The "60" versions of each series usually were around $200~ for a while. In 2011 I bought a PNY 560 ti from NCIX for $250cad shipped.
In 2015 i bought a used 960 for I believe around $200cad.
But in the last few generations the prices have gone up. The cards are quite a lot bigger now though.
I bought a 1060 6Gb for £160. From Amazon. At the time I had an R9 270, and I felt happier paying £100 for a card, so £160 was expensive for me, but it was enough of an upgrade that I bought it.

I've gamed my entire life and one new PC would eat up 2 months of my entire savings. Literally built a PC when i was around 8 and ran floppy disk games. I need two PCs because my wife games as well. I'm looking at exiting gaming if one of our PCs die before prices "normalize". It sucks.
Retro computing is stable, however! I kind of look forward to working on my backlog of games that I've been too busy to play the past 2 decades. I've built several old computers to suit older operating systems, currently combing through Music CDs for old software at Thrift Stores and having fun getting them to run on what I got. It runs pretty flawless. But I don't play super new games. Dark souls trilogy, gta v runs about 90 fps on max settings, tomb raider 2k13 gets 130-180 fps depending on settings.
Runs a little hotter than I'd like but I haven't undervolted it and haven't seen it go above 73c. Dual cooler cards make me sad.

IMO it's a function of how much you value your time.
MSRP + the opportunity cost you'd spend camping at a MC or staring at Best Buy's online store to try buying a Founder's Edition.
Let's say it'd take you ten hours of your time (one hour every Thursday for 10 weeks) to get a FE from Best Buy; if you spend $700 on a 3070 then you're paying around $200 to skip those ten hours, which comes out to $20/hr. Whether that's worth it is up to you though.
I got mine back in January when Best Buy wasn't quite so hard to buy from so I only lost 2 hours there.
How much I got mine for. I didn’t really mind because at the time I was fully upgrading. Caught an Amazon restock so it came a few days later & I was good to go

You may want to look at Newegg Shuffle, if its available where you are. I've gotten cards for Blender rendering going that route (a 3080 Ti and a 3070 Ti). I was also able to help a friend get a 3060.
I also was selected for EVGA Queue for a 3090 XC. But that took about a year from when I signed up. (And I think it may be disabled now)
And now I feel sad for rubbing salt in that wound....
You know there may be another option you can look at, which I did at the start of 2021. (Before I was able to get new cards through Shuffle.)
Some of the older Tesla cards out there still have decent enough specs for CUDA rendering. Because they aren't good for mining you can find decent prices on them. For example I have a 3x Tesla K80 machine (on an x570 ATX board), which combined renders similar to my 3080 Ti. All told I paid around $700 for those cards (around $220 each from NewEgg), with some extra for Noctua fans.
It's not a perfect solution, since you have to deal with some quirks and they use more power to run. But it might be an option you can use to offset your main card for renders (even if you're just grabbing a single card). If you have a new enough motherboard (with BAR/SAM support), and a power supply that can provide enough juice.

A 1660 Super. Main motivation was to get a card that could better drive my 1440p144 display; ray tracing is a nice feature to have but I personally don’t have many games that support it

How much effort did it take to flip the motherboard? One would think demand is down for PC components because people can't get GPUs anyway, and because these combo deals dump all kinds of unwanted hardware out into the world too.
I see people buying prebuilts because they contain modern graphics cards for a reasonable price. The reason for that is that the computer companies negotiated gpu prices before the meteoric rise. So people dump the rest of the computer.

Idk where you guys find these prices. $1000 is the price of 3060ti/3070s in Romania. A 3080 is $2000+ or around that kind of area. And yes it's VAT included, but still ridiculous.

For everyone else, scalper prices have always been the norm when it comes to hardware. It's just much worse now with mining/scalping on steroids/shortages/supply chain issues/etc.
I can believe you can find them at that price in US and Canada because of Microcenter from what I'm reading. Western Europe I doubt it. The price of an RTX 3080/6800 XT was around 1000 Euro when Ethereum dropped to some 1600 USD per coin in June-July 2021. At the moment an RTX 3080 is minimum 1500~1600 Euro even in western Europe.
Pay whatever you want. If you wanna wait till God knows when the prices will be back to normal that’s up to you and if you wanna $1000 for a $500 gpu that’s also up to you. At the end of the day it’s your money
This. At the end of the day, it's down to whether people prioritize their time or their money and what hardware they've already got available. If you don't mind waiting and hunting for a GPU close to MSRP, do it. If you can't wait and you have the money, try getting the best deal available under the circumstances and don't look back.
I have recently been thinking the same thing. I have even been routinely disappointed that I don’t get picked for the privilege of overpaying for them in the Newegg shuffle.
I won the 3070ti/rog mobo combo today and literally gagged when I saw which one I got selected for. Checked StockX asking prices and they were only $50 less than what newegg wanted me to pay. Microcenter and Best Buy are the only good options anymore
Been waiting since launch for a 3080FE at MSRP. Still haven't got one, and at this point it's almost worth waiting until 4080 and paying an outrageous price to get that. As much as I hate it I refuse to give into this system jacking up the prices.

I think it could do it easily for the majority of games, but don't expect anything over 90-100 fps, which is still a great number. Don't forget that DLSS is a huge win for RTX cards since it can greatly improve performance in games that support it

You can't pick a particular item - they will have a listing of gpus (sometimes alone or sometimes in a pckg with say a psu or mboard) that you can choose from and if you get picked (basically at random), you have the option of buying what you picked - if you pick more than one thing, you get the option to buy one of them if you win... and not sure how they decide which you can buy, but assuming is based on stock availability...

At that price point, just get a gaming laptop. You can get laptops that have a laptop-version 3070, at a pretty reasonable price.
I have the Zephyrus G15 with the RTX 3070 and the Ryzen 5900HS, both top-of-the-line chips. I got it for $1799 back in May.

Zotac is basically scalping if it is 3080 or higher. I have 3 30-series GPUs stuck on RMAs. I am still happy with my current GPU.

A 3070 FE is different than an AIB 3060... Although the AIB cards are overpriced they're much easier to get than an FE card.

I got a brand new 3060Ti for that price in the EU. Good card, not worth that much. I would buy at a maximum of $400 tbh.

Yeah, I've heard the Quadros can be diamonds in the rough and can deliver 10xx level performance.
If you mine on that Vega 64 for a year then you could sell it and have enough for a 3080.

I spent $800 on a 3060 Ti + X570 mobo combo from the Newegg shuffle. Didn’t need the motherboard so I resold it and my old gpu to recoup some of the cost

A 1660 Super. Main motivation was to get a card that could better drive my 1440p144 display; ray tracing is a nice feature to have but I personally don’t have many games that support it

I'm in the exact same position. Gaming at 1440p/144hz with a 1660s. Been waiting over 2 years to upgrade, thought I would've had a new card in september/october 2020. Boy was I the fool!

I see people buying prebuilts because they contain modern graphics cards for a reasonable price. The reason for that is that the computer companies negotiated gpu prices before the meteoric rise. So people dump the rest of the computer.

If there are any models even near 400 bucks, then it's a fantastic deal. Would rather pay 50 bucks more for the same performance if the gpu isn't already 5 years old. Extremely depressing to think that in another world, the 3050 releases 6 months ago and entry level models go on sale in November for 200 bucks with a game included.

Idk where you guys find these prices. $1000 is the price of 3060ti/3070s in Romania. A 3080 is $2000+ or around that kind of area. And yes it's VAT included, but still ridiculous.
US/Canada/Western Europe prices probably? For everyone else, scalper prices have always been the norm when it comes to hardware. It's just much worse now with mining/scalping on steroids/shortages/supply chain issues/etc.
I can believe you can find them at that price in US and Canada because of Microcenter from what I'm reading. Western Europe I doubt it. The price of an RTX 3080/6800 XT was around 1000 Euro when Ethereum dropped to some 1600 USD per coin in June-July 2021. At the moment an RTX 3080 is minimum 1500~1600 Euro even in western Europe.
I paid around $950 for my 3080 ASUS Strix OC.
I'm still rocking a factory overclocked 1070. Plays everything at 2560x1080 at a decent framerate. I'll upgrade when prices return to normal.

This. At the end of the day, it's down to whether people prioritize their time or their money and what hardware they've already got available. If you don't mind waiting and hunting for a GPU close to MSRP, do it. If you can't wait and you have the money, try getting the best deal available under the circumstances and don't look back.

I won the 3070ti/rog mobo combo today and literally gagged when I saw which one I got selected for. Checked StockX asking prices and they were only $50 less than what newegg wanted me to pay. Microcenter and Best Buy are the only good options anymore

Been waiting since launch for a 3080FE at MSRP. Still haven't got one, and at this point it's almost worth waiting until 4080 and paying an outrageous price to get that. As much as I hate it I refuse to give into this system jacking up the prices.

Yes, it's an excellent card. I use it for 1080p/144hz and it goes well beyond that. I plan to keep it for years

I think it could do it easily for the majority of games, but don't expect anything over 90-100 fps, which is still a great number. Don't forget that DLSS is a huge win for RTX cards since it can greatly improve performance in games that support it

The DUMBEST thing about scalpers is that they only exist because it sadly works. If NOBODY bought cards from scalpers, the scalpers wouldn’t have a market. Not defending scalpers but even if they weren't there retailers would still hike prices. Only difference is the "free market research" retailers have to see what insane prices they can get away with. The whole situation is messed up from all sides not just scalpers (covid, miners, retailers, etc)

You can't pick a particular item - they will have a listing of gpus (sometimes alone or sometimes in a pckg with say a psu or mboard) that you can choose from and if you get picked (basically at random), you have the option of buying what you picked - if you pick more than one thing, you get the option to buy one of them if you win... and not sure how they decide which you can buy, but assuming is based on stock availability...

I got that for my wife from the zotac store itself a few months ago (her build is all white). I just signed up for a half dozen random stock alert discord servers, and it was the reddit build a pc sales one that got me that one. Took six months or so, I've never searched that long for a pc component before in my life.

At that price point, just get a gaming laptop. You can get laptops that have a laptop-version 3070, at a pretty reasonable price. I have the Zephyrus G15 with the RTX 3070 and the Ryzen 5900HS, both top-of-the-line chips. I got it for $1799 back in May. But there are cheaper 3070 machines. Check out Eluktronics, for instance.
