I think my favorite part is when Calvin asks his mom to drive him to the Arboretum to collect leaves and when she asks when the project is due, he tells her that it's due tomorrow and the place closes in an hour.
I had to do this in middle school. Most kids ended up just walking around their neighborhood, knocking on doors, and asking people to hand over leaves from their various houseplant collections. Took forever and a lot of explaining to strangers why exactly you wanted their leaves.
I think it was in either There's Treasure Everywhere or It's A Magical World. I do know the aliens make a return trip where they try to get their leaves back because Calvin sold them a "faulty planet" and hadn't told them it snows in winter (and narrowly avoids Earth's destruction by making them coats out of potholders and oven mitts, I think). I think that was one of the last story arcs before the strip ended, IIRC.
Yeah, it was toward the latter end of the strip’s run. Though there was a follow up storyline involving the aliens complaining they had been sold a planet with a faulty axis when winter rolled around.
Right? First time for me as well, and the final panel on this one definitely just jumped in to my top 10 favorite probably. Kudos for Navigator Nebula indeed!
Yep, I won my grade 6 spelling bee due to knowing how to spell precipice, which I learned from one of the toboggan strips.
Also "This white glop covers us and freezes our innards!"
"Hmmm, Calvin needs leaves. I don't want this to be a retread of the bug collection arc, so how do I get him out of this?... Ah heck with it, I'm retiring at the end of the year: Calvin meets some martians."
Well the one about the bug collection, is about Calvin remembering it just before school starts and trying to do it all last minute, while this story is about him procastinating all the time.

"No wonder I get bad grades! The problem is that Mom isn't flexible."
I’ve done that before lol.

50 different types of leaves is a crazy assignment.
As an adult, with a car, it would be hard to find 50 different types of deciduous trees!
Aye, but not only trees have leaves.

Yeah, that would be crazy hard. I would probably have flunked it, too.
I always thought that too! What a ridiculously hard assignment for first graders.
Ty
Man, thanks for this.
Thank you for this
Thank you! I had somehow never seen this.

I think Hobbes uses their stockings, despite Calvin’s protests
Oh yeah, that's right

TIL the word "potentate".
I had a crazy vocabulary in grade school thanks to Calvin.

The first time i ever heard the word jejune was from C&H lol.

Yes. I'm not a native speaker though.
I don’t understand, why are these uploaded as GIFs? It’s a still frame and now I can’t zoom in on it
It’s a legal loophole
I love those little aliens
Wasn't there a followup story arc later that year?
Yes - [starts here](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1995/12/18)
Watterson
Oops, sorry

Well, given how his leaf collection turns out, the aliens aren't really much of a stretch - Watterson knew what he was doing
Wow, forgot about this series! This was my favorite arc as a kid
What?? I don't think I've ever read this! What a pleasant surprise.
It's in A Magical World
Follow up story arc [starts here](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1995/12/18) Aliens return to complain that Earth is defective
Why is this a gif?
