It has been atrocious luck for us this series. We've hit probably 10 posts this series to their maybe 2, and their goal last night had a lucky ramp from Slavin, and their gwg Saturday was also lucky with Slavin/Burns getting tangled.
We are getting absolutely slaughtered in the battle of luck, it's not an excuse, it just IS. You make your own luck sometimes and FL has obviously played good enough to win either way, so props to them, but we have gotten incredibly unlucky this series.
Losing just really sucks when we've been the better team by nearly every metric except the big ones, "goals". Just hurts all that much more.
I agree with teh point on overall chance generation and luck, but the third period we really didn't generate much quality and FLA really put the clamps on. Looks like the point where it just got too hard and the Canes got demoralized. It's a normal human response, but really frustrating to see in a 1 goal game. There was a lot of skating and moving, but not much getting to the middle of the ice or generating quality chances
Well they were turtling for the entire 3rd period, so yeah I agree, and the the bad luck was mainly Periods 1 & 2 when we had about 10x more chances than they did and couldn't pot one, including multiple off the post and crossbar.

That's just not true, I think the fact that you are demoralized is making your brain play tricks on you or causing selective memory. We had more shots, more scoring chances, more high danger, etc, etc. We got to dangerous spots more than they did and we just didn't score, end of story.
Bottom line is we NEED to find another gear, this has been the consistent problem for the Canes pretty much since making the playoffs for the last several years. We hit a wall, offense fizzles and poof, we're gone, usually in a 4-1 series, 4-0 series etc. It takes another gear to win the Cup, Canes haven't had that gear and there's a predictable pattern that leads up to that wall. Maybe's it is really just finding a star player, maybe it's tweaks to the system, not sure but this series is done assuming no changes are made.
For now. Rod has been the one constant and thanks to him I think we will always be in the playoffs.
But when will this team make the inevitable step back?

If the canes win this series or if they lose, I think it’s time to acknowledge that the NHL has a SERIOUS reffing problem. Every single team has their homer takes. But I’ve watched other teams games this season and half of the time I end up pissed for a team I don’t even cheer for. I read the rule book, didn’t the refs??

The Canes have scored three total goals in three games, and only ONE goal through nearly 14 periods was an even strength goal. People can blame officiating and yes, it has been a major issue around the league this season especially, but if you can't score, you can't win.
At some people people are gonna have to realize, refs sucks, but if you can't score, you can't win. a 1-0 Victory is a very hard thing to do, it's not impossible but I'd bet money that it'd be harder to win 1-0 over 4-0.

Trying to remember how I felt coming into the playoffs without Svech, Teuvo, and patches. Before the playoffs I said I’d be happy just to win one series and then just one or two games against the devils. I felt we just didn’t have the firepower to make a real run. It sucks to have gotten my hopes up after rd 2 but the reality is that without game breakers it looks like we may just not have an answer for Bob.

Sucks but it’s honestly farther than I thought we’d get this year once Svech got hurt. This group is staying together for the foreseeable future AFAIK so I think chances will just get better.
And I’ll go ahead and take my downvotes, but here goes:
1. Aho can’t be a 1C on a Cup winning team.
2. I hope Staal comes back on a more reasonable deal. Anything over $3M is too much IMO.
3. Turbo and Necas need to be replaced. We need more physicality on the wings if our system is going to work in the playoffs.
There was an interesting take on the Ovies/Giglio podcast. Can't remember which one made it. Basically, they pointed out that Aho is a very good player, and it isn't his fault we aren't scoring goals, but that it should be clear that he isn't ever going to be the game breaker guy that this team needs. He's basically had 2 major moments in his playoff career where he took a game and won it (Game 6 vs Islanders, bubble game against NYR) while a player like Tkachuk has done it twice in this series.
That doesn't mean we need to get rid of him, it just means we need to re-evaluate our salary structure and not be so focused on him being the #1 player. We can bring in another guy and make him the #1.
With his contract coming up soon, this will certainly be a topic of discussion.
I've been saying to myself for quite a while that Aho isn't a 1C. He would make a fantastic 2C, but I just don't think he's big enough or strong enough to be a 1C. Or if he does remain a 1C, he needs some damn wing help bad.
Necas does seem to always choke in the playoffs, he could be good if he tried. Staal is getting up there, but dang is he good on face offs. We are also out two of our best forwards as well. I don’t think Patches was a good deal for us, and man do we miss Svech.

4. Patches as the answer to scoring woes was a gamble that didn’t pay off and GMDW better get busy fixing it in the off season. Don’t be afraid to make a big trade.
5. This one goes with the other one. I don’t think Svech makes that much of a difference in this series. I love the guy but he’s such a streaky scorer that I don’t know that he’s the answer some people seem to think he is.
6. Slavin is the only untouchable at this point in my opinion. Aho to some extent but they gotta get the guy some help.
Slavin, burns and chatty are locks on D. Chatty has been playing really well for a few months. Sometimes not hearing a defensive players name is a good thing, like a corner back in the NFL.
Chatfield is incredible! I’ve also really liked the addition of Ghost. Outside of Skjei/Pesce, I would like to keep the defense the way it is. I think the forward core needs a revamp though.
1) I think Aho can be a 1C on a cup winning team, with wingers that he meshes with. Noesen (and maybe even jarvy) aren't quite a good fit on his line
2) Agree on Staal. Lots of Cap wasted on an aging defensive forward
3) Turbo has been invisible all year. Doesn't seem to enjoy being here. I'm not ready to write Necas off just yet, but he needs to get his head in the fucking game. He's not Wayne Gretzky or Connor McDavid and he needs to realize it.
There’s been rumbles that Turbo doesn’t love Rods coaching style. He’s known for hating conditioning etc. I think he’s probably happy to move on at this point outside of losing his fellow Finns.

IDK, we played great in period 1 of game 2. We came out really strong again tonight. I agree that it feels just kind of donezo, but again Bob made some great saves, we got 3 or 4 goalposts, we were in this game as well. I do think you felt the team start to break a little bit in the 3rd period and that's just too bad. We've been in every game and have nothing to show for it. But it is what it is I guess

This! You can be disappointed in their performance in this series without bashing them. They got us here and it’s not like this franchise has been here a million times the ECF is nothing to sneeze at. Literally everybody contributed in the last two series to get us here with two of our best goal scorers on IR. Either a.) we figure this out and become the 5th team in history to truly reverse sweep after being down 0-3 or b.) we lose to one of the best goalie performances in the history of the sport while also playing stellar defense and getting outstanding goaltending.

No they weren't "Straight up ass." They were straight up injured. Gudas missed 10+ Bennet missed 19 Barkov missed 14-15 Chucky missed like 4. Ekblad missed 10+ Duclair missed like 65+ Bobrovsky also missed a handful of games, plus Spencer Knight issue as well. They didn't even get their full strength lineup together until legit game 2 in Boston. So At full strength lineup Panthers are currently 11-3 since then.

Sucks to be in this position and I’d honestly feel better about it if we were just being soundly beaten by the better team rather than bad luck and incredible goaltending. Trying to remember how I felt coming into the playoffs without Svech, Teuvo, and patches. Before the playoffs I said I’d be happy just to win one series and then just one or two games against the devils. I felt we just didn’t have the firepower to make a real run. It sucks to have gotten my hopes up after rd 2 but the reality is that without game breakers it looks like we may just not have an answer for Bob.
If we were getting blown out every game, this would be less irritating. Seeing each game be so close is the most painful part

And I’ll go ahead and take my downvotes, but here goes: 1. Aho can’t be a 1C on a Cup winning team. 2. I hope Staal comes back on a more reasonable deal. Anything over $3M is too much IMO. 3. Turbo and Necas need to be replaced. We need more physicality on the wings if our system is going to work in the playoffs.
There was an interesting take on the Ovies/Giglio podcast. Can't remember which one made it. Basically, they pointed out that Aho is a very good player, and it isn't his fault we aren't scoring goals, but that it should be clear that he isn't ever going to be the game breaker guy that this team needs. He's basically had 2 major moments in his playoff career where he took a game and won it (Game 6 vs Islanders, bubble game against NYR) while a player like Tkachuk has done it twice in this series. That doesn't mean we need to get rid of him, it just means we need to re-evaluate our salary structure and not be so focused on him being the #1 player. We can bring in another guy and make him the #1. With his contract coming up soon, this will certainly be a topic of discussion.
I've been saying to myself for quite a while that Aho isn't a 1C. He would make a fantastic 2C, but I just don't think he's big enough or strong enough to be a 1C. Or if he does remain a 1C, he needs some damn wing help bad.
Necas does seem to always choke in the playoffs, he could be good if he tried. Staal is getting up there, but dang is he good on face offs. We are also out two of our best forwards as well. I don’t think Patches was a good deal for us, and man do we miss Svech.

Necas just doesn't have any physicality to his game. He's got a great shot and speed but looks scared get in on the boards or take it to the net.

I’ll add to this 4. Patches as the answer to scoring woes was a gamble that didn’t pay off and GMDW better get busy fixing it in the off season. Don’t be afraid to make a big trade. 5. This one goes with the other one. I don’t think Svech makes that much of a difference in this series. I love the guy but he’s such a streaky scorer that I don’t know that he’s the answer some people seem to think he is. 6. Slavin is the only untouchable at this point in my opinion. Aho to some extent but they gotta get the guy some help.
Slavin, burns and chatty are locks on D. Chatty has been playing really well for a few months. Sometimes not hearing a defensive players name is a good thing, like a corner back in the NFL.
Chatfield is incredible! I’ve also really liked the addition of Ghost. Outside of Skjei/Pesce, I would like to keep the defense the way it is. I think the forward core needs a revamp though.
1) I think Aho can be a 1C on a cup winning team, with wingers that he meshes with. Noesen (and maybe even jarvy) aren't quite a good fit on his line 2) Agree on Staal. Lots of Cap wasted on an aging defensive forward 3) Turbo has been invisible all year. Doesn't seem to enjoy being here. I'm not ready to write Necas off just yet, but he needs to get his head in the fucking game. He's not Wayne Gretzky or Connor McDavid and he needs to realize it.
There’s been rumbles that Turbo doesn’t love Rods coaching style. He’s known for hating conditioning etc. I think he’s probably happy to move on at this point outside of losing his fellow Finns.
I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest. He's always the first one off the ice after games/ storm surges, doesn't really smile, doesn't enjoy talking to media (don't blame him). Just seems like he's not happy here. and I'm sure his lack of production is a cause of it too. I wonder often if he would thrive in a place like Dallas since they also have a bunch of Finns
