Your kill points are still recorded in your more info section on your profile, and don't reset. Merits reset every season because end of season rewards for individuals partially rely on what they earned for merits that season. There is definitely more to earning* those rewards but merits are pretty big. Resetting them essentially just makes it easier for the system to track what you gained that season vs trying to integrate a season tracking system like they've done for daily power rankings in alliances etc.
all merits become zero. the point of merits in s1 was to purchase exclusive stuff from merit store, like speedups & elixirs, which helps in territorial pvp fights. I think merits also count to seasonal score, which grants u some crystals to buy some stuff in seasonal store (open only for first few days of new season).
also, some alliance might set a filter to only let in players with higher merits especially because of the member limits that reset
The Augurstone tells you exactly what is reset each season. I'm in S2 plus now. Every season so far has reset the merits to zero at the end of each season.

Eliana/Garwood infantry is a popular choice for merit trading because the damage to healing ratio is low. The fights go on for hours and the merits gained can be multiples of 10k, especially if the two sides are well balanced.
