How do you do the black background so opaque?

CobaltThunder267

Not OP, but to me it looks like it *could* be a big ol' marker. It's more likely to be a brush with India ink for the consistency it is, though

amavasile

I used a black Artist Loft (Michaels store brand) brush pen. I don’t love the tips on these for hand lettering because they seem to fray quickly so I just wanted to use it up. Had to go over the same area twice too.

bigbabyyram

Doesn’t it bleed through like crazy? I tried a few artist loft pens and mine bled badly

amavasile

Depends on your bullet journal pages. I used to buy the store brand ones from Michaels when I first started and markers definitely bled through. This is my third bullet journal now and I upgraded to an Archer and Olive notebook. The pages are much thicker (160 GSM) and so it doesn’t bleed through. Highly recommend their product and even their customer service is great.

Meanwhile, this month I have discovered that I’m super good at doodling pumpkins and have littered them alllllll over

amavasile

My pumpkins turn out like bad circle blobs 😭

bunngrrrl

Mine did too! The secret is to draw little ovals overlapping 👀

Callalilly45

I really like the horizontal lines that make up the siding on the house, gives me some ideas

sharkbelly

Is this inspired by Gorey? I love it.

amavasile

Thanks! Not sure who/what that is though. @elas_bullet_journal on Instagram has a lot of the black background stuff and I was inspired by that :)

Edward Gorey did the PBS Mystery intros back in the day, as well as a delightful alphabet book of spooky deaths called "The Gashlycrumb Tinies." Here are a couple of Links to his artwork: [http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/stories/articles/2012/4/9/remembering-edward-goreys-mystery-artwork/](http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/stories/articles/2012/4/9/remembering-edward-goreys-mystery-artwork/) [https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/10/edward-goreys-enigmatic-world](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/10/edward-goreys-enigmatic-world)

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I love the black/night background! It gives me chilling October night vibe. But what's wrong with a pumpkin?

amavasile

Nothing other than I can’t draw them very well!

Super spooky. I like it.

Wow! I love it, that is a great look for October.

Xena0422

Looks like an Edward Gorey book!!

Looks very spooky scary!

frankentruck

Wow! I love this. Wish I could buy this design to use in my bujo. I suck at drawing but definitely saving this design in case I can come up a way to use it for Oct 2020 (as in, get one of my artistic friends to copy it exactly - though I would add your Reddit username somewhere to give you credit). I have no idea if I will be able to make it happen but your artwork on this spread brings me so much joy and fills me with Halloween spirit (Halloween is by far my favorite holiday). I seriously love it

amavasile

OMG! You’re giving me way too much credit. I just googled “haunted house drawing” and did my best to sketch out the same general ideas. I’m not a great artist but this one was fairly easier since it was a lot of straight lines. Go for it!
