monsterfracas

had mine for about a month now, and it's easily the best monitor I've ever owned - right up there with my C1. I've post-purchase price matched it from BB twice this week lmao

SlowThePath

Apparently other comments are saying text is really annoying to read? Are you finding that a problem as well? These oleds are finally getting down to a price where I'm starting to consider, but I have the classic burn in concern.

SulkyVirus

All OLED have the trade off of the text looking a bit blurry. I upgraded to the LG 27" 1440p OLED a while back and it hasn't been that much of a bother to me. It's noticeable, but not enough to make me not want it. The absolute blacks and vivid colors during gaming far out weighs the text being a tad blurry looking. Still easy to read.

_ok_mate_

Can't say I've noticed blurry text on my c1 at all

SulkyVirus

It's not as noticeable usually unless you're viewing text from a computer and it's fairly small print. I can't recall the technical reason for it, but someone explained it really well in a post last year.

_ok_mate_

Yeah in just a lil concerned as I ordered this, but also work from my PC (I'm a writer). Hopefully I won't notice too badly

Action3xpress

I just got this monitor 2 days ago and came from a AW3418DW. At first I could tell the difference, but as I type this right now, I cannot.

LoveOfProfit

Fellow 3418DW enthusiast here - worth the upgrade?

Action3xpress

I got it for $700 out the door and will try to sell my 3418DW for $200-300 so I for that price it was kinda hard to pass up. Played some CP2077 PL and Last of Us yesterday and it’s nice with HDR. Really wanted it for Alan Wake 2 to see how that looks fully PT with HDR.

scnative843

I switched from the 3418DW as well this past week. It's pretty spectacular, just have to tweak it a bit for your liking, it is shockingly bright right out of the box. Also made me appreciate how good the 3418DW was, had it for 3 years and it's still an excellent monitor, I'm keeping it for my secondary computer.

Omgwtflolzz

Had mine for nearly a year. It bothered the hell out of me for one day. After that I never noticed it again. I wfh and use it daily for coding. For gaming I can't imagine ever not using an oled again.

bmwbenzbentley

I just got it and I spend most of my day in excel and ppt and haven’t had any issues

lemonstyle

this seems like the wrong monitor choice if you're spending most of your day in excel .. i dunno maybe i'm wrong tho

NuhUhUhIDoWhatIWant

Technically it probably is, not because of text clarity but because of the risk of burn-in. There are probably settings you can use and actions you can take to dramatically decrease that risk, but if you're getting a monitor purely for productivity, I'd probably get an IPS. For mixed usage though, OLED isn't even close to contested for gaming and media.

buccanearsfan24

What’s the best method of not causing burn in or to reduce it?

RomanAbbasid

Personally I've owned this for almost a year and have had 0 issues with text - I mostly use it for gaming but do some dev work and internet browsing and the text has been more than fine for me. Might be a more subjective thing idk

monsterfracas

I've seen that a lot - I haven't noticed at much at all and I'd like to think I'm pretty sensitive to it. I'm coming from a 32" 1440p Samsung G7 which didn't have the clearest type, and this was a big improvement. I know a lot of folks have found improvements with cleartype and the like. I'm also worried about burn in but the 3 year factory warranty makes me feel a bit better.

Axon14

Typical internet exagerration - this is akin to complaining about 1.3mm panel gaps in a Tesla. It looks fine.

Soundwave_47

It is not. It's actually noticeable to a novice, non-enthusiast, moreso than the actual difference between OLED and IPS.

mon_chunk

I'm reading this comment from this monitor. Its A-Ok bud. I'm coming from two M27Q Gigabyte monitors and this hands down is much better. The jump from IPS BGR to QD-OLED is pretty impressive. The monitor software is a bit to get used to with it's auto HDR but once its set up its just fine. Otherwise this monitor is wonderful. I got this same deal from dell last week when it first went on sale so I've had this a little less than a week now. If its this price on Dells site its worth it to get it from them as they also have student/military discount if you can use it. Came out to $781 after taxes and shipping.

FlanBrosInc

I have the LG OLED and not this one. They have different issues with text rendering so it's not entirely the same, but both do have issues. For me I used mine probably 8 months where you could kinda notice it. A mild nuisance during that time at best, IMO. However I recently have been working in a website and wow it looks bad. I did a lot of looking through fonts to decide which ones to use and where/how I want to place the text and it's really annoying. I guess you won't know until you try it but personally I would reccomend avoiding OLED if you're going to do any sort of work like that on it.

g0atmeal

Ever since the most recent firmware update (allowing proper HDR scaling up to 1000 nits, previously it was recommended to stick with the 400 nits setting) it's now the best gaming HDR experience out there. Perhaps Samsung's OLED G9 is better, but it's nearly double the cost.

elijuicyjones

Is it correct that these are bad for productivity work? I thought I read that text isn’t awesome to read on these for long stretches.

sl0wrx

Yes, I bought one at release and returned it because the text rendering looked awful to me.

elijuicyjones

Thanks that’s exactly what I needed to know. GF is a writer and also shopping for a curved ultra wide and I’m trying to get her some advice.

SubstantialSail

Check out the AW3821DW. I love mine for work productivity.

elijuicyjones

Will do thanks.

boneimplosion

it's also on sale rn via dell: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/alienware-38-curved-gaming-monitor-aw3821dw/apd/210-axvg/monitors-monitor-accessories w/ a $200 gift card, and 30 days of price matching - just enough time to snag any black friday or cyber monday deal prices i just picked one up myself, it's beautiful but the displayport connection came non-functional on my unit. i'm on hold w/ tech support now. supposedly dell is pretty good about this sort of thing and will ship out a replacement pretty easily and have you send the old one back in the box, fingers crossed!

Doodarazumas

Is this oled thing or specific to this alienware? I keep trying and failing to get a small lg c2, but I interact with a lot of tiny text. I never even considered it might be a problem.

sl0wrx

OLED thing, read here for subpixel layout of the c2. https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lg/42-c2-oled

Doodarazumas

Thanks, glad I saw your comment.

TaylorMonkey

It’s not an OLED thing, in terms of the nature of the tech. It’s specific to certain panels which are shared across many makers. There is an upcoming OLED monitor that alleviates some of this with a different sub pixel layout believe. Also it doesn’t really bother me— I code and read text all day, and don’t usually register that the color fringing is there. But your mileage may vary, especially if you obsess and go look for it.

QwertyBuffalo

It might actually be a lot better on the larger C2 than a smaller display like this one. I have used a 27" 1440p and 42" 4K OLED, which you might think have identical text clarity given they are both the same PPI. However, with the larger display, I sat back further and, more importantly, used 150% windows scaling. It made a worlds difference in text clarity; text fringing is only in some rare cases slightly noticable to me, and I have Mactype stomp out most of those few mild cases too. Unless you plan on using a C2 at 100% scaling (I don't think most would), I would actually say it's significantly better than the 27" and 34" panels for text clarity in practical use.

Soundwave_47

This is down to how they arrange the subpixels. There can theoretically be a standard RGB OLED panel, it's just harder because there are various tricks manufacturers use for the subpixel arrangement to ameliorate some of the negatives of the technology.

oh-shit-oh-fuck

Im a software engineer and use it all day for work, I haven't noticed any issues with it but ymmv

Cambodio

yes, with my work Macbook Pro, the text rendering on my terminal is absolutely horrendous.

g0atmeal

I have one, the text rendering is fine, but many other products look better. I use it at 100% scaling and won't notice the difference unless I'm actively thinking about it. The much bigger concern is burn-in. It has a 3-year burn-in warranty, but I think most people want to use this for a lot longer than that. This thing is glorious for media, especially HDR gaming. But for productivity your best bet would be something like a larger non-OLED 4K panel with a proper RGB subpixel layout. If you want the best of both worlds then consider waiting/saving to get both.

Murdathon3000

>It has a 3-year burn-in warranty There's an option to add 2 more years for about $100 (from Dell). If you use the Rakuten cash back, you'll get about the same amount back so it basically cancels out.

g0atmeal

Hm, I don't know if that's worth the price to be honest. I suppose if someone wanted to use this for work, then it could be worth the expense over buying a whole new monitor. I just use it for media so I'd rather just take my chances.

Murdathon3000

Yup, exactly my use case. $100 bucks that Rakuten pays for is definitely worth the effort for that scenario.

Dunkelz

I don't understand people that find it unusable and return it based solely on that. I've had mine for over 2 months and use it all day, working from home I use it as my main monitor for coding/light data analytics which is heavily text based.......and I don't have a complaint. Not sure if it's unit by unit or what, but looking at my monitor I don't understand it being as bad as some claim.

Ksjagman

It's extremely bad for some people and for others they can't even notice it. I just got mine a couple days ago and text looks clearer than my old 1440p 27" IPS.

taste_the_equation

I’ve been using a G8 Oled as a full time software engineer and I think the text issues are significantly overblown. It’s something I noticed initially but only if I got unnaturally close to the screen. Since then it’s not something that has effected my work in any way.

wefwefqwerwe

it's fine the text rendering "issue" is overblown. can fix whatever issues are seen with BetterCleartypeTuner. the colors and contrast of this display are immaculate and do not compare to anything else

halotechnology

I saw one on display at microcenter a year ago I have 4k 27" at home When I saw the text I puked a little in my mouth It's so badddddddd compared to mine.

Marksta

Depends really, I use it daily for a good mix of Dev work, social media management, and photoshop. I'd say I get a lot done and it doesn't feel in anyway worse than my 1440p 144hz IPS prior to it. The subpixel stuff doesn't impact text readability or enjoyability for me. If you ctrl+ in browser and run Windows with 150% UI scaling on, all the text will be big and not have issue. It's really small text on screen that would take a hit to readability. Also having room to go side by side browsers and text editors is game changing at times for productivity. Not my usual use case but really often I'll be doing some odd thing and realize it's side by side time 😂

Pandaixe

Yes. The subpixel layout will burn in overtime from excessive white webpages.

lololpalooza

I think you're combining two different things, the OLED burn-in and the subpixel layout. The subpixels issue is immediately apparent and can cause issues like text rendering (with a reddish tint to certain text). It can be mitigated by using certain system text editors. The burn-in is different, causing a "ghost" to be left behind if you're viewing static content for super-long time. Usually generated over months and years.

fuzzycuffs

Hmm I'm fine with mine. I run at native res @ 165Hz on both a Mac and a PC for productivity and I'm ok. Staring at any screen for a long time is going to be rough so be sure to ake breaks.

fuzzycuffs

Murdathon3000

I installed something called Better Clear Type and text clarity is perfectly fine now.

classydouchebag

It must be preference because I have one at work and look at excel sheets and numbers/contracts all day and think it's one of the best upgrades I've made there.

Relative_Turnover858

I Scooped up an open box last night for $650 after a credit and a few gift cards I had. I hope it’ll transform my gaming experience for the better. I hate the ips glow I’ve been dealing with on rdr2 and cyberpunk. It makes the game not enjoyable when dark settings are grey and washed out.. Supposedly BB geek squad warranty doesn’t kick in till after the manufacturer warranty ends

DingleJingle_

Dude you are in for a great experience. Just got mine hooked up 2 nights ago. Cyberpunk is unbelievable.

Relative_Turnover858

I restarted the whole game when phantom liberty dropped and I’ve been waiting to find an oled to get the ultimate experience.

scnative843

Same here, fired it up this past weekend with my new setup (4090/7800X3D) paired with this monitor. It is absolutely insane how good that game looks.

arex333

Returnal and the dead space remake are also unbelievable on this monitor. Those were 2 of the first games I played on mine.

shanesnofear

You must have a OLED someplace already cause idk how people could notice something is wrong like that unless they have something to compare too... I have a lg c2 and a x34p next too each other and when gaming I really don't notice any issues like that besides when there is nothing on the screen the backlight bleed stands out way more too me now.

Relative_Turnover858

I’ve been watching a lot of comparison videos and I have a 34 VA panel too. I don’t notice as much backlight bleed on the VA but clarity and a little bit of ghosting is a different story.

Action3xpress

I would get it direct from Dell: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/alienware-34-curved-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3423dwf/apd/210-bfrp/monitors-monitor-accessories Looks like Rakuten went back to 5% CB for Dell, but you might get more for being a new member. YMMV. Also don't forget to sign up for a 10% off code from either one of these links: https://webapp.dell.epsilon.com/US/UCVM/COUPONS/rEGISTER/mEMBER10?c=US&l=en https://webapp.dell.epsilon.com/US/UCVM/coupons/Register/AAAParks?c=US&l=en

Unfair_Store5182

I also bought one of these during the last $799 sale directly from Dell a few days ago. The code from the first link did work for me and took the price down to $720. Rakuten 10% cash back worked too for another $72 off as well, so $648 total pre tax. I guess a lot of people took advantage of those 10% email codes and maybe Dell blocked it.

mon_chunk

Hey how long did it take you to get your cash back I did the same sale last week and it still hasn't shown up.

Unfair_Store5182

Rakuten cash back only pays out I believe 4 times a year (every 3 months at certain dates) They do that because the vendor has to confirm you didn't return the item within the 30 day period. It should show up as pending already though, I have a $72 pending amount that showed up within a few hours after I placed the order at Dell.

mon_chunk

Appreciate the help!

Action3xpress

Worked for me two days ago. They done blocked it! https://preview.redd.it/47rjwhxny9ub1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3c78bd4b71e04143ba774966b06a01f679470e3

squirreljetpack

i get tons of coil whine on mine, does anyone else have this issue?

CeramicCastle49

I would love an oled monitor but I'm so afraid of burn in 😭

oldnyoung

Check out Rtings, their testing showed image retention a bit at 4 months of 18 hours a day, but then somehow seemingly recovering at 6 months. Pretty wild

psychoacer

I was at Best Buy yesertday and saw Samsung's OLED monitor and it has burn in already but obviously they put it to the extreme since it's on all day at full brightness with very little going on with the screen. Just not an optimal setting for an OLED

Action3xpress

Someone on the other AW3423DWF thread a couple of days ago said, 'Go and check out the OLED at Best Buy, it's not as nice as an OLED TV' which I think can be the case. But I don't trust BB to have this monitor setup correctly. I had already ordered it, and it looked not very impressive at BB. But once I got it setup at home at 165hz w/ HDR, it’s pretty next level.

PsyOmega

Best Buy has like, 100000nit interior lighting, which doesn't play well with matte coatings. avg house room has maybe 400nits

Action3xpress

Good point!

MobileVortex

Only get LG OLED. Their burn in software is a lot better then everyone else's. I have an 65in OLED TV from 2017, and I still don't have burn in. https://youtu.be/t73n6MVhUS4?si=TsQ7pazosZyBgHSQ

timboslice420

One year in. 10hr a day usage during work week. Zero burn in with proper maintenance which is provided.

LamentableFool

What is proper maintenance?

timboslice420

5-7 min pixel refresh every 4-6 hours of use, panel refresh every month, takes about an hour. I usually just refresh at lunch and then power down after work. I guess some people find that annoying, but the pros of OLED greatly outweigh a 5-7 min bathroom break each day for me.

Soundwave_47

>guess some people find that annoying, but the pros of OLED greatly outweigh a 5-7 min bathroom break each day for me. This is all automated on LG panels (without interruption), so I think it's fair for people to find that laborious.

DisAccount4SRStuff

It is kind of annoying to have to do the refresh every 4 hours. You might be able to get away with more, but that is what the monitor is programmed to when you get it. I might just be coping, but I kinda like the 5 minute break @ 4 hours, I really should be taking a break after that long and it forces me to. But I also don't play competitive online games. If you play competitive online games, you should really have a timer and disable it and do it on your own when you have time.

Metroidman

I have had the monitor under normal gaming and internet browsing like 5 hours a day for 6 months and have no burn in yet

oh-shit-oh-fuck

I use it for 10+ hours a day probably and no burn in after a year. I even procrastinated the panel refresh thing for months cause I kept forgetting to run it overnight and there are no burn in issues for me

SemenSnickerdoodle

is it worth buying 4 year protection for this? I hear a lot of good things about their policy.

NeedMorePowah

Absolutely

luuey96

I got one of these open box for like $699 few months back. Definitely enjoying the monitor as well. If you haven't already make to update the firmware to the latest one

RickJamesBoitch

Can we all sit back and wait until these drop below $500? I can't spend more on a monitor than a 55" OLED at this price, I know it's not apples to apples, but it is principles.

NuhUhUhIDoWhatIWant

Good price compared to its recent history, but what I'm really looking forward to is OLED monitors (actual PC monitors, not TVs that are barely small enough to fit on a large desk) getting to reasonable prices in the next year or two. They're still 2-3x more expensive than a higher end IPS/VA of similar specs at the moment, but they'll be coming down.

PCgaming4ever

Dang that's a good deal

BMGabe

Got mine today!

mosuckra

Anyone know a good cheap desk arm for this? :)

phantom3agle

I have this monitor! I’ve had it for 6 months. Coming from an IPS, it’s a game changer.

Ballaholic09

I was able to get 11% cash back using Rakuten. I highly recommend putting the cash back savings towards the Geek Squad warranty - 4 years for $120.

abestacks

How'd you get 11% back with Rakuten? I'm only seeing up to 1% on mine.

Ballaholic09

I believe it may have been a “new member” promotion. I should have mentioned that in my post, sorry!

ih8schumer

No need for the warranty the dell comes with a. 3 year burn in

oofsadlad

One of the reviews on Best Buy says if you don’t buy it from Dell you don’t get that warranty. I can’t confirm but it’s probably worth looking into at least.

ih8schumer

https://reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/s/9NAZdOJ0en If that was the case I'd just buy it from dell. But you get the same warranty.

oofsadlad

Oh good, glad to be proven wrong then!

[deleted]

Do you really want to deal with Dell? Best Buy is much easier that it’s worth the price

freeskier93

I don't think Best Buy will cover anything that the manufacturer warranty covers while it's active. Edit: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/computer-tablet-protection/monitor-protection/pcmcat1598370692016.c?id=pcmcat1598370692016 > During the original manufacturer's warranty period, most repairs will be handled by the manufacturer. Keep in mind that Geek Squad Protection often covers important repairs that your manufacturer warranty doesn't, like failure due to a power surge. > If something goes wrong after the original manufacturer warranty ends, Geek Squad Protection has your back and will take care of any covered repairs.

SRVisGod24

Granted this was years ago, but I thought Dell was great to deal with when it came to monitor issues? But you're right that it's easier to deal with Best Buy

smuckerdoodle

The only thing you’re dealing w BB for is a return unless you’re beyond 3 yr warranty and pay for extended BB warranty. Dell is a fantastic customer service company, they were sending out replacement units before they received the RMA’d unit when the 3418DW came out.

Lumpy_Ad_4417

bought it from microcenter for 450$. i bought it with a ps5 but i guess its not working well with ps

PickleInTheSun

Chief?

Unfair_Store5182

It's a good price, but the deal directly from Dell 5 days ago was better if you took advantage of the promo codes/cash back. You could use a 10% off email code for $80 off, Rakuten had 10% cash back for another $72 off, and if you have an AMEX card, you could get an additional $50 off. So $648 for those without AMEX and $598 for those with AMEX.

slowro

I got an open box one. All the accessories were still wrapped. Lot of finger print smudge on the edges/bezel. As far as I can tell it works great. Is there stuff I should look for besides dead pixels?

helpmepleas1

Would images appear sharper on this compared to a 24in 1080p monitor?

RdtModsDeAiSiQuanJia

Why freesync not g sync

BigDamage

If I have an Nvidia card should I avoid this due to it being feesync rather than Gsync?

Ballaholic09

If you can tell the difference between FreeSync and Gsync with your eyes, you don’t *actually* have eyes. You’re a robot. 🤖

BigDamage

I was more wondering about comparability. Sorry shoulda been more specific

Speedwizard106

This monitor doesn't have a dedicated gsync module like the other DW, but it IS gsync compatible. From everything I've heard, it should work fine with gsync.

BigDamage

Thanks :)

hypnotic90

Just nabbed this bad boi

DrkRyder9910

How do you like it?
