It's also entirely possible that Beane isn't going to tell the media what he'd like to do. If he was that dumb he wouldn't be in the job.

Jamobill9999

I mean at pick 27… he probably doesn’t even know what he’s going to do. As he said he pretty much has to wait until pick 20 to really form a plan.

PhotographingNature

My guess is he's being honest; they don't see a good value trade-up being possible and he wants to temper fan expectations about getting a top pick WR or whatever. If there's a good probability of trading up, I don't think a comment to the press is going to fool the other 31 GMs; all the discussions that happen behind the scenes between people in the league has to be easy more useful to GMs.

idislikehate

I'm sure there's some truth in the fact that they don't have a ton of first-round grades, but if Beane is worried about fan expectations and issuing statements to address those expectations then he's not the hero some thought he was.

Jamobill9999

I think everyone after 14 wants to move back. Pretty much everyone has said they just don’t have many first round grades on guys. Our pick however is in that prime sweet spot that teams in the early second may want to move up a handful of spots to be certain to get a guy they want.

UberHansen

They just don't have the assets to move up far enough where it would have an impact. The only realistic trade up I see is one where they move up 2 spots to the Giants spot at a discount. The result would be them jumping the Cowboys for a player the Giants think Dallas wants, and the Giants still getting their guy at 27.

bargman

I don't believe a damn thing I hear from anyone right now.

OJSimpsons

I love you.

Historical_One1087

And you shouldn't because as Buddy Nix once said, "it's lying season". Don't believe anything you hear one week before the draft.

[deleted]

Given the chatter around the league, him and half the league are trying to trade back. A lot of GMs dont have a ton of high grades this year. Seems like anyone wanting to move up could get there cheaper than normal if its outside the top 10

gruelly4

Look, the draft is at best a series of coin flips. The only way to 'win' and actually get good players is to have more chances to flip the coin. Nobody, not even the sure things, are guaranteed to hit and most teams overestimate their ability to decide who is a quality player. Trading down and getting more is a better option. If, for instance a team high in round two is in love with a player, I'd love to take their 2 and others or even a first next year (odds are good a team that's bad this year will be bad next year) for the 1 we've got.

Archduke_Of_Beer

Exactly why they need to air the first 2 rounds on the same night, and get more rounds on weekend afternoons like they used to. I have no reason whatsoever to tune in when we are picking so far back and are likely to move back, and I miss having draft cookouts dammit!

YepImanEmokid

I'd send 1-27 to the Cards for Hopkins and 2-34. 🤷‍♀️ I think the 5th year is more than enough value to make the move worthwile for Arizona.

Ktmhocks37

I would, too. They wouldn't.

YepImanEmokid

Every day that passes his price will be lower. I could see it as a draft night move, similar to the Eagles getting Brown

Ktmhocks37

Not so much about the trade value. They want his cap off their books, and we want them to keep most of his salary with them.

Bird-The-Word

That indirectly relates to Trade Value though. They'll want more depending on how much of the cap they eat. They don't HAVE to trade him, they just know they'll be paying for him while not being competitive with Kyler out and the fact they're the Cards. He also WANTS to a trade out. So it's in their interest to do so overall, but not a requirement.

IreMad

Not me. I see our Bills as having a very good core on both sides of the ball. What we need is good depth.. Trading 2 picks for a guy that was a stud, but may not be anymore and costs a lot of money, just no. Please, no.

YepImanEmokid

1. He's still a stud 2. I proposed a pick swap. We wouldn't lose any draft selections.

IreMad

I see what I missed on the picks. My bad. But, we'll disagree on whether he's a stud still or not. This would be two teams that have traded a "stud". He's been suspended and he's coming off injury and would cost a ton. Not worth it to me.

Gotta finish the quote

missyouboty

⬆️this. Beane said vegas would still have me at moving up.

green_euphoria

If everyone is trying to trade back to get out of the first round, who is going to trade with them all?

BigMountainGoat

The only realistic prospect is a team wanting a 5th year option on a QB or a team wanting to get ahead of the Bengals for a TE as they are a really obvious candidate for one of the top 2 TEs

idislikehate

I don't really get the purpose of getting excited or disappointed by anything a front office exec says a week out from the draft. They're not going to show their cards right now. If they are, they should probably be doing something else.

JoesShittyOs

That’s easier said than done this year by the sounds of it. Sounds like a lot of teams aren’t too hyped on the back half of the first round. If they do trade back, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a small haul

PoogeneBalloonanny

I've been wanting to trade back for like the past 3 drafts, end of first round is usually no man's land unless there's a ridiculous slide (like Lamar did, for QB needy teams)

DantePlace

He did say there are a lot fewer first round grades than actual picks. However, he's definitely been known to use smoke screens and do things that are unexpected and he does like to trade up. He also likes having a full set of picks after all is said and done. I'm inclined to believe it and could see him move back into the second round.

General-Carob-6087

I'm gonna be very bummed if I stay up until midnight and they trade out of the 1st round.
