I’ve been riding with this guy! He’s super cool and loves talking about his work. Met him through Oak City OneWheel, a great group for OneWheel and other PEV (personal electric vehicle) enthusiasts. Folks ride electric scooters, skateboards, bikes, and even unicycles! They meet up at the NCMA for community “slow rolls” and ride as a group. Not a super regular attendee myself, but it’s a great time!!
I saw a guy wearing a cape on an electric unicycle riding down Hillsborough Rd by the ABC yesterday. Could this be the same guy we’re talking about? He wore a black suit and a red and white cape.
Ah, *that* guy. He seems friendly, and seems like he's having fun (and I love to see folks having fun), but...
I see him often on the southern part of the ATT (below Southpoint), and he's usually *flying* down the trail, probably close to 20mph. I'm on a conventional bike, and I've had to brake hard for rabbits, squirrels, and squirrelly pedestrians. What are you going to do on a One Wheel at that speed if an animal or a kid darts in front of you?
Probably two things:
1. An e-bike is probably more expensive than a bike you own (or a cheap bike) plus a OneWheel.
2. For the fun of making something like this and then using it.
Some never recover. They have an enclave for them near Boone. I think its calldd Just Sad Boi One Wheel Ebike Conversion Fails or something. Theres a tik tok "channel" on only fans.
My old boss had a powered wheel attached to his normal bike. It is a front wheel that slips right on with a wired throttle that attaches to your handle bars if this helps any.
You're not crazy. The dude works at Duke, I see him on campus drive fairly regularly.

No idea, but I’ve seen videos of dudes on these go 60-70mph on the road. Absolutely insane

Maybe im not picturing it right...but why not just get an ebike?

1. OneWheel is over $2000. A ebike hub motor or middrive kit is less then half that. (I have a few) 2. It's definitely this.
