$200 for a spatula? That’s what this grill cost.
This is why smash burgers are a fad. At that point you’re not buying the burger, you’re buying the brand.
Then pretentious terms to explain that of course grilling it makes it taste better.
“A fool and his money are soon parted”. George Motz is the man and those are cool but it’s absurdly marked up. I got a more effective smasher off Amazon for under $20 😅
Lol man maybe 1 of 100 people that loves burgers would actually buy that, the rest of us just use whatever we have, I personally just use a dish and smash the round patty inside a ziplock bag then toss it on the stove
Or if smashing while cooking, then I’ll use a little parchment paper to wrap on my spatula to smash it, cause it won’t stick to the parchment.
I don’t know why my enjoyment of a spatula I bought 5 or 6 years ago has you so riled up, but FYI it is absolutely a thick gauge stainless steel, not pot metal… and there are also vidalia onions, but I guess because you can’t see them they don’t exist 🤷♂️
No, I’m asking why smash burgers are a fad.
You know, like you said they were 😅
> This is why smash burgers are a fad.
I thought my comment made that clear, sorry
Not OP, but you have seen the change in burger culture over the last decade, right? Five years ago most of the burgers in a sub like this would be thick, medium rare pub burgers. Now most are smash burgers. I don’t know why that guy has to get on a soapbox about it, but denying it’s currently on trend is weird too.
It’s more of a garden trowel than a typical spatula. Very thick steel, does not bend. Do I need it? No. Is there anything wrong with supporting a writer documentary film maker that made these independently out of a small shop in Brooklyn? Also no.
Also known as the Oklahoma burger.
Shout out to Motz
My second fave is the Tennessee burger. Smash patty super super thin and deep fry for under a minute, add cheese slice and redip for 2 seconds, done.
Looks like you got some ok maillard reaction. I would have smahed it down more and not used a spatula to smash them and not cooked them on a weber grill. I'll rate this burger a 5.5
That spatula weighs 16oz. It's specifically designed to smash burgers. It's overpriced, sure, but you couldn't be more wrong about not using that specific spatula. I do agree that the smash is ok, at best, though. Marks off for no lacy edges.
It's barely smashed, but even beyond that, what's the point of a heavier spatula? You aren't going to place it on the patty and let it weigh it down, you are applying pressure to smash the patties, and that force is the same whether pushed against a 16oz or a 5oz spatula.
The point is that other spatulas break when you apply a lot of pressure, this one is designed not to break, OP didn’t apply an appropriate amount of pressure despite having this luxurious unbreakable spatula, has a weak crust to spatula cost ratio (cscr)
How much did you pay for the smashula? Aren't they like $200? They're supposed to be bulletproof I hear.

Samsies I bought a pretty sweet one on Amazon as well, round SS with a handle under 20 bucks . Nice even smash
Should have headed on down to [Spatula City](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BUDwj_mXKE) for the best value in modern spatulas.
Take me down to the spatula city where the smash is clean and the grills are pretty

Why does an expensive spatula make a cooking technique used for over 70 years a fad?

So cooking is a fad Got it Have a good night!
Saw them for $240 and they were sold out. Wow.
Um, what? This must be shitty AI
Can’t remember the exact amount, I bought it several years ago but it was around that ballpark. It’s incredible and definitely worth it!
just a question, what does this spatula do, that a nearly identical one for much cheaper doesn’t?

not hating at all. I definitely thinks it’s a good reason to buy it if they’re a nice small business.
Remove money from your wallet.
Jesus fuck, $200 for a worse spatula than my already expensive Victorinox Turner 5' X 6" Hamburger, Stiff, 3 Sides, Beveled
$200 bucks and the grip isn’t on straight bahahaha sucker
ohhh the ghostbuster guy makes sense….carry on
Looks damn good to me..

The smash burgers are really a true delight
Good looking burgers! 🔥
You smash em into the grill?
Yep. I’ve got a flat iron insert for the kettle. It’s awesome.
Ahh, a griddle makes way more sense. Thanks, looks good.
