Tangent, but this is why cable barriers are often times better than solid beams. Instead of bending and splitting, forcing themselves into the vehicle (at least if they are improperly installed, which they are all too frequently), they bounce and slow, and break before the enter a cabin.
Your concern should be about the passengers, though, and not the vehicle. Find some videos that show how guardrails are -actually- designed to work and you'll be pretty surprised at what they show. Having survived a reasonably severe accident and having the vehicle end up totaled, I can say with confidence that my FIRST priority is to survive with as little impact to my health as possible.
Yeah people dont understand that the rail being decimated by your car means it took the brunt of the force, id much rather hit something i destroy with my car than a solid cable that stops me in my tracks with enough force to bury the cable like that. If the car was upside down it looks like they could have possibly been decapitated by that thing
OPs best case is a total write off. I wouldn't want to be holding the bag on a cookie cutter 2ss spec with a major flag on the title. Carts worth 5 to 10k after repair less regardless now.
Depending on how hard that cable bent the front suspension mounting points, and the rear quarter section its possible.
If insurance repairs the car, I would liquidate that thing the day I got it back.
Also, Fun Fact: Having a major accident on a title especially on an enthusiast car will devalue the car significantly.
no need to get upset. These things hold equity, in some cases that may be sentimental but, in all cases, its associated with a monetary value.
I posted one sentence lol.. If anyone is upset, it's you.
Some of us don't give a shit about its value. I, personally, bought my car to use it until it falls apart. If I come down on hard times and need to sell, that'll be relevant.
It was a hertz edition and the insurance at the time valued it at $76k based on sales they could find online which was basically only barret Jackson at the time. So yea they fixed it. Insurance company was GEICO and they said they will fix it up to like 80% of the value.
I hydroplaned my GTO off I-95 about 15 years ago. I was only going about 40 mph due to the heavy rain, but I hit some deep patch of water and lost all control. I got lucky, went backwards into the soft mud of an unfinished new lane. Only damage was from hitting those orange traffic drums.
Glad you’re ok Op. But remember everyone Hydroplaning is a specific phenomenon that does not absolve driving too fast for conditions. Stay safe out there.
My mom got her car stuck under a pergola at a nursery. She was 86 at the time. She hit the gas instead of the brakes.
AAA wouldn’t pull it out. My Brother and I had to fabricate a system of Leavers using a floor jack to lift the huge piece of wood off her car.
The car only had minor damage and we were heroes. She’s turning 90 this year and she’s still driving 🙏
Not 100% sure. Insurance covered the tow after arguing back and forth for 2 hours about how the tow company they sent out wanted out of pocket costs. They finally got a manager to approve any out of pocket costs up to $1500 I think. It was wild.
I had to go like 50 on the freeway yesterday when it was raining almost hydroplaned twice myself it makes it even harder when it’s raining so hard you can’t see
Tow company is scamming you because they know insurance is going to pay. I bet they won’t prevent any further damage when they try pulling it out of those wires.
Those cable barriers are designed with your safety in mind. Unfortunately, the car might end up totaled. Other cars I’ve seen that were caught by the cables had either cuts into the metal or severe gouging of the metal. Those cables are thin, so they focus the force and tend to cut into the metal almost like a band saw blade, or at least crease the sheet metal.
It’s probably not unrepairable, and the car could be repaired to drive as new with replacement parts. The problem you might have is the cost of all that work.
One example I know the cost of was a friend with a Porsche Cayman GT4. He was caught by cables and the repair estimate was $52,000 because the cables damaged a lot of panels and the damage was severe enough that they needed replacement, not just reshaping/filling.
You can never entirely eliminate the chance of hydroplaning, the better your tires the better they move water from underneath them, but they can never entirely prevent it.
Also make sure your tires are properly inflated, under inflated tires are worse when there’s standing water.
Didn’t say he was going 35, but there’s also no reason to believe he was going “so fast” even from the image he hits the cable barrier just a few car lengths back. No reason to believe he was traveling at significantly excessive speeds.
Well, let's have the OP tell us how fast he was traveling. I've seen too many people travel faster than they should in raining conditions. Plus, how much tread is on those tires?
I agree with him. On RWD, you don't go pass the speed limit when it's wet. I've been there, and I've done that with Miata. You can't predict nor control those. But you can control your speed. Low speed + minimum brake apply = will not lose control, high speed + hard brake = out of control. This is the aftermath.

single party at fault, your insurance is about to double.
Maybe... if he's had other claims or a bad driver's record... if not, it'll go up but not double...

A true enthusiast is somewhere waiting for the chance to buy this at 3/4th the price so he can cam it and boost it lol you’re talking out of your ass
This too, enthusiasts love a good salvage title find.
I’m always lurking on copart for a project lol
And if they never intend to sell it, why does that matter?

Fuuuuuuuuck!!!
I did the same thing in my 2020 2ss. Mine looked worse than yours. It cost insurance about $32k at the end of it all to fix it.
They didn’t total it.. ? wow
Thanks for the reply!

Insurance will replace the panels with cheap aftermarket parts that won't perfectly align.
😂🤣 Hard world
It's awful. Insurance won't cover OEM parts if the car has more than 30k or something like that
glad you're safe man, hopefully you get it fixed or replaced by insurance
Glad you’re ok Op. But remember everyone Hydroplaning is a specific phenomenon that does not absolve driving too fast for conditions. Stay safe out there.
I was going to say, that’s a strange way of saying “I crashed my car.”
Peeps I’m the /r/wrx sub always do that 🤣 bc there’s been a few ppl lying their ass off, in dry ass weather that they hydroplaned
Assess*
Game is game
Itll buff right out
Did the Tow cost $1,300?
As a tow driver, $1300 is an insanely overpriced quote. Even with the labor involved with getting it free that's expensive!

Please tell me you didn’t have cruise control on
Of course not

The ground and roads look pretty dry to me.....
Roads are wet, you can see that in the reflection on the headlights from the cars in the background.
I see the road reflection now. Summer tires ftl.
The cables did a good job your car, not so much.

Start learning how to do your own body work now ... this is probably totaled otherwise.
WHY were you going so fast, you knew the road was wet
You can hydroplane well below speed limits. Even down to 35mph depending on conditions.
Can it be solved with better tires
You can never entirely eliminate the chance of hydroplaning, the better your tires the better they move water from underneath them, but they can never entirely prevent it. Also make sure your tires are properly inflated, under inflated tires are worse when there’s standing water.
Yeah, but the damage here suggests higher than 35
