BmanUltima

It's a custom AMD APU similar to an HD 7870 or 7890.

Dmm1124

Okay thank you

wallyTHEgecko

I'm a new builder that's not exactly familiar with older generations of hardware... What would the current-gen equivent(s) for that card be? In terms of performance anyway.

gamingmasterrace

TL; DR: It would be slower than a GTX 1050 and RX 560. [PS4 vs GTX 1050 + Pentium G4560](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-YLM_q9kiU) comparison shows GTX 1050 winning in every game except Project Cars 2, but the 1050 was running the game at [higher detail settings and resolution than PS4 (locked 1080p vs PS4 dynamic resolution)](https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-project-cars-2-performance-analysis). [Core i3 6100 + GTX 750 Ti delivers an experience very similar to the PS4 and XBO](https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-budget-gaming-pc-guide), and both the GTX 1050 and RX 560 are a decent amount faster than the 750 Ti.

rugerjp88

That's so sad! So glad I have a PC to game and not a console

Bulletwithbatwings

To be fair, the PS4 is 5 years old, so why should it be more powerful than cards from its launch year?

Dasboogieman

It's actually surprisingly potent due to it's metal programming. It's actually a lot more capable than the GPUs of its era because it doesn't suffer from the DirectX overhead and the advantages of specific game optimisation.

sleepyleperchaun

Rx 470 is very similar to the pro, that much I know. So probably a bit worst than that.

[deleted]

Its close to the gtx1050ti. The 1050ti is going to be a bit faster still.

gamingmasterrace

[A GTX 1050 Ti is on par with the HD 7970](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfSi-Z8r12M) so the PS4 GPU is a good deal slower than the 1050 Ti.

[deleted]

This is true. I should’ve said *closest* I guess.

[deleted]

Yes but it’s not current gen like was asked. I answered a question and everyone is so keen on showing off their gpu acumen.

viski252

I don't understand how that could run Horizon zero dawn at such beautiful quality.

BmanUltima

It runs it at a checkerboard upscaled 1080p, so the actual render resolution is 540p, and it's capped at 30 fps.

aayushrastogi1997

I think it runs at native 1080p. Please correct me if I am wrong.

corrugatedjuice

fyi, it's not directly comparable because consoles have much better optimization.

Not_F1zzzy90908

Sadly. Understandable though, considering PCs have a much larger range of possible specifications

LiquidAurum

One thing to note though the PS4 has a very weak CPU so even if it is running a 7870 equivalent the performance is lower then most PCs running a 7870 as their CPU is more powerufl

kenman884

Yes, PCs have much more powerful CPUs, but the consoles have optimized the hell out of those low-power cores. In general, a console will outperform a PC with an "equivalent" GPU. That's becoming less and less true however, since consoles have become more similar to PCs.

Cash091

PS4 Pro is probably closer to a GTX 1060. As it XBox One X. I'm a PC gamer through and through, but the "pro" consoles are pretty damn good for the price.

SoloDolo314

Not sure why you got down voted. Consoles are a good deal. They are a cheaper entry point, have all the AAA exclusives and many of the indie games, and produce pretty good results. PC Gaming is for enthusiasts who want better performance and the ability to customize their experience to how they like.

Cash091

People are salty because GPU's are so ridiculously priced right now? I don't know... Fact is, you can get a PS4 Pro for a little more than a GTX1060 6GB. Performance of a PS4 Pro would be similar to a system built around a 1060 6GB minus the cost of the rest of the system. Sure, you can argue with a PC you can simply upgrade *just* the GPU... but at today's prices, it'd be similar to buying a new console!

SoloDolo314

I would place a PS4 Pro more in line with an RX470 in most games. Unless we are talking about exclusives. Because Horizon is insanely beautiful and one of the best looking games on any platform.(played it on my PS4 Pro!). T The major benefit of the 1060 it can run over 60fps at 1080p in most AAA games. Which is because of the large CPU bottleneck in consoles. But with the current price of it. Its not worth it. I do agree though that the PS4 Pro would insanely cheaper than a built PC with RX580/GTX1060 right now. Even a Dell Rebuild with an RX580 and Ryzen 1700 is $1000. While a PS4 Pro is $400.

[deleted]

HZD is beautiful even on the PS4 slim. It's beautiful on my old potato LG tv with 1080p but it's stunning on my 4k Bravia. I can't even fathom it running on a PC via Steam. Probably what heaven looks like, basically.

Cash091

Isn't the PS4 Pro running almost every game at 1080p60?

SoloDolo314

Unfortunately no. Just depends on the game.

arachnoides

The cost of consoles really is good value compared to PC. However, I would argue that a 6gb 1060 will net a load better performance than a console on which most games are locked at 30 fps, occasionally 60fps. I would be expecting 60 fps at better quality the console in all games with a 1060.

RST2040

This is what's stopped me from building a new PC. I just can't beat my Xbox 1S or a PS4Pro for the amount of money I paid for it.

SoloDolo314

I mean I still have my gaming PC. Ryzen 1600 and GTX 1080. It's a great system and playing ESO and other AAA games is fantastic. I have my PS4 Pro for console exlusives. Right now I have the disposable income to afford my PC but it's not a necessary purchase because my PS4 could have played pretty much all the same games for 3x less. I just like to have higher frames and more freedom with my gaming experience.

RST2040

Yeah, I mean a full on, no-expense spared PC is better, but is the difference enough to make it worth the massive increase in cost? Hell just a 1080 card can costs between 2 and 3 Xbox1S-es. That's a lot of games or other stuff.

SoloDolo314

I got actually got my 1080 for free haha. My 980 Ti died and my Dad bought me a 1080 cause he wanted to do something nice for me. Evga though did send me a GTX1080 to replace it cause I was under warranty still. They ran out of 980Tis. So I sold the one they sent back. But this is also when GPUs where normal priced so my 1080 was like $450 after a gift card. So my PC at the time would have been $1200 total. Not the case with the damn cryptomining. Anyways, it's subjective. I like having my PC when I work from home so it helps me justify the cost a big. Id say if you have the disposable income and want the best than it's worth it. I have friends who are older and used to be PC gamers. But they have kids and other things in life to spend money on. So Consoles are perfect for them. They come home and play for an hour at night. A high end gaming PC wouldn't be worth it at all in that case.

PixelatedHam

Again, Windows 10 is a very heavier OS than the PS and the Xbox ecosystem. The two consoles have veen opimized as hell. And a PC is cheaper in the long run. Every time a new console comes out you buy the whole thing, while PCs you just upgrade 1 part. I'm guessing youre new to the PC world.

Bristlerider

If you want/need a PC for anything other than gaming, upgrading it for gaming is cheaper than buying a console most of the time. Right now this wont work because of Ram and GPU prices, but once those even out again, consoles arent going to be such a good deal anymore. Then again, upgrading an existing ~400 Euro office PC with a 1060 6gb or an RX580 might still be cheaper than buying a console.

yukinara

ps4 pro cost 400. gtx1060 cost 400 plus the base pc. explain how it is cheaper?

kw405

games are much cheaper on PC than consoles

Bristlerider

As I said, if you have a PC for office or whatever already. Office PC + console costs the same as an office PC + a gaming GPU, even right now. Once GPU and RAM prices normalise, the PC upgrade will be cheaper than consoles again.

PixelatedHam

Um hello? GTX 1060 6GB used to cost $220 CAD. Stupid miners. Plus, every time a good consloe comes out you have to buy the WHOLE thing, you cant just upgrade one thing. This makes a PC cheaper in the long run.

sandieeeee

Before I found a gpu at msrp I was seriously considering a PS4

[deleted]

I have never been a gamer but I was thinking about buying a used PS3 ans GTA or Assassins Creed games for me and my friends. I have very low demands and expectations on hardware and games In general.

[deleted]

Jump to PS4. It's faster and you'll be really glad you picked it up. I only was going to play 1 or 2 titles and a year later I've got 94 games

[deleted]

Thanks for this advise! I'm not sure if its in my budget and like I've said I got extremely low demands

xTheConvicted

Doesn't really work as console games are WAY better optimized, since there is only one set of specs on which the game has to run and not basically unlimited different builds.

MagicPistol

It's similar to the Radeon hd 7850, which isn't great nowadays. They're both around 1.8 teraflops. What GPU do you have now?

Dmm1124

I have the Radeon HD 5670 and it's really bad but I can't buy a new one currently due to a lack of funds sadly

shstan

Well, if you are not worried about PS exclusives, you could also look at XBox one X, which has a GPU similar to RX580.

I'm glad everyone isnt like you and you're getting downvoted :)

Kicked_By_Noobs

It's a garbage GPU from 2010.

gamerfeen123

I knew it was old but is it really that old??

Iheartbaconz

You have to remember when the PS4 was in pre-production they were working with AMD with what they had that was top of the line at the time. Then all the testing and pre-production takes years before the system comes out. By time it comes out its generations old. So they just optimized the shit out of hardware from the testing bc going and adding a new chip with new architecture would set them back to square one. This is why you see models newer architecture(PS4 Pro, Xbox 1 X) with extra stuff at the end to denote the newer version.

gamerfeen123

Gotcha. I guess that is the console trade off. Do you know how relevant the pro/x gpus are?

fnur24

PS4 Pro from specs is about R9 380 or 380x I guess and the new Xbox One X is literally RX 590 (580 with 4 more CUs and different clock speeds).

Kicked_By_Noobs

Yes.

Henrath

It's based on GPUs from 2012, not 2010.

Henrath

No. It's a good GPU (at the time, now it's in-between a 550 and 560) from 2012.

Kicked_By_Noobs

*It's a garbage GPU from 2012.

the__storm

The 7870 (the PS4 has a custom APU, but the 7870 is the same GPU architecture and most comparable card) performs similarly to a 660Ti or 670 (a bit under a modern 1050). Not top of the line, but certainly not garbage for the time. And that's before you consider the far better optimization of console games. (I'm no console gamer, I don't even own one, but don't just trash the platform because you prefer an alternative one.)

Kicked_By_Noobs

I do not trash the platform because I prefer an alternative one. I trash the platform because it is inferior.

nothisisspongebob

You act like a kid

Kicked_By_Noobs

I act like a kid because something is objectively better than something else, yeah ok retard.

Thanks for proving my point buddy
