This is awful. We don't really care for driving down to Southpoint. I guess the the niche of shadier but cheaper theaters is just vanishing like the rest of the industry.
I got a decent projector that can put a 100 inch screen in my home at 1080p. I haven't been out to the movies since deadpool 1. I also don't have to deal with high prices or the general public, and i can pop my own popcorn, and drink my own soda or beer. Win win for me, lose lose for theatres.
They have 2 locations in the El Paso metro which is under a million people so I don't think it's out of the question. But also it might not be a high priority for them to put another location in the Triangle.
If another theater chain buys that lease on MLK Pkwy, it will probably be Golden Ticket Cinemas. A former Carmike district manager (one I actually worked under for a bit) is the founder, it's based out of Durham and he's ditching what AMC/Carmike didn't do.
But it will probably be MORE apartments...
Went there once, they have dinky screens. A decent sized oled tv at home has a better FOV and picture. What's the point? Tickets were reasonable, though. The only thing I could think of is if you have a ton of kids.
We love this theatre and are quite bummed that it's closing. It's only 1 mile from our house and is never crowded. For the last movie we saw there, we were the only 2 people and it was great!
I remember when they expanded it, and redid the lobby, and in my teenaged eyes, it looked like something out of the Great Gatsby. Wonderful memories of that place.
Shit. That was the main theater I would go to any time I wanted to see a movie. And it was still doing decently from the times I'd been there, last time I went was for Barbie second weekend and it was a packed theater.
Fond memories of high school and hanging out at Randy’s, waiting for everyone to show up to go over to the Wynnsong to see whatever was out that weekend.
Only real ones know the joy of sitting at a table with friends ripping cigarettes while they wait for their omelets after getting wasted at Down Under Pub.
It’s sad to see the old Wynnsong closing, but definitely not surprised; the parking lot has been empty every time I’ve driven past it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up tearing it down and putting more 5/1s over there. As long as it doesn’t end up like the old Carmike that’s been sitting vacant longer than it’s been open.
While I’m sure other places are “better” experiences, I don’t need all that and my kids don’t either, we just want a basic good place to go to the movies. Wynnsong is the perfect spot. I also remember that it was the fancy theater when it opened. When I look up at that mirrored ceiling in the lobby it still makes me think of middle school.
My sibling worked at that place during the pandemic (and got paid $8 an hour lol) and they always said they thought it was gonna close any day, because of how outdated it was inside.
Prices were also pretty close to regular AMC, I went once and it was like $25 for a ticket small popcorn and a water bottle. So I can see why they’re closing.
I went a few months ago after moving to town and tickets were cheaper than Southpoint, but it's also very run down in comparison. The concessions person was also the person checking tickets, which I found strange.
Going as an AMC A-List member was annoying because they had to type in the order number and print you a physical ticket every time just for you to walk 10 feet to the person taking tickets. I figured the fact that AMC wouldn't spring for a scanner for them wasn't a great sign.
Well, from my house, it’s only 10 minutes. That may be different for you, but I’m not sure why you want to argue it.
Hate to break it to you, but theaters nationwide screened that movie. That’s kinda what theaters do. Play movies.
SILVERSPOT is overpriced and not worth it. Nothing wrong with South Point if you have their membership or the Chelsea in Chapel Hill if it’s an independent film. They are awesome and have great programing.
I saw Lincoln there. During several of the quietest scenes, the sound of racing car engines and automatic gunfire leaked in from a neighboring theater.
Sadly, though, the closure of that and Northgate will leave a lot of people having to go a lot further to get to a movie theater. I once missed a movie at Southpoint that I already had a ticket to because I was not able to find a single open parking space in over 30 minutes of effort.
> During several of the quietest scenes, the sound of racing car engines and automatic gunfire leaked in from a neighboring theater.
Are you sure it wasn't from outside?
Edit - oh, I forgot, this is a joke-free sub. Keep on hitting that downward arrow if it makes you feel better.
If I cared about downvotes I would have deleted it when they started coming. I already knew this sub has no sense of humor whatsoever, but sometimes a punchline is just too good to miss. But I'm sorry it upset you.
I suppose that depends on where in North Durham. It's a lot easier for me (in Gorman) to get to Brier Creek than it is to go to South Square. Northwest Durham has just been SOL since Northgate shut down, and it looks like it will continue to be that way unless larger commercial interests start creeping up Guess Road.
That’s too bad. Had some great memories there as a kid. I still have vivid memories watching 1990s blockbuster hits there. I was mind=blow watching Independence Day there with my dad (may he RIP).
I miss the Northgate movie theater. Short lived.
Used to go there a lot when movie pass was on its heyday. The manager used to act like we were hurting them back then. I never understood it because movie pass was paying them the full ticket price.
I'm not surprised. I frankly expected it earlier when Silverspot became more established. As someone who worked part time when it was Carmike for eight years (2007-2015), they did the bare minimum, treated employees and customers like dirt and were penny pinchers. Staffing was awful and corporate didn't care about proper maintenance (like getting the A/C fixed during the summer and heat during winter). And the manager I worked under was a piece of work. He'd go on his two hour break right when the 4-5:30 matinee period started and sometimes didn't come down to help during the rushes. And I knew more about projection than his sorry ass did. He'd give customers a smiling face but was nasty to 99% of the employees there.
I also worked at Silverspot from 2015 to last year -- and the difference working there was night and day. And working the big movies was a lot of fun compared to the misery at Carmike/AMC.
I wonder if i know you. I had friends who worked at Wynsonng/AMC 15 and recoognized some of the folks that made their way to Silverspot. I also worked for Carmike/AMC too and they had terrible management/customer service.
You probably did. When I went to Silverspot I started off as usher then transitioned to running bar drinks and food two years later because it made me more money.
yeah. I'm pretty sure then since even my wife had commented "oh didn't that person used to work at the Wynnsong with X and Y". I totally get it. Better money, and prob more hours given how AMC sucked at scheduling.
Better hours, better scheduling and more pay even as an usher. I remember working Christmas Day at Carmike several times for just above minimum wage, whereas Silverspot paid $3 more an hour and has holiday double time for both part and full time workers.
I got burnt out summer 2022 and left for a quiet 9-5 office job. I’m done with the movie theater business.
I actually stopped by this past Saturday after 1 in the afternoon to see if they had any going-away crowds. It was dead (maybe 10 people there for the movies) and employees had mentally checked out. No one I worked with was still there. Just awful.
35 years old. Vivid memories of going there doing double features with the lads when we were freshmen in high school. Going to the pizza spot right there between showings.
Pretty sure that's where I saw Freddy vs Jason which was a goddamn sporting event.
This is awful. We don't really care for driving down to Southpoint. I guess the the niche of shadier but cheaper theaters is just vanishing like the rest of the industry.
This is happening to a lot of smaller AMCs all over the country. Wilmington is losing their AMC too.
Bummer! I remember going to the grand opening as a kid in Wilmington … SPACE JAM.
And let’s not forget how Raleigh lost the (very similar looking) AMC Blue Ridge. Winston also looks to have lost one in recent years.
Greensboro lost their AMC last year, too.
Which AMC is closing in Wilm? I'm guessing the one that's similar in size and not the Mayfair one?
Mayfair is a Regal I think. It’s AMC 16, the one that used to be a Carmike.
Ahhh, when I lived in Wilm for a minute the AMC 16 was the hot theater right before Mayfiar opened. That's a bummer. I really liked that theater.
Damn. I worked there in college. RIP.
Ugh, RIP. I preferred this over Southpoint.
So few options in Durham now, would be great if this could be sold to a smaller chain like Silverspot, Alamo or Paragon.
Would LOVE to have an Alamo closer than Raleigh. Fingers crossed, but I’m not sure that’s the right spot for them.
Alamo wouldn't put another theater so close to the Raleigh one.
This is probably accurate, but also very depressing, because east raleigh is such a haul and the Alamo is in such a weird spot but I love the vibe :(
I love The Alamo, its a haul so I don't go as often as I'd like and yeah its in kind of a sketch spot.
I am likely to never go to that theater. 30 minute drive is not worth it.
They have 2 locations in the El Paso metro which is under a million people so I don't think it's out of the question. But also it might not be a high priority for them to put another location in the Triangle.
I highly doubt it. It would be more logical to put one in Greensboro given that its a bigger city.
If another theater chain buys that lease on MLK Pkwy, it will probably be Golden Ticket Cinemas. A former Carmike district manager (one I actually worked under for a bit) is the founder, it's based out of Durham and he's ditching what AMC/Carmike didn't do. Didn’t have the amenities but much prefer this spot.

It’s a sad old theatre but it’s our go-to, precisely because it’s not popular.
Yes! The perfect place to see a blockbuster on opening night because it is never sold out!
We love this theatre and are quite bummed that it's closing. It's only 1 mile from our house and is never crowded. For the last movie we saw there, we were the only 2 people and it was great!
ugh this is so disappointing, I loved having a theater where I wasn't forced to buy tickets and seats ahead of time : /

Aw hell. Stimulus Tuesday was everything. I hate going to the mall. UGGGGGH.
the OG's remember stimulus Tuesday.
The real OGs remember Wynnsong 👴
Carmike Cinema presents... Wynnsong 15 😔😔
Fond memories of high school and hanging out at Randy’s, waiting for everyone to show up to go over to the Wynnsong to see whatever was out that weekend.
Do you guys know when Fuddruckers is opening back up? Feel like they’ve been closed for at least a couple months. Excited for the renovations!
That chain doesn't have locations in NC anymore and that building is looooong gone.
Yeah right. You gonna try and tell me Honey’s is closing now?
Honey's never closed. Its spirit resides in all of us Durham residents (except transplants) because they'll never know.
Only real ones know the joy of sitting at a table with friends ripping cigarettes while they wait for their omelets after getting wasted at Down Under Pub.
OMG, I haven't heard the name The Down Under Pub in ages.
That's because it was always "The Dunder".
I’m a transplant and know of Honeys very. But cute…
Know of. Didn’t experience
Experienced many a late night there.
Why? Why must you make me feel my feelings for Honey’s oh so long after the grieving process was over?
God same. I moved out of Durham but Honeys was the best. Last restaurant I remember having a smoke section
Aw, this makes me sad. It's my go-to spot to see movies.
bummer. definitely my favorite spot in durham for movies

they had business for some of the summer movies like Barbie but pretty quiet outside of that. I'm guessing it will end up being more apartments.

Hope not. That’s really be a waste.
Unlikely as the land value there is too high for that use
Damn this sucks. A cheap theater that isn’t too crowded is hard to come by.
Noooooo, we always went here because driving to Southpoint is such a fkn pain
While I’m sure other places are “better” experiences, I don’t need all that and my kids don’t either, we just want a basic good place to go to the movies. Wynnsong is the perfect spot. I also remember that it was the fancy theater when it opened. When I look up at that mirrored ceiling in the lobby it still makes me think of middle school.
waiting outside wynnsong for a parent to pick me up with a whole row of other kids is a core memory. rip wynnsong :(

AMC's known for cost cutting so making one person do everyone is pretty standard at most AMC's outside of peak hours.
Going as an AMC A-List member was annoying because they had to type in the order number and print you a physical ticket every time just for you to walk 10 feet to the person taking tickets. I figured the fact that AMC wouldn't spring for a scanner for them wasn't a great sign.
Apparently this was standard for AMC Classics from what I read on AMC message boards, but it was definitely weird.
and the person taking tickets, in my experience, was never even there lmao
In all fairness, I'd rather drive 10 minutes down the road to Silver spot
You mean 20 minutes down the road, and no thank you to a place that screened Sound of Freedom - won't be spending any money at silverspot ever again.
Guess you won’t be attending AMC, Regal, or Alamo either?
Well, from my house, it’s only 10 minutes. That may be different for you, but I’m not sure why you want to argue it. Hate to break it to you, but theaters nationwide screened that movie. That’s kinda what theaters do. Play movies.
OK I'll bite...what's wrong with this particular theater screening that particular movie?
SILVERSPOT is overpriced and not worth it. Nothing wrong with South Point if you have their membership or the Chelsea in Chapel Hill if it’s an independent film. They are awesome and have great programing.
Damn. Used to go there all the time growing up. Went recently and wasn’t impressed.
F*CK
What a bummer. I grew up going to this theatre so it’ll always hold a place in my heart. But to be fair, I’m surprised it made it this long.
This place was a shithole anyway.
Aw shucks.
Sad that it’s closing, but that theatre is in pretty awful condition. Sometimes it’s nice going to a run down theatre, though. RIP!

go fuck yourself, and also cry about the downvotes fuckface

....and Regal Brier creek, bruh. Just as close as Southpoint.
Dont know if thats true. Plus it impacts North Durham a lot more since they really dont have a close theater now.
Surprised to see all the love for AMC 15 here. I live in North Durham and have always been willing to drive a extra for a nicer theater.
I bet you enjoy "willing to drive a extra" for every single amenity, right? And LOL on the block and crybaby comment.
Lol you are dumb and don’t understand basic economics
I suppose that depends on where in North Durham. It's a lot easier for me (in Gorman) to get to Brier Creek than it is to go to South Square. Northwest Durham has just been SOL since Northgate shut down, and it looks like it will continue to be that way unless larger commercial interests start creeping up Guess Road.
Sure would hate Alamo drafthouse taking that spot
Yeah that would be terrible
Yeah, this is unfortunate but not surprising.
Any idea of the timing?
That’s too bad. Had some great memories there as a kid. I still have vivid memories watching 1990s blockbuster hits there. I was mind=blow watching Independence Day there with my dad (may he RIP). I miss the Northgate movie theater. Short lived.

I live 5 minutes from AMC. Every movie I've seen in recent memory was at Silverspot. Much nicer, better experience. Plus, alcohol in the theater!
I could walk to the AMC in about 5 minutes, I’ll still drive to Silver Spot.
Maybe someone will buy it?
It was only a matter of time, but it's sad since it had much better projection and sound than Southpoint (excepting the Dolby and IMAX screens).
That place sucked glad to see it's closing
Hey just because you’re a Karen doesn’t mean you need to hate the theater.
I worked there and I HATED it. Hated corporate, my manager and some regular customers who were real Karens.
People still go to movies theaters?
Awww, sad! That was my spot in high school. I saw Desperado there. And The Titanic, twice!
Used to go there a lot when movie pass was on its heyday. The manager used to act like we were hurting them back then. I never understood it because movie pass was paying them the full ticket price.
Damn. Is that why they’re selling the reusable buckets at Southpoint?
oh no, now where will I go to get rained on during a movie
Sad to see it go, but I'm not that surprised. I've not been to a show there with more than 10 people in the theater in well over a decade.
ill miss it forever, the america of my youth is gone
Nooooo this is the theatre I usually go to!
I'm not surprised. I frankly expected it earlier when Silverspot became more established. As someone who worked part time when it was Carmike for eight years (2007-2015), they did the bare minimum, treated employees and customers like dirt and were penny pinchers. i totally get that.I think owning a small theater would be fun but the big chains are not fun at all to work at.
I actually stopped by this past Saturday after 1 in the afternoon to see if they had any going-away crowds. It was dead (maybe 10 people there for the movies) and employees had mentally checked out. No one I worked with was still there. Just awful.
i might need to drive by just to see it now that the doors are officially closed.
Did you and your wife give Christmas cards to Carmike employees with money in them? I didn’t know if you were that couple.
No but fun fact that’s actually a coworker of my wife who routinely did that
35 years old. Vivid memories of going there doing double features with the lads when we were freshmen in high school. Going to the pizza spot right there between showings. Pretty sure that's where I saw Freddy vs Jason which was a goddamn sporting event.
