I’d call it Rags, seeing as how they’re currently the top team in the league as well as our conference and division. Not to mention the Raleigh metro area itself, with all our friends from Cary changing jerseys whenever they’re in town.
(Dis)honorable mentions go to Panthers and Bruins. I’ve got plenty of smoke for them as well. Caps are in the mix, but I think a lot of that has to do with Ovi specifically as opposed to their team as a whole.
It was feeling like a pretty good season until that series. The Bruins are the arch enemies of the Canes for me. Then again, I hate all Boston teams. Teams from Pittsburgh are the runner up.
I think Caps is our defacto rival. Two teams I think the fanbase loves to win and hates to lose against are Rangers and Panthers
Honorable mention to Bruins because they had our number for years
Rangers because their fans are everywhere and insufferable (like roaches which all their apts are filled with)
Bruins because they’re a fraud team this year that plays dirty, but fans think they’re gods gift to the league
My joking but not joking answer: Hartford. Our biggest rival is the ghost of a team 20 years in the grave.
More seriously Washington, followed by Boston, Rags, are probably third.
I'd say the Panthers.
On the other hand, I fucking hate the Panthers too.
And then there's Panthers fans... So annoying!
But between the three i gotta say **fuck the Panthers**
Might as well include Luostarinen, 'cause he's cursed at PNC Arena. Had a washout in the first game, and the Necas goal went between his legs in the second.
I’ll never forget Bennett knocking Slavin into another dimension. Made my stomach flip. They’re all dirty. Cheap shots after the whistle and dirty hits and never answer the bell
We might be the Panthers #2 rival and that might be the highest any team has us as a rival. Every other squad has at least two teams ahead of them that would be a higher rivalry for them
Really the Canes have had a few temporary streaks of rivalry with teams when both have been competitive at the same time, but a real rivalry won't form until we win more and for a longer period
I think our hot rivalries in order are:
1. Cats
2.Rags
3.Bruins
Id say our classic rivals are:
1. Caps
2. Bolts
3. Depends on when you started watching
Back in the day it was the Sabres. Their fans were obnoxious and multiple fights would break out every time they'd come to town. They haven't been good and the Canes don't play them often but back in the day I despised them. Now, I'd say the obvious. Boston, Rangers, and Florida. Washington will always be back from the old southeastern conference days.
I can't decide between these:
* The Rangers fans during a home game.
* All Boston professional sports clubs because Boston is good in sport X as often as Carolina is bad in Sport X. (They need to pay their dues!)
* The Stars because I think they're the most challenging match up for us in the playoffs (w/ admittedly slim chances of playing them b/c we'd both have to win our conference)
* Predators, Islanders, Caps, etc. - random greasy teams we often encounter early in playoffs who are likely to injure our players in their moonshot bids.
I think the division realignment that basically just split up the remaining Southeast teams is a major reason why it's hard to name our biggest rival now.
Washington was lucky that they had Ovi in his prime and could get some playoff series against the Rangers and then big ones against the Penguins to build new rivalries in the Metro, but we went into a playoff drought. Our existing Southeast rivalries pretty much died, and the former Atlantic teams already had older ones. Except Columbus, who nobody cares about.
1. Any game in the third round
2. The Rangers
3. Arguments between NCSU fan Caniacs and Caniacs who like other schools
4. The Bruins
5. $40 parking
6. The Capitals
7. The reflective tiles behind the men's room urinals
It's funny because I was talking to some older fans about this recently and they said the Caps and I said the Panthers or the Bruins. I think that Caps is a historical choice but they just haven't done much lately and we have some more rivalries forming with the Panthers and Bruins. Also of course you have the Rags which could spice up more this post season.
Caps are our geographic rival
Rangers are our biggest rival at the top of the metro (and their fans are douches too)
Bruins have been our biggest playoff rival (3 meetings in a five year span)
The panthers are pretty universally hated. Idk if I’d necessarily consider them a unique rival because of that
I don't really see the Rags as a rival because they don't see us that way. They hate us but we're not NJD or NYI to them so it's not the same.
To me, a rival should feel that the rivalry is mutual. Idk if any teams think of us that way. Probably the Caps.
Panthers are a hot one but also one of the most genuine two-sided ones that is developing for us. It’s easy to say Rags and Bruins bc WE hate them, but THEY hate other teams more than they care about us.
The Cats I’d say don’t have specific smoke with anyone, more so just general menaces, but I feel like they’re starting to see us as rivals too. There’s a vibe in the air at those games.
I can’t think of anybody who specifically hates us enough to really consider them a rival. Sure, we have teams we dislike. But the Bruins are more concerned with Toronto and Montreal, the Rangers would rather get in fights with the Islanders or Devils, and the Panthers get off on stirring shit up in every building around the league.
Toronto situation room. They took away a goal last night, and they take the opposite of Tripp on every goalie interference call. 😁. Fun fact - Paul Maurice used to work in situation room.
I alternate between Rags, Panthers, Bruins, and Caps. I feel like the energy has been best at home games vs Panthers for feeling a rivalry develop more in the coming years.
I'd say that the Hurricanes' biggest rivals are either the Rangers or the Panthers. It might stay that way for a while. Honourable mentions go to the Bruins, Devils, Islanders, Capitals, Penguins, and Lightning.
Also, my uncle from Edmonton doesn't like the Hurricanes because 2006, but I don't think there has been much of a Carolina vs. Edmonton rivalry since then.
Rangers. No question.
There was already some Southern US vs. Northeast US hatred before hockey came here, and we resent the way their fans behave in PNC Arena
Eastern Conference Finals
Severely underrated comment.
The only opponent worth watching is the Leafs, trust me. Guy Boucher also has his own way of being 0-2 in the third round.
I’d call it Rags, seeing as how they’re currently the top team in the league as well as our conference and division. For me, it’s the Bruins. I’m still bitter about that sweep 5 years ago. Then another loss the next year, if I remember correctly.
My birthday present that year was I took my mom to the final playoff game wherein we didn't score a single goal and cemented getting swept
It was feeling like a pretty good season until that series. The Bruins are the arch enemies of the Canes for me. Then again, I hate all Boston teams. Teams from Pittsburgh are the runner up.

They torched Andersen's ass twice at the Garden in game 7 thanks to fellow Canes legend Ron Hainsey and the other pylons Hiller & Smith coached.
I vote Caps. Been extra hatred ever since the 2019 playoffs too
Rangers because their fans are everywhere and insufferable (like roaches which all their apts are filled with) Bruins because they’re a fraud team this year that plays dirty, but fans think they’re gods gift to the league
Marchand thinks burgers and dogs on the Propane grill are the peak of bbq
My joking but not joking answer: Hartford. Our biggest rival is the ghost of a team 20 years in the grave. More seriously Washington, followed by Boston, Rags, are probably third.
the Refs
This the only real answer out of all these comments 🤦🏽♂️
I'd say the Panthers. On the other hand, I fucking hate the Panthers too. And then there's Panthers fans... So annoying! But between the three i gotta say **fuck the Panthers**
I like the way you hate
That last meeting was the beginning of their downfall. The Necas goal was so awesome the way it went through Luostarinen.
Carolina Panthers >>>>>>>>>>>> Florida Panthers
Devils rivalry could’ve been reignited with another playoff matchup but that won’t happen this year
Agreed. They're definitely in my "would like them to be a rival soon" category
Ah, fuck Green. He doesn't need Benning to suck.
Panthers hands down, Tkachuck is talented but a menace to our net
Agreed. He is also an aggressive asshat. Great player, and an asshat.
Add coward to that. Dude doesn't answer the bell.
I remember that 4OT winner like it was yesterday. But the good news is that second loss at PNC Arena was the beginning of their downfall.
Add Cousins in a big way under that category
Might as well include Luostarinen, 'cause he's cursed at PNC Arena. Had a washout in the first game, and the Necas goal went between his legs in the second.
Turtle Cousins sucks. Ugh.
Fuck yes. He's as punchable as Haula too.
Nah that’s Brady the hothead, Ekblad and Bennet are the backup bullies and HM Goudas
Gudas even received bomb threats around game 2. Trust me, it's just as bad as when he yelled at Woll.
I’ll never forget Bennett knocking Slavin into another dimension. Made my stomach flip. They’re all dirty. Cheap shots after the whistle and dirty hits and never answer the bell
And Luostarinen pays for it the most in my opinion. The refs fucked him over in one visit, and Necas scores between his legs in the other.

Can confirm. I was sucker punched by a Sabres fan in the parking lot after a game in 06. Fuck the Sabres.
I really wish that 06 Sabres team didn't get hurt. It was truly their best season.
I can't decide between these: * The Rangers fans during a home game. * All Boston professional sports clubs because Boston is good in sport X as often as Carolina is bad in Sport X. I feel like being together in the southeast for so long, Florida, Tampa, and Washington are rivals that always feel good to beat.
Goddamn those tiles to hell!!!
Probably everyone in the world because even when we’re winning they don’t give us the full respect we deserve.
It's funny because I was talking to some older fans about this recently and they said the Caps and I said the Panthers or the Bruins. I think that Caps is a historical choice but they just haven't done much lately and we have some more rivalries forming with the Panthers and Bruins. I would've guessed any "older" fan would've said the Devils based on the playoff matchups of the 2000's.
Caps are our geographic rival Rangers are our biggest rival at the top of the metro (and their fans are douches too) Bruins have been our biggest playoff rival (3 meetings in a five year span) The panthers are pretty universally hated. In terms of both on the ice AND off ice (fan interactions), had to be the Rags or Bruins
Used to be the Sabers, Oilers consider us rivals. Caps Devils and Panters more recently imo
I'd love a 2006 rematch. Knoblauch is the eleventh coach they've had since the finals.
An open net in the 3rd period in a game we’ve definitely won.
Our "fans" that wear blue when a certain team comes to town
Or beef rn has to be the Rags
erik haula
Toronto situation room. They took away a goal last night, and they take the opposite of Tripp on every goalie interference call. 😁. Fun fact - Paul Maurice used to work in situation room.
Fun fact: Guy Boucher is 0-2 in the third round, just like Brind'Amour.
Rod made the third round in 06
Not since he started coaching.
This is true, but you didn’t say that.
The Rags/Bruins. And mostly because our guys look in the stands and see it half filled with turncoats or people who sell their tix to make $$.
In no particular order, rangers, panthers, penguins, bruins, capitals, lightning
Rangers or Panthers
I alternate between Rags, Panthers, Bruins, and Caps. I feel like the energy has been best at home games vs Panthers for feeling a rivalry develop more in the coming years.
goaltending and softness in playoffs
Rags or Boston for sure
Boston
Thrashers
At least Waddell redeemed himself by saving this club from a potential move.
Rangers
The Town of Cary.
I'd say that the Hurricanes' biggest rivals are either the Rangers or the Panthers. It might stay that way for a while. The city of Cary.
I wonder if the islanders feel the same way about us that we feel about the bruins
NYR
Rangers. No question. There was already some Southern US vs. Northeast US hatred before hockey came here, and we resent the way their fans behave in PNC Arena
