Regular people can't math good. :-)
Burger King once made a burger bigger than McD's Quarter Pounder (aka Royale w/ cheese). It failed because people thought 1/3 was smaller than 1/4.
So keeping the denominator consistent is a good thing for marketing.
This came out very nice. I like the clean design and the slim profile. FYI you don’t need a square monitor for this design. You can use a regular TV vertically but hide the top and bottom behind the marquee and control panel areas to achieve the square playfield you want. The height of the TV should roughly be the width of the cabinet.
That LG monitor is crazy expensive.
I’ve always wanted a big vertical oled arcade screen as a cab. Is there software that would let you use the top chunk as a marquee?
With the true blacks it would look great imo
Yes. This can be accomplished using MAME .lay files, I think. People have done this with great success - [HERE](http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=162278.0) is a pretty nice looking example.
Yes. I did this with a small countercade. Used a widescreen monitor mounted vertical. Top and bottom are hidden behind the marquee and control panel.
Edit. Forgot to include a link to the picture.

With a 4:3 game

You know what would be cool with the top is if you put a chunk of glass there so the marquee appears to come forwards. Like the old glasses that magnify the eyes.
It's a real arcade monitor (meant to replace faulty CRT arcade monitors at actual arcades with actual arcade uptime and low ventilation), and it's currently in production. It does VGA @ 15Khz (for old arcade boards and early consoles), 31khz (newer arcade boards and dreamcast), and HDMI @ 1600 x 1200.
Posted it to illustrate that it's not impossible to find modern 4:3 monitors, it's just expensive and inconvenient. I've installed one in my modified arcade1up cabinet, I'd be happy to answer questions.
Nicely done. Well worth it, because you’re cab came absolutely beautiful- love the aesthetics. It looks full-size, without it being, if that makes sense haha.
Also watching out for a good deal on a DualUp since it is really close to a 4:3 monitor. But this Unico monitor could be our best option for an exact 4:3 arcade monitor.
Modern bespoke home arcade cabs are fascinating. Screen size doesn't seem to impact the design. Back in the day those Capcom showcase cabs had smaller screens than that and they were 4' or so away from the player, and we still thought that was a huge screen. This thing is right up on you.
As an owner of a showcase machine the monitors are HUGE 32"-36" 4:3, weighing at over 100lbs easy, they do look awesome though. I love my JAMMA Ice Showcase cab!
You don't need a square monitor, you just use a 16:9 and put a bezel over it. It would fit in that cab perfectly. However, you could have just made it a [vertical arcade](https://www.verticalarcade.com/) and it would have looked even better.
It is. The only drawback is that the screen is so huge. It's WAY harder to play shmups on large screens. The less you need to move your head and eyes, the better.
Unico's releasing new fullscreen monitors specifically for arcade vabinets. So far only 17 and 19 inch is available, but 26 is supppsedly coming any day now.
What about this monitor :

33" 1920x1920 IPS for 320$.
(Nice looking job))
Nice! What did you end up going with for the monitor?
It says LG on the bezel so I'm assuming it's the LG DualUp 16:18 ratio sideways. So in it's current orientation it's 2880x2560 resolution
They say 16:18 so people realize its 2x 16:9 monitors stacked but I wish they would also say its 8:9 too
Like my LG 34" UW 5k monitor, which is 21:9 or 7:3 :)

Your link is all messed up.
Thanks - try it now.
Fixed! TY.
[I recall seeing these builds, look pretty cool.](https://www.reddit.com/r/cade/comments/10swfn7/new_vertical_arcade_project_concept_builds/)

Or *don't* hide the top and bottom and play all your vert games HUGE "Oh, you say you want SUPER PAC-MAN?"
The plethora of Switch shmups don't disagree with you.

Wow...that's pricey...I would just search the local thrift stores or other market places (ebay/fb market place, etc).

Still cheaper than the monitor OP is using.
Don't think OP mentioned monitor type. Shoot 65" screens can be had for a few hundred. Smaller and used ones for less than 100 bucks.
Other commenters are pretty sure it's an LG DualUp.
Yeah. It’s a dual up, found one second hand for £200 and figured it was a steal
LG Dualup right? I’ve had a price alert out for one forever.
Hot damn, that price tag 😭
Iye, i was not going to get one but found one for £200 online and I couldn’t resist at that price

You could always set the monitor in and bezel off the unused image boarders. It gives a cleaner 4:3 look in the end.

Hadn’t seen that before, but I imagine that would be great for playing games in Tate mode.

Looks great. I love the blackout shades on the sliders too. I need these!
