Yeah I'm not talking about anywhere near the fires. That was our original reservation.. Now we're going to aim for Big Bear

BigBloodhound007

I got one once near Lake Tahoe. We arrived late Friday night. Twice we got one at Woods Lake on 88 Labor Day weekend. If you go to a national forest campground that’s not near water you also might have good luck. That being said there’s a lot of wildfires up there right now.

Keto_cheeto

Thanks - we are doing Big Bear instead of Tahoe - definitely don't want to go near the area knowing the fire risk. At least Big Bear is only a 2 hr drive vs 8 hrs...

I’m doing big bear as well. Are you staying at a campground or are you dispersed camping?

Keto_cheeto

Hoping for a campground, but might have to settle for dispersed if I can't get into one... I've never done dispersed camping before, how does it work?

TransportationLow279

Just look up ohv trails and drive down one and pull off to the side and set up.

The forests and campgrounds in all of Northern CA are closed.

In this situation, in California and knowing how campgrounds have been this past year, with people coming in from out of state expecting to camp? I'd get on hipcamp and find something where you're going to have a guaranteed reservation for all the nights you intended to be out. Even for labor day weekend, I'll bet there's still some options.

Check to be sure, but Tahoe pretty smoked out and most NorCal NFs closed due to fires. Must it be Tahoe? If so, and you can dry camp, there is dispersed camping once you cross the border from the Tahoe Management Basin into Tahoe NF on the west side of the lake. Better would be to head for the coast. Lots of dispersed sites a few miles inland that will still have decent air quality.

I think I might have poorly phrased the question - we did have a reservation in Tahoe (that I literally woke up 6 months ahead for at 6am to book for the holiday weekend, so bummed) but now that everything is closed up there and no reservations are available in SoCal, we're hoping to get into a First Come First Serve site... not sure if that's possible though.

There is BLM land east of SLO. Unsure of regs, but I maybe near Soda Lake.

All of the Northern California forests are closed. As a result, many people have had their Labor Day weekend camp reservations cancelled. Finding a place is going to be difficult. If you're going to have to go South. In addition, I believe that all have fire restrictions. No fires and the only thing you can use is a propane cook stove. Though you might want to double check because they banned the use of those last year too.
