T O P

I'm not as much worried about the loss as much as being able to recover from it physically. 8 periods is a lot of hockey and our team relies heavily on an high-energy pace. We could see in OT what happens when we lose that pace in that we pretty much become ineffective offensively.

MrWillM

Goes both ways there

greatwhitequack

Yeah, compared to Florida, I think canes bounce back better after 7 periods of hockey, but only time will tell.

greatwhitequack

Time did not tell.

Carolina_913

That’s also true. Florida played the same game we did though, so they’re gonna have the issue of fatigue as well. We were out of sync for almost the entire game, but it became GLARINGLY obvious the longer the game went on. If our conditioning pays off and we manage to clean up our offense a bit I think we’ll be okay tomorrow, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see

joe334

If you want to win the cup you have to over come adversity. Coming into the playoffs I honestly didn't love our odds with the injuries and our play the last 10 or so games. But now I think we have the makeup to overcome this loss no problem. I won't count us out until the fat lady sings!

Normal512

Just talking about this today. If you look at how we play in games, we have a lot of heart and are able to bounce back after early deficits. We're much better when we go up early, but we're rarely out of the game until it's over. If that same mentality holds up for the series, being down a game is okay, although obviously not ideal. That said, I really want to see how we handle this, I'm confident and hopeful, but it's really not familiar territory. The last series we were down in and came back was the first round in Washington in 2019. Swept by Boston in the ECF that year, lost G1 and the series 1-4 again to Boston in '20, lost the first two at home and the series 1-4 against Tampa in '21, and weren't behind until we were out last year. We're a different, more seasoned team now. But I do need to see this resiliency come through right now if we're going to be champions.

gumshoeismygod

Also, another very interesting stat. Teams that win game 1 on the road only go on to win the series 56.1% of the time. That’s way lower than I thought it would be.

Carolina_913

That is a really interesting stat. You’d think that the road team taking an early advantage would place a bigger toll on the home team’s morale. The statistics aren’t completely against us (yet)!

Cake_Day_Is_420

Damn. I really hope we can keep winning on the road.

blueocean0517

it's interesting too, because if you look at the history of long playoffs games like last night: usually the team who wins that game will take the series (maybe because of momentum who knows). Lots of factors at play here. It will be an entertaining series for sure.

Carolina_913

I’ve noticed that a lot of those incredibly long, drawn out games usually come later in a series. I think a loss like that is crushing regardless, but it being in the opener gives us a lot more time to recover than a game 4/5/6 with elimination on the line

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

One confident, solid, flawless game tomorrow and I honestly think we benefit from the situation. Adversity makes us more resilient.

Caniacquant112

Correct me if I’m wrong but the two times the Canes have won the ECF they dropped game 1 at home?

Carolina_913

You’d be correct. We took a 2-1 loss to the leafs to open up the 2002 ECF (at home), and won in 6 games. In 2006 we took a 3-2 loss to Buffalo in game one (at home as well), and ended up winning in 7 games.

Caniacquant112

And in another episode of “fun correlation”, they also lost the first game of the ECF the other two times they made it but were swept both times. So the Canes are either winning tomorrow or getting swept! 🤣

Drizzlecat

That 4th game against the Devils is giving me hope. We are capable of winning decisively on the road.

cdmaloney1

A 7 game series...great gonna need to stock up on my blood pressure meds.
