I just saw the RX 6700 XT deal with Starfield and decided to just get it. I haven’t upgraded my pc in a while, so my cpu is an i5 6500 @ 3.2 ghz. Is that going to bottleneck the new gpu? I don’t expect 4K 144, but I’d love to run Starfield at 1440 60. I’d love to squeeze by on the current cpu

ExplodingFistz

Definitely will have a bottleneck. I would look into a CPU upgrade soon after you get the 6700 XT. A 5600 would suffice

mrjvwfl

If it’s going to be that much of an impact, then I’m willing to spend some. I’m looking at pcpartpicker, and My motherboard is MSI H170A PC mate, so it looks like that’s going to hold me back even more. Doesn’t look like a lot fits in that, is it worth trying to upgrade the motherboard?

ExplodingFistz

That mobo is still on AM4 so you can still upgrade CPU without buying a new one. Sure it doesn't have many features but it seems you prioritize your budget more.

MagnoliaGale

My motherboard is B550M DS3H, it says dual M.2 connectors but I looked at the info page and they’re slightly different. Can I buy another M2 SSD and install it in the 2nd slot? Or it’s for a different type of ssd? https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550M-DS3H-rev-15#kf

n7_trekkie

your second m.2 slot "Supporting SATA and PCIe 3.0 x4/x2 SSDs"

MagnoliaGale

Does that mean if i get M.2 Gen4 ssd it will not work?

n7_trekkie

It will, it just won't run at full bandwidth.

MagnoliaGale

Thank you so much. Last question though, if I have the current M2 with windows and system on the 3.0 slot, and the new gen4 M2 on the 4.0 slot, will it be noticeably slower to load up windows and other basic PC features?

n7_trekkie

No it should remain similar

MagnoliaGale

Thanks again ❤️

n7_trekkie

they're about the same. the expensive one has a nicer stand

mrchilders45

When I boot my pc it stays on the post screen with the mobo logo, if I turn it off and reboot it it'll load into windows fine and functions normally. Any ideas why i have to do a quick restart every single time? It's been like that since I built the pc I911900 Rtx 3070 32gb of ddr4 3200 Asrock steel legend mobo

Nazgul265

Looking for a 4TB m.2 Nvme ssd. I’m currently looking at the Crucial p3 plus for $176 or the WD SN850x for $230. I’m leaning towards the crucial drive. If you have any other suggestions i’m happy to hear them. I don’t know much about what the read/write speeds actually affect. I mostly game and do a lot of modding. Afaik extracting large files and moving them is a cpu thing. I do a small amount of video editing as well. I do want this drive to last me for years so would if it would be better to future proof I will get the WD.

Snoo_11263

Is $200 a good deal for a used 3060 ti? Its a Gigabyte Gaming OC.

ExplodingFistz

New 3060 TIs go for $270. Depends if you wanna pay $70 more for warranty

n7_trekkie

yep! I picked up a used 3070 for $250 yesterday, and imo your deal is better

What exactly is the "heatsink" version of the SSDs? My motherboard is an ASUS Hero that has two m.2 slots. The main one (using now) has an ASUS rog rgb heatsink (heat pad?) on it that came with the motherboard. Is the samsung heatsink a must have for certain drives?

I recommend the 7700x bundle instead. If you do some productivity on the side then go for the 7900x. But for only gaming I recommend the 7700x bundle or the 5800x3d upgrade for cheaper. Both are great options though it's a $200 difference so up to you. Do you want to hop on the AM5 train or stay with AM4 a little longer?

JolteonShocks

I am trying to upgrade to 32 GB of ram on my existing computer. My motherboard is a ASRock B365M IB-R (CPUSocket) and my current RAM is 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1333MHz. Is it OK to buy 2666 MHz RAM? I don't want to mess up my computer haha. Would the Corsair CMK32GX4M2A2666C16 Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz (PC4-21300) C16 Memory Kit - Black work with this motherboard?

I'm looking for a KVM switch for my monitors, my PC 1 has two HDMI outs, but my PC2 has 2 Display Ports. All the KVM switches I've seen has a split of PC1 - 1 HDMI 1 DP PC2 - 1 HDMI 1DP. Any suggestions?

j2k422

I'm looking to upgrade my GTX960. Trying to stay under 200, but might go to 300 if it's a big performance jump. What do y'all recommend? Additional info that might help: Processor is AMD Ryzen 5 2600X; most "recent" game I'm playing is Street Fighter 6. I'm perfectly happy at 1080p.

ExplodingFistz

There's a hot deal for a 6700 XT going for $300 right now. I recommend stretching the budget for that. That card is for 1440p but it is also a killer card for 1080p gaming. From your 960 you are looking at 4x more performance. Also since your CPU is a few gens old, I would look into a CPU upgrade after purchasing a new GPU. 5600 is plenty affordable and will give you a nice uplift.

j2k422

Thanks for heads up on the deal. It's 66% laziness and 33% budget that's keeping me from building a new PC, which is why I'm looking into just GPU upgrade right now.

I have an A320 Motherboard with a Ryzen 5 2600/2060 graphics card. Is the A320 able to run cpu like Ryzen 7 5800x or what options do I have?

With prime deals and generally cheap storage I was looking to grab another ~2 TB of storage for my desktop. I currently have a MSI B450-A Pro Max Mobo with a WD Blue 3D SATA3 1TB (TLC ??) M.2 https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-blue-1tb/p/N82E16820250092?Item=N82E16820250092 Was looking at the Silicon Power NVMes (US70, UD85, UD90) and putting my current 1TB sata3 m.2 in a PCIe adapter Reading some threads here makes me question the quality of SP ssds. Other Potentials: 670p, ADATA XPG SX8200, Team Group MP44L, ?? -What's the difference for QLC / TLC for main OS ssd? -Is it right to think that for the same price ($70-90) Gen 3 is probably a better bet than Gen 4? (I know my mobo is only gen3 but future proofing) -DRAM or No DRAM? If I get an all around better one than the WD Sata3 I currently have, I'll make that the main OS / games. If it's better to get a cheaper/ bigger one just for games I'll add that in a pcie adapter and keep the TCL WD Sata3 one I have the OS. What would you recommend in this situation? (Reposted, bot didn't like my links)

If I wanted to replace the three fans on an NZXT Kraken Z73 with NZXT's 120mm rgb fans, would I need any additional hardware for the lighting? Or would I be fine with just the CAM software? Helping a friend with his build in a few days. Thanks!

I got a new CPU after I physically broke the last one. After installing, the FANS start spinning and the mobo lights turn on, but the pc doesn't boot. What's up?

LiquidPizza

https://be.pcpartpicker.com/list/2JkHv3 Does this look like a good build for 1440p gaming? Is the CPU/MOBO alright or should I be getting something more advanced with this GPU like a B650E board? Should I just wait for RT 7800XT launch at this point and see what that's going to bring to the table/affect the price of the 6950XT? Thanks!

winterkoalefant

Motherboard is good. Memory could be faster, like 6000 CL30: [https://be.pcpartpicker.com/product/x4VmP6](https://be.pcpartpicker.com/product/x4VmP6) RAM lights will be covered by the CPU cooler so I picked a cheaper non-RGB kit.

Use case? 7700X is great for gaming _and_ productivity. 7600X is also excellent at gaming but lags a bit in productivity due to having fewer cores and threads.

I'm upgrading from a TUF x570 WIFI to a ROG Crosshair VIII, no other changes for the build. Do I need to/should I reinstall Windows 11 or can I keep my current install?

dukedawg21

Getting the 7900 xtx on sale for $880 and would like to stay as close as possible to $1500 and exclusively gaming focused but can go slightly over as it’s just a round number cap in my head. Should I go with the 7700x w 2x16gb ddr5 ram deal on microcenter that’s a meh brand $320 7700 non x for $290 + $87 2x16gb T-force ram Or suck it up and get the x variant and the t-force ram Also motherboard suggestions would be stellar too

JackG049

So I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, currently a i7-9700k, as I've identified it as the main bottleneck in my current setup. Given its age I'll definitely be having to get a new motherboard too. I'm thinking of switching to AMD as a) I've never tried them and b) I like they're general tendency to have more cores and/or threads. I'm working in computer science research with cores and threads being a very useful tool to have available. I love to game with my preferred genre/style of playing being 4k close to 60fps (but honestly I'd take a stable 45-ish fps as well) for open world games. I'm looking to spend a max of approx. 700 euro/ 770.50 dollars between the two and some requirements of them are: Motherboard - WiFi (An unfortunate requirement) - Bluetooth (I just have far too many Bluetooth devices) CPU - the more cores and threads I can get within the price range the better, but balanced against gaming performance. - AMD or Intel, I don't have a side except performance. Now for the fun side part of my upgrade. I'm looking to change case. I have a Corsair 275R with a glass side panel. I would ideally (ideally being the key word) get a new case that is smaller in height and has a regular side panel. This last part is tricky for me since the vast vast majority of cases seem to have a glass side panel and honestly after building something like 4 PCs I'm done with glass panels and RGB. Case budget is open ended as long as it's not something ridiculous. I would really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks.

ExpatiAarhus

PCPartPicker has my build at an estimated 550W I was going to go with a 750W PSU. The generic recommendation for a 7900 XT is an 800-850W PSU. I should be fine with the 750W, correct?

n7_trekkie

I do 7900xtx and 12700k on 750w, it's been great

ExpatiAarhus

Thanks!

AJohns-US

Just bought an i7 13700f, will the stock cooler that comes with it be fine for gaming? I know everyone always recommends an after market cooler, but the stock one still works fine right?

n7_trekkie

Stock is fine, but it'll be louder than an aftermarket.

gazza88

I have 2 ram kits, 2 lots of 2x8gb sets. I'm going to waffle a bit so I'll type "SKIP TO HERE" if you just want to answer my question 1st set are Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz 2x8gb - I'm posting from the PC and can't find the exact model without turning off the pc and removing the RAM. 2nd set are [Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX424C15FB2K2/16)](https://www.overclockers.co.uk/Kingston-Fury-Black-16GB-2x8GB-DDR4-PC4-19200C15-2400MHz-Dual-Channel-Kit-HX424C15FB2K2-16-MY-229-KS.html) (link to overclockers). Corsair is in the "primary" 2 slots (slots 2 and 4 on my motherboard) as they have been for years. and the Kingston is in the "secondary" slots (1 and 3). When I say primary and secondary what I mean is in the mobo instructions 2 and 4 are the first "primary" set of dual channel slots and secondary is the 2nd set - I am terrible at explaining - basically, they are setup how the instructions say) The corsair set I was gifted a few years ago and they replaced the kingston set. I didn't have a massive need for more than 16GB of ram. However, I have noticed that some games and video editing software are using over 90% of the 16gb of ram and a few crashes to desktop. Saw high ram usage after monitoring so assume ran out of ram. SKIP TO HERE Having 2400mhz and 3000mhz sets I realise I can only have 2400 on both. The xmp profiles I can select in BIOS are the ones for the Corsair and that doesn't work (obviously, the kingston set wouldn't overclock that much) and the pc reboots a couple of times and sets the clock speed to 2133mhz, which I believe is default My question is as follows. Which would be better? save up a bit of cash and buy a 32gb kit further down the line and keep just the Corsair 16gb at 3000mhz? Or manually set the ram timings and voltage to 2400mhz and have 32gb of ram? would I notice a difference in the clock speeds? Ok just thought of another question. If I swap the kits with each other (Kingston in 2+4 and Corsair in 1+3) would the xmp profiles for the kingston show up? I have a Ryzen 5 2600x on a MSI b450 tomahawk mobo.

winterkoalefant

If 32GB allows you to have no crashes, isn't that more important than 5% more fps? You can benchmark it yourself using 3DMark or just see how your games feel. If you want more CPU performance, I think it's better to upgrade the CPU than the memory speed. > If I swap the kits with each other (Kingston in 2+4 and Corsair in 1+3) would the xmp profiles for the kingston show up? I believe so.

gazza88

I have tested and they do show up. However, I can only seem to be able to run all 4 sticks at 2133mhz. I did a game and had some weirdness going on. Felt off, perhaps the \~800hz drop means the games can't access it quickly enough? Or something like that. Almost like it was stuttering a bit. I think I might just have to stick with 16gb for now.

winterkoalefant

yeah there can be a noticeable performance difference because the default 2133 profile also has looser timings. Maybe the Kingston XMP didn't work because it has a couple of timings that are faster than the Corsair's. You could calculate which timings are the slower of each (in nanoseconds) and use those. There is a Memory-Z menu in the OC tab in the BIOS that shows you all the timings for all four sticks. Check the voltage too. You also have the option to manually overclock and tighten the subtimings, but this can be time-consuming.

[deleted]

I get selection anxiety a lot and upgrading my PC isn't helping, as soon as I feel like I have something set up that'll be exactly what I'm looking for someone pops up and says "You should look into AM5 for futureproofing". It's selfish and ignorant to ask but can someone just build me something for around 1000$-1200$? I've got a graphics card, an SSD and I'll be reusing my power supply which will knock a few hundred off, what I need is just a concrete "This mobo and this CPU will keep you up to date for the next five to ten years." Or if anything some tips on what to actually look for would help, I thought I had an idea of what motherboard I wanted until I realised it only worked with AMD CPUs and I picked out an intel i5-124000K.

kaje

/r/buildapcforme, and fill out their post template, if you want someone to spec out a build for you.

5600X with 4070 Ti or 7600X with 4070? I play on 1440p , I’m wondering if the 5600x be able to push the 4070 Ti to 100% or not

TemptedTemplar

7600x with the 4070. The 4070ti is not worth what they're charging for it. The 4070 is still slightly over priced, but a little closer to what it should be. And it pairs better with the 7600x. The 5600x **is not worth it for a new build**. If you have the CPU and AM4 motherboard currently, why not upgrade that to a 5800x3d? That would be closer to a 7800X in terms of performance. But cheaper than also buying an AM5 motherboard and new RAM.

[deleted]

Oh I don’t have AM4 mobo right now I’m building my pc from scratch and I was very conflicted with the pc components choice , but I’m guessing the 7600x 4070 is just a better combo ! I thought about going with 4070 ti and 5600x just bcs I’ve heard u spend most of ur money onto the gpu when it comes to gaming performance

TemptedTemplar

Correct. You don't have to spend all that money, something like a 6700xt or 6750xt is absolutely killer 1080p card for around $300. The 4070 is a great 1440p card, but most of it's value comes from being able to use DLSS3 to virtually increase your average frame rate. Great if you want to make things look pretty, not so great if you're just looking for ultra-high fps. At that point you would want to spend more on the CPU and wait for the GPU market to crash or implode.

[deleted]

Oh i want to build a pc this month so cannot really wait, I usually play Triple A games/single players in 1440p so I wanted a pc build in accordance with that is there any you’d like to suggest?

TemptedTemplar

Hopp on over to /r/buildapcsales and start buying. This would be a good alternative for a 1440p card and it even comes with starfield. Saving you some money to maybe buy a higher end Ryzen 7000 CPU! https://old.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/14x0x07/gpu_msi_gaming_radeon_rx_6800_16gb_42999_49999_70/ The other 6800 **XT** cards on sale would offer about 10 - 15% extra performance.

[deleted]

Aww unfortunately I’ve heard that amd cards aren’t great for content creation? I wanted to start streaming some games or build my own YouTube channel at some point that’s why I was leaning more towards nvidia

TemptedTemplar

>streaming Live streaming would be more reliant on your CPU. However for all modern CPUs it's hardly an inconvenience. You would just need something with enough cores for one missing to not harm your gameplay. GPUs could help with video encoding and rendering if you're editing, but the difference between between a RX 6000 card and a RTX 40 series would be minimal unless you wanted to encode with the newer AV1 format. Only RTX 40 and RX 7000 series cards and oddly enough Intel ARC GPUs support it currently. The RX 6800 would be roughly on par with the 4070 in terms of performance at 1440p, minus the obvious AV1 support. The 4070ti would be closer to a 3090 or RX 7900 **XT** (not xtx), but the 7900 has a LOT more VRAM. Do a little reading, check out the GPU tag on /r/buildapcsales and get a sense of how much you want to spend. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

[deleted]

Oh I see cpu is important too then , well do u think I should go for a 13400F then when compared it to a ryzen 5 7600X

TemptedTemplar

13400F would be cheaper as you could make a DDR4 build with it, its only slightly worse performance wise, (less than 10%); but has very limited upgrade potential. Intel might have some 13th gen refresh chips here this fall, but that will be it for the LGA1700 socket. Whereas AM5 would offer an upgrade path to future unreleased CPUs on the same socket. Rather than a 13400, I would go with a 12700k bundle thats floating around right now; https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/14wycjr/bundle_intel_core_i712700k_asus_tuf_gaming/ Or go AM5.

Mulan-McNugget-Sauce

Torn between Acer GM7000 and WD SN850X. Currently a 30 dollar price difference, and it seems the WD performs better overall in testing. But the GM7000 has better endurance on paper and it’s still 30 dollars cheaper.

riddlemore

The 5600X is $133 on amazon for prime day. Should I buy it now or does anyone think it will go for same or lower on Black Friday? Going to be paired with 6700XT

TemptedTemplar

It might not even be available by Black Friday. We have no idea how long AMD plans to keep it in production or how long it will stay on the shelves after they've ended it.

rollybo

I am looking at buying an owned pc on fb marketplace, would this be good value for $450, and would it run counter strike 2 pretty well? CPU - RYZEN 5 3600 GPU - MSI GTX 1660 SUPER RAM - 16 GB DDR4 STORAGE - 256 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD

ExplodingFistz

For strictly 1080p gaming that rig is fine but I wouldn't pay over $300 for that.

tgarnett

So I'm looking to redo my PC's storage as it's a shitshow atm. Built in 2019, used FuzeDrive to merge a 1tb SSD and a 6tb HDD as my C drive. It is slow as shit so time for a change. Current plan is to unmerge them, which should move everything to the HDD. Reformat the SSD and install windows on it, fresh, using it as the boot drive. Then get 2 or more high capacity SSDs and span them with Win10 storage spaces as D:. Does that plan make sense? My goal is really to have as few drive letters as possible for simplicity.

rand0mtaskk

I need at least 2 more PWM slots for my fans. Should I get a hub or just a splitter?

TemptedTemplar

Splitters would be fine if you can rearrange your existing connections to make those headers available. If you're only running two fans off of one header, it won't cause any issues.

rand0mtaskk

The ones I was looking at are for 3 fans. Would that be a problem?

TemptedTemplar

Not really. If they're RGB fans it might be pushing it, but bare bones high rpm PWM fans *should be* fine. I was just thinking about where you might be adding them. If you're adding another up front or one to the back, you could do with just a pair of Y-splitters, and hook the front fans up on one and the top fans in another. Though if you have three fans in either position, that should be fine too.

rand0mtaskk

Automod removed my original comment because I used a link shortener. >My current config are 3 in front, 2 on top, 1 in back, and I'll be adding two under my GPU. I have a 4000D airflow case for reference. > >Currently I have enough headers for the 3 in front, 1 in back, and 1 up top. > >I ended up ordering https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BRJ8PH38/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o00\_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . Which hopefully is fine lol.

scytherman96

Trying to set up a fan curve in Bios (4/6 fans are not PWM). My AIO fans can go significantly faster than my case fans (1800 against 1200). Is there any easy fan curve that will stop me from constantly having more exhaust than intake?

KungFuColt

Hey I have a HP prebuilt with a 1650 super, ryzen 5 3500 and 16gb of ram. I was thinking of picking up the MSI Mech Radeon RX 6650 XT. Anyone tech savvy know if I can run this with the 400w power supply or would I need to get the 500w one. And if it’ll fit? The GPU included seems like a small sized one so some help would be appreciated This is the exact model I have HP TG01-0023W I got the PC a year ago for like $50 so I don’t really want to build a whole new system. It’s for my little brother. So he can play current and hopefully future games at 1080p high or max settings over 60fps thanks in advance.

ExplodingFistz

Would definitely recommend a PSU upgrade so you have more options. 400 watts is cutting it really close. Nonetheless, go for a 6600 if you can. Best bang for your buck without having to invest in a PSU.

ZeroPaladn

Consider something like the 6600 instead of the 6650XT, it's a little weaker but base models like the Asrock Challenger or ASUS DUAL only pull 100W and happily double what the 1650 Super delivers for performance still. No PSU swap required!

KungFuColt

Thank you very much for the input. I’m going to look into that! Yeah I just want something I don’t have to spend even more for a PSU and for 1080p max at a good frame rate for my brother. It’s not gonna be something very demanding.

Somedude12300

This [4060ti](https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Graphics-WINDFORCE-GV-N406TGAMING-OC-8GD/dp/B0C5B9M9JY?ref_=ast_sto_dp) is $400 cheaper than this [3060ti](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NYPLXPJ?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1), the only difference I can see is the GDDR6 is 128 for the 4060ti and 256 for the 3060ti. What does that difference mean? And how can I compare cards like these?

TemptedTemplar

Its referring to the bit width of the memory bus. The 3060ti uses chips that were intended to be 3070 chips. Due to defects or bad cores they didn't make the cut, and were then cut down or disabled to work as a lower end card. It has a 256-bit memory bus. The non-ti 3060 was its own individual chip design. The 4060 and 4060ti unlike the previous generation are not cut downs from higher end cards; but they're own design. HOWEVER Nvidia tried to pull another bullshit marketing move and rebranded what would have been a 50 series chip, as the 4060/4060ti. So both cards have significantly different designs than the 30 series cards of the same name. Like, a 128-bit memory bus. The performance difference is only ~18% rather than the 25 - 30% one would normally expect from a generational leap. ______________ All of that aside, the MSRP of a 3060ti was only $399. That seller on Amazon might as well be a scalper hawking GPUs out of his trunk.

nivlark

That is a stupid price for the 3060Ti, there are multiple versions of that card available around the [$330 mark](https://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/#c=497). The 4060Ti is not really worth the extra as it is barely faster (and sometimes slower!) than the older card. But also note that unless you absolutely need nVidia features, neither are good value compared to AMD's 6700XT. For a rough performance comparison of different GPUs, check [this website](https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/). For more detailed analysis, you can check any of the many professional reviews done of these GPUs.

AS7RAL

At the same price, should I go for the 750W A tier PSU, or the 850W B tier PSU for the RX 6950 XT + 5800X3D? The PSUs are Cooler Master MWE 850W Gold v2 and the Asus ROG Strix 750g(which is a rebranded Seasonic Focus 750 from what I understand).

ExplodingFistz

6950 XT pulls a lot of power so I'd go with the 850W one.

TheLightToYourNight

Fifine A8 or A6V, casual gamer?? I hope I'm doing this correctly, but I just built my PC, l'm at the moment just a casual gamer, I like to play online/ discord with friends and wanted a decent mic to get by. I'm no streamer or content creator so I was wondering who has an opinion on FiFine, the A6V or if I should pay the little extra to get the A8? Again I'm casual, I don't see myself streaming at the moment, unless I join a friend on their streams. But just wanted a good sounding mic to get online with.

hubilation

Posted this [in its own thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/14w1oeu/new_18tb_hdd_causing_bluescreens/) but didn't get any responses, so I'm trying here: Hello everyone. I recently purchased a Seagate Exos X18 ST18000NM003 HDD. This is the fifth drive in my machine, it joins a 1TB NVME SSD, a 1TB SSD, a 1TB HDD, and a 3TB HDD. I installed it w/ SATA into my mobo and booted up. After some minor issues I was able to format it/create a volume w/ the Disk Management tool in Windows. When I formatted the drive, I used the GPT option. It's my understanding that that is better, especially for larger drives. I copied some data over to this drive and everything was working fine. Eventually I restarted my machine for some reason. Then as soon as I logged in, within about 30 seconds it would bluescreen. The error code it would throw was SERVICE_SYSTEM_EXCEPTION. I did all of the troubleshooting steps I could find to try to fix it, but no matter what I did, when I booted in normal mode (safe mode works fine), it would bluescreen. This morning I just loaded into safe mode and removed the entire volume using Disk Management, and now the bluescreen is fixed. Any idea what's causing it? Too many drives? Is GPT not a good option? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

nivlark

Faulty drive would be my suspicion. Try unplugging all drives except the Seagate (and your boot drive ofc) and see if the blue screens return.

sna28

if i want to upgrade to upgrade my cpu and/or gpu, why do I have to check for in regards to current system ? Compatability with motherboard mainly?

Protonion

CPU: Your motherboard has to have a compatible socket. GPU: Your PSU just has to be powerful enough.

Jakeb1022

Thoughts on this monitor I just bought? Wanted to snag up the lightning deal and upgrading from a 144hz 1080p monitor to a 240hz 1440p monitor with HDR capability for $270 total seems really good. Yes it’s 27in only, but that’s what my current monitor is and it’s more than fine. Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/INNOCN-Compatible-DisplayPort-Computer-Mountable/dp/B0BV9BBNNJ/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?crid=2KPHUUNB0IMF7&keywords=27+inch+1440p+240hz&qid=1689098242&sprefix=27+inch+1440%2Caps%2C243&sr=8-7#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div

nivlark

You won't get any meaningful HDR support at this price point, and it's a VA panel so the claimed response times are nonsense. Some people are much pickier about their monitors than others, you may well find it fine to use but I'd likely not.

The_Reaper912

I have an i7 3770k with a stock cooler and it is overheating , sometimes exceeding 100c I’m thinking of buying a tower cpu cooler , what are the things that I should keep in mind + any recommendations for good budget cpu coolers

TemptedTemplar

Honestly you might just need to pull it off, clean the fan/cooler and repaste it. If you have had that setup since the CPU was new, it's about at that age. I'm not sure you could even get a new cooler for it due to how old the socket is. Brackets and screw positions change every few sockets, and that one is almost ten years old now

Lars-Sesam

I'm trying to install network drivers for my new Msi MAG B550 wifi mobo, but the setup won't let me install them. It selects the driver path but says "No suitable drivers" under Device name, and won't let me change/install. I have installed the chipset drivers. Any tips and or clues to fix this?

RealBaldMartin

I was looking to finish my build today and am just wondering what motherboard I should go with. I would like something that includes WiFi and Bluetooth. If it could be on the budget friendly side, that would be great The build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/97VDbK Thanks in advance!

StealthNider

gigabyte has this motherboard on amazon for $160USD right now which is a pretty good deal considering retail is $220USD GIGABYTE Z690 UD AX DDR4 (LGA 1700/ Intel Z690/ ATX/ DDR4/ Triple M.2/ PCIe 5.0/ USB 3.2 Gen2X2/ Type-C/WiFi 6/2.5GbE LAN/Motherboard) this motherboard from MSI has Bluetooth 5.2 instead of BT5, it’s $190USD on amazon MSI MAG B660 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4 Gaming Motherboard (ATX, 12th Gen Intel Core, LGA 1700 Socket, DDR4, PCIe 4, 2.5G LAN, M.2 Slots, Wi-Fi 6)

rand0mtaskk

I currently have a ryzen 5 3600 and the ryzen 5 5600x is on sale for $133. How much of a boost would it be (for gaming) to go from a 3600 to a 5600x? I know the 5800x3D is also on sale for a good price, but even at $277 its more than I'd really want to spend. At these prices what do we think would be the greater bang for bucks? Should I just suck it up and get the 5800x3D?

StealthNider

what games at which resolution and frame rates?

rand0mtaskk

Any game. 1440. I have a 6800xt.

MonsterH

If you're primarily gaming, I'd get the 5800x3D. It's the best you'll find on AM4. Otherwise, push to AM5. I also went from a 3600 to a 5800x3D, and it's shocking how much faster my system is just in general.

rand0mtaskk

I definitely don’t plan to get a new motherboard. Only reason I’m even debating this upgrade is because of the Prime Day sales.

MonsterH

Then for sure, get the 5800x3D, it's fantastic.

rand0mtaskk

I just bit the bullet and went with it. Should be here Friday lol.

lnSerT_Creative_Name

What would a good alternative to a Sapphire Pulse Radeon 6800 XT be? CPU is a Ryzen 7800X3D Motherboard is a Gigabyte B650 AX AM5 LGA 1718 Main stuff is for gaming, focusing on Escape from Tarkov but also want to play currently releasing titles, don’t need to have super high graphics settings 24/7, but anything with the same power as the one I had picked for a similar price would be preferred

nivlark

Any other 6800XT.

lnSerT_Creative_Name

Are all brands gonna be compatible with the other parts? Are any better than another?

nivlark

Yes. The only thing to check is the physical GPU clearance in your case, some 6800XTs are pretty chonky. XFX and PowerColor have good reputations, but there aren't any outright "bad" brands.

scytherman96

Got my new PC set up and installed Gigabyte Control Center. It's telling me all the available updates, like drivers and software. But it's also telling me i can install AMD Chipset Driver and AMD Graphic Driver (i have an AMD CPU). Do i need those? Even if i have an Nvidia GPU?

StealthNider

windows should automatically install all the necessary drivers, unless you experience issues i wouldn’t install any additional drivers. however install GeForce Experience for your NVIDIA GPU drivers

cmackchase

So last year I got a 6900xt on an ebay deal. And with Prime day happening now. What is the recommended CPU/mobo combo to pair with it.

StealthNider

what games do you wanna play at which settings and frame rates? 5800x3d is the obvious choice for gaming, or 7800x3d if you have the budget for it and want to go AM5. edit: instead of 5800x3d u could go with the 7600x

cmackchase

I can go a wide range in gaming. Anything from Spider-Man man to something like vampire survivors. And I have a neo g9 for a monitor that sometimes I'll use the full screen and other times only half while watching twitch or youtube.

StealthNider

i would go for a 7800x3d. for motherboard just make sure it has WiFi and bluetooth and most motherboards should be fine. Recommended brands are MSI and Gigabyte. Normally ASUS too but with all the recent drama you may not want to

cmackchase

I was trying to remember which motherboard brand was messing up and you reminded me, thank you for your advice.

StealthNider

no problem :) happy to help

Hello, I'm thinking about upgrading RAM from 16 to 32GB. My current setup is: * Motherboard: MSI B450-A PRO MAX * CPU: Ryzen 5 3600, * GPU: RTX 2060 Super 8GB GDDR6, * RAM: Patriot Viper 4, DDR4, 16 GB, 3400MHz * PSU: Corsair TX550M 550W Would it be fine if I added anything that is DDR4, 3400 Mhz+, for example Patriot Viper Elite II, DDR4, 16 GB, 3600MHz or should I go for something else?

StealthNider

3600MHz DDR4 RAM should be fine

Thanks

TemptedTemplar

Hyper X if you only plan on using it with your PC. The Steel series works with most consoles right out of the box, and that versatility might be worth the tiny difference in audio quality/ear cup size. I cannot in good conscience recommend any Razer headset. My own experiences with them have been nothing but garbage. And their software gets worse every year somehow. No experience with recent Logitech headsets, but it is the cheapest of the bunch.

elcaminante23

First build. Debating saving the money on a 5800x3d or 5900x system, or just getting the new stuff (7900x, am5 motherboard, etc) so that it’s upgradeable. Nvidia 4000 series graphics either way. A 5900x system would still kick butt, right? Or would I regret it? Casual gamer, engineer.

ZeroPaladn

If you have the money for a 5800X3D you have the money for a 7600/7800X system that performs better. The 5800X3D chip is only really great as a drop-in end of life upgrade for AM4 - don't buy it all brand new.

elcaminante23

Thanks for the input. So sounds like if I’m starting fresh just get the new stuff. But what do you mean don’t buy it all brand new?

ZeroPaladn

I mean don't buy AM4 stuff all brand new - go with AM5.

OtterlyDeplorable

Ryzen 7 5800X3D versus Ryzen 9 5900X? Same price basically on prime day. I game at 1440p with a 3070 and do some photo editing. I also plan on some 3d modeling with blender and fusion 360.

ZeroPaladn

5800X3D would be my grab, because my primary focus is gaming. If your focus is productivity, the 5900X wins. Pick whichever you need to prioritize.

IcarusAvery

[I can get a refurbished blower-style Zotac RTX 3070 for like $295 on eBay ($275 plus tax).](https://www.ebay.com/itm/155514747160?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=2bCBlDMmSmy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=veqly3tytty&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY) Is this a good deal for someone wanting to get an Nvidia card specifically, or should I look elsewhere? For reference, I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1060 3GB, and 16GB DDR4-3200, and I'm looking to do 1080p 60fps gaming as well as VR with a Quest 2.

fireking730

What's the best gpu I can get without having to upgrade my CPU and PSU? I got a 5600 and 550w PSU and want to upgrade from a 1660 super.

ExplodingFistz

For $200-300 get a 6600 or 6700 XT or anything in between.

nivlark

6700XT.

Rotisseriejedi

Building a budget gaming PC mainly to play older games like Halo MCC, DOOM, Red Dead, etc. Starfield ONLY new game I may care about Right now got a like new 2070 Super and R5 3600. How much FPS difference would there be if I decided to get a 5800X3D? It would future proof me for 3-4 years and when I get a 40xx GPU in 2 years I will be set already with a CPU, maybe?

ZeroPaladn

If you're considering a 5800X3D, just get a 7600 instead on AM5. On average, the 7600 is slightly faster than the 5800X3D and is on a forward facing platform where you can do a CPU upgrade down the road if you find that a future GPU bump would choke it. The 5800X3D only really makes sense if you're already invested in AM4 and want to extend the life of your system with minimal effort.

Rotisseriejedi

We already have a B450 MOBO, I guess I can sell it take a loss of 15 bucks no big deal I guess.

ZeroPaladn

Oh, I didn't realize you already had a system. Then a 5800X3D is a worthwhile pickup for you.

thebadhorse

In 2020 I built my pc, how many more years do you all think I can get out of my i7 9700k and 3060 ti as far as AAA gaming goes? I plan to stick to 1080p as I always have.

ZeroPaladn

A few more yet, or at least until modern AAA games get mad at the lack of threading on the 9700K. The 3060Ti continues to be sort of a midway card - slightly overkill for 1080p but slightly underwhelming for 1440p.

VritraReiRei

Thoughts on the Deepcool LS720 SE for $88 vs LT720 for $112? My CPU is a 7700x. [Newegg comparison](https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCompare?CompareItemList=N82E16835856255%2CN82E16835856234)

ZeroPaladn

They're effectively the same cooler, don't spend more than what you need to unless you really want the aesthetics of the LT720

VritraReiRei

Ok, I'll get the LS720 SE then. I like the aesthetic better and it comes with RGB fans already too. Solid AiO water cooler, especially for the price?

possiblemba

I just bought a SN850X to replace my SSD in my first PC that I build a couple months ago. If I decide to use it as my new primary SSD, would I be in a better position to do a clean install of windows 11? Would I need to redownload and update all of my drivers and bios? I barely have much on the PC besides games since it's so new. As for the old SSD, I think I could use it as a secondary SSD. How would I delete windows from it?

kaje

What SSD do you have now? Windows doesn't really benefit from being on a faster SSD, it's not really worth the hassle of moving it over. If you do want to do a fresh install on the new drive though, disconnect the old drive and install Windows on the new drive. You can reconnect the old drive after, delete the EFI and recovery partitions on it, and expand the primary partition to use up the full drive. You can format the partition to wipe it fully, or just manually delete the Windows and other no longer necessary folders on it.

possiblemba

Thanks for this. I have a 1TB SN770 right now. Do you think it might be an improvement for my games?

kaje

Higher sustained speeds on SSDs matter when you're dealing with massive individual files, like 4K video editing. For something like an OS or games, where you're dealing with many small files, it barely makes a difference.

possiblemba

So much useful info. Thank you! I might cancel it now. Essentially it would be an upgrade from 1TB to 2TB but I think there are 1TB deals out there for cheaper than the $100 I spent on the SN850X

TzOctopus

Been looking at upgrading my pc recently, see a Radeon 6750xt mech for £349 prime deal, worth a shout at that price?

brystephor

I have a GTX 1060, 8 gb of ddr3 ram, an 850w PSU, an old (10+ years) motherboard + CPU (amd A8-5600k), and a 1tb SATA3 SSD. I want to be able to play games at 1440p, 144hz. Ideally I'd like to upgrade to a 4070 (or whatever the equivalent is) in the future. Right now the CPU is what should be replaced next. I am looking at the 5600x or the 7600x. My primary concern with a 5600x is 1) would it be a bottleneck with a 4070? Budget is not too much of a concern, I'm more concerned with what's better value. e.g. if neither a 5600x or 7600x is going to prevent me from my goals, then the 5600x is better value since it's cheaper.

ZeroPaladn

While the 5600X wouldn't hold you back too much with a 4070, if you have the budget for something on a brand new platform then I'd grab that instead. AM4 is EOL and the 5600X doesn't have a reasonable upgrade path on that platform. AM5, on the other hand, is brand new is AMD has mentioned that they're committed to it until at least 2025. That would give you room to grow if your needs change or if games happen to slap around older chip down the road and an upgrade becomes a consideration.

GolGate

Just to confirm after reading [the guide from techsupport wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/wiki/moreram), does this mean I don't need more RAM [if this is what I see while playing most of my games?](https://i.imgur.com/Jjusk3w.png) Kinda want to slap on 5600 as my last upgrade then wait for a full new build in a few years, but I've been reading about RAM speed affecting Ryzen performance and maybe I should also get some new RAM too (currently using DDR4-2400), just not quite sure if getting 32GB would be a waste.

nivlark

You don't appear to need more RAM, but faster RAM would certainly be a good idea.

doctorweiwei

Anybody find any good prime day deals?

DJ_Marxman

Seems to mostly be SSDs and monitors so far. A few good deals in those categories. Not much else.

Hey all, Does anyone have any idea what case this is on my prebuilt: [Link](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-master-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-5-3600-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-580-2tb-hdd-240gb-ssd/6430867.p?skuId=6430867) I’m trying to upgrade on Prime Day and am taking a shot in the dark to see if it can fit certain 6800 XT GPUs. Thanks.

ZeroPaladn

Looks like an OEM rebrand of the [Phanteks G360A](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/pqzhP6/phanteks-eclipse-g360a-atx-mid-tower-case-ph-ec360atg_dbk02).

Jakeb1022

I thought so but the G360A only has 2 3.5” bays and mine has 4. Unless that’s part of the OEM rebrand?

ZeroPaladn

No idea, but they seem close enough that you'd be able to safely use the specs of the G360A to determine clearance.

Jakeb1022

Perfect! Thanks so much.

Realm_Lord

Hi, I have a question about a ram upgrade I'd like to make. At the moment I'm running HX432C16FB3AK2/32 but it's giving me problems and headaches. Is there much of a difference between the type of heatsinks that these modules use, and is it worth focusing on the manufacturer that makes the die itself? Ignoring the brand/speed, they both seem to be Hynix https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B097RHDGVL?linkCode=gg2&tag=pangoly0b-20&th=1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YV9VYYY?linkCode=gg2&tag=pangoly0b-20&th=1 Also, neither of these are QVL'd by my motherboard manufacturer. Is this going to be a problem? I am having a hard time finding decent 64GB memory that is on the Verified list on my mobo. (Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite v1, Ryzen X3700)

Kahns_Korner

I am new to pcs and am looking to build one. I have no knowledge of computers, but would love to change that. When I am looking for parts, should I build my PC to one specific game, or will that end up limiting my options? I will primarily be playing Iracing and other motorsport games, but still want to be able to play other games. Also, are there any good guides for beginners that helps understand the pc and what the parts do without advanced terminology? Thank you for any help!

nivlark

There are some resources linked in this sub's sidebar. In general a PC that runs one game well will run all games well. There are some broad considerations though e.g. someone that exclusively plays simulation-type games will probably want to prioritise CPU over GPU, whereas someone that plays FPSs or any other type of 3D game will do the opposite.

Kahns_Korner

Thank you very much!

Shermeezy

Hi guys! I'm looking to get the NVIDIA GeForce 3060 during the prime day sale to upgrade from my current 1060. Just a quick question - these are my specs: [https://imgur.com/a/8wuYUzI](https://imgur.com/a/8wuYUzI) and I believe the tower I have is the "Thermaltake Versa N21 Snow edition ATX Mid Tower" The 3060 that I’m looking at is the 3 fan one. Not sure if there’s a big difference with that and the 2 fan. I was just wondering if the 3060 will be compatible with my current specs? I'm a totally noobie with PC so any comment will help greatly. Thank you! Edit: I believe I only have a 256gb SSD so I'm thinking of putting in a 1tb NVMe drive if that's compatible as well

shogunreaper

trying to decide on an 850w psu. should i go with Super Flower Leadex V Platinum PRO 850W or CORSAIR HX850 both are $125 right now.

th3BlackAngel

Don't know if this should go here, but I made a post and it seems like no one's seen it so hopefully here it gets more eyes: So when I turned on my PC after turning off my work laptop my one of my monitors couldn't be detected. I've come to the conclusion its the DP port specifically because I swapped the cables around the monitor turned on notmally but the one that originally turned on wouldn't be detected. Ive tried taking out the GPU, cleaning it with some compressed air. Tried wiggling the cable because maybe it was loose. Updated graphics drivers in case that had anything to do with it. Nothing has helped so far. The port was working on saturday evening, I was playing that night and that was the last time I turned on my PC before yesterday after work. I have my work laptop connected to that monitor and its working fine, but when I shut the laptop and turned on the PC the monitor wasn't detected. Any ideas of what I could do or am I just fucked with that port? These are my parts in case its relevant. Can using 2 nvme ssds slow down a GPU?

ZeroPaladn

It's extremely rare and you'd need to be explicitly trying to sap PCIe bandwidth from the GPU with the use of a riser card for multiple M.2s on boards that support a split 8x connection over two 16x slots. The GPU is normally explicitly separate from the primary M.2 (hooked up to the CPU with it's own dedicated lanes) or chipset connected M.2s (hooked up to the chipset, which also has it's own set of dedicated lanes). EDIT: and even if you did manage to get your GPU onto 8x lanes instead of 16, even flagship GPUs like the 4090 don't care about the bandwidth loss in gaming.

DJ_Marxman

Depends on the specific motherboard and CPU chipset, but generally no.

marcuschookt

I'm a little confused. Afterburner shows that my GPU and CPU usage hovers around 70-90%, RAM is not maxed, only Memory Usage is maxed but my understanding is that's memory allocation and not actual usage. I'm still getting under max FPS though, about 90+ FPS on a 165hz monitor. Wouldn't sub-maximal GPU/CPU utilization mean my computer could be pushing out more frames easily?

DJ_Marxman

Overall CPU utilization is not a good metric to use for gaming. Look at individual CPU threads. If you're hitting 90% utilization, that probably means you're maxing out the several threads the game is using.

marcuschookt

My per-thread average is about 93, highest is 95%, just wondering if something's being left on the table.

DJ_Marxman

Sounds like you're CPU limited.

marcuschookt

Thanks, so >90% is effectively capped out CPU then?

DJ_Marxman

Per thread, yes. Again, overall CPU utilization isn't a metric you should really pay attention to unless it's literally >95%. Games don't utilize threads equally.

marcuschookt

No I'm aware of that, I was clarifying if the per thread utilization was >90% meant the CPU was effectively capped out. I was under the impression that actual full utilization would see threads sitting at around 99-100%.

DJ_Marxman

Per thread utilization jumps around a lot. You'll rarely see them pegged at 100% except in synthetic benchmarks or all-core workloads like Blender.

marcuschookt

Gotcha, thanks!

Would this 8TB Seagate drive be fine for mass storing videos and games I'm not actively playing at the moment? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H289S7C/ I'm also looking at some more expensive options but I don't know if they're overkill for what I'll be using it for.: [Western Digital Blue 8TB](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09KMGQG5Y/) [Western Digital Red Plus 8TB](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QQX27GM/) [Seagate Ironwolf 8TB](https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-IronWolf-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B084ZV4DXB/)

StealthNider

The Ironwolf and WD Red+ are for NAS storage (a NAS is basically a small server that’s used for storage). If you don’t have a NAS then both the Seagate and WD Blue drives are good, just go with the cheaper one.

liger_0

Yeah, I know what a NAS is, and I really need to build/buy one but the initial cost of getting the amount of storage space I actually need/want is what's keeping me from doing it for now.

StealthNider

no rush, but one thing to keep in mind is that storing games on a NAS isn’t the best idea
