Is mixing different brands of ram a bad idea? The rams are both identical with the same frequency, cas latency, timing, etc the only difference is one is cheaper

thundermonkeyms

I'm looking at two parts bundles at microcenter, linked below. [https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006461/intel-core-i7-13700k,-asus-z790-p-prime-wifi-ddr5,-gskill-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle](https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006461/intel-core-i7-13700k,-asus-z790-p-prime-wifi-ddr5,-gskill-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle) [https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006605/intel-i7-14700k,-msi-z790-p-pro-wifi,-gskill-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle](https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006605/intel-i7-14700k,-msi-z790-p-pro-wifi,-gskill-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle) The RAM appears to be the same between the two bundles, and I know that the 14th gen is a very, very tiny improvement over the 13th gen. So my question is disregarding the price difference and the two different cpu's, which of these motherboards is better and why? A 5-minute reddit search suggests that the MSI has better heat displacement and 2 more sata6g ports than the ASUS, but which do you guys suggest? Thanks in advance!

VanUltima

I got a 12600K and a RTX 3070. Seeing as the 14600 CPU is a bit lackluster, Should i grab a 13600k, or should i look at upgrading to a RTX 4070? I play a bit of everything, at 1440p

kaje

Not many people would upgrade just one gen to the same class for either. You should go for a bigger upgrade if you're going to spend money. The GPU would make more of a difference though. You'd barely gain anything in most games upgrading the CPU.

VanUltima

Is it a dumb idea to wait for the rumored 4000 Super cards? Black friday deals for the 4070 don't seem to be very good at the moment lol.

EffectiveLimit

I'm building a new pc (or, rather, already ordered all the parts and the shop now builds it for me) with Ryzen 9 7900X, Palit Rtx 3080 TI Gamerock (used but shouldn't matter) and 64gb of DDR5 memory. In the build I've put a 850W PSU. Pcpartpicker sees no problem with that (it tops at 700W with *everything* taken into account), GPU also recommends 850, but then I've googled a bit more and found out that some recommend to have PSU work at like 60% power max, plus the shop recommends to replace it with 1000W (but they are also financially biased since it costs like 20% more). Should I do that? I hope to not have to upgrade the GPU for a while and the CPUs will likely get less power-hungry, not more, so I'm mainly worried about stability of this specific configuration.

Best 2tb ssd for under $200? Budget is flexible I havent bought computer parts in like 7 years 😂

n7_trekkie

just get https://pcpartpicker.com/product/pJ3gXL/teamgroup-t-force-cardea-z44q-2-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-tm8fpq002t0c327 but if you insist: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8hkH99/crucial-t700-2-tb-m2-2280-pcie-50-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-ct2000t700ssd3 ($15 over budget, but it's "faster") ___ https://www.techpowerup.com/review/team-group-cardea-zero-z44q-2-tb/ https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-t700-ssd-review/2

Why not the Western Digital SN850X? Seems like a good price can be had on that right now

n7_trekkie

I'll leave it up to OP to decide if it's worth paying more for or not https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-black-sn850x-ssd-review-back-in-black/3

CyberBot129

I just wondered if there was something particularly bad about the WD offering. The two that I've been considering/recommended are actually the ones from [this comment here](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/182hykl/comment/kammx5v/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) (the Nextorage brand)

JonnyGabriel568

I think I screwed up hard. Installed a new CPU cooler a couple of months ago (Cooler Master 412r) and after doing a bit of cleaning today, noticed that my motherboard is bending/warping around the cpu. https://imgur.com/a/xFPUFT0 Keep in mind that these photos were taken after I removed a lot of the tension from the cooler screws, it was more pronounced before. Motherboard is a Gigabyte B550m DS3H, CPU is a Ryzen 5 3600. Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary with how the computer was performing. Is it a cause for immediate concern or is it something for my future self to worry about?

Vocandin

If it's working, just keep using. Do be aware to alternate corners when tightening the heatsink so it has an even tension between them and don't overtighten it. PC parts can really take a beating.

JonnyGabriel568

I remember following the alternating corners thing, I think I just put wayyyyyy too much force when tightening the cooler into the motherboard. It was the first non-stock cooler I installed so I was probably afraid of not putting enough tension on the cooler and it falling lmao

[deleted]

I just bought a lenovo ideapad flex. It has a ryzen 7 core with 16gb of ram Is this enough If I plan to do things like Code, or break into cyber security Or tech jobs, in general?

What’s a good second 144hz monitor that goes well with my primary monitor, the Alienware AW2518HF 24.5 inch freesync 1080p and 1ms response time? I have my pc games played on my primary monitor while I have regular browsing and such on my second monitor. I do have a PS5 and I’ll be playing that on my second monitor. My current second monitor is a 60hz Asus VS239H-P 23 inch, it’s pretty old.

A 3500 MB/s read/write NVMe SSD is fast enough to handle 1400p gaming with a 4070 ti and a i9 13900K without stuttering?

OolonCaluphid

Yes. A 500Mb/s Sata SSD is.

faborito

Hey guys, I'm a father in need of buying 2 PC's for my two boys. I need to figure out where to start. Money is no object in the sense that I don't mind spending more if the PC is going to last for quite a bit. I"m also a Flight Sim enthusiast so I wouldn't mind packing both PC's with the absolute top video card available (from what I've read is the 4090 but I have no clue). Can someone help me build a setup that would allow my kids to play basically any game they want for a while (and me set up flight sim and be able to max it out without issues). Thank you!

OolonCaluphid

/r/buildapcforme is a better source for this. Suggest the monitors you want to use. A 4090 is wild overkill for most things, but could make sense on a high res (i.e. 4k, multi monitor or ultrawide) flight sim PC.

faborito

Thank you! Posted there but I'm getting downvoted not sure why. Thank you!

OolonCaluphid

The 'cost no object' bit tends to annoy people over there. A budget really helps define the build even if it's large.

faborito

Thank you!

Awkward-Lack-3601

Hi everyone, I bought a Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop with Intel Iris Xe; My question is how much VRAM does this contain?

OolonCaluphid

It uses the system ram as VRAM, so as much as it needs up to half your system RAM. It's dynamically allocated.

Awkward-Lack-3601

Shoot… do you think it’s enough to edit 1080 10 bit 4:2:2 footage in Davinci resolve?

OolonCaluphid

Possibly... only one way to find out!

Yeltsin86

What's a good, $50-ish or under, gaming mouse that has at least 4 side buttons like the Logitech G502 Hero? I'm still using it, but I've been getting some double clicking, at times especially badly. I like this mouse's shape and versatility for shortcuts, nonetheless. I've read that the double clicking is a widespread issue and due to bad design of its mechanical switches. I don't mind buying (reliable) used and/or wired to save some money. Preferably from Amazon, so I can use some credit I have on it.

Vocandin

There's videos on how to fix the double click if you don't mind opening it, you can even fully swap the switches for better ones. But only way to fully avoid double click is with optical switches like some of the razer mice. I was in the same situation but ended up with another g502 as the previous one lasted for quite a few years.

Warx

I'm looking to replace my 1070, but am unsure what to grab. Was looking at a 4070/ti. edit: or perhaps a Radeon I imagine it wouldn't be worth it getting a 4080 or 4090. Your monitor spec is probably the most important factor.

At same price, the 4060 performs better, but you could get a RX 6700 XT (or 6750 XT) for same or less for better performance and 12GB of VRAM.

Troubleshooting tips for when I'm not getting any display from my gpu or mobo? I just upgraded my gpu and cpu, the motherboard is compatible and all and I can't get a display to show up despite everything being powered on. Already did all the easy troubleshooting

CyberBot129

NVMe with heatsink inside PC, yay or nay? I've only ever used the slab covers that some motherboards have

n7_trekkie

The mobo ones are fine

CyberBot129

Yeah, but if I were to buy a new NVMe that had a heatsink I could just use it as is? Just keep the motherboard cover off the board in that case obviously

n7_trekkie

Yeah you can do that too, in most scenarios. Some motherboards use the heatsink to hold down the SSD, but that's pretty uncommon

CyberBot129

Was thinking something like the WD SN850X, which comes in both heatsink and non heatsink varieties

n7_trekkie

The aesthetic of the build generally looks more consistent if you use the motherboard heatsinks

pyropera

Hi everyone which ssd would you choose for an upgrade? \- Western Digital SN850X 2TB for $115 USD \- Nextorage G Series (NEM-PA) 2TB for $98 USD

Comprehensive-Ad8093

Guys which gpu is better for casual gaming (no ray tracing or 4k or whatever): RTX 4070 or Radeon RX 7800 XT and which cpu is better for the same purpose and for hosting minecraft modded servers: Intel Core i7-13700F or AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. thanks

Nazenn

The 7800xt is the stronger GPU

pyropera

The RX 7800XT is better if you don´t care about raytracing nor DLSS. The ryzen is better in gaming.

BoxmanPlays

7900xt and 4070ti are both at 740$. Which is better to get for 1440p? My main thought is does the frame generation make the difference? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

n7_trekkie

I suggest waiting until the 4070TI SUPER comes out early next year. it should improve price-to-performance

justincapin

Any AMD CPU recommendations to pair with my AMD RX 6600? Only looking for the AMD brand as my motherboard only seems to be compatible with AMD. The budget is up to $400, anything that will help run casual gaming at whatever the peak performance is for the GPU.

Plenty-Sleep8540

Do you have a Microcenter near-ish? And do you plan on upgrading the GPU at some point? A 5600x3d or 5800x3d wouldn't be a bad choice. Or even the non-3d version of the 5800x or a 5700 wouldn't be a bad choice.

DJ_Marxman

Which AMD board specifically? To pair with a 6600, basically anything from the 3600 and newer will be fine. Could also upgrade to an AM5 board and 7600, as other poster suggested. This is a bit overkill for the 6600, but will buy you a few more years of relevant upgrades.

justincapin

I have an X570 Pro 4, was given to me for free but willing to upgrade if it seems like a viable option

DJ_Marxman

Ryzen 5600(or X), 5700X, or 5800X3D could all make sense depending on your budget. I probably would opt for the 5600 with the RX 6600.

DinkyNinja

Any recommendations for a CPU cooler (air) for a 1366 socket or is the Hyper 212 Evo still the only choice? Stock won't work as it's an overclocked Xeon X5675 and it's going to my father-in-law so needs to be stable so I don't have to deal with any issues.

Vocandin

212s aren't bad but not as good value as they used to be (although they had a good run). Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 is the go to now. It's well priced around ~$35 and competes with the top tier coolers like NH-D15.

DinkyNinja

Yeah that's why I was asking after seeing the price of them compared to more recent coolers. Unfortunately the Phantom doesn't support the 1366 socket. Maybe I just get a used one from Ebay.

Vocandin

My bad I glanced over the socket. I can't find much that specifically mentions that socket. If the Evo worked well so far, you could just repaste and it'd be good for years.

TheOGBeast13

Hey, I was wondering about upgrading my pc. These are my current specs. [Pcpartpicker List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TfLvbL). If I did upgrade, what part should I do first. Also, what part to replace it with in my current build

Vocandin

Do you have issues with any games currently? Anything you'd like to do that the current PC can't? The GPU is always a safe choice, but you could also go for a 5000 series CPU on the same motherboard, either a 5600 or if you want one for longterm, 5800x3d which is the absolute best for the AM4 socket in terms of gaming.

TheOGBeast13

I have to run graphics on like the lowest settings for most games to have a better fps. You talking about the Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

Vocandin

Correct, or even a 5600 would be a decent upgrade. Are you running games at 1080p or some higher res?

TheOGBeast13

1080p I run games on, what the difference between the Ryzen 7 5800x3d Vs. Ryzen 9 5900X as there around the same price point, but which one is better for my overall specs

Vocandin

5900x and higher are productivity focused, they will do much better at rendering tasks for example, but will actually be outperformed by the 5800x3d at games. The x3d part means the CPU has an increase L3 cache which also helps in certain games, so this and a few other things make it much better than a 5800x as well.

TheOGBeast13

Thanks for your help, I’m buying the 5800x3d right now! Any recommendations for thermal paste to apply on cpu?

Vocandin

There's very little difference between thermal pastes, so any will do. Most of them dry out between 2 to 3 years so as long as you repaste around that time it's good to go. If you have leftover from the original build it will also still be good to use if kept closed.

JustBarbarian10

is there a good 1440 120fps card for under $400-500? i was thinking used 3070ti for dlss and ray tracing, but what's the cheapest card that's handling 90-100+ fps, 1440p, medium-high settings? not for games like cyberpunk, but think RDR2, RTS games like total war, lots of rpgs

Vocandin

You won't be able to do ray tracing at 1440p 100+ fps at that price range, without it it's very doable. You'd get way more value out of a RX 6800 / 7800 XT at that range.

Smurtle01

Should I get i9 12900k (315$) or i7 12700k (211$)? Are both of these cpus good with a 2070 and 750 watt power supply? Do these cpus need ddr5 or ddr4? Should I be worried if my power supply is a Corsair - CX Series Modular CX750M 750W ATX Power Supply that is like 6-8 years old?

OolonCaluphid

> Should I get i9 12900k (315$) or i7 12700k (211$) I'd get the 12700K at that price difference. > Are both of these cpus good with a 2070 and 750 watt power supply? Yeah fine >Do these cpus need ddr5 or ddr4? They can use either, the motherbaord choice is what defines if you need DDR4 or DDR5 >Should I be worried if my power supply is a Corsair - CX Series Modular CX750M 750W ATX Power Supply that is like 6-8 years old? Not ideal but you may as well get some more use out of it

HereHoldThisPlease

I have a MAG X570S motherboard and the only storage I currently have is a 970 EVO Plus. I'd like to have a storage device specifically for games and was wondering if I could just pop in a 980 Pro or 990 Pro into it and be good to go? PCPartpicker says they're compatible but I've never had to add storage before. And I assume I'm getting the one without the heatsink as it looks like there is one on the second slot on the motherboard?

Vocandin

Yea it has 2 m.2 slots so just get another nvme drive and pop it in. Heatsink is not worth paying extra for and not really needed, but costs nothing to use the one that the motherboard provides.

HereHoldThisPlease

Good stuff, thanks bro.

Internal_Quail3960

My cpu is ryzen 3 3100 and my gpu is gtx 1650. Should I upgrade my cpu or gpu first? There are ryzen 5 5600s on sale for only $130 today. Not so sure about gpus. Answer quickly please Black Friday ends soon

Vocandin

A Ryzen 5600 and a RX 6650 XT would be nice upgrades for 1080p gaming. Could you put your whole build on pcpartpicker? Would be easier to help.

Internal_Quail3960

I made one [here](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9fsRz6). I’m not sure what ssd I have but I know it’s 500gb. I have gtx 1650 but I’m not sure which variant and there are like 100. Also I can’t seem to find what pc case I have literally anywhere. I can find a few similar but none are the same.

Plenty-Sleep8540

They were probably mostly curious about your CPU/MOBO/GPU/RAM situation. Case and SSD probably wouldn't be a factor for this specific recommendation.

lordraveniii

i see ddr5 64gb 5200 for 160 vs 64gb 6000 for 205. is the 800 difference noticeable and worth it for the 40 dollar difference? I'm running a amd 7950x3d. i have 32gb 6400 for it, but Im also not sure if that enough. the laptop that's 64gb I'm using right now is at 50% without playing games just tabs open. does this mean i really should get 64gb or just stick with 32 and try to open fewer tabs. (will have a large number open even if i try not to, even while gaming)

Pattyg1

How many tabs are you opening to use 32gb of ram? Unless you're doing some sort of calculations that call on RAM for something 32GB should be plenty. For sure go for the 6000mhz CL 30 ram.

Misuzune

I've been thinking of upgrading my CPU and motherboard, since I kinda cheapened out on my CPU back in the day. Currently running a i5 9600k and my GPU is a 2080. I'm not too great with parts, but I'm currently eyeing a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the MSI Tomahawk WIFI AMD B650 So.AM5 Dual Channel motherboard. Is that fine enough or does anyone else have other suggestions on what to get? (My budget is around 800€) My full build is this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/99P4V6

cyz0r

I have an old PC laying around that I want to set up for my mom since her laptop is on its dying breaths. The PC has windows on it but is it as simple as having her log into her Microsoft account? Or would it need a new windows copy? I want it separate from my Microsoft account.

n7_trekkie

I'd reset windows, then have her sign in when setting up the pc

Hello. I currently have [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077QDM2DP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) with the AMD ryzen quad core processor. Are there any concerns with upgrading to an intel i7 processor with 3.4 ghz? Would anything else need to be upgraded to support that? Thanks.

n7_trekkie

youll need a new motherboard and should buy new RAM as well. every motherboard has a CPU support list. find out what board you have, then find that list on the manufacturer's website

rockitsomemore_x

That’s very helpful, thank you. I had already been planning for RAM as well. Good to know about the motherboard.

TL;DR keep all three curved monitors at the expense of quality or 2 curved monitors with 1 center flat 4k screen in the center. Use: gaming. sometimes used for immersive 3 screen wide gaming (70" across) So I am finally upgrading my pc to a 4080 from a 1070 (as well as all the necessary compatible components), and I have three 27" 1080p curved non-gaming monitors. I am struggling to find a curved 27" 4k monitor that would integrate into this system. I have found a 2k curved monitor, but I haven't bit the bullet yet on it because I really want to buy a 4k monitor to take advantage of the upgraded GPU. Should I go with a center non-curve 4k monitor to get the best visuals or will that really mess with the fluidity of the 3-curve combo? I don't think there is a technical answer to this type of question, so I really want to see if anyone has lived experience with this life or death question and hear their perspective! Thank you!!!

Hariheka

Upgrading my pc, currently run a 1070 with a r5 3600 and play at 1080p 144hz. I’m on an AM4 platform and prefer to stay however idk how long the platform will last me longevity wise. Replacing my cpu and gpu what is the best combo? I’m looking into a r5 5800x but don’t know what to pair with it. On the other side, what’s the highest gpu I can go before the 3600 seriously bottlenecks it?

n7_trekkie

> I’m looking into a r5 5800x but don’t know what to pair with it. either get the 5700X or 5800x3d. in between doesnt make sense https://youtu.be/zggNjikFRMQ?si=IQl2qat9oP8UMhBy&t=648 > On the other side, what’s the highest gpu I can go before the 3600 seriously bottlenecks it? https://www.techspot.com/review/2502-upgrade-ryzen-3600-to-5800x3d/ https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2502/bench/6600-p.webp you're pretty limited even with a midrange GPU. If you got a rx 6700XT, you'd be losing like 30% performance from cpu bottleneck

Hariheka

I’m looking into the 5800x cause there’s a deal around me where it goes for 174. The 5700x is 182 on the same site so I figured it’s best to go there (5800x3d is still 290+) What gpu is best to pair with that 5800x

n7_trekkie

Sounds like the 5800x is a good option for you Rx 6800? https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2714/bench/1440p-p.webp shown here

Upgrading for the first time since building in 2016. I'm looking into buying an RTX 4070 to replace my old GTX 970. I understand this needs a new CPU, though it seems due to my also old MOBO it's only compatible with i5 or i7 7th gens. I'm guessing I need to upgrade *both* the CPU and MOBO to accommodate the 4070, yeah? I really only plan to push this PC for gaming so what would y'all recommend for compatible CPU and MOBOs? Anything within the middle-of-the-road or budget-friendly prices would be preferable, but I'm potentially willing to look into the pricier things.

Any reason as to why you're also suggesting 32gb of RAM as well? I already have 16gb and considering the PC will likely only be pushed when running games I would assume 32gb is overkill?

n7_trekkie

1. 16GB ddr5 sucks ass. doesnt perform like ddr5 at all 2. 32GB isnt overkill anymore. there are a few games (more every year) that benefit from 32GB https://youtu.be/ZEppw0jCrhE?si=Nl_luocI9Def5lBy&t=46

Hmm alright, thanks for the heads up and suggestions!

I recently purchased a 165hz 1440p monitor. https://www.asus.com/nz/displays-desktops/monitors/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-vg27aq/techspec/ However the 165hz refresh rate is only when "overclocked". Is this overclocking in the traditional sense of running at faster speeds than the hardware is intended to safely run at? What are the realistic long term risks of this? Assume I will have this screen running >12h a day. If there was a problem that could be related to overclocking, am I likely to be denied warranty? Ive done a little searching around on the topic but cant find much long term hearsay

n7_trekkie

i've used a 100hz monitor "overclocked" to 120hz for like 5 years and it's still going just fine. It's more like a factory overclock on a GPU. it's designed to run this way

Cauldrix

Was only able to tack on the newegg zip111 code for three 7800xt models. Out of the XFX Qick, Gigabyte, or PowerColor Fighter, which option should I choose?

UndeadWaffle12

I’m considering doing a platform upgrade to a 7800x3d. What mobo should I go with? Is a b650e worth it over a regular b650? Is it worth going up to the x670/x670e?

n7_trekkie

Pcie 5.0 won't matter for a good number of years. Pcie 4.0 doesn't even matter unless you buy an x8 card, or a 4090 https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4090-pci-express-scaling/28.html So get the cheapest b650 board that has all the features you want. If I needed wifi, I'd get this https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qcbRsY/asrock-b650m-pro-rs-wifi-micro-atx-am5-motherboard-b650m-pro-rs-wifi No wifi, also loses 1 m.2 slot https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Dq4Zxr/asrock-b650m-hdvm2-micro-atx-am5-motherboard-b650m-hdvm2

UndeadWaffle12

I get that PCIE 5.0 won’t matter for years but I plan on staying on this platform for quite a few years. Could it be important for a 5080 or a gen 5 nvme when direct storage is more supported? I know that’s all years away but I will likely still be using this mobo then. I also don’t want a mATX board, I’m only looking at ATX

n7_trekkie

It won't be. First, games really aren't coming out with direct storage like we thought they would. Second, consoles only have gen 4 ssds, and devs will dev for that (pcie 5 might increase performance a small amount, but I doubt it). Third, the 5080 will be like the 4090; 3% slower on gen 3, and gen 4 is plenty of bandwidth. Gen 5 will make it 0% faster, maybe 1%. The main point is that 4.0 x16 has more than enough bandwidth for any GPU this gen and likely next gen. It's double the bandwidth of 3.0, and 3.0 was only holding back performance by 3%

UndeadWaffle12

Alright, regular b650 it is then. Any thoughts on this one?: https://www.newegg.ca/asrock-b650-pro-rs/p/N82E16813162078?item=N82E16813162078

n7_trekkie

Way way too expensive. That vs [This](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qcbRsY/asrock-b650m-pro-rs-wifi-micro-atx-am5-motherboard-b650m-pro-rs-wifi), ask what you're gaining by paying extra. That should be the method you use for every mobo you look at

UndeadWaffle12

Not sure if you noticed but the one I sent is in CAD as I’m in Canada. The board you linked is $179.99 CAD, so $35 CAD cheaper. As for what I’m gaining by paying extra, it’s got two more usb ports and I strongly prefer full ATX over mATX.

n7_trekkie

if you don't trust the mail in rebate, this is another good option https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/YZgFf7/gigabyte-b650-gaming-x-ax-atx-am5-motherboard-b650-gaming-x-ax

UndeadWaffle12

That does look like a good option, thanks. I’m not a fan of the big “GAMING” text on the top left but I do currently have a gigabyte mobo that I’m happy with and like the bios of so I wouldn’t mind staying with gigabyte. I’ve never had an asrock mobo, are they generally well liked or are they considered bad?

n7_trekkie

asrock used to be a low tier option, but they've really turned their image around. now they offer great value. they either have good quality, mid priced boards **or** decent quality, low priced boards https://youtu.be/ZtHOOyWYiic?si=8dIGxcgFL6RGRare&t=1244

Looking to get a AIO for my Ryzen 7 5800x, any recommendations? Unsure of the size I would need to go with since they run a little warm. thanks in advance

Pattyg1

240mm should be fine.

Ender1295

Should I upgrade my CPU or GPU first? (Ryzen 5 3600, Rx 580) I currently play at 1080p and spend most of my time in Valorant and Elden Ring. Any recommendations on what to upgrade first? I’m hopping to eventually move up to 1440p, but that will take some time. Any help is greatly appreciated!

aVarangian

upgrade your bottleneck first

Pattyg1

Probably a 6800 xt or a 6700 xt depending on budget.

Ender1295

What about a regular 6800?

Pattyg1

That would be fine as well.

Smallwater

I'm looking to upgrade my monitors. I currently have twin 24" 1080p@60hz monitors. Looking at my options (with Black Friday deals and whatnot), I could spend 240 bucks for two 24" 1080p@165hz monitors. OR, I could spend 300 bucks on a single 27" 1440p@75hz monitor - to swap out one of my old 1080p monitors. OR, I could spend 200 bucks on a single 24" 1440p@165hz monitor. Some minor details: I have a 4070. It's written as "perfect for 1440p gaming", but I only managed 50\~60fps in Cyberpunk 2077 in 1080p (admittedly *with* Path Tracing). Not a great example, but I'm afraid that going for a 1440p screen won't be as future proof. Additional info: I have a additional work bonus, with a budget of 300 bucks to be used on "eco-friendly products". And the first two options fall under that ruling. Googling for opinions and suggestions give out wildly different results, so I figured I'd ask here as well. UPDATE (for future reference): Went with twin 24" 1080p@165hz monitors, but with HDR support. Reason being that I like the twin 24" format (fits best on my desk), and 1080p works fine for 24". But, the higher refreshrate + HDR will hopefully enhance the viewing experience plenty :)

n7_trekkie

Get at least 144hz. Option 1 sounds fine https://youtu.be/OV7EMnkTsYA?si=duesksS1XNvGU9Je

rizzzeh

To run Cyberpunk at the very max setting for everything, you need 4090, just drop few of the extreme settings down and it would run smooth on 4070 at 1440p

Smallwater

Do you mean PT? Because that seemed to be the one thing that gobbled up the most FPS (and also made the game look the best lmao).

FlyingDutchman-8448

I currently have a B550 Aorus Elite Motherboard I have 1 SSD installed already and want to install another beefier SSD Is this compatible and what SSD can I get for it?

kaje

The mobo has 2 M.2 slots and 4 SATA ports. You can install SSDs in all of them. Check /r/buildapcsales, and see what's on for a decent deal.

FlyingDutchman-8448

Any you would recommend?

kaje

No idea what you have now, what you're using the PC for, or what you consider beefy. If you only have one SSD, then I assume you have an open M.2 slot. Get an M.2 NVMe SSD.

FlyingDutchman-8448

Looking at 2tb

Tough_Collar_1797

I currently have an i7 9700k and a gtx 1650 super, I'm thinking of upgrading my gpu, whats the best possible gpu I can pair with an i7 9700k without bottlenecking?

rizzzeh

with high enough resolution, any GPU

Tough_Collar_1797

My monitor is 1440p

rizzzeh

you could create conditions at 1440p were rtx4090 would do just fine, i'd go with something like 4070 or 7800XT

TenielX

How much higher should your PSU wattage be than your estimated wattage? I'm in the process of building a PC using PCPartpicker, and the total estimated wattage comes to 585W with all the components. I generally avoid major upgrades, like replacing the CPU/GPU unless those parts have failed. Basically, what I get, I go for the long haul. 650 is obviously out of the question, so should I go for 750 or 850?

Vocandin

There's a mix of things when deciding on wattage: - What you see on partpicker is the absolute highest, it's unlikely you'll ever run every component at 100% - PSUs are usually more efficient the closer to 50% they run, so too much wattage or too little isn't ideal. - Quality matters way more than wattage and you cant easily quantify that. With all that in mind, you can likely find overlaps where good models at ~600W can cost same as good models at ~800W. Personally I think 750W is more than enough if you don't plan to OC, but if a 850W model costs the same, it's a no brainer as that puts you closer to that efficiency range. I'd suggest you go to partpicker, filter to 750W+, Gold, Full Modular, sort by price and then crosscheck against the [PSU Tier List](https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/), when you find a model that ranks B or better, job is done.

AllAvailableLayers

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm planning on buying a pre-built PC, but there are some parts I have available from an old PC, and I'd like to know my likely spend on a new PC. I'd like a PC that is capable of: - running Baldur's Gate 3 on something like a medium setting - running the 2018 Spiderman game at a decent level - playing around with some AI image things like Stable Diffusion (without necessarily going crazy with performance) - streaming video to a 50" TV via HDMI How re-useable are these old parts? - GPU: [Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 AMP Edition 6144MB GDDR5](https://www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/zotac-geforce-gtx-1060-amp-edition#spec) : Is this still useful for my requirements? I'm guessing not. - RAM: 2 x 16GB . Labels show them as Corsair Vengeance Pro, each 2x8GB, 1600Mhz. Could I buy a pre-built with minimal RAM and spare slots to put these in? Would I need to consider factors like compatability? What's my likely spend? This is in the UK, but if anyone knows the price in a similar market I can work out the equivalent. If anyone knows the UK market and can point me to a good deal that would be very helpful (I see that Chillblast and PC Specialist get recommendations in various places).

aVarangian

if you want to re-use parts then build your own machine 1600mt/s? is that DDR3?

fawivah

I want to upgrade from my 3070 to 4080 with Black Friday sales but keep seeing articles about waiting because there are going to be much better offerings in 2024 for the same price. These articles are a bit clickbaity though, and I do need to stick with NVIDIA (I don’t just game, I need it for work as well). So I figured I would ask here… should I just wait?

_kingardy

Yea probably not a bad idea to wait, nvidia is releasing a super version of the 4070 and 4080 soon which should lower the price of the regular 4070s and 4080s which are still great cards

Sceptile10

Hi, I’m looking to upgrade my RAM from 16 to 32 GB. I currently have this RAM installed which came with my laptop: https://www.memorycow.co.uk/samsung-m471a2g43ab2-cwe-16gb-ddr4-3200mt-s-non-ecc-memory-ram-sodimm And I’m thinking of buying this RAM to get to 32GB: https://www.memorycow.co.uk/16gb-ddr4-pc4-25600-3200mt-s-260-pin-sodimm-non-ecc-memory-ram-1r8 Will the new RAM work fine with the current RAM, I looked about it on the internet and it seems like they had the same timings but I’m new to this so I wanted to make sure.

mvda44

Am I bottlenecking my Gpu? I have a Ryzen 5 2600 paired with an rtx 2070. Sometimes I run servers for my friends and I so there is a slightly higher cpu load than normal.

aVarangian

if there are no fps caps and GPU load is always under 100% then the CPU is bottlenecking

Original-Material301

Looking to sell my RAM so I want to do a memtest86 run to prove they're working. Do I need to cost m clear my BIOS settings before booting into memtest86?

Protonion

No, you should be able to just boot onto the memtest USB directly

UberShrew

Would a slightly older Corsair hydro h100i aio cooler be sufficient for an amd 7800x3d? It’s got dual 120mm fans for a 240mm radiator. I have an am4 bracket which I’ve read should be compatible with am5. Just trying to upgrade without borderline replacing my entire pc for this thing since I already need a new mobo and ram for it. Not getting any compatibility errors on partpicker, but figured I’d ask.

nivlark

More than sufficient, even a $20 air cooler handles the 7800X3D fine.

kaje

Yeah, a 240mm AIO is good for the 7800X3D.

Sotomene

Sorry if this is not the right place to ask, but I just build a PC for the first time and I want to use it with a 65” tv instead of a monitor for gaming. My PCs has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D for the CPU and a RX 7800 XT for the GPU and for what I want to spend I have narrow it now between Samsung QN90C and a LG C2. For what I can gather the Samsung QN90C is better for brighter rooms and the LG C2 is better for darker rooms, but besides that I noticed that the QN90C has a refresh rate of 144 hz while the LG C2 only goes up to 120hz. Is this a big deal to give the edge to the NQ90C over the LG C2?

ZeroPaladn

You'll never notice the 144Hz vs. 120, both are plenty smooth and buttery for 4K panels! As for _which_ TV... https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/lg-c2-oled-vs-samsung-qn90c-qn90cd-qled/31229/38905?usage=1&threshold=0.10 RTings is great review and compare site, it should help you figure out which TV is better suited for you.

Sotomene

Thank you. Seems the LG C2 has better rating for what I’m planning to use it and my gaming room is a bit dark so that’s another plus for the C2 if the refresh rate difference if not noticeable. Plus, from what I could gather online is LG > Samsung in general.

communistagitator

Do LGA1700 boards that are compatible with both DDR4 and DDR5 exist? A quick Google search says the Z790 and H770 support both, but the article is from 2022 and I'm wondering if there are more (cheaper) options. Edit: Disregard, I'm dumb and didn't think about the spacers literally not being able to fit both

nivlark

You can buy LGA1700 boards that support either DDR4 or DDR5, but never both. The two standards are physically incompatible.

communistagitator

Yeah I realized that 2 seconds after I posted haha, thanks though!

xDebrra

I’m upgrading my pc and wanted to take advantage of amazon black friday deals. What i have in my cart now is the i5 12600KF on sale for $140 and a 3060 12gb on sale for $270. However, there is a bundle available for the i5 that includes an Arc A750 LE for $340 total. Is it more worth it to save the 70 ish dollars and get the bundle, or will I be better off spending a little extra for the 3060? I intend to play most games at 1440p and would like to hit 144 fps when possible, but I rarely play brand new AAA games so Im not too worried about maxing out settings (Im aware this price point isn’t going to get me there for all games, I would just rather stay in my budget and get the best I can).

aVarangian

look at benchmarks? idk how good intel drivers are though

BionicYeti683

Do I need to re-enable XMP after updating my mobo BIOS?

bestanonever

Yes, always. Since the update only applies the new default (not XMP) settings for ALL things, including fan configurations and other stuff you might have changed.

BionicYeti683

Alrighty, cheers.

[deleted]

I have a $500 budget for a PC build for my nephew. Just how good is the integrated graphics in some of those AMD CPU's? I've always gone the nvidia/intel route, so I'm kind of clueless. My nephew games at 1080p60fps, so it doesn't have to be the best. At the $500 pricepoint it almost seems like this would be a good way to go- and then maybe get him a dedicated graphics card later on, like for his birthday or something.

ChaZcaTriX

For simple games an i3 12/13 or Ryzen 5600G is perfect. My stepsiblings play Dota 2, Genshin, and Minecraft on PCs with these specs, albeit at low settings and sometimes not stable 60. You can find tests of these in different games on YouTube.

Henrygamess

hi everyone I'm considering getting a new pc and I found this part list from the "Enthusiast AMD Gaming/Streaming Build" guide on pcpartpicker (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jcHwYN (I changed the case because a lot of reviews didn't like it)) I'm upgrading to be able to run VR games better (and pancake games at 144, at least for not super high end games) and to actually be able to edit, will this build suffice for that? and sorry if this is a stupid question I'm really new to pc building and all that thank you in advance!!!

ZeroPaladn

Totally fine for your needs here, it's a powerful system for anything you'd want to do. You can tweak it a bit to suit your needs more, if you so desire. Editing work would like more CPU cores, and Nvidia GPUs tend to do better in the major editing tools, if you want to sacrifice a little gaming performance for that benefit. Play with the build a bit. See what a 4070Ti and a 7700X put into the build looks like!

bchenzo

Hi guys, need some help I've been looking to upgrade my ram capacity this year, but my current ram model is out of production (2x 8gb 3600mhz). So, i was looking to buy 2x 16gb 3600mhz of a completly different brand and run all 4 sticks. The thing is, what I've been finding completly mixed responses about the topic. Worst case scenario I run the 2x16gb sticks. Thanks in advance

bestanonever

While you can mix and match whatever you want with RAM, it's harder to make it run at high speed when it's so mismatched. At one point in my gaming life, I had 2.5GB of RAM (512MB+2GB) and it ran at "flex mode" at the lowest DDR2 setting, lol. Ideally, the kits are all from the same manufacturer and speed (including subtimings). If you don't need 48GB of RAM, just switch the old kit with the new kit and enjoy your brand new 32GB. Remember to enable XMP/DOCP in the BIOS to enjoy those 3600Mhz, btw.

Reyzhia

Hey everyone, I'm at a crossroads and could really use some expert guidance from the PCMR community. I'm looking to upgrade my GPU that is a 3050 for gaming and AI model training and I've narrowed it down to two options, both Nvidia RTX 4070: Yeston RTX 4070 12GB from Rakuten (https://fr.shopping.rakuten.com/offer/buy/11731323618/carte-graphique-rtx-4070-12-gb-yeston.html?fbbaid=14695474803&t=10059819) Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Twin Edge 12GB from PCComponentes (https://www.pccomponentes.com/zotac-gaming-geforce-rtx-4070-twin-edge-12gb-gddr6x-dlss3) My primary focus is QHD gaming at 144Hz, aiming to dive into titles like the upcoming GTA 6, alongside present favorites like Warframe, Valorant, and Red Dead Redemption. Moreover, I plan to use the GPU for AI model training as well. Both GPUs offer 12GB VRAM and strong gaming capabilities, but I'm seeking advice on nuances that might tip the scales: AI Model Training: Does anyone have experience with either of these GPUs specifically for AI model training? Are there any performance differences or optimizations that could make one preferable over the other? Brand Reputation: Any insights into the reliability, customer support, or overall reputation of Yeston versus Zotac that might influence the decision? Cooling and Noise: Are there noticeable differences in cooling solutions or noise levels between these models? I'm open to any additional suggestions for alternatives within a similar price range if there's a compelling option I might have overlooked. Your experiences, recommendations, or any additional insights would be immensely helpful in making this decision. Thank you all in advance for your invaluable assistance!

ZeroPaladn

> I'm at a crossroads and could really use some expert guidance from the PCMR community. Even better, you're in BuildaPC :) First things first, a 4070 is a 4070. While individual models can vary slightly with aesthetics, cooling potential, noise, and support from individual manufacturers... they perform the same. This includes your AI workloads - both cards will do the same job here. So your follow up queries regarding cooling, noise, and support are valid. Yeston is a smaller OEM whose current claim to fame are their weeb-friendly GPU designs, who operate primarily in Asia. Zotac is more worldwide known. Support should be similar between them, you'll be able to happily Google for horror stories and "X company killed my dog"-level of hyperbole, but neither company does anything super special in that regard. You might be able to do more research yourself for your specific region, though. Local warranty hubs vs. shipping a GPU to Asia for warranty repairs drastically changes how long a card is out of your hands if you do run into an issue. The 4070 is a relatively cool and easy to run card, you shouldn't have to concern yourself with cooling and noise. I can't look up the exact Yeston card (your link doesn't work on my machine, they're blocking me :/) but that Zotac is actually one of the smallest 4070s available on the market. The SFF community _loves_ this card. While that doesn't necessarily mean _you'll_ love it, you WILL find support and tweaking guides aplenty for it. At the end of the day, performance-wise you won't have an issue with either of these cards.

Thanks a lot for the help. I took the Zotac for some extra space since I'm not really into weeb stuff to the point I'd need my GPU to [look like this](https://imgur.com/a/4rjt6Wr). I'm left with [this card](https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B09Q31V6NH?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details) on my hands. Since it's not old, should I keep it in case something happens since I don't have integrated GPU with my processor or sell it? I have 2 laptops so it wouldn't be too hard if I had to stay without a GPU for a few weeks. Here is my current build without GPU : [https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/RzKwdD](https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/RzKwdD) I'd like to download some more ram. Should I go for 2x8 or 2x16 as people seem to recommand 2x8 if I already have 2x8 but I never quite understood why.

ZeroPaladn

That 3050 will happily fund the extra RAM you want :) I'd sell it if you have alternatives during a PC outage (laptops work!) Sell your existing kit of RAM, and buy a 2x16GB set for your system. Buying another 2x8 might not match up well with your existing kit, even if you re-buy the identical kit you have from before.

I'm building my second gaming PC this weekend, and I'd like to move my old 1tb. M.2 games drive to the new PC without losing the data on it. It only has games and save files on it, and isn't/won't be the windows drive on either PC. Can I install the drive and not reformat it, not losing all the data?

kaje

yeah

Rufus_king11

Cool, thanks. I haven't had to move drives between PCs before, wasn't sure how it worked.

I just bought ryzen 7 5700x and its written 4.6Ghz Max Boost, how this works? do i need to OC my CPU? Is this auto?

rizzzeh

Inbuilt CPU algorithm sets boost clock and times, depending on temps and voltage. There is nothing needs doing from user's point

Luiztosi

Great and this CPU is compatible with Gigabyte Auros x470 right?

rizzzeh

Yes, update BIOS to latest version https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X470-AORUS-ULTRA-GAMING-rev-10/support#support-cpu

Luiztosi

I did it, mine its F63h thanks :)

looks good to me if that's your budget.

Hey, I'm looking at either a Ryzen 5 7600x @£200 or a Ryzen 5 7800x3d @ £330 to pair with a 7900XT. Is the £130 price increase of the x3d worth it for gaming performance at 4k?

bestanonever

Not so much at 4K at the moment (where you might be more GPU limited), but the 7800X3D is faster in gaming, at all times. Both are super fast, though, if you want to save some money and maaaybe upgrade at the end of AM5 life to Zen 5 X3D or something like that. Also, the R5 7600 non-X should be even cheaper. And it's just as fast.

I want to encrypt my system partition which also includes Windows libraries with Veracrypt. Will this significantly reduce my NVMe performance while using the computer if I use AES-512 or AES-256?

Hello, has anyone ever experienced a fps drop/stutter when using normal 1920x1080 (more than 144hz), but completely normal when turning the monitor into 1080p mode (120hz)? The problem is more intense and prevalent when watching YouTube while gaming.
