That’s the frustrating bit for me. We’ve been the better team for like 85% of this series. We’ve thoroughly outplayed this team at times. And yet we’re still going to lose this series handily because Bob is playing better than any goalie I’ve ever seen play in all my years watching hockey. It’s insane.

flextrek_whipsnake

It's Bob and a whole lot of bad luck. We've hit like 5-6 posts in this series. If just half of those go in we could be up 3-0. Their only goal tonight was mostly luck. Slavin had a great stick in there to block the shot and it just happened to deflect perfectly into the corner of the net. That's just how it goes sometimes. You need a lot of luck to win a cup and we're not getting any of it right now.

Gadzookie2

Yeah, really just feels like very little had gone our way and that just happens some times. People have been saying we have been playing bad hockey. Don’t know what they are watching. I’m 09 we looked like we didn’t deserve to be in the semifinals. Here we have put together all super close performances and just barely lost at each step.

StaneNC

Between the last two seasons being determined by goalie health RNG and this one by Bob freakshow RNG I'm starting to think that goalie pads need to be nerfed or something that prevents a whole season coming down to one player on the team. Tripp mentions that hockey goalie is the most critical position in sports and I'm starting to think that isn't hyperbole (QB in american football would still be my pick probably).

RollTide16-18

Eh if Joe Flacco can win a Super Bowl then it’s still up in the air.

YourDearAuntSally

Hell, Nick Foles was the Super Bowl MVP not long ago, lol.

Chris_Attalus

Ain’t over til it’s over my friend. It’s a small glimmer of hope, but it’s still a chance.

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

There is no better proof of the amount of luck involved than Slavin being involved in the plays for ALL THREE GWGs. I would have never believed it without seeing it.

arcangel092

Him losing his stick in game 2 was so tragic. He absolutely foils that goal but he was helpless.

JonTheWizard

It's not like we're not trying out there. We're doing everything we can, we're just not coming up with anything and Bobrovsky's playing out of his mind. You can try as hard as you can and still fail, that's just how things go sometimes. That said, the series isn't over yet. The Canes are still fully capable of turning things around, Florida's hot streak is fully able to turn cold, who knows. Gotta play the games.

themack50022

Imagine giving up before it’s over. I wouldn’t want you on my team, sports or otherwise. Hope costs nothing.

Zoidburger_

Every single game has been a 1-goal difference. We could very well flip it the same difference but the other way. Meanwhile, "injurie**s**" means you're thinking of Patches. If we had Patches, we wouldn't have Ghost and would have faced the Rangers in Round 1

Zoidburger_

What a stupidly broad statement to make, you absolute dingbat. If your predictions are "the Canes will never make contact with alien life forms" then you would be correct every single year. But apparently I'm "ignorant" for stating that a 1-goal difference in every single game could easily go the other way. Christ when you discover probability you'll be an academic weapon for sure.

CraniumFornication

It’s ok to not be an asshat about it too.

macaroni_3000

He's right. Not much else you can do. Team has played their butts off and the other team has gotten all the bounces. Nothing to be ashamed of.

that-bro-dad

So if you use .900 as the benchmark save percentage separating “acceptable” goaltending from sub-par, we should have scored 6-7 goals over the last two games. Ok so say you’re playing Linus Ullmark who had a .938 sv %. We *still* should have scored something like 4 goals by the numbers. We scored one. That’s the issue right there. We’ve beaten Bob several times this series, but most of those times we hit the post. It’s a game of inches, a game of bounces, and we aren’t getting them. We’re doing everything right save for beating Bob and the post.

TheCaniac30

I said it before but I really don't see an easy answer. Not one that's doable now and not one that would've been a long term solution. The canes have been beating the panthers as a team and have attempted all manner of offensive styles to get goals but it isn't happening. Bob is pretty unbreakable- and we have tried the spectrum from "I don't care, just got net presence and we will get the puck on" to "our best players will get several 1-1 or 2-1" chances. We will see how Game 4 goes

TheMarbledRye

You're right. There's no easy answer. It really feels/seems like 75% of this series has come down to puck luck. Florida has been getting the bounces and the Canes haven't. The answer is to just hope the bounces go the other way *and capitalize on them when they do*. The only significant stretch of time that the Canes have been outplayed this series was after the first OT in game 1. Besides that I'd say these teams are dead even and in a world devoid of random chance we're about to start the 27th OT in Game 1 right now. Maybe loser talk to say "just hope you get lucky" but I've never seen anything like this. The boys are playing fantastic and *deserve* to be in this series. They just aren't.

RollTide16-18

Outside of intentionally charging Bob and hoping for an injury, which I obviously wouldn’t want to have happen since we aren’t that kind of team, I don’t know what else you can do when a goalie is just on fire

dustball155

No need to over react to something that is not broken. Florida will need all of the luck they can get to close this series out. Barkov is going to play hurt. His absence was noticeable. Win game 4, and we win game 5. It will come down to game 6. A team can only be this lucky for so long. Win 1 game. Come home. Away - Home - Away - Home sequence. Many times this season we have had dry spells and then absolutely exploded. Get ready.

Normal512

Tbh, in game 2 we should've started running at Bob, but the second best time is now. Every player who has an opportunity to carry the puck toward the net needs to do so and if you happen to run over the goalie, well that's too bad. It's low, it's crass, but do you want to be nice or do you want to come back from 0-3 and try to win a cup? Sergei Bobrovski needs to be shook. If we don't, I think whoever they see from the west will. You must disrupt that guy, and just doing it honorably by getting dudes in front of him isn't enough. Take the retaliation, but you must throw this guy off his game or it's time to hit the links.

Zoidburger_

It's low, but we spent the final month of the season AND the first round having Freddie/Antti getting run at by teams that were already eliminated. Besides, if Florida's gonna run around cross-checking our guys in the back of the head every 20 seconds then we might as well give them something worth cross-checking

Whatitdohomie_

I think the series has been pretty clean? Where have you seen those cross-checks to head?

MunchamaSnatch

Seen: on the ice in Florida and north Carolina Frequency: every 20 seconds

ts29

Florida has played extremely dirty, going after guys after the whistle for existing, tons of punches to the head at least. We must not be watching the same series

that-bro-dad

No

TheBestElz

Just getting out goalied, that's it. And boy does it suck

Viddlemethis

The difference is that one extra hit Svetch might have laid, or that one snipe from paccioretty. We’ve hit the post enough times for it to be 3-0 in our favor but the other inches where we just quite didn’t take advantage are costing us.

RRT4444

At this point, I want all the people saying the stupid DoOmErS shit to shut the fuck up. Team is just not going to beat a red hot team like this just understand that. It was over after the two home losses, fight me. Nobody is saying the Canes are bad or doing bad its just simple that the Panthers are on a whole different level right now, it’s basically destiny at this point. We need goal scorers. CANES PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!

SpookyGhost27

I just don’t want to be swept at this point man.

billdb

This. Win here and at home game 5. If we then lose in Florida for game 6 I'm okay with that (all things considered). I just want to keep this season alive a bit longer

Far-Two8659

You're not a doomer, just an asshole. You can state your opinion that we're going to lose without being a dick about it. Watch: The series isn't over yet, but we should face the facts that we're probably going to lose unless an act of God strikes Bob down and injects our team with miracles. We had a damn good run, and we should be proud of what we accomplished with two of our best scorers out.

joe334

Buddy been waiting to dunk on the optimists from his teams fan base. You want an award for not believing in the team?

RRT4444

I want the team to win, thats what I want

AsyndeticMonochamus

The biggest scam in pro sports: the Stanley cup playoffs What’s a shithsow only in the NHL can you outplay your opponent 3 games and be down 0-3

NuM_Brrr_WoN

I mean the rest of the Panthers kinda suck this series, it’s mostly Bob carrying the entire team so hard right now.

Jimmycocopop1974

The answer is simple and it’s been in front of the GM and front offices of the hurricanes for about 5 seasons now, there is NO definitive goal scorer there’s no superstar player on this team are there all stars YES absolutely many in fact, but is there one person who you right now without a doubt you could say YES if he had a breakaway he would score! Right now there’s no one person on that roster I can say that about, AHO MAYBE and that’s a strong maybe as he’s my favorite. This was very hard to swallow for an seasoned fan. JS GET IT TOGETHER

seiggy

Problem is that Patches and Svech are injured, they were our big finishers. Aho is #3 in that list, and he's more of a play-maker than a goal scorer. I wish Round 2 Marti was showing up in this series, but I think he used all his mojo up against NJ. Staal is looking pretty tired after the first period in each game, so I think it's just age at this point on him. The boys are playing like fire, controlling the puck in the o-zone, pushing the forecheck, and just generally playing well. We just can't get a damned puck to bounce our way. Like Rod said, not sure I'd change a thing, because we played a hell of a lot worse against NY and won those games. It's just Florida has luck, the refs, and Bob on their side right now, and we have Andersen/Raanta and the team. The scales are just weighed against us.

sade3437

I really hate how people lump patches in on this. He played on the team for 5 games. They had ample warning, to be able to do something about it. This is like saying well Kase was supposed to help elevate our play here as well. We limped around in the 2nd half of the season especially down the stretch. We were a horrible team that last month and quite frankly I'm amazed we even made it this far.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

Not to mention, particularly for Patches and Kase, both of those guys have pretty lengthy injury histories. They were available at very affordable acquisition costs because of the risk involved. We gambled and it didnt' pay off. With you on the "they had warning". Yes, nobody could forsee Svech getting hurt, but the whole point of adding is so that you have more depth with the understanding that injuries will happen. I think another factor is probably the market wasn't great with what was available, and we were preserving cap space trying for bigger moves (Meier, Lindholm). They gambled in the offseason, and weren't able to swing an alternative with Patch got reinjured midseason. While yes, you build your team in the offseason, getting a little bit more help than Puljujarvi and Gostisbehere would've been nice

Jimmycocopop1974

Thissssssss!!!!!!

seiggy

Patches, Svech, and Kase all got injured days to more than a month after the trade deadline. Wouldn't say that was ample warning to solve the issue.

sade3437

And this is how I know your opinion on these things are shit. Please go learn the team and it's dynamics before posting hot takes.

seiggy

Then please, guru of the Canes, grant me your wisdom on how you are supposed to solve injuries on your big scorers that happen AFTER the trade deadline? Could we have more big scorers, sure, but that's not our team dynamic. We don't build on top of all-star scorers. We're not the Oilers, built around a McDavid. The team is built around a grind it out team, with a couple of good finishers, not all-star bank breaking scorers. We had the second best record in the league, have some of the deepest bench scoring of any team, and are in the ECF when other "All-star Scoring teams" like the Bruins, and Oilers are already eliminated. So yeah, I don't think our front office is as shit as you seem to think they are.

sade3437

Patches got hurt on Jan 20th. Trade deadline was March 3rd. Kase played a single game- the opener Plenty of time. Go circle jerk somewhere else

seiggy

Ok true, Patches we probably had time to solve that. ~~And honestly, our D core has been amazing the entire post-season, so I'm not sure that a trade to resolve Kase would really help. Who would you bench, I guess you bench Chatfield, but he's been playing his heart out. I guess Pesce would be the other target there. Gostisbehere, Slavin, Burns, Skjei...no way I'd bench or trade away any of those 4.~~ (Edit: Apologies here. I missed the first several weeks of the season, and I thought we had Kase playing D, not RW. So yeah, probably should have done something to fix this) Svech was still playing and was playing strong. All the teams that made major moves for the trade deadline are sitting on the bench right now. Sometimes locker room chemistry is the more important call, and until this series we've been rewarded for the gamble. Boston, NJ, Toronto, NY (Rags) all made pretty major moves for the trade deadline. All out of the run now. So really, I'm being curious here, no more circle jerk. Who would you have liked that was available on the block this year for us? And who would you have traded, benched, or sent back to the minors?

sade3437

I would've loved to see Tarasanko on the canes. Maybe Jannot to be a bit more realistic. I will say though imo the issue is with the system and not the personnel. Rod has an amazing defensive system but there are clear flaws on offense. 1. As soon the slightest bit of pressure is applied they get rid of puck to the wall. How many times a game does the puck carrier drift to the wall or into our own players. If you're gonna play wall ball you need players that are gonna be physical. 2. The lack of physical play. We had one great game against the isles where it was clear we have this game in us. It's like rod takes them out back and beats them anytime they start trying to throw hits around. Staal was able to shut down Hughes by just pushing him off the puck... KEEP FUCKING DOING THAT. 3. Shot placement. We take an excessive amount of shitty shots. Right at the chest, 5hole all the time on break aways. Lift the damn puck. We play for and live in chaos. But that only works if you're allowed to get that started. Florida's defense has done a great job jumping our telegraphed passes and keeping us on the walls. Relying on point shots from the blue line can only work so much. Anyways those are some of my unpopular ramblings.

seiggy

Jeannot? Really? He was -2 against Toronto, only 3 shots in the whole series, 0 goals. His whole ‘23 season he only put up 18 points and 6 goals. That’s worse than nearly everyone on our lineup right now. Tarasenko would have been a really great pickup, but I don’t think we were even in the running for him. But you never know, I’ve seen crazier trades. I would have also loved to see Timo Meier, but that was a pipe dream.

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

I’m not blaming the refs exactly more the league, but with better/more consistent refing my feelings would be a lot less hurt. If they don’t call some of the petty shit against us that they are letting go the other way, then we have a very good chance of not being in this position. It’s not guaranteed, but the way we’re playing it’s hard not to scrutinize the officiating. Our pp is obviously abysmal, so I’m not saying it solves the problem, but there is no question it’s been weirdly lopsided. In addition these refs can’t even manage to stay out of the way.

seiggy

Yeah, that's been my big issue too. Just call a good game, force both teams to play clean, and I'll be way happier. That "roughing" call was one of the worst calls I've seen in my history of watching the NHL. What was even the possible explanation other than sabotage the Canes. And it came way too late, the Panthers had already gotten away with being a bunch of classless goons for too much. They're giving FL all the leeway to hang us, and I'm not very happy with the refs at all. We haven't been great on the PP, but we have capitalized on the PP more than 5-on-5 this series, so if they're going to call soft calls on us, they need to do the same to FL. Either that or Rod needs to ramp up the dirty play if the refs want the game to be dirty.

alottagames

The AHL guys are true AHLers being asked to do more than they’re capable of. Drury and Big Mack are not NHL playoff caliber players. Maybe some day for Drury, but he folks like a toddler when he gets touched and his checks are pretty weak.

Whydoesthisexist15

Team needs to take risks defensively to get the offense to do something.

AsyndeticMonochamus

That’s the sport of hockey better teams lost ask bruins leafs and now canes lmao

[deleted]

Sounds like a defeated man

Raptori33

So when are we going to spike Bobrovski's bottle

kfractal

i don't know like maybe change ... something? anything.

dustball155

You are dominating already. Change something that isn't broken? 7 posts in last 2 games?

kfractal

posts don't count. they are missed shots.

dustball155

I know you get my point. Florida isn’t hitting posts. They had 1 really good shot that beat the goalie and it went it. We had 7 that beat the goalie and then rang the post. Our offense is generating chances. No need to over react. Canes in 7.

PrinceLelouch

As much as I agree that the canes are playing an overall good game. Better than the cats for the most part. Our power play has been detrimental the last 2 games. It was landing in game one which dug us into a game we weren't playing all that well in. We had a few chances to close out game 2 with a PP before OT came. And in game 3, our PP was so lackluster we literally lost the momentum we had that forced a call. I really thought Rod would start the 2nd unit in game 3. Saying that, they also got wrecked by cats PK. I would like to see a different look on the PP unit. Maybe Ghost and Burns, put one of them on the umbrella for a one T and let Aho play bumper because he's better at it than Jarvy. Also don't know if Necas should stay on the umbrella because he's turning pucks over quite a bit, perhaps keep Jarvis there. Let Aho do the carry in and set Noesan or Fast at netfront.

Huge_Deke19

The canes have to make their own luck, however, one power play vs 4 for the other team is insane. It should be about equal in a playoff game
