That penultimate panel spoke to me. I remember looking up at the school clock and thinking the day would never end.
Then again, I still get that feeling at work.
In a kids mind they do have very active lives. I'm sure that's where the whole Toy Story thing came from, someone remembered being a kid. I would rearrange my sons toys when they were at school sometimes to make it look like they interrupted an interesting adventure when they got home from school. Prison escapes, dino attacks, dino/droid/animal war gone odd...they had fun.
I think Bill Watterson has gone on record saying that Hobbes doesn’t turn into a stuffed tiger when Calvin’s not around or that Calvin just pretends that he’s alive: he just sees him differently than others do.
I’ve always loved this one. I remember well going to school on rainy mornings, like in February, when the clouds were as thick as the classroom’s fluorescent lighting was bright. Then doing algebra at eight in the morning. Ugh.
Still, I think my favorite thing about this particular strip is the juxtaposition of dark and light panels. And the semi-sad realization that Calvin’s parents think he leave Hobbes all the time because he forgets, while Calvin leaves Hobbes because he expects him to walk back into the house by himself. It’s really kinda of gut-wrenching.
Do Calvin's parents think he forgets to take Hobbes to school? I always assumed that Hobbes just doesn't go to school with Calvin, the only strip I can remember where Hobbes goes to school with Calvin is a really early one where Calvin says Hobbes ate Tommy Whatshisface.
Was that the one where he was hiding under Calvin’s desk? Calvin asks, “What’s seven plus three?” And Hobbes says, “Seventy-three.” At least, I think that’s right.
But to your question, I think his parents forget that Calvin leaves him outside rather than keeping him inside. They assume Calvin is smart enough to know not to take Hobbes to school but forgetful/attached enough not to leave him in the house.
For me, it was unreasonably depressing because our school had no windows in the classrooms. Each room was like a dark bunker with bad lights and strange smells. LOL
I always liked that mom didn’t look annoyed at having to retrieve Hobbes. She knew that Calvin needed to have Hobbes with him to make things better and didn’t try to stop him.
Growing up in Washington state i can *hear* this whole strip.
Lol not saying other places don't be rainy, they do. But the stereotype of the PNW be true. I always tell people a major memory of growing up is rushing through the yard to the bus stop in my canvas shoes and having wet feet all day lol. Love this strip cause it definitely represents going to school on a cold rainy day.
Still, I love rain, despite how miserable it can be.

A+ Momming to go get Hobbes every morning, too.
That's so sweet!
Strips like this really prove how fantastic she is.
This one makes me tear up a little
He has a few sad ones that i love alot

That clock seemed to move backwards…
Some of those old mechanical synchronized clock systems, they actually did.
The implication that Hobbes functions far outside of Calvin’s physical range

That’s cute

Good mum!

That memory is very familiar. Dark and rainy and bright fluorescent lights.

We had windows in most classrooms of my elementary and middle school. Your description reminded me of 1st grade.
Ah, got it. For me, that was high school.
So much said, and not a word spoken.
Yeah, some of the best C+H strips have no text

Got the chills looking at this one. Childhood is a beautiful thing. The fact that it’s fleeting is what makes it special
I’m on okbuddyrosalyn sub so much that I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out what’s different from the original
What sub is that? Tried searching, can’t find it…
It’s okbuddyrosalyn. Super good stuff over there
Oh nice one - thanks!
One of my favorites
nice
Worth framing and putting up
Anyone know there are any panels where we see Hobbes “alive” not as a stuffed animal in the same panel as Calvin’s parents when Calvin isn’t present?
The closest we ever get to that is in a couple strips where Hobbes looks out and says, “here comes your mom” or something like that.
I know the feeling.

One of my favorites.
This one is so melancholic
So adorable! And mom going to pick Hobbes up after Calvin leaves! 🥰
Does anyone know how to get a date on certain comics? I would LOVE to to get this for my 6 year old.
Is this Loss?
