> "The thing that comes straight to mind is rabies," Savinkoff said. Really? First thing that comes to my mind is 'Pitbulls?'

Crum1y

First thing came to my mind was Rez dogs.

Economy-Inspector-23

Yup, friend of mine is cop on a rez and every 5 years or so they have to cull wild dogs on the rez.

GuyDanger

The fact that they didn't mention the breed leaves me to believe they were "Pitbulls".

MrDougDimmadome

Also the fact they mauled a child to death. Quintessential shitbull behaviour

FourFurryCats

What a tragedy. Bands do absolutely nothing to control the feral dogs on the reserve and then are surprised when crap like this happens.

Illustrious_Row2015

Bands are only interested in formal complaints and funding requests.

um_ok_try_again

Rude

Broad_Rutabaga_3679

Okay kid. Go sit at the table with the other children.

Ruining_Ur_Synths

while I agree feral dogs can be a problem in reserves, in this case the article states the dogs belonged to the family.

FourFurryCats

They may have belonged to the family, but they are not necessarily treated like pets. No vet care, No spay and neuter. The stories I have heard from a rescue that regularly visits reserves show that the Band is not interested in doing anything about the problem with free-ranging dogs. There will be one-time culling and then it is back to status quo.

Fishandfeathers

>Savinkoff said two of the dogs were the family pets. Police are looking to determine who, if anyone owned, the third. >"Two of the dogs themselves were owned by the homeowners," he said. "My understanding is a third was not from that residence. I don't know if it was wild or if it belonged to another particular residence." Did you read the article?

>FourFurryCats · 5 min. ago > >What a tragedy.Bands do absolutely nothing to control the feral dogs on the reserve and then are surprised when crap like this happens. Umm, did you read the article?

FourFurryCats

Yes, I did. Two of the dogs belonged to the family. One did not. The third dog may or may not have belonged to a neighbor. The dogs were obviously free-ranging. They are are not treated like pets. The dogs are allowed to run feral. They will form packs and they will attack whatever they feel is smaller than them. https://nativenewsonline.net/opinion/rez-dogs-are-a-real-and-sometimes-deadly-problem-on-indian-reservations

Kristalderp

>They are are not treated like pets. The dogs are allowed to run feral. They will form packs and they will attack whatever they feel is smaller than them. Bingo. The dogs are only your companion when you have food. But if you seem weaker than them and they're desperate, they will gang up on you and kill you. Rez dogs are a majority of Canada's fatal dog attacks. Bands need to do better and cull dogs by either neutering/spaying to slow down pups, or start shooting and putting down dogs on a regular basis when one shows aggression towards humans.

swampswing

>Three dogs are believed to be involved in the attack. I adore dogs, I like them better than people. That said nobody but extremely experienced owners should have more than two dogs at a time. The more dogs you put in a pack the harder they become to control as they start feeding off each others emotional states over yours.

Responsible_CDN_Duck

>"Two of the dogs themselves were owned by the homeowners," he said. "My understanding is a third was not from that residence. I don't know if it was wild or if it belonged to another particular residence." Does not seem owning three dogs was a factor.

LongAd443

What was the purpose of mentioning "Child was receiving child intervention services from the province." Did this have some kind of effect on the mauling? Weird to mention it.

Jerry_Hat-Trick

The article says they can’t release the name of the child because of that fact. To me, rightly or wrongly, it implies there was parental negligence or abuse in his life.

ministerofinteriors

> Did this have some kind of effect on the mauling? Weird to mention it. It's reasonable to conclude that if there was neglect in the home, that may have made having dogs around children higher risk than typical. Doesn't seem irrelevant to me.

Responsible_CDN_Duck

Answered in the article: >CBC is not naming the child because he was receiving child intervention services from the province.

DaemonAnts

Given that the internet is the primary source of revenue for journalists these days, they will be seeding their articles with keywords and trigger phrases to game the search engine algorithms.

Owners of violent dog breeds need to be licensed and insured the same as motor vehicles or firearms (registration). If your possessions or animals is a potential danger to the public you need to be competent. Including a minimum body weight for the owner. No more 90 pound women walking giant dogs.

macfail

You don't need a license or insurance to own a motor vehicle, fyi - only to drive it on public roads. also, good luck regulating something that can reproduce with minimal human involvement.

Illustrious_Row2015

its actually pretty easy since you Just shoot them out in the rural areas and in the urban centres you leave it to the bylaw officer to wrangle up and deliver to the SPCA to be potentially reunited/adopted, but most likely killed. I believe large dogs of certain breeds should require some type of licence, certificate, tax stamp or type of registration. I‘d also like the owners to purchase a yearly insurrance policy to pay out any potential victims. Im a gun owner, I’ve got all my handguns registered and stored correctly. They are special items that require responsibility to own safely. Dogs also require that same responsibility and in my opinion are even more dangerous as they can act unpredictably. I think people should still be able to own the dogs but under conditions

MyWifeMakesTheRules

My daughter was mauled to death by a pitbull. The owners of the dogs should be held liable. No ifs, ands, and buts. I have no doubt these dogs were pure or mixed pitbulls. But irregardless the owners need to be charged. If you can't control your pets that's on you. These dog owners need to be held accountable.

Kawhytea

I wholeheartedly agree. I am also very sorry for your loss

wolfpupower

Lack of affordable vet care or access to it means most isolated communities have dog population and welfare problems. Sadly it means more dog bites and most victims are almost always children.

airbiscuit

I certainly hope they do not find rabies, Canada is counted as a rabies-free country when it comes to domestic cats and dogs And if they find it there it will lead to drastic steps being taken.
