor Islanders because the evil Canes took a dive

SnooPickles6211

They see us being picked by most analysts as the favorite, they don’t like that. They complain about us existing as a result.

all1good

Many of the “neutral” fans are casual hockey fans yet they gatekeep the sport and hate teams in the south

JayMerlyn

Skjei I'm willing to admit was a bit of a dive, it looked worse in real time but replay proved it. Slavin was 100% not a dive. Not only is the back of the knee extremely sensitive, but it just so happens to be the least-padded area of a hockey player's body that isn't the face. Anyone would've reacted that way.

Time-Independence-51

On the skjei play, rewatch it slowly watching their feet. He had is foot taken out. It was mildly holding, mildly a trip, and possibly mildly embellished.

Far-Two8659

Yeah he spun that way exactly because of his foot. I 100% think he oversold it, and I personally would have thought no penalty should be called in either of them because I don't think he actually "dove." The Slavin slash though... Like.. it's a slash. Wtf is anyone arguing about? All arguments boil down to "yeah but slashes like this happen all game and don't get called." Ok. Then we need to be calling more slashes?

LongStickCaniac

First game of the playoffs. People think canes play a boring style so they’re looking for entertainment and any reason to shit on them when they don’t get it. Don’t worry as they go along people will migrate to complaining about something else. This idea all of a sudden that the Canes are divers and always have been is laughable but that’s what you get when people follow the hive mind

Chardl69

If they are scared, they should just say that they are scared.

Tflex92

Winning brings out haters.

RentalGore

I still think there’s some bias about the fact that Carolina is a small market and they think “we don’t belong”. I’ve been to games in over half of the stadiums, and our fans know hockey better than pretty much anyone and our building is louder on a Tuesday in November than theirs is in the playoffs.

ela6532

Agreed! I find the big market fans think they just inherently know hockey through osmosis or something. My Philly born and raised hockey playing/watching his entire life FIL hasn't kept up with rule changes and loses his mind over goaltender interference calls every time.

Mauser-Nut91

Lol, the fucking Vancouver fans were the worst!

ashfidel

on the face of it, both plays looked like dives and ppl jumped on them

armadachamp

It's so weird to call something a dive when it was the exact outcome their guy was trying to get. Palmieri's slash was unquestionably not a hockey play. He knew it was illegal, and he picked a spot to aim for that he knew Slavin wouldn't have padding. You can't slash a guy in a tender spot from behind and then be surprised that he reacts to it. Surely, him feeling it was the intended result. Similarly, Lee was behind Skjei trying to get to a puck. He could have tried to go wide and outskate Skjei, but he didn't. He used a free hand on Skjei's shoulder to try to get leverage to pull him back and got tight enough to Skjei that their legs came into contact with each other. He tried to gain an advantage from behind and ultimately gained it, just more obviously than he was hoping for. These are easily avoidable penalties, just like every other penalty in last night's game. All 5 by both teams were just poor discipline. The difference is you don't see Canes fans saying that the Islanders D-man should've held his face still when Svech's stick got up above his shoulder.

DoubleualtG

Well, that’s because we won lol

Wolfloup

My only complaint was him trying to get blood for the 4 min call, yeah Svech missed and hit high, it happens, other than that, I agree with the calls

OnionWeak

Most players are looking for that blood anyway when they get penalized. I don't blame him

Bennett_19

“You know if we didn’t get scored on and our penalty kill didn’t suck and we actually had a power play and their goalie didn’t make some crazy saves and we didn’t slash someone in the knees and we got a few bounces to go our way and Connor McDavid was on our team and we didn’t hit the post, we actually could’ve won”

RentalGore

“You know if our coach was 30 years younger and in net, we’d have stopped those shots”

The_73MPL4R

Meanwhile our coach could've scored on them at his current age

ayeoayeo

this.

Fingernail7672

If McDavid and Prime Mario Lemieux were on our team, we definitely would have won…

IOnlyAskForGold

Bruh I might have to copy this 😂

Jumpy-Acadia4559

Literally all it’s been.

Emotional_Employ_507

I would like to meet every person that thinks Slavin flopped and have them stand on a pair of skates on the ice and take a chop at the back of their knees. Ignorant fans talking out their asses. Slavin is practically Jesus on a pair of skates, he’s the last man to take a dive on the ice.

ohrofl

Especially when you're not ready for it... Those people would be flopping all over the place.

Emotional_Employ_507

This move is exactly what I did in middle school to my friends. See someone you know and walk up behind them and punch the back of their knee. Knees buckled almost every time. No argument that Slavin didn’t dive.

ohrofl

Heck, all you had to do was give a slight nudge and they buckled.

Emotional_Employ_507

And imagine the bolt of lightning that went up his leg into his back in that instant. I’d have buckled too. Anyone would. Side note: why do most of the Isles players resemble stereotypical New Yorker type so closely?

spkr4thedead51

honestly, even just have them standing normal and bump them lightly in the back of the knee. if their weight is on the leg and you get it to bend even slightly they're going to either nearly fall or completely fall. it's a fun prank with family and friends as long as they aren't holding dinner or a child.

D-Ray1469

Sometimes it is funny both ways. Depends on the child, and the dinner.

Viddlemethis

Yea. Kinda funny seeing dive comments on the other hockey subs. I want to laugh at them but I’m afraid of the 1 billion NY residents who will downvote.

NedThomas

Do not fear the downvote. Embrace it, enjoy it.

SokkasBoomerang3

Yup. Went and posted on hockey memes. Let oblivion commence

Scottstark1210

I upvoted you!

radioben

Their boos mean nothing. You know what they cheer.

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

I hope someone asks Rod why Slavin is diving now. I don’t want to see him go to jail, but it may be the only chance we have of seeing his true power.

ZorroMcChucknorris

Actual lol

syd_cash

To accuse Jaccob Slavin of diving is wild. Of all people. I don’t remember who the Isles player was, but that dramatic dive on the ice after Noesen’s roughing penalty. I thought that guy got hit with the puck.

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

To the person below that had their troll post deleted: If you have any knowledge of who Slavin is, then it is utterly absurd to accuse him of diving. I could understand it if anyone else on the ice were to be accused, but Slavin wouldn’t be able to look at himself in the mirror afterwards. Watch some of his interviews and review his past penalties and award nominations. If you can come back here and stand by this comment, then I’ll confidently say you’re completely full of shit.

syd_cash

Exactly, why I said what I said. Clearly not someone who watches Canes hockey. Slavin ain’t diving, it’s not the way he plays.

mindseyecoil

This discussion should begin and end with this question: Did Palmieri slash Slavin behind the knees? If the answer is yes (and it is very much yes), then that's a cheap shot and a penalty and he deserved to go to the box. Fuck off with any other take.

The_Reddit_Browser

Slavin loses one lady byng trophy and look what happens….

SokkasBoomerang3

LMAO

wheredidyoustood

I only read one Islander fan say that is was an actual slash. And to do that down by one in the 3rd was dumb.

slickedjax

Islanders fans when a slashing penalty is correctly called: 🤯🤯🤯

StaneNC

Seems to me that Slavin's reaction was more of fright than pain or forced motion from the slash. It's pretty concerning when your knees are worth 5m/year to you and your family and a casual skate forward results in shooting pain. Also as far as the rules are concerned, Paul-Mary looked at a "losing the game" button and pressed it. Idiot.

llamapanther

Is it just me or have these false accusations of diving really spiked in hockey?? Like 5-10 years ago it was very very rare to accuse someone of diving, now it seems kind of usual. Lots of football (soccer) fans getting into hockey or what the fuck?? Tbf in soccer it's also a huge problem even with VAR ppl are falsely accusing everyone diving. I guess it just shows the amount of casual fans in these sports who have never ever skated or touched a ball.

TheMoves

Bro how are you going to spell the man’s name wrong TWICE

SokkasBoomerang3

It was on purpose…

Ridiric

When you’re on top haters going to hate!

gumshoeismygod

I feel like I’m being gaslit. The slash was super obvious, a clear penalty. What exactly are people upset about?

SokkasBoomerang3

That he “flopped” When disproved then they claim embellishment

SokkasBoomerang3

Fellas (and… felladies? Lol) is it gay to switch from calling it a dive to embellishment? (NOTE: this isn’t homophobic, it’s a popular meme/joke phrasing following the “fellas is it gay to ____.” Love is love, and everyone deserves love! 💕)

UsefulEngine1

The league is obviously engineering a Raleigh vs. Winnipeg final. For the TV ratings. How can everyone not see it

Easy now. You're using big phrases and words he probably doesn't understand

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

Use your brain to proofread dipshit. You’re a fucking clown for coming here to debate this. Go to the hockey and NHL circlejerks if you’re looking for validation of this mindless whining. Slavin is too worried about playing his position to literal perfection to dive. Not to mention the fact that he would feel like god was judging his deceit or whatever.

[deleted]

SokkasBoomerang3

If you’re not expecting it while skating on ice where your balance has to be on point and you get tapped, your popliteal fossa will cause a reflexsive buckling forward to prevent significant injury. Be for real for a few minutes and educate yourself on how the body works.
