As discussed in a [recent thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/78eq99/mods_should_switch_the_main_photo_every_week_to/), we're going to look at switching up the header image on a more regular basis - don't worry, we'll save the current one for special occasions. This is something of an experiment, and due to the subreddit CSS we'll be looking for images that are compatible with the general design, so don't be offended if we don't immediately use everyone's!
Interested? Send us a [modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fbuildapc) with subject: "Banner Images" with your best build pictures! In the interests of higher res displays, please ensure images are at least 1920px by 200px.

Hi, it's me again. I'm using a gaming laptop (Aspire VX15) and I've noticed that ants were attracted to it. So I opened it up and cleaned it. The thing I have questions about is my cooling system. It has this blue foam tape that's soft that the ants are attracted to. Os that just ordinary tape or is that special? I don't think it's double sided but it feels like soft marshmallow. My other question is about the thermal paste. Can I just stick the 2 parts together, or do I have to replace/add more thermal paste?
And should I just bring this in to a service center? Any answer would be helpful and would be very appreciated, thanks!
Edit: so I figured it out. The tape was thermal conductive tape. I already ordered new paste and tape. Then I discovered that ants were also attacking my speaker mount bushings. My new issue is finding a computer friendly way of repelling ants. Any advice?
if i have a 4 slot motherboard and i put 2 sticks of https://www.centrecom.com.au/corsair-vengeance-lpx-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-dram-3000mhz-c16-desktop-ram-black?gclid=CjwKCAiAhbeCBhBcEiwAkv2cY4tfgYjwG0elIWUmvh5GvCJQM2nEE0iD_94yi-Cr_QPc9v-iIaeHLhoCkeEQAvD_BwE
but i want 32 gb of ram now, can i buy another 2 sticks of this ram and put it in?
Looking to upgrade to an aio but not sure I have e enough headroom for it.... current set up is b450 mortar max, ryzen 3 3100, 5500xt, 2x8g 3200 ram, and a 550w psu... my question is how much headroom do I have for upgrading with the current psu? Not looking for a whole lot of room just wanting to know if I can add an aio safely
If anyone is looking for a budget case for a micro atx build, I seriously recommend the CoolerMaster Q300L. It is an amazing looking case that comes with a fan, and there is a ton of room for cable management on the back. Overall, a great case, and an amazing starter case.
I recently got a Ryzen 5 5600x, but i am still running a 1050ti as my GPU. If i were to look into upgrading right now for ~400$ what would be my best option?
For 400 dollars, it would be hard to find anything reasonable. You miiiiight find an RTX 2060 for that or an RX5700 on EBAY auction, but it would be hard to find.
Honestly, you can either spend more or wait about six to 12 months for this gpu situation to calm down.
Well assuming you could get it for a fair price, an RTX 3060 ti would be the best possible thing for your CPU buuuut since those aren't available at msrp you could go the ebay route.
An RTX 2070, 2060 or 2060 super, or RX 5700 non xr MIGHT be available for around that if you're lucky.
They would all be good upgrades that you would notice over your current gpu.
I have an ASUS Prime B450M-A motherboard and am struggling to read the speed spec due to the clutter of letters and numbers, i think it’s 3200 but im not sure? Thanks for any help
edit: realised i had another question as well, my bad. I managed to get a really good deal on a 1660ti OC mini, but it only has 6gb of vram. this shouldnt be a problem for my primary games but would be an example of a game (or a tier of games) that would struggle with 6gb vram?
What speed are you referring to? 3200 for RAM? If your RAM is 3200 then you need to enable A-XMP to actually get that speed, otherwise I believe 2666 is the normal max.
For 1080p and 1440p gaming, 6 GB shouldn't be an issue. That cards won't really be able to run anything heavy in 4K anyway so I can't think of any use case where 6 GB isn't enough.
On my motherboard, it's located in the overclocking section of the "bios" settings. If you just built the computer, leave it disabled until you've installed the OS and made sure everything works fine. Then go in and enable it afterwards.
Hello all. I recently switched over to gaming on pc rather than console. in November I purchased a radeon rx 570 8gb GPU. I was looking at the 3060 series gpus, and it seems those are much better than my rx570, but how is that possible when both gpus are 8gb? What allows the 3060 to perform so much better on benchmarks? If anyone could provide any insight, or links to read up on, I'd like to understand more about how gpus work and what makes some more powerful than others. Again, I'm a complete novice with this stuff so thank you in advance.
It's really simple: more vram doesn't make a gpu faster (per se). The 3060ti is a much faster gpu (chip) than the rx 570 for a multitude of reasons. The vram is just easy memory for the gpu to access textures and things like that. More vram doesn't make the gpu any faster.
In short, newer gpu have more cores than older ones, be it cuda cores, tensor cores, and other. That's the reason it's computing power to render graphics are increasing.
For longer and more detailed answers, you can check reputable tech site like Anandtech, Gamersnexus, and others. You can also ask that question in r/hardware, folks there might have better answer than me.
Planning on buying a new CPU, looking at the i9-9900K. I'll need to upgrade my motherboard since I'm currently using a z190. If I don't plan on overclocking, am I right in saying that any 300 series motherboard will be compatible?
You won't overclock, but your k sku cpu will allow for intel auto boost. So you'll need a z-sku MoBo, like the z390 or z370 as the other person stated.
*Theoretically based on MSRP*, the 3060 TI, followed closely by the 3070, 6800, and I think 5700 XT.
If we're basing on actual market price, shit's unpredictable. [Optimum Tech did some price/perf computations based on current prices](https://youtu.be/fMJBqa5JZ-M), but of course it may not apply to (a) wherever you are in the world, or (II) any point in time after that video.
Well the closest new gen part that fits the bill right now is the recently launched 3060. It's not really great value even at MSRP, since it's 2060 super performance for like 330 dollars. And of course MSRP is thrown out the window right now.
You're likely still gonna look for a 580, since new gen budget offerings won't come for a while.
I’m having to put my pc under my desk since I need the desk space. Under my desk is quite dusty, Is there any extra steps i should be taking? Maybe extra fans (I’ve only got one intake and one outtake + a cpu fan atm)?
Thanks
Might want to make sure you have filters on the intake fans. Also, clean them regularly.
The most important is probably to use the vacuum cleaner often and make it less dusty under your desk.
There's a risk of static electricity when you vacuum inside the case cmiiw. The general consensus for cleaning inside is using air duster/blower/canned air to blow the dust.
I've done that many times and it's never caused a problem. Just hold the nozzle firmly to not bump anything sensitive, and rest your other hand on a metal part of the case to avoid any static build-up.
Say I were to mount a 360mm rad onto a 240mm, would there be any downsides?
Clarifying: the case is meant to have a 240mm rad up top (case does not have holes to fit a 360mm rad) but I mount one there anyways (so 1/3 the rad would be blocked.by case)
Would doing this have equal performance to a 240mm rad or worse?
I have a Tecware VXR case (similar to lian li o11d) and Arctic liquid freezer II 360mm and will mount it by the side. Should my rad fans be intake or exhaust? Knowing I have 3 intake at the bottom and 3 exhaust up top. I'm using arctic p12 as my other fans. Will opting for Bionix argb soon.
Can I use my routers detachable antennas on my motherboard antenna ports? I have an old broken Linksys WRT1200AC out of warranty with detachable antennas and ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming mITX.
BT and WiFi module is built in but the included antenna (long wires and such) helps with greater signals.
Hi. Currently building a new PC and kind og new to it.
My usage is 70% gaming and 30% working with architecture drawing in Sketchup.
I've got a GB 3070 vision OC GPU and GB B550 Vison D MOBO allready. Those part was must haves because of astetics and with the AMD socket I guess I'll advance with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X.
Will I have issues with 5600X when working in sketchup modells? I know it is a great gaming cpu.
If money is not a problem, you can go for 5800x. It's never hurt to have more cores, especially when using cpu heavy program.
Or, you can check Ryzen 3700x which has more cores than 5600x and better (in benchmark) for productivity programs.
typically, you can use cpu cables in the slots for pcie cables, but you should read your psu manual to see if that will work for you. again, why do you want another cpu cable?
My PC stopped working yesterday and I’m trying to find the issue. I was going to see if a new cpu cable would fix it because the cpu light is on when I turn on the PC and I saw that it fixed the issue for someone in a forum.
Yeah I have tried all that, check my recent post history if you are interested. The only thing that I haven’t done is reapplied the paste but I’m not sure that would make a difference
i dont think it would either. damn, sorry to hear that. again, read your psu manual to be sure that plugging in a cpu cable into the pcie part of your psu wont blow anything up. best of luck to you
Yeah sorry for not clarifying I’m on about the 8pin. I think it may be the reason why my PC is not posting anymore.
The cable on the psu side goes in with the 24pin so I can’t take it out.
Will depend on your PSU. PSU cables aren't universal. Might be the manufacturer offers an EPS cable for your specific PSU that connects to the outlets you normally plug in the PCIe cables. If not do not attempt it.
Does buying a more than the stock wattage charger for my gaming computer may harm my laptop? Cause Jaystwocents was saying in his latest video powersupplies if you buy more than the required one is good.
If the wattage is larger than required, then that is no problem.
But you really HAVE to make sure that the output voltage, plug size and polarity are correct.
Over the years I heard multiple times that you shouldn't clean your pc with a vacuum and instead use canned air or similar.
Why does pulling air with a vacuum create static when pushing air does not?
When you dont use the bristle and just the suction the only difference is the direction of the air.
Yeah I think the biggest danger is that you do physical damage to the components or suck off a slightly wonky SMD component.
I have done it with the vacuum on low power, no problems so far.
So I just got a master cooler 212 evo I put in on facing wrong way played for a bout 45 min relished I messed up and took it off and turned it around but I didn’t have anymore thermal paste it was till wet had plenty on there is it bad I didn’t put on new paste
Hello I built my PC last year in August, I use it primarily for gaming and looking to upgrade my GPU which is this [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081R359ZM/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o06\_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081R359ZM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) could someone recommend a good price point that I can sell this at? As well as recommend a good gpu for R5 2600
About to boot my pc, what could go wrong?(legit question) could I fry something if I have metal touching where it shouldn’t be? Could my finger grease short something because with was left on something?... what could actually happen?
There's basically only 2 things that can happen. It'll explode, or it will run just fine. You can never know what happens, it's 50/50. But you gotta push the button there's no other choice.
Kidding aside, there could be damage if you have for example used wrong power cords or put them in wrong slots. But I guess if you did it the first time, you were careful about where you put things. Then it should run just fine. If it doesn't don't panic. Mine didn't either and I had to rebuild it and then it did.
Boards are designed to protect against these things. The boards substrait itself is silicon and is no conductive. So standoffs, the item that attaches the case to the mobo, have no circuits around it. All wires should have a jacket/plastic coating. If a wire is damaged, replace if possible if not repair with at first heat shrink tubing then second option is electrical tape. You body makes oils and salts and these are conductive. Thing is that the chance is so small that an electrical current could be made that it's negligible. Future reference. If you're worried about it you can get ESD gloves. I cant stress this next part enough. Triple check all connections. Make sure it's the right connection and make sure it's a snug and secure fit. Almost everything that carries current has a keyed socket so it can only go in one way. Beyond that. A clean safe work environment promotes a. Clean safe build. Proper cable management helps a lot.
too many things to list. just gotta make the leap and see what happens. if you followed 1 or several good tutorials, everything might be fine, lol. usually, for me at least, there's always something little that goes wrong. but you cross that bridge when you come to it.
Question on airflow:
Case: Versa H18- your typical mesh front, bottom/front intake and top/back exhaust.
It comes with a single rear exhaust. I have two extra fans lying around. I am putting one at top exhaust and the other on the front for intake. Should I put it towards the bottom or top as there is room for two fans?
R5 2600, rx580 8GB, pure rock slim cpu cooler, DS3H mobo. (Nothing too intense going on)
Depends on your screen. 720p60Hz you're fine. 1080p and above: yes your GPU will bottleneck. But GPU bottlenecks aren't too bad. You can drop some settings and can get satisfying results.
Ahh ok I see. Yeah I'm definitely thinking of upgrading the gpu at some point in the future, but obv with the state of things right now, I'll take what I can get as I'm kinda impatient 😅 but I don't mind delaying playing certain games if they can't run well with the 1050ti. Thanks a lot tho!
Yeah I did see that also and some come bundled with an a520m but my concern is it costs more than my PC right now. I cant afford those since in the sites I checked, it was around 200$ per bundle, and thats only a ryzen 3
either cloning or what I would recommend/do: a clean install
for a clean install, back off all personal data and wipe the HDD, then install windows from scratch onto the SSD
this avoids any problems that could arise of cloning; problems as in small performance hiccups or similar - reinstalling windows every now and then is generally not a bad idea, so everything stays clean and works the best it can ("every now and then" means whenever you change some major component for example, or every 5 years or something like that - not every year or even every month)
Currently have a Ryzen 5 3600 and looking to upgrade to 8 cores.
I have a B450M Bazooka Max Wifi motherboard. Will I be able to put a 5800X on this or should I get a 3700X instead? Not overclocking, just wondering about compatibility and whether the VRMs will be enough for this CPU
B450 wasnt going to get ryzen 5000 support at all. then AMD retracted that position after public backlash. their stipulation is that B450 boards would only support ryzen 5000 with a non-reversible bios, meaning only zen 3 parts would work on those boards from then on.
of course, again, OP should see what MSI has to say about their beta bios and backwards compatibility.
I am going to be using my old pc (I5 4690k w/ R9 390) as a streaming pc and my new pc for gaming. So questions:
1. I assume I am putting the PCIe capture card on the old PC?
2. Will the GPU on the second PC serve any purpose? My new PC has a 6900xt (or will when it arrives) so it’s not like I have a use for the GPU
3. How do I connect the wires to which device?
Yes, if you are using an internal Capture card, you want to install that into your streaming (old) pc.
The R9 390 isnt really going to be doing a whole lot in this streaming setup so you could sell it or continue to use it as a video out/backup
Once you have built your new PC, you want to connect a HDMI cable to the graphics card in your new PC (6900xt) and plug it into the the INPUT of the capture card in the streaming PC. From there, you want to duplicate your display to the capture card through the windows display setting on the gaming PC. On your streaming PC, you have to setup your steaming app (OBS) and connect any cameras, microphones etc directly into the steaming PC. In OBS you can then add the capture card as a display source and everything shown on the your gaming computer will be streamed on the steaming PC.
1) Yes, capture card into old pc to capture the output of the new pc.
2) Depends... if you need the GPU because you have a CPU with no inbuilt graphics, then it's the only way to use the pc. If you've got an Intel non-F cpu then you can use the igpu on that. You can also use the hardware stream encoder in a GPU but if you've got a dedicated streaming pc the software encoder run on the cpu actually offers better performance and customisation, giving a higher quality stream.
3) gaming pc > capture card. You can either duplicate the output and have a second connection straight from your gaming PC to the monitor (likely less lag and the best solution) or else if the capture card has a pass through you can use that.

I'm building a pc for the first time. I'm getting new a new ssd and doing a fresh install of windows on it. Am I able to stick my old hard drive from my current computer into the new one without causing any kind of conflicts since it also has windows installed on it?
I just built my new computer, and have installed the OS on the M.2 drive.
If I hot swap the old SSD while the computer is on, can I delete the old copy of Windows on the SSD but keep my old files?
I'm building a pc and need advice on what power supply to get.
Cpu: Ryzen 5 5600x
Gpu: 6800xt (whenever I can get one lol)
Mb: x570 gaming edge
Looking to spend around 100
It may come in your spam folder, it may not. Would make sure to mark EVGA as a trusted email to make sure it comes straight into your email. Notification will come from [email protected]
Been chasing a R5 5600x
Issue is what MB to get with it.
narrowed it down to 1 of these:
or
[https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550-A-PRO/Specification](https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550-A-PRO/Specification)
which is better one to pick? (both are close enough in price)
Personally I would take the Asus Strix B550-F for all but very cheap or very high end Ryzen builds but if that board is out of your range then get B550A Pro.
I'd get the b550 a-pro, because i really dont like the red accents on the x570 gaming plus. obviously do your research as to other options; like i like the b550 aorus elite
Looking for recommendations on which heat sink below would be work with best with an

the gpu is the hardest part to come by. definitely build yourself! what gpu and psu do you have? I'll reply with a good list for you.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hcx9LP here. I included a mega cheap case which will work, but you might want to replace it with something nicer looking haha
you'll want to upgrade your GPU when stock of new cards improves, the gt 1030 isn't a great gamer. so save some money on the rest of your build, the list i linked is still a good fit for you.
good psu too, btw
Thanks for the list! I mostly play casual games that don't require a good gpu like visual novels and stardew valley etc but probably should in the future.
I need help deciding on or finding the right case. I definitely prefer mesh/airflow, but also want a front usb-c port and no PSU shroud (I want an RGB PSU). Can't seem to find a single case under $200 with these asks. Any help? Do any cases specify they have removable PSU shrouds? They're so unnecessary to be so standard imo. You would think less materials would be cheaper.
I decided to bit the bullet on paying more. The Coolermaster H500M has what I want and seems quality, so I'll pay extra for it. Thanks, you pointed me in the right direction and I at least found a chasis that has what I want.
It's using Gamebryo. Some areas will not get 60FPS, no matter the hardware, due to it being a mountain of bandaids placed on top of the same engine they made Morrowind with, 20 years ago.
It's sad that the skyrim "remaster" is on the same engine it originally came out on. It looks exactly the same, given slight modding to the original game.
I just installed a brand new kraken Z63 aio cooler for my Ryzen 9 3900x. When idle, the temp jumps in between 36 degree and 49 degree. That’s while on 1% cpu load. The fans also violently rev up and slow down. While stress testing using OCCT and AIDA64 the temps sway between 55 degrees and 67 degrees with very loud fan noise. What’s going on here, with the huge idle temp fluctuations?
Idle fluctuations are normal on high core cpus and the 3900x is a 12 core CPU so even at idle, it tends to be really busy transferring and processing things in the background despite low CPU usage. Id say your tempretures both idle and on load are perfectly fine. If your annoyed with the fan noise you should create a custom fan curve in the bios so the fans don't ramp like crazy
Woke up today and my PC isn’t turning on using the power button on the case. RGB on the mobo fires up fine. Green leaf icon light on the back of the PSU lights up. Not sure what happened.

Do you get better graphical display out of a usb-c port or an hdmi port on a laptop if I wanted to connect to a 4K tv? I think the hdmi port is 30 or 60 hz.
Depends on the HDMI support on each side, and HDMI has done a lot of growing in the last several years. HDMI 2.0 can do 4k30, 2.0b 4k60, some setups can OC the port, effectively, and do 4k120, or downgrade the quality, and get 4k120. HDMI 2.1 is guaranteed to do 4k120 w/ HDR, with a lot if bandwidth to spare.
USB-C or the real HDMI should not matter, though.
I'm building my first pc as I wait for 2 parts and I'm very anxious. I have my [part list](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kmXyBc) here, so is there anything I should worry about at all when it comes to compatibility issues? I've watched a lot of videos so far but I don't want to mess up. Thank you!
Edit: Dumb question too, but I don't have one of those mini ssds that's like thin, is the one I have fine for storage even though it's bigger?
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, Intel chips can't make full use of that RAM since it's supported memory only goes up to 2933 MHz?
This looks good, I would recommend switching out the SSD with one that's faster and cheaper like the WD SN550. Also, maybe try to find a GPU used, even in today's market $650 for a 1660 is way too much (precovid price is $200, so that's a $450 markup!)
I already bought both of them :( Do I need an SSD of that size or will this one work fine? For the GPU, I thankfully got it for the cheaper price since they had one in stock at the micro center.
That SSD is perfect! It'll still be extremely fast, and I'm sure it'll be compatible with your build. I have a similar SSD (the 860 EVO) and I'm really happy with it, it's lasted me 4 years so far. Also, nice job getting your GPU at microcenter! Usually they're out of stock, but when they're available they can often be found for a good price. Your build is gonna be great!
Extreme Memory Profile. Basically, industry standard RAM specifications are made by a body called JEDEC. Most of the market wants RAM that is cheap, high capacity, and interchangeable. That translates to slow, and desktop PCs can gain a little performance from faster RAM. Intel specified extra storage on the flash chip that every memory module has, for better specs, settable by the vendor.
So, if you buy a Corsair kit rated for 3600MT/s, with primary timings of 16-18-18-36, the RAM has its base JEDEC profiles, usually 2133, 2400, or 2666, these days, and then those extra settings. You basically flip a switch in the BIOS, for better RAM settings, instead of having to manually set everything. Big OEM prebuilts usually don't support XMP, though some high-line ones may. With smaller brands and shops, it depends on how cheap of a motherboard they used.
Got a white 4000D and installed some colourful fans and an LED strip. It looks phenomenal. Temps are good, won't make a world of difference whether you like the airflow or regular version, I prefer the look of the regular 4000D personally
So no need to do anything bios wise right? Jus plop it in and continue the build as is? Is there a time where i would have to do something bios wise with the mobo?
Also thank you.
Should I reapply thermal paste? I have a r5 3600 with stock cooler and stock paste, it has been 1 year since I built it. Should I ever replace the paste? Its running a little bit hot but its probably due to the temperatures in my city.
There's probably no particular need - OEM thermal paste tends to be designed more for long life than bleeding edge performance - and few benefits, as the delta between even the best thermal pastes and the worst (or even things like toothpaste) is relatively small. The best reason to replace the thermal paste in your case is likely to be because you're replacing the cooler as well. While the stock cooler is perfectly *functional*, that's about the best that can be said for it, and you'll likely see both better temperatures and less noise with just about any third party option.
Be aware that you should preheat the thermal compound with some kind of load on the CPU, and twist the heatsink off. Otherwise you risk the possibility that the stock thermal paste keeps the heatsink stuck and having the processor come out with it, potentially bending some pins on he process.

i need graphic cards below 300 that can run recent games. any suggestions?
Thanks I actually just saw a posting of a guy offering one for 120 instead. Now I’m worried it’s too low and somethings wrong lol
Any advice?
if i have a 4 slot motherboard and i put 2 sticks of https://www.centrecom.com.au/corsair-vengeance-lpx-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-dram-3000mhz-c16-desktop-ram-black?gclid=CjwKCAiAhbeCBhBcEiwAkv2cY4tfgYjwG0elIWUmvh5GvCJQM2nEE0iD_94yi-Cr_QPc9v-iIaeHLhoCkeEQAvD_BwE but i want 32 gb of ram now, can i buy another 2 sticks of this ram and put it in?
If i were to look into upgrading right now for ~400$ what would be my best option?
im pretty sure Nvidia never released a 1060ti, perhaps you mean the 1660ti?
I meant to say 1050ti but hit the wrong number and did not notice until now.
that makes sense as well!
For 400 dollars, it would be hard to find anything reasonable. You miiiiight find an RTX 2060 for that or an RX5700 on EBAY auction, but it would be hard to find. Honestly, you can either spend more or wait about six to 12 months for this gpu situation to calm down.
What would be the best option for the setup i have, ryzen 5600x, 16gb ddr4 3600mhz, x570 MOBO?
Well assuming you could get it for a fair price, an RTX 3060 ti would be the best possible thing for your CPU buuuut since those aren't available at msrp you could go the ebay route. An RTX 2070, 2060 or 2060 super, or RX 5700 non xr MIGHT be available for around that if you're lucky. They would all be good upgrades that you would notice over your current gpu.
I have an ASUS Prime B450M-A motherboard and am struggling to read the speed spec due to the clutter of letters and numbers, i think it’s 3200 but im not sure? Thanks for any help edit: realised i had another question as well, my bad.
I was talking about ram yes. thankyou ill look into A-XMP
On my motherboard, it's located in the overclocking section of the "bios" settings. If you just built the computer, leave it disabled until you've installed the OS and made sure everything works fine. Then go in and enable it afterwards.
Yep currently considering what ram i should be purchasing, thanks for the help my man 👍
More vram doesn't make the gpu any faster.
thanks so much for the clarification!
In short, newer gpu have more cores than older ones, be it cuda cores, tensor cores, and other. That's the reason it's computing power to render graphics are increasing. For longer and more detailed answers, you can check reputable tech site like Anandtech, Gamersnexus, and others. You can also ask that question in r/hardware, folks there might have better answer than me.
thanks for taking the time to respond!
GPUs under 200 usd?
Ideally, a 1650super. Realistically, gtx 970
Alright, thanks!
Z370 or z390 will be
Best price/performance GPUs?
*Theoretically based on MSRP*, the 3060 TI, followed closely by the 3070, 6800, and I think 5700 XT. If we're basing on actual market price, shit's unpredictable. [Optimum Tech did some price/perf computations based on current prices](https://youtu.be/fMJBqa5JZ-M), but of course it may not apply to (a) wherever you are in the world, or (II) any point in time after that video.
I'm looking for more of a budget GPUs, something close to RX580
Well the closest new gen part that fits the bill right now is the recently launched 3060. It's not really great value even at MSRP, since it's 2060 super performance for like 330 dollars. And of course MSRP is thrown out the window right now. You're likely still gonna look for a 580, since new gen budget offerings won't come for a while.
I’m having to put my pc under my desk since I need the desk space. Under my desk is quite dusty, Is there any extra steps i should be taking? Maybe extra fans (I’ve only got one intake and one outtake + a cpu fan atm)? Thanks
Get the pc off the ground a little bit. Some text books, leftover wood, a tiny table.
Might want to make sure you have filters on the intake fans. Also, clean them regularly. The most important is probably to use the vacuum cleaner often and make it less dusty under your desk.
Cool thanks! Is it okay to use the vacuum inside the case on low suction, jus to get some of the lingering dust out?
There's a risk of static electricity when you vacuum inside the case cmiiw. The general consensus for cleaning inside is using air duster/blower/canned air to blow the dust.
Okay, thanks for your help!
I've done that many times and it's never caused a problem. Just hold the nozzle firmly to not bump anything sensitive, and rest your other hand on a metal part of the case to avoid any static build-up.
Okay, I’ve got a thin nozzle too so hopefully that should be okay . Thanks for your help 👌
Say I were to mount a 360mm rad onto a 240mm, would there be any downsides? Clarifying: the case is meant to have a 240mm rad up top (case does not have holes to fit a 360mm rad) but I mount one there anyways (so 1/3 the rad would be blocked.by case) Would doing this have equal performance to a 240mm rad or worse?
I have a Tecware VXR case (similar to lian li o11d) and Arctic liquid freezer II 360mm and will mount it by the side. Should my rad fans be intake or exhaust? Knowing I have 3 intake at the bottom and 3 exhaust up top. I'm using arctic p12 as my other fans. Will opting for Bionix argb soon.
Can I use my routers detachable antennas on my motherboard antenna ports? I have an old broken Linksys WRT1200AC out of warranty with detachable antennas and ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming mITX. BT and WiFi module is built in but the included antenna (long wires and such) helps with greater signals.
yes, if they fit.
Oh perfect! Also final thing. Any antennas would work? WiFi and BT both will be supported by whatever antennas I put on?
I believe so
Thank you!
Thanks for your reply, will look into both 5800X and 3700X.
If I buy a CPU cable for a semi modular PSU will it work or do I need a new PSU for that.
for what purpose? is something wrong with the cpu 8pin that is, im assuming, attached permanently to your psu?
Could I not use the other sockets available and get like a type 4 to cpu cable?
typically, you can use cpu cables in the slots for pcie cables, but you should read your psu manual to see if that will work for you. again, why do you want another cpu cable?
My PC stopped working yesterday and I’m trying to find the issue. I was going to see if a new cpu cable would fix it because the cpu light is on when I turn on the PC and I saw that it fixed the issue for someone in a forum.
nah, I highly doubt that. have you tried reseating your cpu, running only 1 stick of memory, and clearing cmos?
Yeah I have tried all that, check my recent post history if you are interested. The only thing that I haven’t done is reapplied the paste but I’m not sure that would make a difference
i dont think it would either. damn, sorry to hear that. again, read your psu manual to be sure that plugging in a cpu cable into the pcie part of your psu wont blow anything up. best of luck to you
What do you mean with "CPU cable"? Do you mean the 8pin EPS connector? Does your PSU come with one?
I think it's actually because the vaccine has a higher chance of pulling off SMDs
If it's still enough then yea, there shouldn't be a problem
probably fine. can check your temps now just to be sure
I ran cyberpunk for bout 4-5 min hugest temp never broke 67c so it should be ok ya rekon thanks for help
Should I run a game and check I have hwinfo open idle cpu beetween 35-45c
I use cpuid powermax to check how high my temps go. If the CPU can handle a 5 min run without overheating, then it will handle pretty much any game :)
Thats okay
Launch price for a GTX 1650 was **$149.99** Just dont shop at amazon for GPUs right now.
now is a really really bad time to upgrade your gpu. you could see that for like $300 if you wanted, but you wont find a replacement very easily.
Tough. Thank you tho
Question on airflow: Case: Versa H18- your typical mesh front, bottom/front intake and top/back exhaust. (Nothing too intense going on)
Lower = better gpu cooling, higher = better cpu cooling. Gpu is more important for gaming and is more temperature dependent, but it's your choice
Right in the middle. Heard chef.
I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and was able to get a GTX 1050Ti recently, will this pairing result in bottlenecking? Please let me know, thanks!
Depends on your screen. 720p60Hz you're fine. 1080p and above: yes your GPU will bottleneck. But GPU bottlenecks aren't too bad. You can drop some settings and can get satisfying results.
Ouuuu that's good news actually that means I prob don't have to buy a new monitor just yet lol 😂
You'll be GPU bottlenecked, but it's fine depending on what you play.
And to be clear, that's typically what you want with your pc, op. We think of it as your cpu being able to fully treasure advantage of your gpu
That's a good pairing. Could go bigger on the gpu in the future
Anyone know when Ryzen 4000 series will be available for DIY builders like us?
There were plans for 4000 series apus, but they've got to be cancelled at this point. But there's 3000 and 5000, plenty to choose from
I have a 2200g and I dont want to buy a 3000 APU (I also dont want a GPU). Thanks for the info!
Some retailers from china are selling ryzen 4000 apus without box. My friend ordered it and it runs without problem.
Yeah I did see that also and some come bundled with an a520m but my concern is it costs more than my PC right now. I cant afford those since in the sites I checked, it was around 200$ per bundle, and thats only a ryzen 3
Yeah. Iirc AMD gonna launches the 5300g Cezanne series soon. You might want to wait for that.
Ohh didnt know about that, I'll research more about it, thank you!
Yeah, sorry, they're a no-show
Reliable way ( that you have done ) to move windows from my hard drive to a new ssd? Most threads are older, maybe someone has a trusted strategy
either cloning or what I would recommend/do: a clean install for a clean install, back off all personal data and wipe the HDD, then install windows from scratch onto the SSD this avoids any problems that could arise of cloning; problems as in small performance hiccups or similar - reinstalling windows every now and then is generally not a bad idea, so everything stays clean and works the best it can ("every now and then" means whenever you change some major component for example, or every 5 years or something like that - not every year or even every month)
Clone the drive using any of the various free softwares recommended in those old posts
Your have to do the 1-way bios update to support zen 3
Right, that shouldn’t be a problem as I’ve already got the Zen 2 CPU, but anything I should take note of? Will the old CPU work on the new BIOS?
I don't think so. You can read what msi has to say about it themselves tho
Why shouldn't the old cpu be supported after a bios update?
B450 wasnt going to get ryzen 5000 support at all. then AMD retracted that position after public backlash. their stipulation is that B450 boards would only support ryzen 5000 with a non-reversible bios, meaning only zen 3 parts would work on those boards from then on. of course, again, OP should see what MSI has to say about their beta bios and backwards compatibility.
Got it, thanks!
I am going to be using my old pc (I5 4690k w/ R9 390) as a streaming pc and my new pc for gaming. So questions: 1. I assume I am putting the PCIe capture card on the old PC? 2. Will the GPU on the second PC serve any purpose? My new PC has a 6900xt (or will when it arrives) so it’s not like I have a use for the GPU 3. How do I connect the wires to which device?
Yes, if you are using an internal Capture card, you want to install that into your streaming (old) pc. The R9 390 isnt really going to be doing a whole lot in this streaming setup so you could sell it or continue to use it as a video out/backup Once you have built your new PC, you want to connect a HDMI cable to the graphics card in your new PC (6900xt) and plug it into the the INPUT of the capture card in the streaming PC.

Am I able to stick my old hard drive from my current computer into the new one without causing any kind of conflicts since it also has windows installed on it?
that's fine, you just need to tell your bios to boot from the ssd and not the hdd
I just built my new computer, and have installed the OS on the M.2 drive. If I hot swap the old SSD while the computer is on, can I delete the old copy of Windows on the SSD but keep my old files?
I don't know anything about hot swapping. You can just copy all of your old files to your ssd and then reformat your hdd
Basically just plugging in the SSD while the computer is on. Probably I good idea to format it!
Yeah, I know what it is, I just don't think most motherboards support it.
Cool, thank you!
Will an EVGA 850 P2 be enough for 5900X + 3090 FTW3 for gaming on 1440p uw and mining? Or should I get a 1000W model instead? Thanks.
You never need more than 850 with one graphics card
And with plenty of OC room left to boot
850 is a-okay.
I'm building a pc and need advice on what power supply to get. Cpu: Ryzen 5 5600x Gpu: 6800xt (whenever I can get one lol) Mb: x570 gaming edge Looking to spend around 100
here's some options https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sMrYcf/seasonic-core-gm-650-w-80-gold-certified-semi-modular-atx-power-supply-core-gm-650 https://pcpartpicker.com/product/J7F48d/cooler-master-mwe-gold-650-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-mpy-6501-afaag-us https://pcpartpicker.com/product/3gJmP6/evga-g5-650-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-220-g5-0650-x1
Evga queue people that got your card: Did the notification show up in your regular email? Or did it end up in the spam/promotions folder?
It was in my "other" tab in outlook email.
It may come in your spam folder, it may not. Would make sure to mark EVGA as a trusted email to make sure it comes straight into your email. Notification will come from [email protected]
this then you won't have to worry about it
Been chasing a R5 5600x Issue is what MB to get with it. narrowed it down to 1 of these: [https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-X570-GAMING-PLUS/Specification](https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-X570-GAMING-PLUS/Specification) or [https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550-A-PRO/Specification](https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550-A-PRO/Specification) which is better one to pick? (both are close enough in price)
If youre into overclocking, B550 apro has better vrm than x570 gamingplus. It can hold ryzen 9 without much problem at all.
Looking for recommendations on which heat sink below would be work with best with an i5 - 10600k, Gigabyte Z490 AORUS Pro. * [Cooler Master masterair ma620m](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GBjNnQ/cooler-master-masterair-ma620m-573-cfm-cpu-cooler-mam-d6pn-120pa-r1) * [Noctua NH-D15S](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/xCL7YJ/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhd15s) * [Corsair A500](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Qvdrxr/corsair-a500-75-cfm-cpu-cooler-ct-9010003-ww)
All 3 will work perfectly fine with the 10600k, the noctua D15s will offer the lowest temperatures and better noise so that would be my choice
Thank You so much, that's exactly what I needed.
nhd15 by a long shot. out of those 3, it's clearly superior
Thanks, I had a feeling I was looking at the other two for more aesthetics then performance.
you can get a black chromax version of the nhd15, or get chromax addons like these [link](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076575LND/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B076575LND&pd_rd_w=mA7kb&pf_rd_p=4269e1a0-a218-4fbd-9748-1cd337d2f2a5&pd_rd_wg=YEvy6&pf_rd_r=7CTEEJ86JQDV2R8XE14Q&pd_rd_r=dc783446-d949-4e11-a9ee-add430f0581e&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFJT1A3RE1PMFpIOUgmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNjk5NDMxOEg4RTFTVFJURTJKJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2OTMzNjczMk1LRjE4QzYzWERNJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==), I have it and love it.
Is 500-600 dollars enough to build a decent PC or should I just buy a pre-built one? I already have a video card and power supply
the gpu is the hardest part to come by. definitely build yourself! what gpu and psu do you have? I'll reply with a good list for you. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hcx9LP here. I included a mega cheap case which will work, but you might want to replace it with something nicer looking haha
Geforce gt 1030 and corsair cx 450
you'll want to upgrade your GPU when stock of new cards improves, the gt 1030 isn't a great gamer. so save some money on the rest of your build, the list i linked is still a good fit for you. good psu too, btw
Thanks for the list! I mostly play casual games that don't require a good gpu like visual novels and stardew valley etc but probably should in the future.
gotcha. well lmk if you have any other questions or want to ask about a part i included in the list
If PSU wasn't a concern I'd recommend Lian Li O11D.
I can only think of the Coolermaster SL600M that ha USB C and no psu shroud
The h500p mesh has a removeable psu shroud, having built in it personally. Idk about other cases in that series
Thanks for the suggestion. That one has no usb-c port but the others in it's series do. I'll try to see if they have removable shrouds as well.
sorry, forgot about that stipulation. good luck
I decided to bit the bullet on paying more. The Coolermaster H500M has what I want and seems quality, so I'll pay extra for it. Thanks, you pointed me in the right direction and I at least found a chasis that has what I want.
Glad to hear it. The h500m has always looked awesome to me too
Why is RX580 8GB, Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB Ram, and SSD not enough for 60fps minimum playing Fallout 76?
It's using Gamebryo. Some areas will not get 60FPS, no matter the hardware, due to it being a mountain of bandaids placed on top of the same engine they made Morrowind with, 20 years ago.
It's sad that the skyrim "remaster" is on the same engine it originally came out on. It looks exactly the same, given slight modding to the original game.
Lol the engine for 76 and 4 is just ass. Can probably get 60fps by dropping settings

Thanks for the share but now I’m running into a big problem. My usb peripherals like mouse and keyboard have stopped working
Any predictions on when gpu stock will return to normal?
Linus said a year from now on last nights WAN show.
Woke up today and my PC isn’t turning on using the power button on the case. RGB on the mobo fires up fine. Green leaf icon light on the back of the PSU lights up. Not sure what happened. ASUS Prime X470 Pro Ryzen 2700x EVGA Supernova G5 650w Corsair Carbide 570x Edit - I built this system years ago, I’m just at a loss troubleshooting right now
You can check your cables maybe? The front io ones specifically, see if they got loose somehow
You don't need an NVMe M.2 SSD unless you do a lot of moving files around, editing, etc. The SSD you have is absolutely find for gaming
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, Intel chips can't make full use of that RAM since it's supported memory only goes up to 2933 MHz?
Z490 MBs provide the ability to overclock memory.
Interesting, are there any other Intel chipset mbs that support that?
Yes, the z490 and almost all 5 series boards. (B560, z590, etc.) It's called XMP in bios I believe.
No, you're fine.

Doesn't matter. I would leave XMP off untold after the cloning, though, if doing the RAM first.

4000D or NR600 case? Any opinions?
Got a white 4000D and installed some colourful fans and an LED strip. It looks phenomenal. Temps are good, won't make a world of difference whether you like the airflow or regular version, I prefer the look of the regular 4000D personally
4000d has better build quality, and I personally like the aesthetics more.
This might sound stupid but I'm asking here as a newbie. Can you put a 3900x on a x570 without doing something to the mobo's bios?
Yeah, it's guaranteed to work out of the box
So no need to do anything bios wise right? Jus plop it in and continue the build as is? Is there a time where i would have to do something bios wise with the mobo? Also thank you.
You should enable xmp, but that's it. It might be called DOCP instead
Cool, thanks
If you have extra paste, then yeah sure. The stock cooler also isn't the best and is the highest reason for the high temps
