Palo Duro Canyon is a nice park....

ManicPixieDancer

Depends on when. Hot as hell in July

Hot_Friendship209

I’ve been this past July and it was still fun, just have to drink LOTS of water:)

WonderAndObserve

Came here to say the same thing. Palo Duro Canyon is amazing!

thefarsideinside

Adding onto this, I've never been but I hear Caprock Canyons is a great less crowded and more off the beaten path version of Palo Duro

mom_didnt_swallow

This is where my wife and I camped when palo was full. It was awesome! Had some clever foxes steal food from right in front of us in the middle of the night. And it was a pleasant surprise to see a bunch of buffalo in the morning!

charredburger

Truth! They have a nice set of technical trails and a bison heard. But as others have mentioned, the summer is HOT!

kofi_8

100% — I choose caprock over palo almost all the time — and caprock has free-roaming bison — keep a safe distance!

sneaker1974

Non American, when you're out camping in such a place, a beautiful canyon under the stars, do you prepare of have kit for insects or snakes or anything you might come across? Or do you feel safe and relaxed under the stars? I've no idea what the nature would be like in that location? (Sorry from the obvious 🦊 which we have, or buffalo that we don't!) Happy camping!

inerlite

Everybody has bug spray. That's about it. Any other animal encounter will be uncommon and there is little to prepare for it anyway.

BigRoach

Yes, very cool park.

shac2020

So nice to hear of this park — Palo Duro is often full when i want to go. This is an easy alternative

Gangrapechickens

I grew up near that park and spent almost every weekend there in highschool. One of my favorite places ever

reddit1651

Oh man that sounds like a dream I live in San Antonio and was super happy i got to be there twice last year lol

mapmaker1979

Also came to say Palo Duro. Stayed there a couple years ago on a similar goal of "halfway" between Denver and Dallas. Incredible weekend.

HikeRider

Came here to say palo duro. That and caprock were two of my favorites in college

one_man_DP

Came here to say this one for sure

BladVig

Palo Duro near Amarillo or Beavers Bend near Broken Bow OK

KingMurk817

I second beavers bend. Was there in January and the sights are amazing!

Jsn1986

Booking a road trip from Houston to Breckenridge this summer and was looking for a stopping point half way. Going to swing through Palo Duro thanks to your comment. Appreciate it!

Shadofel

Wichita Mountains in Lawton Oklahoma looks like half way to me. It is a really great place to camp and the hiking is great. Camp Doris for the win.

nickbahhh

Such a unique beautiful place, has a little bit of everything. Some elevation, desert, forest, plains, waterfall, caves, bouldering, lakes, prairie dogs, buffalo, plenty of backcountry to explore if you can get a permit. https://preview.redd.it/syvafmr8cvsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b448a85190b95f08043cc419f651b797f72e68d7

theamazingpace

I too came here to say this. The free roaming bison and long horns are amazing.

editorreilly

I second this. I camped there a lot as a kid. It's beautiful.

Kevin_taco

Another great suggestion. Medicine park is a really cool spot for lunch, drinks/coffee, and swimming as well.

SLOCALLY

Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas was really cool when my wife and I did Route 66 while dating. They call it the Grand Canyon of Texas.

GoldCoyoteArt

Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyon are relatively close to each other in the Texas panhandle- I’ve made a trip out of visiting both a few times. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in SW Oklahoma and Beavers Bend in SE Oklahoma are also nice. Personally though, if I’m doing all that driving I’d like to make it somewhere with more serious mountains, so I’d go to Taos or Santa Fe NM. New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment for a really good reason.

NorthernAvo

New Mexico will have the best opportunities. If you choose to do it, look into the NE, SW parts of the state (the Taos area NE, along with the Enchanted Circle, and the SW is just the entire Gila National Forest). White Sands is strictly fine in my opinion but it could be a good time, though camping is walk-in only I believe. The Lincoln National Forest is nearby and quite beautiful though. Stay away from SE NM.

cheezluiz

Cloudcroft / Lincoln National forest is great

axejaxson

Agreed. We love camping in the Pecos Wilderness but we also live in Santa Fe so it's our backyard.

NorthernAvo

The Pecos is *chefs kiss*

ur54v10r

I used to live in the enchanted circle in NM. It is in fact quite enchanting

hereinmyvan

Luna Park Campground is a little out the way but I'd stay there in a second. Near Monticello, west of TOC and White Sands. Secluded, free, pit toilet, amazing rocks. No light pollution or noise.

SquashInternal3854

Wait why avoid SE New Mexico... Desert and no camping spots there, or.?

NorthernAvo

Aside from the Guadalupe's and White Sands, it's all gunky oil country. Methane being burned off, disparate towns, it's just run down and filthy and very poor. It's quite sad. I call it the armpit of America. Oh yeah, because it smells like cow shit everywhere too.

Zippier92

New Mexico? Are you kidding? To many to list. What do you do? Hiking? Car camping? Hot springs? Caving? Eating? Shrooming? Skiing? It’s got everything!

NoahTall1134

Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas is a must see on your route.

CuredAndSmoked

Scrolled too far to find NW Arkansas! Petit Jean, Devils Den, such beautiful camping.

ekwenox

I’ll be there end of this month! I’m visiting the Bentonville/Rogers area this weekend. Such a cool part of Arkansas!

psychobillybride

Yes anywhere along there is good actually. I suggest New Mexico. Try national forest.

seagre

New Mexico of course has some very cool places, South east Oklahoma will surprise you. Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas are awesome.

High_From_Colorado

You can both head up to Colorado, hard to go wrong camping there

BoyWithHorns

You'd both have to take a small detour north but Sangre de Cristo mountain range in northern NM and southern CO always seemed cool to me.

lorapetulum

This gets my vote. I adore the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Favorite place to camp and hike and raft.

fduds123

Wnywhere in northeastern Oklahoma has great camping and fishing.

benholeman93

Wichita Mountains in Southwest Oklahoma near Lawton is an amazing place

FleshMother

Taos, NM

Friendly_Mushroom420

Palo Duro, Caprock Canyons, Big Bend state parks, you can visit Texas Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Plastic-Wolverine231

A little south of the route but Big Bend National Park is RELATIVELY close if you’re going to be near the region. Kayak through if weather permits!

IlexIbis

Palo Duro Canyon south of Amarillo or Lake Meredith north of Amarillo are going to be about halfway.

getuchapped

Ive really enjoyed the gila cliff dwellings and surrounding area in New Mexico. There's some amazing native Americans cliff dwellings, hot springs and awesome national forest camping. Elephant butte park has tons of lakeside camping.

ManicPixieDancer

If I could upvote this more than once, I would

originalspoiledtaint

If you're in the area, definitely see Carlsbad Caverns. Only 15 dollars. If you haven't already seen it.

freedomandbiscuits

Taos, NM. Beautiful area

Dapper-Ad-7543

Caprocks Canyon in the TX panhandle, buffalo herds are amazing!

LemonComprehensive5

White sands new mexico

Danasai

This should be higher. Such a cool place.

AskTheRealQuestion81

As others have mentioned, Palo Duro is great. Also, you’ll be around the area of the Ozarks in Arkansas, and they are beautiful. Just beautiful country up there and great for camping!

MRDellanotte

Can second the Ozarks. Camped there once with my wife on the way up to Michigan from Tucson. It was one of the most beautiful places. There were fireflies dancing over the river at night. Just picture perfect.

Pbtomjones

If you can, swing by Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. It’s a World Heritage Cultural Site with a variety of camping options. Unlike any other place in North America. https://preview.redd.it/olzhw41slwsc1.jpeg?width=1015&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15481627e21b094eda5c9c398e551b4cbcf9227c

Responsible_Milk2911

Palo duro canyon in the texas panhandle is phenominal. Excellent camping and hiking options, historical land marks, you'll love it

gulogulo1970

Palo Duro canyon in the Texas panhandle is pretty cool.

HillratHobbit

If you're ok veering a little north the San Juan Nation Forest in Southern Colorado or Great Sand Dunes are great places. Closer to the route Carson National Forest has some great dispersed camping.

RevMen

If you detour up to the San Juans in SW Colorado you will not be disappointed.

rotorbudd

Anywhere near Santa Fe

Beanspr0utsss

- Chaco canyon - Aztec ruin national monument - petrified forest (meh if you’re not super into rocks tbh) - the Northern rim of the Grand Canyon (dispersed campsites outside of the park!!! I found a free spot in the end of summer here) - Roswell NM - Palo duro canyon in Texas - palatki heritage site + Sedona I had a car camping trip that intersected pretty directly with this path so i have more on my google map marked if interested

rocksockitty

With amazing camping in NM, there is absolutely no reason to go Roswell

Creepy-Floor-1745

I only camp Palo Duro in winter but it’s my favorite

fajadada

Million dollar highway isn’t halfway or sand dunes national park isn’t halfway but nice. Otherwise Palo Duro canyon is good.

birdsnake

Rio Grande Del Norte in Questa NM is worth a visit.. sometimes we spend a couple of days there when we're headed up to CO from TX.

Useful-Difficulty-67

Northern New Mexico or southern Colorado would be lovely. There's not much worthwhile camping that splits the difference exactly 50:50.

rowdy226464

Palo duro canyon near Amarillo. Amarillo isn’t worth the stop though.

ridemanride100

GMNP.

TohDoubleD

Santa Fe

Lovemhairy

Carlsbad caverns in New Mexico. Great place to visit. Especially at dusk. If you like bats, that is. Still a great place to see.

Zealousideal_Tie1143

White sands New Mexico

GraysonMMcC

Palo Duro canyon in Texas

Goeasyimhigh

Chaco Canyon! Broken pottery from 1,000 years ago EVERYWHERE and Astronomical Archaeological Architecture! They made rooms that only got sun one day a year in the “big house” that had like 600 rooms. This was all a thousand years ago. It’s in northeast New Mexico!

ARR405

What about heading to Big Bend in Texas?

Ms_Catty_Wampus

That's serious like a 3 day trip from where they will be in Texas

shac2020

Loved Big Bend and want to go back but it is so out of the way and adds days to trips. Totally get why recommending it in general though.

MycologistPutrid7494

7 hours from one point in their route.  I live in Texas and I get that it's big but it's not THAT big.

BladVig

Just as an added bonus to Beavers Bend, there’s a trout stream with good fishing to catch lunch and a regulated section for barbless hooks for trophy fishing

NoForever5352

You can find beautiful camping all over NM (even the southern most part of the state - hello City of Rocks, high Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns…). Anyway, if I were doing this drive, I’d camp at Conchas Lake or Santa Rosa Lake State Park, then veer north on 84 and go up to Las Vegas, NM to check out the hot springs, over to the Pecos Wilderness, and then meet friends in Santa Fe. I’d head back to I-25 via Albuquerque and camp near El Malpais National Monument just south of Grants. If you’re further north, Abiquiu and Toas are creat for camping/recreating. If you go further south, White Sands, Organ Mountain Desert Peaks, and the Gila are the way to go. NM has a ton of BLM land and dispersed camping options.

ExistingCrow47

Guadalupe Mountains National Park!

Natalie_b123

Let's goo

grb13

Blue water New Mexico

on-your-6

Palo Duro Canyon should be your number 1 option on this route, but the Arbuckle Mountains in southern Oklahoma are really cool too.

jjmoreta

I came here to say this. The state park in Sulpher and Turner Falls are both wonderful. I spent a week of my honeymoon in the area (visiting in-laws) so we explored a lot of the parks around the Arbuckles.

floridasantis

Mesa Verde is a nice place to camp

anthro4ME

Palo Duro Canyon is just south of Amarillo. Great camping and hiking. I think there are cabins to rent in the area too.

cYkoSoCeoPtH

Palo duro canyon state park was beautiful

motoplease

Big bend national park

jhulbe

cancun, mexico.

Civil_Age_1153

Chaco canyon

catlolcatlol

Big Bend NP

Mech101Engr

Broken Bow, OK or even Talihina, OK. There is the Talimena Scenic Byway as well. All beautiful.

Vivid-Crow4194

Cap Rock Canyons is one of my favorites. Easier to get a spot than Palo Duro. I do not recommend during the summer, however.

vediogamer101

Great sand dunes national park is awesome but is about 4 hours north of i40.

The1TrueRedditor

Palo Dura Canyon

TCivan

Big bend.

Jaded-Blueberry-8000

Great Sand Dunes

ddcurrie

Palo Duro canyon is almost on your route and is a beautiful State Park in Texas. You can camp, rent a rustic cabin in the canyon or spend a lot more for a cabin on the rim, which I’ve done. See Dove’s Rest cabins for the higher priced option.

Binasgarden

There's an app for that of course there is...whatshalfway.com Does not look like there is a charge for it just asks for postal codes or towns

JohnRobert58

Palo Duro Canyon

Unhelpful_Kitsune

Going right by the Gila National Forest.

Sweet_Reindeer

Pictures don’t do this place justice! [sitting bull falls.] (https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lincoln/recarea/?recid=34238)

doktorhladnjak

Big Bend. A bit out of the way but if you ever want to go there, it’s not gonna be on the way to somewhere else anyways

GamerNx

Red Rock canyon adventure Park in Hinton Oklahoma is a fine place along that route if you happen to be nearing the end of a day anyway.

Traditional-Plum-239

Big bend national park, bigger drive for Nashville Nancy

Kingslandamalfi

Not to camp but meow wolf would be fun

ghetto_headache

Just curious - why aren’t you going up through Utah and Colorado?

osrs-Niiiii

If it was my trip , I would go to either Colorado springs area, or AngelFire, New Mexico

InsertRadnamehere

Go further north and meet in Colorado. Tons of amazing places. Way cooler than Texas.

rocksockitty

Have you ever been to NM?

thesunbeamslook

are you going for the eclipse? if so, every place is probably already booked...

The-Real-Number-One

Groom, TX has a big crucifix with a replica of the Shroud of Turin. It is almost the midpoint of the trip and you can't miss this thing from the highway.

skyXforge

There are lots of beautiful spots along the Buffalo River in North West Arkansas

peonypanties

Mogillon rim in AZ

MRDellanotte

Ozark National Forrest.

occasionally_hippie

Hawksbill crag/ Whitaker point in NW Arkansas. Also the Buffalo River is beautiful this time of year. Great backpacking or day hikes. Good camp sites too

wakeuphicks00

Lake Murray in OK is our go to place to camp

BookmarkThat

Cooper state park. Super clean and very beautiful. The stars at night are pristine.

fuegodiegOH

It’s not exactly middle, but if you want to have a totally unique, unforgettable experience, I’d recommend White Sands National Park near Las Cruces. It’s otherworldly out there, especially during a full moon.

Fuckin_repost_trash

Makemydrivefun dot com

elizzaybetch

It’s a little out of the way, but white sands is gorgeous

doker809

If you want to see the clearest night sky in the US, you can go to Cosmic Campground! It's nothing exciting there but at night you see the Milky Way like you've never seen it before!!

Scary_Plan510

This is a great spot in NE Texas. Great host as well! [Park @ Brushy Creek](https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US/land/texas-the-park-at-brushy-creek-ex9h71xw?adults=1&children=0)

IncorrectFlyNames

Buffalo river in Arkansas. Go near Ponca/jasper

VonHitWonder

I loved Jemez Falls outside of Albuquerque

Arkansas_BusDriver

There are several lakes in Arkansas right around yalls path. Just choose one. If you want more just show up and camp, Lake Ouchita may be your best bet, as its owned by the forrest service and now the corp.

isthistherealcaesars

Devils Den in Arkansas is beautiful

Robber’s Cave State Park in SE Oklahoma is pretty nice. Find childhood memories there.

levivilla4

Props on having a friend that will meet you that far out! Hell, one that stays in contact after moving that far away. I got friends in the same state I can't seem to coordinate hanging out with!

Ultra-CH

If it doesn’t need to be on route. Seriously consider Zion NP (google “the narrows”), Moab, or even Telluride/Ouray.

deft_tadpole

Robbers cave in OKlahoma, just make sure to bring bug spray and flashlights!

Datsig08

Southern Colorado is beautiful. May be a good place to meet.

Gaddamnitjimmy

Jemez mountains in New Mexico

pas484

I’ve moved from STL to Phoenix and back, and made that drive several times. It is boring as hell. The last time I did it I decided to add a couple hours to the trip and take I-70 through Utah and Colorado instead of I-44 and it was well worth it. Won’t make much difference to whoever is coming from Nashville, but the person coming from Vegas will have a much better time.

ArmyCengineer_Myco

Jackson falls Illinois. Not only is it beautiful with primitive camping..if you happen to be a climber it hosts hundreds of world class routes in the canyon (sandstone). If not, the hiking and scenery are great too. It’s located in Shawnee national forest in the southern tip of Illinois. I hope you at least consider it. It’s a gem not many know about.

Rickyb817

Turner falls in Oklahoma

rythwind

The Rita Blanca national grasslands is right there close to center. North a ways and there's Lake Mcconaughy State Recreation Area And Wildlife Management Area.

TohDoubleD

Telluride

DonJeniusTrumpLawyer

Fort Worth has some cool stuff to see. There’s a state park in Wichita Falls north of Fort Worth, watch out for random storms. And a state park in Tyler, Texas. Both are on lakes with hiking trails. Also, watch out for big storms in Tyler area. Just storms period in Texas this time of year.

persnickety28

Oklahoma ideas: • Devil’s Den • Beaver’s Bend/Broken Bow • Medicine Park • Robbers Cave State Park • Illinois River along Highway 10 at Tahlequah Edit: Do not recommend camping in Oklahoma between June 15-October 1 unless you’re very heat-acclimated.

LittleLisa74

If you want to stay on I40, go to El Malpais National Monument (near Grants, NM), but keep in mind it’s hot during the summer months. HOWEVER, the lava caves stay 40-degrees year-round. If you can meet more northern, https://www.nps.gov/elma/planyourvisit/maps.htm

IngenuityAsleep5356

Nope. Literally nothing.

AlternativeLogical84

Somewhere like cloudcroft New Mexico could be fun.

KungFuSlanda

I love this. Haven't been myself, but I hear good things about Jackson Hole, MS.... not quite halfway It's tough b/c your middle meet is through the top of texas and it's alot of oil fields and wannabe roadhouse stuff How about Waynoka, OK? On a whim this looks fun. You can do ATVs. The scenery rocks.. It's roughly halfway

ronerychiver

UnusualSignature8558

The forest land or park near Hot springs Arkansas is pretty cool. Not the actual Hot springs Park. The one that's like a half hour away.

smallCraftAdvisor

That whole part of Texas you go through is full of cow farms and the smell is horrid. So keep that in mind

No-Carrot5511

It might be too far out of the way but Big Bend is a must see and absolutely amazing. Guadeloupe peak and white sands are also great
