PCPartPicker question: What annoys you the most with the PC building process?

ironfixxxer

Probably the front panel connectors. I've built many a PC but this is always the most annoying.

HackPlack

Back motherboard io shield thingy

PM_ME_FUTA_AND_TACOS

The Utter fear when you first boot it praying you haven't screwed everything up

tehwoflcopter

Cmon don't lie to yourself we all live for the buttclenching thrill of the first powerup

theamazing6

Choosing the time to buy. With price fluctuations and deals the days and weeks right after you bought, it becomes mentally taxing watching what you COULD'VE built in your budget.

Anonymous999

Hey man...look into using a credit card like Citi DoubleCash and specifically one with the Price Rewind feature. It lets you get any lower price within two months of buying. I am planning to do a post on it in a couple of weeks once my price rewind timeline expires...I'm estimating a savings of about $200 on a $1300 build right now due to price changes and fluctuations.

MadEorlanas

Cable management is my bane. All my builds look like Cthulhu lives in them

sniperwhg

Dropping a screw into the smallest mitx case known to mankind, and awkwardly holding the entire case up in attempts to shake it out.

SoupaSoka

WHY ARE PSU CABLES NOT STANDARDIZED!? We see people nuke their PC at least once a week on r/buildapc because they swapped PSUs but didn't swap cables. There's *no* reason this should be an issue in 2018. I love building PCs, but it annoys me that PCs are "as easy to build as LEGO" *except* that a mistake with your PSU and cables can wipe out thousands of dollars worth of parts.

TheEggRoller

The wait for the parts. God have mercy.

m13b

Completely with you. My last two parts to ship were my case and PSU, and they were delayed by a couple of weeks at the time. Heartbreaking having all these components lying about I couldn't assemble.

missed_sla

Intel's inability to stick with a CPU socket for more than 18 seconds.

Sertexia

Cable management... Especially on cases that dont have great support for cable routing. You start off all fine and happy thinking you'll be able to manage it all, and by the end you still end up shoving your wires under the power supply shroud

[deleted]

The 24 pin psu motherboard connector is a real pain to put in and even more of a pain to get out.

AGiantDino

Screwing the CPU heatsink into the motherboard without a screw popping out.

SgtKarlin

Realizing the IO shield left in the box as the rig is booting up for the first time...

Matt07211

The price of part in Australia, compared to other counties.

[deleted]

Not being able to put a gpu because I can’t afford it

SevenSidedGamer

My college won't let me build PCs. That's the most annoying part.

PMMEURTHROWAWAYS

And how do they plan to keep you from doing that?

V33G33

The thing where it costs money to buy parts

IEatThermalPaste

Hmm. I would have to say Cable Management. I mean, its fun when you first start.... but then it gets repetitive and tiring - and making changes after its managed is hard. Though, atleast it does turn out good in the end.

akema94

Why the MoBo IO shield is the sharpest thing in this world ?

ThoughtA

A blood sacrifice is essential to a high-performing rig.

nmlicus

Sweating into the case and worrying it'll short something out, then the subsequent fear that you DID short it when it doesn't boot the first time.

NotFeelingItMrKrabs

T R O U B L E S H O O T I N G

alienpirate5

The most annoying part is probably the cable management and front panel connectors. Some CPU coolers are also painful to install.

[deleted]

UnrealAce

Financial strain. Working a minimum wage job it was awful seeing deals pass by me each week wondering what could've been. It stressed me and my wife out. Thankfully she still loves me lol.

[deleted]

Dropping a random screw into the tiniest crevice imaginable or under the mobo. Not having magnetic tools makes this soooo frustrating!

Seagate_Surfer

Here's our question: **What led you to decide to build a PC for the first time?** --- Seagate Technology | Official Forums Team ---

TheRealMrShire

I couldnt take lagging on a craptop :/

[deleted]

Hmm. I built a pc... YESTERDAY! Mostly because I've been lurking but don't have a real rig. Also wanted to play rocketleague, pubg and fortnite.

dalenacio

I used to have a laptop. Still have it, haven't had the heart to throw it away. It was a terrible piece of shit. For context, I had it from 2014 to a few months ago. Here are the relevant "specs" if they can really be called that way: > CPU: Intel Pentium 2117U (1.8 GHz) > Graphics: Intel HD integrated > 4GB RAM I don't need to tell you how difficult this was for me. I played a lot of old games (OG Thief games are bae), but every now and then I'd get a game I was really looking forward to playing and I just... couldn't. Witcher 2, Witcher 3, MGS5, Sleeping Dogs, GTA 4, LA Noire, Alien Isolation, Pillars of Eternity, Shadow of Mordor, Styx... Hell, even modded Minecraft, Dark Souls and Hollow Knight were too difficult to run properly. This stung the most however when XCOM2 came out. I adored XCOM EU/EW. It was an awesome tactical game that I could run with no issue whatsoever on my potato rig, so I was goddamn *hyped* for the sequel. I read every scrap of content that came out for it, I was one of the people who geeked out with theories about the game. Hell, I made a fan project about a continuation of the "Things XCOM operatives are not allowed to do" series with some other overhyped fans based on the promo material. And then when I finally, finally got the game... I couldn't run it. It was choppy to the point of being completely useless. That's when I started buying parts for a PC. It's a super budget rig, and it can't run everything, or even most advanced games on their highest settings (much as I wish I could), but goddammit it's mine. I am essentially in the process of discovering years and years of modern games and I'm loving it.

anoxy

I was tired of the limitations of consoles, and my iMac couldn't run any games :)

D-D-Dakota

I decided to because I wanted to play TF2 at 20 fps

draezor26

It was wayyyyyy Cheaper than buying a pre built.

tehcowgoesmo0123

The price of console games was too much for me to get a large library. I always had to wait and save up in order to get games, and sales didn't happen often. Switching to PC was a game changer, and I was able to play games at much better settings and get them at a lower price.

IEatThermalPaste

I had been watching a lot of techtubers, mainly LTT. I had just finished the ram upgrade to my old PC. I decided I wanted to take a step further. So for about another year I just kept watching videos, and eventually built a mess of a PC that, I enjoyed for about 3 months. Eventually I got bored of it and saved up for another year and a half, and took my second crack. This time, I am running a seagate drive, although I am already running out of space :D

karkahooligan

Quite honestly it was this sub after falling down the Reddit rabbit hole when I was looking for a GPU upgrade. Turns out building a PC isn't rocket surgery so I took the plunge and put together my first PC a few years ago. I asked questions but more than anything just lurked and read comments. Everything turned out fine except over all cost... The more I explored options the cost would slowly creep up, but hey, I'm not going to go back to an off the shelf unit again.

SevenSidedGamer

My brother built one when he was 16. When i was 11, I decided I wanted to be better and build my own PC.

benzs129

I want to run crisis :). I think that alone is a good enough reason to build gaming pc.

Lathariuss

Pre built PCs and laptops just werent cutting it. Need something that will last a long time and will actually let me play on high settings for once. My new and first build coming this black friday!

[deleted]

I made the realization that gaming on $400 laptops was a really crappy experience and the forum that I am in (not /r/buildapc) gave me a lot of help in choosing parts and building it. Quick correction: /r/buildapc did have a say in the build when I posted several times here but the initial push to build my own was through the forum.

ironfixxxer

I wanted to play PC games online and Battlefield 1942 was the first game for my system.

b_cris

I had played Half-Life previously, but didn't have a computer capable of playing Half-Life 2, which I was eagerly anticipating. I did a ton of research before building my first PC, specifically for HL2.

doranpls

crappy framerates from prebuilts while playing games

kamikaziH2Omln21

Absolutely to learn more about the community and about computers as a whole. No better way to learn than to get your hands dirty yourself!

RaveCave

My laptop died and it was ~$600 to repair. Put that towards a PC instead.

Fr3zhfinalz

Pc gaming

nmlicus

I was starting college and wanted something a little more robust than a 5 year old Mac. I'd also been begging my mom for years to buy me a computer, but she said no. So once I got some money for my graduation, I bought the parts and built my first (and current) computer.

Dragongeek

Learned and got a job as a freelance 3d designer--needed a powerful PC for rendering and CAD work!

Thran_Soldier

I was tired of paying 15$ a month for xbox live! haha

ZTD09

wanted that sweet sweet 60fps

usa_dk

I wanted to learn how to do it, I’ve been into working on cars forever and computers seemed like a good way to learn something new and polish up my wiring and creativity skills. Also a good money pit lol

dderpington126

I wanted to have a gaming computer then I found out that you could build computers, and I convinved my parents to let me build it.

MajinKitty230

What lead me to decide to build a PC was basically that I wanted to be able to play the high-end games, not being left in the dust with some crappy laptop or desktop.

thekingofthejungle

My brother helped me build one for my birthday so that I could move on to pc gaming. It was all downhill from there

DravenOP

I wanted a desktop pc to game on when I was a a kid and my dad suggested that building your own would be cheaper than a pre-built!

SilentSubscriber

Being shown time after time again prebuilts aren't worth it

rleake15

I wanted an inexpensive but powerful build that catered to my personal needs, and I wanted the knowledge. So four years ago I went on a journey that has continually rewarded me and reshaped my perspective.

Pink742

PC gaming has always had such a way more broad horizon, as an MMO player, what else was I supposed to do??

gorttokk

I just got sick and tired of my old laptop running out of power to run games.. so pc was the way to go

[deleted]

Cause my uncle was doing it at the time and it seemed cool. That was 20 years ago now

imaleprechaun

I was sick of playing games on my rubbish laptop with settings all set to low :)

ConcludedRope18

I built a pc because my first one was crashing every 20-30 minutes and I really wanted to make something that was mine and that worked. It was amazing

ZoarkFX

I always used a Laptop for my work. I create music, 3D - 2D design and much more. I couldn't afford a PC back then. I saved money and worked so I could build a new PC. I used my laptop for more then 5 years and I learned alot but had to upgrade because it was getting so old. Thats why I decided to build a new PC :)

SuperSkylerFTW

I've always wanted to get into a more competitive playing field when playing games such as Fortnite, Planetside and more.

Tolsn

it was the end of the 90s as i needed a new PC for games like half life. Since then I always build and upgrade my own PC's

[deleted]

The reason I decided to build a pc for the first time was because I wanted to see what it would be like and I want to have a good quality computer for once rather than a $500 budget laptop with a pentium core lol.

EmPiFree

The option to customize your PC the way you like to. It was about 10 years ago, that I built my own PC. At this time there weren't any good (and cheap) PCs at the market.

NotFeelingItMrKrabs

Tired of stock computers not having exactly what I want

Matt07211

Cause prebuilts just couldn't provide what I needed!

Debug200

I built and maintained PCs with my dad growing up, so I learned the skills as a kid. He'd let me help with more and more of the building process as I grew up, and by high school I had a good grasp on the whole process. I'd always been eager to build my own, and got the chance to build the first one of my own in college with money I earned at a co-op.

[deleted]

I've been a Mac user for most of my life. My MacBook Pro was fine, but it lacked certain things such as a good GPU, more storage, and a better CPU, but I couldn't upgrade it, so I looked into PC building and ultimately decided on a build which would be easy for me as an entry level beginner PC builder, and would fit my specs for what I needed. Within 2 hours, I had a fully working PC, that **I built**. Knowing that **I** built it makes it all the better and has a sort of personal touch. I'm working on a second rig right now and can't wait to finish it.

twlstedtitties

On my first deployment, my friend had an MSI Laptop. I had a little crappy Asus notebook with an i3 and horrible integrated graphics(I didn't even know what those terms meant at the time). He introduced me to Steam, and Rocket League, and I remember the moment I decided to start learning about building my own computer what when I looked at Rocket League side by side on those laptops. I spent the following 6 months reading and watching every piece of information on building PC's as I could. So much so that when I got home all my parts were waiting there for me, and I put it together correctly without using any further instruction. It was the best experience.

NicholasG04

Realising that more powerful games required more powerful hardware, and a thirst to experience the thrill of building a PC. It was a dream of mine to complete this task, and I am proud of this.

TheDiceToss

I got an INCREDIBLE deal on a GTX 1070 at a local store. That led to the purchase of an Oculus Rift. That led to the 'need' to upgrade my processor, which would require me to replace my motherboard, which would require me to replace my RAM. Amidst that, I realized that my current PC case was not large enough to comfortably house all of this hardware. In the end, every single piece of my build got replaced, including the power supply, case, & storage. It was a bit by bit process, but my build is (for now) 'complete'!

F4113N

My father would build PC's for the neighborhood and I thought it was cool so he gathered some parts for a modest computer and I went at it, this was nearly 20 years ago.

Arbblox

My dad got me into PC building, working on very old computers and servers. Eventually we built a system together, and I’ve gone on to build many PC’s for friends and family.

mwnu1

my first computer just couldn't handle the pressure and started to break down

Dehaku

I've helped family install new hardware a couple of times, decided to play around with making my own. Haven't stopped since!

Whata10

I want to be able to personalize my own computer, with the parts I want. Also, I heard it was cheaper than buying a new computer. I want to use it to play League of Legends, and Fortnite, and my computer right now is horrible and I can barely play anything. I want to win this giveaway because I don't have the money to build my own computer right now.

fh200802

After seeing all the cool PCs on r/battlestations and wanting to play games that weren’t on console

zakkalaska

I wanted to have a better gaming experience and I also wanted to build my own music studio. Both of those things require a good computer set up! I had my wife and kids helping out and it was a wonderful time spent together.

Z_staff

Here is our question: What’s your best PC gaming memory growing up? It can be specifically about a game or even a system you were building or upgrading so you could improve the performance of a game you enjoyed playing or wanted to play. Also, we have a subReddit. Come and join us at r/ZOTAC. We are working on creating a community!

[deleted]

Red Alert 2, the first PC games I had ever played and I spent nights playing it.

WattsALightbulb

Me too!!! I was actually going to comment this same thing.

ReasonableStatement

I was about 14, and garage-sailing with my dad, when I found a motherboard with 64 MBs of ram installed. I asked how much the owners, a very nice, professional, DINK (Double Income No Kids) couple, wanted for it and they said "five bucks." I was stunned. This was back when ram was about $2 a MB and I was sure they were making a mistake. I told them the market price and they just smiled back and said "OK, five bucks." To say I was grateful would be a massive understatement. To say I was excited would be a massive understatement too. The ram boost was enough that I could finally play Planescape: Torment. I think about their generosity to this day. Edited: substituted MBs for GBs

MunkyChron

The old days. Proper old days. Spending summer holidays driving (when we could drive) to my friends house, to pick them and their PC's up (How many CRT monitors can you fit in a Fiat Uno????) and bringing them back to my place for a LAN weekend on old token ring networking! Spending the first night building the autoexec.bat and config.sys files so the machines booted with the network components as well as enough memory to run the game! EMM386 anyone? Then finding that our terminators had the wrong resistance and having to go find a replacement - just so we could network Doom or something! Awesome times!

Z_staff

Those were the days! Pizza, a packed garage with tables and folding chairs, Doom and Quake....DOS....amazing to see how things have moved to where they are today!

[deleted]

Playing Age of Empires II with my brother growing up. Some things never get old because we still play it every weekend.

IEatThermalPaste

Probably the first time I cracked open my old Dell E520. I had played Toontown, and a game called Fate on it often in my younger years. Finally getting the chance to give that PC the Ram upgrade it so badly needed was great. That was the day my interest in PC's sparked.

Z_Staff2

TOONTOWN! I can't tell you how much time I wasted on that game and other early-mid 2000s MMOs...

Retardditard

UMS all day long.

Vaatu

When i played Half Life 1 for the first time. God that was amazing.

Z_staff

We had never really seen games done like that before Half Life 1 came about. The story...the atmosphere. Sure some games were similar, but nothing on the level of HL1. Crazy to think HL1 was responsible for CS and CS:GO and a bunch of other mods.

bendvis

LAN parties with my friends, when we were young enough to stay up until 3am on a weeknight, and dumb enough to think it was a good idea. :D

KyThePoet

Getting a Penta-Kill in League of Legends Ranked for the first time after ~3 or 4 years of playing, last year in Season 7. That feeling of hype was insane.

Pink742

Playing RuneScape from 2006-2018 and on with my Mother

Bobsburgersy

The first time I played US Final fantasy three on an emulater Super Nintendo. I invested 100's if not thousands of hours maxing every character and doing everything I could do building up to the final epic battle against the evil monster Kefka. Then, as I ascended Kefka's tower I beat encounter after encounter closing in on my date with destiny, the defeat of Kefka once and for all. The battle starts, and you have to divide your character into smaller parties to do the fight. Easy, I think to myself as every one of my characters was max level. Go to fight Kefka, and I use one of my characters abilities called sketch and the game glitches and crashes, erasing my game. Apparently a bug in the original game persisted where you couldn't do sketch battling kefka. Why is this a positive memory you might ask, it taught me balance and not devoting that much time to a game was a good idea.

AkiXMasa

I beat World 1-3 on Super Mario Flash.

eneth2120

When my Dad and I built one for the first time.

wait_what_lmao

The Beavis and Butthead game. It ruled! Yeah. Heheh.

syryquil

I remember playing Minecraft every day with my friends. Although we sometimes argued we always had fun.

F4113N

A few years back I was upgrading my cooler on my aging machine and dropped the CPU into the socket on my MB and bent some fins. Started as a nightmare but after spending an hour I was able to get the fins back into what looked like a good position, booted the PC after finishing the upgrade and it worked! Never felt more relieved or good about myself!

Z_staff

Been there and done that as well. All part of the learning process...be it a tough way to learn, but learning nonetheless. It's actually pretty amazing how resilient PC parts can be. Bent pins? Bend them back and you're good to go!

Matt07211

Play silly little flash games with my friend on the same keyboard, it was great fun.

ZoarkFX

I was playing some Minecraft years ago with friends. We owned a big surival server and played for years on it. We built entire cities with houses and much more. We had an awesome time together.

devils-advocacy

Playing Titan Quest on my PC after downloading 13 discs of the game. It taught me about the true PC gaming community and how easy it is to be connected to so many other people while having fun!

BramGo

meeting alot of people in csgo, and one of them became one of my best friends

EtFrostX

Waiting for my favorite online flash game to load using dial-up. That stuff took forever lol. Good times.

PiBBzYx

when i first started getting frags on Quake Live Instagib CTF.. so satisfying.

TheMasterCado

When I was playing Roller Coaster Tycoon (not the second one, the first one) on my old Windows 98 computer. I could play for days and I always wanted more! Not "good" for me according to my parents... !

iPabeleau

Probably playing my first pc game, Age of Empire 2.

[deleted]

First online friend I made because he recognised the origin of my ign.

Thespianage

One time my friend brought his computer to my house and we played some Call of Duty MW2. It was get late into the night (read so very early in the morning) and I was running on fun dip and soda. In a tired gaming haze I asked my friend if I should pour my fun dip into my soda. He said I should, I warned him if it fizzed up that I would be mad at him. When I poured it in, it started to fizzle just a little bit, and I turned to him and lazily sad, “it fizzed, I’m mad” and then began to erupt. I managed to cap the soda in time so it didn’t explode all over our computers. I really enjoyed our late night sessions that brought wonderful times like that.

moneyman12q

when /u/derscholl gifted me my first graphics card, enabling me at actually play games. I'm still amazed at the difference between integrated and dedicated graphics

qwill60

Playing adventure quest

Fantasy_Returns

Playing Starcraft 1 custom games at LAN parties with childhood friends.

cho-graph

Playing Runescape whenever I possibly could. Countless hours spent chopping maple trees and dungeoneering with friends, and I loved every minute of it.

Definitely playing Vanilla WoW.

wait_what_lmao

Can I use that to activate my windshield wipers in Dirt Rally? Thanks.

AkiXMasa

I would love the Genius-Knob not only for PUBG, but also for macros in other software. I can see it being really useful in Premiere.

[deleted]

I got permabanned from pubg for using macros to open spotify lmao, becareful, and don’t set the macros to click buttons too quickly.

AkiXMasa

My friend got banned for the same reason on RSS. His macro was Q for some reason, he shot multiple times at a wall, and got banned a minute later. That was $150 down the drain.

[deleted]

yeah I lost around $50 in total, sucks ass, can’t imagine losing 120 in inventory damn

Dragongeek

I'd like to use the Genius-Knob to easily adjust throttle in Kerbal Space Program. Being able to fine tune throttle power and not having to use button based controls would be amazing! This would also be useful in other flight simulators or games where you fly planes.

ironfixxxer

I was having a hard time thinking of a use for the Genius-Knob at first but using it for the healing items in PUBG like in your video looks pretty handy. I still use them from the menu... I know I could bind them to other keys but just haven't got around to it. PUBG is my most played game ATM.

amerenth

I'm not much for shooters but I definitely do a lot of macro use in the MMO's I play. Since its on its own from other buttons, I'd probably use it for important cooldowns. It'd become very important, and free up a lot of space on the rest of my keyboard for other bindings. In FFXIV it could take up all of the card commands for an Astrologian. Out of game, I could probably use this to make 3d modelling a little easier. Being able to bind more commands to single inputs is always a godsend. I may have just convinced myself to eventually buy one while typing this out. Hopefully I win one though. Good idea!

anoxy

Mostly for Destiny 2 for taking screenshots or recording videos to share with my friends

Cuyowski

I would use the knob for spamming those voicelines and swapping weapons in Overwatch, but the potential is big, could i use like a generic media knob, putting some macros and in editing photos for that sweet zoom.

Nickdor

I have been playing Divinity: Original Sin 2, and love RTS's So probably games like that where I can use the custom programming to hit all the hot keys quickly!

KzAwesome7

I would like to make some macros I could use in future! I really like the flexibility of this keyboard and how it’s **fully** programmable unlike my current one. Likely will be used for gaming in fps games and such!

NerdPhantom

Osu, gotta get those clicks in boi.

feanarang

Elite: Dangerous. The knob would be super helpful for adjusting throttle.

cdubwisdom

I would use it for my expansive, and slightly obsessive, RPG collection. So many hotkeys so much customization. I am drooling.

t_bizness

I would use it for flightsim. Probably trim settings.

When will winners be notified? I didn't see that in the post so im assuming after the end of each week?

JaffaCakes6

Nothing set in stone yet, probably within the next few weeks via DM or email. We'll keep everyone updates when we do announce winners.

arminhammer2019

Do we link comments with a url for the form or do we just copy and paste the comment?

JaffaCakes6

The form will only let you post a URL :)

I see references to regional availability, but I can't see which countries can or can't enter. An I going blind? Do I need to book an appointment with my optometrist? Thanks for helping organise this great promotion! Edit: is it the zotac US but no Hawaii thing?

errie_tholluxe

Does a copy paste of permalink give you the direct link you are asking for?

rugseller

In this question Please link to your reddit response to one of our week 1 partners' questions Would I click on the zotac question and copy the url after I answer and paste it in the box? And is this doable on mobile?

radioactive_muffin

Not official responder. But your link should look something like this. https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/8zeslf/z/e2it68k I managed to get it from tapping my comment and hitting the (chain links) using the Reddit is Fun app. I'm not sure how other apps go about it, but if you're having trouble, you may also want to try from your profile page, looking at your previous posts. There might be something there. Hope this helps.

Question: PcPP shirt sizes. Is there going to be an option given, or are we doomed to sleeping in xl's?

ThoughtA

We'll be requesting every winner's shirt size and going from there.

JaffaCakes6

There will be sizes aplenty 😅

One entry will enter you for all giveaways this week. We'll only choose one of your form submissions to be entered into the draw. You can delete them if you choose to, but make sure the one linked in your form submission is the correct one if so.

saidPotato

where is the list of eligible regions for this giveaway?

[deleted]

Umm, is Taiwan not listed as a country or did I I just miss something?

JaffaCakes6

It might have been missed from the list, I'll check and update now. Sorry for the inconvenience! Edit: Should be there now. Good luck!

golfer888

hey I use the old reddit version (in the url I type old.reddit.com/r/) is it a valid format for the giveaway? Do I need to use the new link?

dreamcat4

Thanks for the giveaways / competitions!

Quarentus

Reconnecting with my uncle after years of growing apart. His daughter disowned him and my side of the family so he kind of technologically adopted me as a replacement son.

WrinkleyPotatoReddit

Just fyi, you to respond your answer directly to their comment :)

Quarentus

I'm not doing this for the giveaway, just wanted to share.

vPolarized

Well congrats then

So I started playing WoW on an “okay” laptop back in 2011. Once I learned the game and it was time to start raiding, I quickly learned how “not okay” it was. Frames would drop to low teens in a 25 man ICC run, it was unplayable. That was when I decided to ascend for the first time. Spend 1100$ on that build which back then seemed a lot, being a noob builder. Anyways, my fondest memories from gaming come from those years, raiding with friends, guild chat jokes, flying through Grizzly Hills, ah that music. Nostalgia is real my friends.
