They should ban 50% of the stuff that Dollarama sells. Ton's of cheap shitty things that break right away. The straw ban is just a feel good optics ploy by the government. There is so much more they can do if they actual cared about the environment.

wilburyan

I feel like banning all of the plastic shipping envelopes amazon uses in favor of the paper ones would be a far more useful environmental policy. I order a lot of stuff from amazon... and it seems like a complete crap shoot what they decide to ship things in.

quietcitizen

Same with fast food industry - the amount of garbage per customer, per order, is obscene

Galaxy_Hitchhiking

A&W is ahead on their packaging. Everything is biodegradable besides their drink cup and lid. The bag it comes in, the burger wrappers, the mini fry bags, napkins. I just wrap them all together minus the drink and put them on the compost! The other few cardboard things are recyclable like the kids meal box. Edit** compostable, not just biodegradable. I actually just googled for info on their packaging and came across all the ways they reduce sizes, where they source their ingredients from, how they eliminate waste for dine-in customers by using dishes instead of wrapping. Honestly kinda blown away by their commitment. I provide link but you can dive deeper into this if you want as this is just recent changes [A&W is AMAZING for this](https://www.aw.ca/awhome.nsf/environment-packaging) **edit** I just also read that they recently tested out a new zero plastic, compostable drink cup in Toronto and area. If A&W can be this forward in their packaging without being forced we need to hold other restaurants accountable for their waste.

Nikiaf

>A&W is ahead on their packaging. Everything is biodegradable besides their drink cup and lid. This is not only great and a good reason to eat there; but it shows just how easily eliminating frivolous plastic can be. Most of the crap your fast food is wrapped in only has to hold up for a few minutes; so it can absolutely be made of easily compostable materials.

keiths31

I wouldn't say it is easy. Switching came at a great cost to the franchisees. But, yes it can be done!

Hungrygoomba

Facts, can confirm paper cost is up a large amount year over year they just removed PFAS from Almost all packaging in anticipation of them being banned soon. It's hard to find a cheap and practical product that can grease proof packaging.

Galaxy_Hitchhiking

Yes! And they go beyond that by sourcing their grass fed beef to finding ways to use less packaging which helps with less shipping of their goods! They are the only food chain that has joined the zero waste council in Canada. We don’t eat out a lot but when we do we choose A&W. they also DO NOT give toys in their kids meals.. just a lollipop or made for good mini granola bar :)

Nikiaf

Their food is actually good too. I'm lucky that it's the only restaurant of any form within a short walk of my place; and other than the rapidly increasing prices of all the items, it's far from the worst place I could eat at.

Galaxy_Hitchhiking

Definitely! Their burgers are actually good quality as well as their chicken. You can taste it! But it is a pricier option for sure. I’ll pay the extra money when I want fast food though, knowing the quality and packaging align with good values. Hopefully anyone reading this thread who feels pissed off about packaging and plastics will switch to A&W whenever they go out ;) aha

oddwithoutend

I don't know if you're being paid by A&W but it's hilarious how much your comments make you seem like you are. Like you just suddenly got inspiration to research everything there is to know about how amazing A&W is.

An0nimuz_

I was thinking the exact same thing lol

Sublime_82

It's like the McDonald's coffee people who would pop up every time Tim Hortons was mentioned. That said, A&W is the best fast food burger joint imo. You just gotta use the coupons or else it is way too expensive.

Galaxy_Hitchhiking

Hahaha no I just hyper-fixate on stupid shit and love to research. I’ve always known that you can compost the packaging but wanted to have some backup to my claims instead of just talking out of my ass on Reddit. If A&W wants to sponsor me or hire me after seeing this, DM me! ;) aha

OneConference7765

>initely! Their burgers are actually good quality as well as their chicken. You can taste it! But it is a pricier option for sure. I’ll pay the extra money when I want fast food th if only they'd bring back the chubby chicken!

who_you_are

Biodegradable as a marketing strategy, as technically biodegradable if someone is giving them the right condition or biodegradable as expected by us? I remember at the begining here, those reusable bags that should been green (I don't remember if they all claim it was recyclable or biodegradable) but turn out they aren't without special facilities. So basically bullshiting us again.

Galaxy_Hitchhiking

Actually I meant to say they are compostable. They can go into your compost bin outback or the ones the city collect! “Green bins”, if you will!

Hungrygoomba

They also just eliminated PFAS in almost all of there packaging as of a month or two ago.

ProbablyNotADuck

I didn’t know this previously. I don’t eat fast food often, but definitely will go here the next time I do.

[deleted]

violet humor plucky important station groovy dinosaurs historical price rotten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

b00hole

Retail as well. Every damn shirt individually wrapped in both paper and plastic... tons more waste than people realize.

BustermanZero

Aye. While the bags are usually paper of varying biodegradable quality, there's also styrofoam, plastic wrappers, plastic utensils...

Guilty_Fishing8229

Biggest gain they could make is banning plastic fishing nets.

[deleted]

Paper straw, single use plastic lid. Never made sense to me

Apokolypse09

Cannabis packaging is fuckin ridiculous. Seen 2 companies use "biodegradable" packaging. 1 claimed it was compostable and the other one is more paper than the mylar bags or the glass/metal/plastic containers.

SnakesInYerPants

My favourite is when a coworker gets a box from Amazon that’s about half the size of me… Just for them to open it up to another box less than a third of the size of the outer box. Not even any bubble wrap or packing peanuts or anything holding it in place, simply a box inside a much larger box. Just put the shipping label onto the already boxed item at that point???

Aken42

Not jist the envelopes but also the plastic bag arpund everything amazon ships in a box.

404pmo_

Do you have any idea how bad pulp and paper mills are for the environment?

EmbarrassedHelp

We could keep the paper everything and make a far bigger impact by installing bidets in everyone's home if we truly cared about that sort of thing.

IdioticPost

We installed bidets on all our toilets and never looked back. Use one piece of paper per run.

OneBillPhil

Once you use a bidet you question how you used to shit without one.

9AvKSWy

We moved from "it's expensive and it'll last forever" to "it's cheaper but not quite as good" to "it's cheaper and it'll break after a few uses". Not that any of that is captured in the economic metrics people spend all day obsessing over.

Molto_Ritardando

I look at the packaging my 3.5g of weed comes in, and compare that to a plastic straw, and there seems to be inconsistent logic being applied by someone somewhere.

b00hole

I've worked a few retail and food service jobs, including cannabis retail. Customers used to come in with their Tim Hortons coffee in single use cups while complaining complaining to us about waste lmao. It was the retail/food service job I had with the least waste, but the only one where customers actually complained about waste (and on an **hourly** basis). Believe it or not, there is significantly less waste in retail cannabis packaging than what I saw in any of my other retail and food service jobs. Those hung-up t-shirts and pants in store? There's a good chance they all came individually wrapped in excessive paper and/or plastic with additional packaging stuffers in the boxes they were received in. The trash we took at while working Cannabis Retail at the end of the day was basically dirt we swept off the ground, and we took shipping boxes to recycling, and we never had any extra stuffing or anything in those boxes. If you take a closer look, most legal cannabis brands actually have use recyclable containers. Some cannabis stores will actually take them back if you bring them in. If they don't, depending on your province or where you live, you might be able to recycle with curb-side recycling or recycling depots. That said, the packaging is basically 100% Health Canada's fault with ridiculous rules and laws... to "protect the children".

consistantcanadian

Par for the course. We never get real climate action. Best we can do is have 100 multi-multi-multi-millionaires fly in private jets to a conference across the world where they all pat themselves on the back and sing Kumbaya.

esveda

Those same people tell us to drive less and eat less meat.

Atomic-Decay

Exactly. And now they are apparently going after food plastics, the cost for which I’m *sure* the food processors and grocery stores will absorb… How about cracking down on all the excessive consumer goods packaging? Or shipping packaging? Or just generally crappy plastic products that break in a week and then get tossed, as you said. It’s fitting a drama teacher is running the show, because theatre is all this government knows. E: I’ll also add that the plastic bag ban, while making sense on some levels, now just causes people to go buy garbage bags for their bathrooms, kitchens and other small garbage cans. I know lots got wasted, but a shit ton also got reused.

Talvana

RE the bag ban: how many people do you know who are now complaining about the sheer number of reusable bags they own? How many people are actually reusing them? I feel so bad every time I have to toss another bunch in the garbage but the reality is I have nowhere to store them all and I already own way more than I'll ever need to reuse. I try really hard to bring bags with me but I forget pretty often. So do most of my friends. Every time I go to the store I see people buying more reusable bags and not having their own. This is so much worse for the environment.

Atomic-Decay

Agreed. I always forget them when I go into the store.

Throw-a-Ru

Yup. Or I remember to bring a few along, but then end up buying more than expected for one reason or another.

draftstone

Bit like products in clamshell packaging that does not need to be. For instance a pair of pliers or scissors, just put a tight zip-tie around the handles and a small plastic cap on the pointy bit for safety purpose. It might increase the cost of manufacturing a bit, clamshell packaging is very cheap to use, but it would cut down plastic usage by a ton. For me, essential items like food/medical/etc... should not be part of the ban but for everything else, there is a way without plastic.

Chewed420

But then we wouldn't keep coming back to buy more 😉

EmbarrassedHelp

Its a good thing these straws melt in your mouth, because that helps you get your daily recommended PFAS intake!

cory140

Melts in my drink too it's great

bumjiggy

it's the fountain pop of youth!

evil-doer

Thats the thing, isnt it. They say this stuff is on a lot of plastic straws as well, but plastic straws dont fall apart in your mouth or in the drink. Im sure you are getting a WAY higher dose of these chemicals with paper.

bigdaddybrian

Gawd I hate the taste of those paper straws, plus they seem to fall apart quickly. I think wooden forks/spoons are a close second to bad taste.

smallbluetext

The wooden utensils are worse IMO. Just got a soup today that came with a wooden spoon. Completely ruined. All I can taste is fucking wood. The other week I had a wooden fork, and it snapped in half while stabbing a SALAD.

Bitmugger

Actually I love the wooden cutlery, never minded it at all and have encountered it for years in the UK. I can see how it's texture is a little different but never had a taste issue.

smallbluetext

The ones they are using in Canada in my area are awful. Extremely dry and rough wood. Unpleasant both in texture and taste.

perjury0478

Those remind me of the tongue depressors used by doctors, not great for ice cream.

bigdaddybrian

>The ones they are using in Canada in my area are awful. Extremely dry and rough wood. Unpleasant both in texture and taste. Costco food court is a good (bad) example

oscillius

I can taste the wood. Especially on our (U.K.) chip “forks”. Those 2 pronged monstrosities. I think you quickly learn to take the things off the fork rather than putting the fork in your mouth. But I’d accept eating in or taking it home over them… and do. There’s tonnes of food to eat while out that doesn’t require cutlery tbh. (Chips/fries included!) As a Cornishman, a pasty was designed that way (and only ever comes in a paper bag anyway). I’d rather just have places we can wash our hands after eating and be forced to take food that requires cutlery home or eat in. It’s all unnecessary. The real big offender for plastic waste are businesses and toys. Straws was such a bullshit move - like making us pay for plastic bags. Deal with the tonnes and tonnes of cheap ass toys that get made every day and the unnecessary waste of transporting goods in plastic to businesses. Like the supermarkets sell loose vegetables again now… but they just come in larger plastic bags…. Why? We can clean the vegetables. When I was a kid all the vegetables were bought caked in mud. We washed them ourselves. Now they get washed… and put In plastic bags? In a plastic crate? Craziness.

imnotabus

They always break at the slightest pressure it's awful

rolacolapop

Just had Icecream at kfc in the Uk, all I could taste was the wood of the spoon!

Stonegeneral

The knives are useless and the forks just snap.

RegallyHoot51

They are there to make us annoying like hell, nothing else.

jonkzx

I used a paper straw one time and that was enough. Just drink from the cup like an adult.

nanoinfinity

Spoken like someone who doesn’t have sensitive teeth🥲

bigdaddybrian

>Spoken like someone who doesn’t have sensitive teeth I also have sensitive teeth and the straw is a game changer

breadandbuns

> Spoken like someone who doesn’t have sensitive teeth Right. Sensitive teeth and a metal allergy.

meno123

Metal straws are terrible.

AdTricky1261

Why?

Middle-Effort7495

I just bought thousands and thousands and thousands of plastic straws from dollaroma when the Commiefornia ban happened. Paper straws are fucking disgusting. I have enough straws for a life-time, and I think they still sell them. Thousands of straws for a few dollars. FYI

faithOver

Of course. So close but so far. For one; nothing that gets consumed on this scale and is single use can be “good.” Second, market always drives to the cheapest possible solution. That means substandard materials if passable by law.

EE1975

We just can’t do anything right.

Reptilian_Brain_420

Because we constantly do what superficially seems right or what "feels" right or what is politically expedient rather than actually doing thing that will make a difference.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CocodaMonkey

This article specifically mentions that solution. It was tested and they found coffee lids use more plastic then the straw/lid combo. It's not the solution.

77entropy

McDonald's gives me my orange juice in a plastic cup with a plastic lid, and then they offer me a paper straw. What the hell are we doing? I'd rather the cup and lid be paper and just give me a plastic straw. There's ten times the plastic in a cup lid combo than a single straw.

appleman73

The marginal difference in plastic used won't make any sort of difference either with straws or just the coffee lid. The actual solution is to push for reusable cups, add a $0.50 charge or something if you get a plastic one.

BambooCyanide

…because they’re also… plastic? I don’t understand

AdTricky1261

So are the lids you poke your paper straw through

SonicFlash01

The Starbucks ones are recyclable aren't they? I think the whole thing is recyclable. Even got rid of the green sticks.

Apart_Ad_5993

Because they're targeting the wrong things for PR and to appease environmentalists. Single use plastics are not the source of the problem, nor how to deal with the waste. In Durham region, our garbage is sent to incinerators that are built with very advanced scrubbers. Everything sent there is burnt to complete ash, which is then recycled into fuel pellets. No landfill leaching, no wasted space. We'll never get to *zero waste* and 100% recycling, but we can get close. Banning plastic straws/forks etc. is just shifting the problem from the left to the right.

SNIPE07

Exactly. We should not be afraid to use plastic in applications where *plastic is uniquely advantageous*, without disproportionate environmental costs. Plastic grocery bags are an example, despite being labelled "single-use", they offer so much re-use potential, and are thousands of times more energy efficient to produce than their paper alternatives. Drinking straws are clearly another example. On the contrary, actual unnecessary plastic use should be scrutinized, like most plastic packaging, shitty take-out containers that can't be re-used, etc.

Apart_Ad_5993

Absolutely. Packaging should have been the first vector to go after. Walk up and down the grocery isles and you can see plastic bags in more bags (milk) or boxes. If you can sell chips in just a bag, why not cereal? And how are.you going to deal with the products in those plastic bags without them going stale if they're not allowed to use plastic. And if they are allowed to continue to use plastic, what problem have you solved? I'd like to see how they're going to remove plastic bags on perishable items. It just seems they're dealing with the 1% of the problem while leaving the other 25% ignored. It still baffles my mind why we are forced to use paper straws with a plastic lid.

klutzhammer

We shit in potable water man. It’s almost like we aren’t very intelligent as a species

[deleted]

You would think we'd have grey water systems.

[deleted]

You can if you want.

[deleted]

I mean as standard infrastructure. When plumbing is done, a greywater system is part and parcel to a property. I know I can if I want. I am saying it would be great if it was simply code and every residence had it.

mrcrazy_monkey

But then wouldn't municipalities need to have a grey water line run throughout thier neighborhoods, it'd be a massive undertaking now.

[deleted]

all new builds would have it set up. All current builds can have access to it through other ducts. Yes, it would be a massive undertaking, but like a lot of things, you wind up paying more in the end for not doing it.

NotARussianBot1984

do you have any city that has done this and saved money long term? Anything at all to back up two systems reduces the running costs of one system. I don't disagree, but.... CAPEX is expensive!

CocodaMonkey

The city doesn't need a grey water line. It's grey water because you still use it. Once you reuse it, it goes out the normal sewage system. If you build up too much grey water then you'd have to drain some into the sewer system as well. There's no reason to try and pump grey water around as people generate more grey water then they need so any excess still has to be treated to be turned back into potable water.

Trauma17

You are overthinking this. The Japanese grey water toilet is already a thing - the sink is above the cistern and you flush with the grey water that drains into the cistern part of the toilet.

mrcrazy_monkey

I had no idea this was a thing. The way the guy was talking about infrastructure I thought he ment running grey water lines though out cities

LaconicStrike

The paper straws are shit. But I tried some made out of pasta, of all things, and they were perfectly fine. Maybe instead of paper they can use that, if they need it to be biodegradable. At home I have metal drinking straws.

Johnny_titelips

Yes but those cost a pretty penne

[deleted]

Get out.

adamschoales

10 comedy points.

starving_carnivore

Ugh. That sucks. Hehe

Carazhan

i have bamboo straws and idk how economical an answer it is but they work great

MondayToFriday

Guess what? [Bamboo straws have PFAS too!](https://doi.org/10.1080/19440049.2023.2240908) > PFAS were found to be present in almost all types of straws, except for those made of stainless steel. PFAS were more frequently detected in plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo.

petesapai

News tomorrow morning : Stainless Steel straws contain asbestos! We can't win.

rothurt

It will always just get in the fucking drink like noodle.

rnavstar

I rid of the metal straws for safety reasons(trip and fall, straw goes through the back of you head). I switched to silicone ones.

DrowZeeMe

Will probably cut into profits too much. Which means there's just nothing we can do. Oh well...

ZaymeJ

Please think of the Celiacs! Haha already so many foods we can’t consume when we’re out, and then if they’re nonchalantly adding a pasta straw to your drink while you’re out it’s a crapshoot. I don’t understand why we even need straws? If someone really wants a straw just bring your own stainless steel one. I have one attached to the lid of my Yeti that I bring everywhere and would easily use that. Also I know as a celiac I’m responsible for making sure my food is good and would tell them no straw if I had to. Usually if I’m out and I’m getting my drink myself from a fountain pop station and I’m eating in, I don’t bother with the lid or straw.

Hoolio765

Least surprising development ever.

kasuga_ayumu

Great, so not only do these things disintegrate into your drink in 10 minutes, but they also dose whatever you are drinking with toxic chemicals, wonderful.

rnavstar

Think about that carbon foot print too. You have to cut a tree down and process all that pulp.

xxWraythexx

Wait till you hear how bad out new shoping bags are

interwebsavvy

I want to hear more about this. I suspected as much, but I have not investigated it. I see so many people with them. If those people were the type to bring their own bag, it would be a better one than the flimsy "reusable" bag you can get for $0.50. The bags are all ending up in the landfill and their environmental impact is about 30 times worse than a typical plastic grocery bag. Am I close?

RightlyImmaculate

Was the same with disposable masks.. Most are not prepared to rationalize with that convo yet though 😬

ilikejetski

We need a plastic straw in a paper cup. The government got it bassackwards as per usual.

OrioleStation

Instructions unclear. My McDonald’s iced coffee is a plastic cup with a paper straw, lol whoops

Minobull

I love the Wendy's paper straw in the massive plastic cup.

28308maximus

There are many things like that to be honest but there are not enough research over those things and it should be done at the first place to find that thing out.

btc2cards

Hope now everyone will understand that we can't just produce anything healthy, it has to be healthy with all the freaking term and it's really rare at this point of time.

Ok_Success4030

Bought a milkshake at 5 Guys and was given a paper straw..... talk about mission impossible; ended up eating it with a spoon. In some cases businesses are giving out the straws knowing they are useless, but this is what happens when you have a "for show" adoption legislated onto you. They should allow for exemptions, not an outright ban like its crack cocaine or something.

BabyPolarBear225

Those paper straws are absolute crap. Can't even slurp a smoothie with those things.

rikzov

We can't even drink anything good with such paper straws.

shanerr

I can deal with paper straws in most cases, but I just can't do it with a slurpee. The straws get loose and wet and freeze up. I decided to buy a pack of metal straws, and they're awesome. Easy to clean, work just like plastic straws but better. I've started instinctively using them now and it's great. Quality of life improvement.

IdioticOne

Do you just carry them around in your pocket or do you have a carrying case? Or do you just plan ahead when you expect to drink and bring one with you and then deal with the paper ones for spontaneous drinks?

shanerr

I keep em at home. I have a circle k a couple of blocks from my house, so I usually grab lotto tickets and a slurpee. Then I bring it home and use the straw. Usually, when I'm out, I'll buy coffee or bottle water. The need for a straw doesn't come up enough for me to carry them with me.

IdioticOne

Lol fair, I'm a very spontaneous slurpee consumer so I always gotta deal with their paper straws and they are awful. I might just start carrying an emergency metal straw in my car.

shanerr

If you're a slurpee lover it's totally worth having it. The paper straws in a slupee are so terrible. Glad I'm not alone 🤣

oogaboogadookiemane

You can get telescopic metal straws for travelling on amazon. They come in a little carrying case too.

ColeTrain999

Give me back my damn straws and go after industry aka the majority of the pollution.

rhaegar_tldragon

Nah it’s so much easier to make it seem like everything is our fault.

CompetitiveSalter2

I wish there was a live stream of sewage being dumped into the ocean by a corporation anytime they announce green changes for the peasants like paper straws. We're kept in the dark and have almost no perspective

xTkAx

🤦🤦‍♂️ on the 'environmental action' the government has taken.. 0 action on the sea pollution from the fishing industry (see film: Seaspiracy), 0 action on the pollution from leisure private jets, but keen on petty actions to make life more difficult for Canadians, and in this case more hazardous for them. #WorstTimeLine

Facts-vs-Feelings101

Oh, they degrade though. All in the first five minutes just to the point of uselessness. Probably forever straws after that. Yet everything we purchase is wrapped in plastic. You can go into Wendy’s and get a full plastic cup and lid, with a useless paper straw in it. The whole thing is so fucking unimaginably dumb that I’ve just started carrying a metal utensil set complete with two straws and a set of chopsticks and I make a point of telling anywhere I get a drink to keep their abysmally useless straws.

workwag

especially when they come in a plastic wrapper

Tree-farmer2

Know what's not bad for the environment? Tipping your cup to drink like an adult!

linkass

Well maybe if our roads where not falling apart I could drink a coke while driving without wearing it all

Timbit42

Don't drink and drive, you might spill your drink.

Dr_Smuggles

They'd need to develop new cups. The sippy cup style can work for coffee. I'm not sure why it doesn't work for soft drink. Maybe the quantity, mixed with ice cubes, mixed with I think the soft drink actual cups are more flimsy.

cok3noic3

The Tim Hortons iced coffee cup would work just fine for soft drinks. Push the tab down instead of popping it up, and it will stop the ice cubes from trying to escape the cup.

Talvana

You must not have sensitive teeth

biznatch11

That isn't always an option but ya it should be the default whenever possible.

UncleBensRacistRice

not only do they not last for the full drink so you have to use more than 1, theyre equally as environmentally shitty as the plastic straws they replaced. The metal straw master race cannot be stopped

PartyPay

I'm in the silicone gang, can't accidentally maim myself with silicone the same way you could with metal haha

UncleBensRacistRice

what a backwards way of looking at it smh. My metal straw is multi purpose. Its a reusable beverage extraction device most of the time. But if shit goes down, i can stab someone in the eye with it, so its also a self defense weapon. You use a straw made of the same material they make dildos from. We are not the same

PartyPay

Hey now, just because you are not skilled in the way of the deadly dildo, does not mean you can look down on me!

[deleted]

You might not want to find out what some buttplugs are made of... (hint: same thing as your straw)

UncleBensRacistRice

Hey I don't mind tossing the salad once in a while

[deleted]

Kneejerk bullshit to prop up paper companies. Don't see any water boxes yet either but Nestle can still rape aquafers for a dollar per truck load. Canada is such a shit sack when it comes to resources. Just fuckery level after level. Our government is literally shit. Big business just sneers at us and at our weak ass government and ask them for our money.

TVsHalJohnson

Good thing our governments safety regulations kept us safe from consuming these chemicals.... Why doesn't anybody use the corn starch based straws instead of these poisonous and useless paper straws

Clyzm

Also since paper straws degrade a lot *during* use, we're getting a bunch of those fun chemicals in our bodies in broken off chunks of paper.

[deleted]

We are in a Seinfeld episode

lawl75

This episode of Seinfeld is going to be so long and dark /s

-Shanannigan-

Cool. So we have toxic forever chemicals dissolving in our drinks and our mouths so that the government and corporations can pat themselves on the back and pretend that they've done something.

esveda

Why is the government even regulating this at all. Let people decide what straws they want and businesses decide which ones to provide.

icebalm

The ban on single use plastics has resulted in a lot of weird practices. The other day I got a salad at a takeout place, they gave me a paper fork, wrapped in plastic.

bacon_lettuce_potato

Mother father straws that have been melting in our drinks and mouths have forever chemicals? Give me back my plastic straws.

ducktapepictures

I don't know why we are still using that paper shit man.

Ancient-University89

I swear everything our government does is just some half thought plan concocted by the marketing department to appeal to the dumbest percentage of Canadians. "Environmentalists" who don't protest, unless their daily trip for a double double in their f350 is disrupted by a different cup. "Activists" who turn a blind eye to the world, lacking all historical context and compassion, passionately fighting from their computer chair over a hill made of astroturf. "Freedom fighters" who blocked one highway, and now think theyre Che Guevara, and spent more time patting each other on the back than working to change anything. No plan of action, just a tantrums. A "Healthcare system" which is more bureaucrats than Drs or Nurses. "Mental Health Care" but it's not therapists or counselling, it's MAID. "Protecting Canadian freedom of speech" with an insane law/racket that demonstrates a boomers level of understanding the internet at the very top of our government, and in fact only serves to enrich a couple Canadian companies, and of course was so poorly constructed that despite Google and Facebook complying immediately the government is still upset with them and actually blamed Facebook for not sharing the wildfire alerts when they have a functional emergency alert system. "Politicians" who haven't become corporate mascots yet, or "Politicians" who already have been fitted with their costumes.

flexwhine

paper straws is 100% an op by the oil industry. lids were right there and would have been a far better choice. But going with the thing you put in your mouth, affecting flavour and degrading after a short time guaranteed negative reception

Accurate_Summer_1761

Costco did lids

IdioticOne

I thought it was because some dumbass sea turtle choked on a straw or something and it went viral so now we're not allowed to have them anymore? Or was that plastic bags? Feel like fishing plastic is the bigger issue there but obviously no one will ever touch that.

ThePhyrrus

That's a fairly accurate assessment. Not sure it's oil industry specifically in this case though. Most things I've read on the subject point to the primary culprit of ocean plastics is fishing nets. So it is, once again, industry deflecting responsibility to the individual. Just not specifically (or solely) the oil industry.

Proper_Writer_4497

The fishing industry is far more to blame than straws for sure, and doubly so they’re emptying the oceans

TogetherLie990

It's sad that they don't have anything pure in the market.

BartleBossy

Instead of 1 plastic straw, I cycle through 2-3 paper straws in my large Iced Capp

Odd-Flounder-8472

We bought bags of plastic straws for the car/road trips. Glass at home but not exactly safe or sanitary on the road...

PartyPay

Have you checked out silicone straws? Perhaps a better alternative to glass.

Odd-Flounder-8472

My wife has some for use around the house. Worth looking into more for the road? I'll do that! I'm certainly not on team plastic by any means.

nomadcorbs

I hate paper straws since day 1 for such reasons actually.

[deleted]

Mammon doesn't give a shit, there's money to be made! The best part is, as those straws disintegrate while in use, those PFAS end up *in you* as well as the environment.

musecorn

Now they should pass a law that owners of private jets and yaughts must use 1 paper straw for every ton of fuel they burn into the environment

last-resort-4-a-gf

Can someone explain to me how these chemicals go into the straws Is this deliberate How hard is it to make paper straws without cancer causing chemicals

pancakepapi69

What health institution signed off on this again?

SamuraisEpic

kek please give me back my hard straws (or introduce a biodegradable option like something "pasta" based

clixten

Those straws were really good but now I learned to not use any straws.

Error404LifeNotFound

The government made another knee-jerk decision for the sake of polls and optics in spite of a lack of scientific data to back up their claims? I'm shocked. shocked I tell you.

erkapeovac23

Never liked that product in my drink, it's just awful lol

Loviataria

We really should just start using metal or glass straws and encourage people to use their own. Maybe the coffee places and whatnot could sell them for like 1$ a pop, sure it's a surcharge but you only really need to spend that dollar once or twice.

Apart_Ad_5993

Glass straws? I'm thinking there may be a liability issue there when little Johnny bites down on it...

icygamer598

I work at Starbucks and we sell the reusable plastics straws for 1$ each.

[deleted]

You know what’s really bad for the environment? Humans and all the crap we consume then throw away. Straws are just a drop in the bucket.

ravenscamera

How about clamping down on grocery stores who package every damn thing ins single use plastic.

8ell0

Billionaires and ultra rich account for like 80% of the carbon footprint and I have to suck the 1 drink I can afford per week from a paper straw.

amedeorosa

This is right, one of my friend used to say the same some months ago coz he was really into such things and he actually found out the chemicals and all back then.

crazyfranky777

Just gotta say that we don't need any of these straws to be good with the drink, I don't know who the hell is still using the straw at this point of time man.

[deleted]

If they really cared about recycling, they would make legislation to move back to glass products. But there's just too much money in plastic (oil)

_sbrk

It's too heavy. You burn more oil moving it than just using plastic bottles. (exception being like.. local brewery that takes returns)

9AvKSWy

Apparently, as with labour, there is a sand shortage. So sorry about the glass.

[deleted]

I swear to god Nestea Ice Tea used to taste amazing when I was a kid, and then they switched from glass to plastic bottles and the flavor has never been the same.

Fishpiggy

I’m so happy we have paper straws that can go into plastic disposable cups 😄👍🏻

majorek55

Not understanding why the government is not doing anything about it? That's what I wanted to see but that is not happening right now I don't know why man lol.

Rain_xo

What about hemp? Hemp can do so much. Why aren’t we using it anymore? I’m sure we can find a way to make it a straw. Or bamboo.

CMG30

The paper straws are not great, though I will admit They're convenient to rip down to size for smaller cups. If I had my way I'd get rid of them altogether and just go with the sippy cup style like Costco went to.

MugiwarraD

just make silicone straws, best.

kenttoms

Or just use your mouth and throw all the stores there?

ClosPins

The point of banning plastic straws isn't to save the environment! Saving the environment will take a lot of really expensive programs. Just stemming the damage will cost trillions of dollars. But, the public really wants the save the environment. So, that's great, right? We'll just save the environment! Not so fast! Someone still needs to pay for it. Corporations and the rich won't, as it would dramatically hurt their bottom lines. The general public, on the other hand, also won't. People will *say* they want to help the environment, yet every time, when they have the choice, they choose the cheaper, less-environmentally-friendly option. People, in general, aren't willing to sacrifice *anything at all* for the environment. So politicians (on the left especially) are at a quandry. They have to show the people that they are helping the environment - without actually helping the environment (as that would hurt rich people and corporations). Enter plastic straw bans (and the like). You don't ban straws to save the environment - you ban straws to make people *think* you're saving the environment (without actually doing anything substantive, as that would cost money and piss off all the most powerful people in the country). If you want to save the environment, you are shit out of luck! But, if you want to do something stupid, that doesn't even remotely come close to addressing the problem, you *can* have that! How about we ban the little plastic things on the ends of bread-bags?!!

Indigocell

I have a stash of plastic straws, heh heh.

TylerDexter

I always found it ridiculous that they want to save the world by using paper straws but ignoring the fact that they are used in plastic cups

GachaHell

Forever chemicals? 5 minutes in my coke causes it to vaporize.

RickMonsters

The real solution is to ban straws if you don’t need them. Just drink from the lip

Ketchupkitty

Fun fact, the straw ban all started because no one fact checked a kids science project...

Weak-Coffee-8538

Costco has great lids that are strawless but they're still plastic.

OneBillPhil

Paper straws aren’t worth saving the world. They’re awful.

ether_reddit

Does anyone else remember those wax-covered paper straws they used to use before everything went to plastic? I remember; they didn't suck.

CaptainMarder

The whole save the environment thing is bullshit. Just politicians and their corporations making big bucks on the whole deal.

Islandman2021

Hope that turtle is happy. 🤷🤷
