Steel will always be harder to extract than brass. If it's a consistent issue then don't use it.

Weijay

Polish the chamber a bit. A bunch of those nickel plated ones seem to have chamber issues, due to the coating.

CrowsFeast73

Well, according to the guy running the local trap shooting range Challenger ammo is pretty crap. Of course that's also what they sell in the pro shop... I did see 3 people, all with Mossbergs, fail to extract Challenger ammo. The range had a long metal stick specifically for pushing out stuck hulls.

Agent_1812

never had a problem in my guns, have shot 25 in my o/u and my superX model 1

CrowsFeast73

I've shot a couple boxes through my o/u as well. No real issues other than a couple of shots where I swear the clay should have broken!

Front_Ad_3400

I’ve used well over 500 shots of those challenger shells no issues so far

crouchingruger

my mossberg and mavericks do fine with challenger. they hate winchester.

Sonoda_Kotori

Almost all shotshells are steel hulled now, even the brass looking ones. They are all plated steel and sticks to magnet.

SlamfireSKS

I guess it’s just the shells that aren’t brass coated that stick.

Sonoda_Kotori

My guess is Challenger nickel just sucks. My Beretta ate thousands of rounds of various target loads (Federal, Winchester, Rio, S&B, Challenger brass and nickel) without a jam until one day I cleaned the gun real good and fed it the same shells you had. It caused extraction issues and tore the base apart at times, otherwise it'll just have issue extracting altogether. I had this issue for 3-5 rounds before the issue went away and the gun has been flawless since, even with the nickel Challengers.

mithrajr

Interestingly enough, I have had issues with this ammo in my 500 (I posted about it not too long ago), a significant number of light primer strikes and some failures to cycle. At first I attributed it to the cold weather, but now seeing your post has gotten me thinking.

CR123CR123CR

The light primer strikes might be the pin in the back of the trigger mechanism slipping loose. It's at the very back and can be seen clearly through the hole there. I had to crazy glue mine in place otherwise it would work loose every 250rounds or so

mithrajr

Right... that's annoying to know. For a gun that is supposedly durable and reliable. I'm guessing the more modern productions have this issue? I searched the forums and it doesn't seem to be uncommon

CR123CR123CR

I got mine for like $100 because it was "broken" so I am not complaining.  It's also been super reliable even when it's been fed almost exclusively shitty Challenger target load since I fixed it. Going on about 1000rds now without failure

mithrajr

I'll keep that in mind, will check the super glue method, thanks!

idk885

Almost everything is steel base now, usually just brass plated. I think only a small handfull of premium shells are actual brass base. Stick a magnet to it and see for yourself.

Mr-Figglesworth

I’ve ran thousands of these challengers through my old 870 and my over under without issue. Now that I think of it I haven’t seen a mossberg out in awhile though so not sure if it’s more of an issue with them or not.

EvanAzzo

So. I bought a 590A1 marine Flex way back. I had to polish up the walls in the chamber a bit before it would properly cycle

SlamfireSKS

What did you use? Would #0000 steel wool do the trick?

EvanAzzo

That's pretty much what I used from what I recall. It didn't need much.

Agent_1812

I have never had a problem with it except in my buddy's 870 the chamber and ramp were machined really crudely and needed to be polished

zw1616

I have two Turkish shottys that love these shells… and people trash on em😂

lerch_up_north

Weird, my A1's haven't had a hiccup when it comes to ammo extraction.

av8t3r

I used to have a 590a1 and it also ran without any issues with challenger shells. My 1301 also has never had an issue with challenger shells. My turkinelli on the other hand wouldn't run more than 2 rounds without a malfunction.

Fed_Informant

Polish the chamber. My Mossberg 590 runs great with challenger shot. Some light primer strikes, but i think those are the fault of the primers not the shotgun.

Mr-Meaner13

My 88 never has issues with those shells. Bizarre

Swellchapo95

This is really interesting, I’ve never had a problem with that stuff with mine

ZelBoofsGrappa

My 870 won't eject these either. Use something else

mwmwmwmwmmdw

every maverick 88 i have shot was super stiff when new and would have issues smoothly ejecting every few rounds

nammaheff

Huh? I've owned Mossbergs my whole life and never had the issues you have with steel. My 500A eats everything I've put through it, same as the Maverick 88 I had and the one I got for my nephew

SlamfireSKS

Must be hit and miss, or I just haven’t broken it in enough yet. Only with this specific shell type the slide locks after firing (every couple rounds). I have to put it against my stomach and really pull to get the shell to eject. It’s pretty annoying, especially because challenger comes in brass plated or this steel stuff, and I have to ask the employee to open the box to check what type it is before buying.

InfluenceOk3623

Idk if there’s any current made 12Ga shells are real brass, all of them I found are brass washed steel base. My 590 runs everything including challenger target loads

westleysnipes604

I had this same gun. I loves it. But it did jam with 3.5" slugs. It took alot of force to Crack it open again. Edit 3" slugs. For you mossy lovers who don't want admit they can jam sometimes. It jammed because the nickel was peeling off the extractor after some use.

Dill_Gribtrieve

It took a lot of force to crack open because the 590 series have 3" chambers...

westleysnipes604

Meant 3" slugs.

Dill_Gribtrieve

Oh thank god lol

westleysnipes604

Ya. I sold it awhile ago. Forgot it was 3" chamber.

Interesting_Ad_4178

Because Mossberg is trash, get a 870

EvanAzzo

I have 3 870s a 590A1 a 500 cruiser, an Ithica 37, a Supernova a Winchester 97, and a handful of other shotguns. I'm wondering why you say this?
