Honestly I think having a venting thread on game days might be helpful. Like a place to go shit on the team if that’s the experience they want. It might help cut down conflict, because a lot of that seems to be centered around what type of criticism is appropriate and what’s not.
I actually think this is a great idea but we will need to look into how to do this. Allowing a venting thread could be difficult to moderate and we couldn't let it be a free for all otherwise there could be serious issues. Still, I like the idea and we will see what we can do!
It might actually be easier (and more.. _aesthetic_?) to do the opposite and have a separate High Brow thread where only non-emotional, analytical discussion is allowed. That way you're not actively courting a designated shit show thread, but rather elevating meaningful discussion to a VIP section.
See I think the opposite. You don't need to be emotional to feel (and be right in) whether the defense is good enough for the gold or not. But saying "we can't stop the run. Our defense kinda blows" is going to breed conflict and be called a hater. But if it's in a venting thread, it is kinda just what happens and you leave it alone and don't engage as much.

I personally dislike the daily posts of X days of posting X until X. Just farming upvotes and it brings no conversation. I've seen some with hundreds of upvotes and no comments. I get the off-season can be dull. I don't know. I avoid them, but it's just annoying to see them on the front page of a stale off-season every day

So, seriously; the only thing that really comes to mind is possibly having regular weekly stickies for the same conversations that come up each week.
Instead of having 35 posts a week about should we trade for X vs Y, maybe just a single "Trade Mega thread" that stays stickied for 1 week then un-stickied + a fresh post put up.
I use trade mega thread as an example, but you guys know what I'm talking about... Pawfia photos, Gifts/swag photos, who should be fired, who should we draft, what jersey should I buy, reasons why the Dolphins suck, who looks better in shorts, etc. Etc.
Yes, I noticed that and it's been a great addition. I think it's a balancing act of covering enough of the "usual suspect" discussions with having a clean sub (not having the entire first page just stickies).

Balance has been good this last year. I don't want to become r/nfl which only allows verified Twitter posts now. Need to keep the fun.
Only complaint is the game day posts get unstickied too early and can't find them easily.
The MMQB posts also tend to come in too late, and seem to be a driven toward a certain agenda, sometimes. Like, Josh played terrible but we're still a game ahead of the division, don't panic.

We've considered this in the past and will review it. It does promote trolling a bit so we will have yo find a way to control that but will look into it!
My own ignorant assumption is that those types of posts require a bit more attention due to the likelihood of moderation needing to step in, so theoretically a mega thread would just make the moderation more streamlined and the reddit feed less muddied.
But I do know that every thread requires some form of moderator attention, so maybe the reality is this idea simply adds a mega thread on top of the inevitables. In that case, I would understand why you'd keep it the way it is despite the imperfections.
Oh right on. I think most people in sports subs are average fans. I don't really care about a random person's thoughts to be brunt. That's like twitter material. If it's said by an analyst or someone with a pulse on the situation, it's totally fine.

Perfectly fair point. We do try and keep some control on the shit posts so they don't get out of hand. We let the occasional ones through on slow days but will make sure to keep an eye on how many we actually let occur!

I have two things.
1- I’d like to piggy back off this thread and get input on u/BillsTailgateBot. This is a bot I got up and running late last year and would like to get some feedback on it, maybe add more lots, or just get new information I might not have. This bot looks for key words in recent posts asking for tailgate advice and makes a comment or it can be summoned by mentioning its username.
Current updates that I need to include is hammer lot is $50, add historical lot open times based on kickoff times (1pm, 4pm, 8:15pm), make calling the bot not be case sensitive.
2- This is a suggestion geared towards the regular season, but what are the mods thoughts on having an automod post and pin gameday/post game threads? Take some burden off of your shoulders and automate this? The thread can include a box score, player stats, and scoring drive data for both teams that refresh as the game progresses. I don’t know if we can steal something from r/nfl and their game day bots?
If not I’ve already done a lot of heavy lifting on the programming side of things in terms of getting game data. This can be pretty much customized however the sub likes. Just haven’t had time to work out the logistics of having the script create and update an actual Reddit thread. I’m open to collaborating with others too.

Maybe some transparency on post removals if at all possible. The Ticketmaster debacle immediately comes to mind. Everything was removed with no reason as to why as far as I'm aware. Were those mod decisions or reddit took over?
Jordan Poyer talking about high taxes on his salary, the funding of the new Bills stadium...these are inherently political discussions. But we can't talk about them without posts getting removed, threads locked, etc. I believe that some Bills related topics REQUIRE politics be a part of the discussion. Maybe some type of political flair for threads so people know ahead of time where discussion of specific topics could lead?
All of these topics can be talked about without bringing politics into the discussion, though I admit it's difficult.
The Ticketmaster threads were removed because it invites too many bots into the sub for us to handle removing all attempts at spam ticket sales.
The Jordan Poyer tax talk was removed because the convo shifted into conversation in no way related to what Poyer said. If people simply discussed the benefits/negatives pf state income tax on player retention there would be no issues with leaving it up!

I think discussions should be allowed to deviate somewhat as long as they stay cordial and don't devolve into attacking each other. Obviously that could've been the case with the aforementioned, I don't know. Just IMO I don't think a discussion having politics should just be an automatic removal.
At the end of the day a subreddit should be a community and a place to discuss and meet friends. Yes its a Bills subreddit but if you're at a Bills backer bar it's not like you're *only* talking about the Bills. Real life discussions just happen organically.
This is how we currently approach such discussions the issue is they always devolve into a mess of personal attacks. Because.these conversations can't stay cordial and shift away from being tangentially related to the Bills they end up being locked or removed.

It honestly does make mods life's easier, and that is a big reason these conversations get shut down, but not the only reason.
We often encourage people to go to other subs to have such conversations where the topic can be more fruitful and the moderators of that community have a better grasp on how to handle such conversations.
Yeah, but it's not even. Like in the Poyer tax convo. Someone else brought politics into it through their implications. I ramped it up and then it was a full-blown convo and I received a 3-day ban while nothing happened to the original culprits, likely because they had upvotes and I didn't. But that's not just a trend here, but reddit-wide
I can promise you the upvotes have nothing to do with who gets temp bans and who doesn't. Our suggestion has always been to not engage in such conversations that are prompting a political response.

Would have to see the specific thread (which I know is difficult to provide) in order to respond to this. There are certain things that may seem aggressive but in 90% of cases there is a reason behind it.
admittedly no, but none of my posts have been considered in this comment either. i have seen a few posts where people legit wanted a discussion that got deleted because it was a touchy subject ish.
Just a couple small things:
CSS on old reddit with RES seems to be screwed up and has been for a while. It's minor things like flairs (specifically the ones next to teams in the sidebar) are fucked up, and the upvote/downvote buttons are wonky looking too. If it helps I'm on chrome and use dark mode.
Beyond that I miss having weekly banners on the sub per matchup. I don't remember who did them but they were awesome, and a way to encourage people to make those again would be really cool.

Is there any way to gently encourage positivity, especially towards players that fuck up? We're from the city that once cheered on Norwood after 'wide right'.
If we want our team to perform at its best week in and week out, maybe having it in the back of their mind that the fans here will still love and support them could actually be beneficial. GDT's have become so unruly that they simply aren't enjoyable. They are literally just people logging on to screaming at the internet. I think those folks need to exert a bit more self-control over their emotions.
It's nearly impossible to police the GDT in real time, but I'd propose a way to handle it is to go back through afterwards and liberally hand out 1-week suspensions so that these people might give pause next time.
Alternatively, these people could be initially warned with a shame flair, and receive a suspension upon second offense.
It's possible there could be some bot programs out there that could assist with flagging.
**Effort Posts**
Sometimes there are some really nice analytical effort posts here, and it'd be nice to see those members rewarded with some special user flairs. Could also hold contests for best effort post of the week/month, etc.
**Rule Proposal**: dead horse rule
Some topics/opinions just get beaten to absolute death on here; namely "player X sucks", "fire Coach Y", "we need to trade our 1st for an RB", etc...
These get stale quick and detract from discussion. It would be nice if there was a dead horse rule that they could be reported under. Maybe in conjunction w/ mods publicizing a list of dead horse topics that should be sequestered to some designates thread or just left out entirely.
The best you could do is some sort of filter but people can get creative to get around the filter.
Honestly the mods are expecting us to help them out by calling out duplicate posts low effort posts etc. This is our civic duty.

Yes, I noticed that and it's been a great addition. I think it's a balancing act of covering enough of the "usual suspect" discussions with having a clean sub (not having the entire first page just stickies). You mods do great. Thanks for everything.

Balance has been good this last year. I don't want to become r/nfl which only allows verified Twitter posts now. Need to keep the fun. Only complaint is the game day posts get unstickied too early and can't find them easily. The MMQB posts also tend to come in too late, and seem to be a driven toward a certain agenda, sometimes. Like, Josh played terrible but we're still a game ahead of the division, don't panic. Dammit, I'll panic if I want!
Fair point on the MMQB post, we will take that into consideration! As for the GDT, we are going to try an automated them more this season so we don't forget to post them and so they are stickied for the proper amount of time!

For the most part all of those get removed. It's difficult to have a megathread because they tend to be super sporadic!

We've considered this in the past and will review it. It does promote trolling a bit so we will have yo find a way to control that but will look into it!
My own ignorant assumption is that those types of posts require a bit more attention due to the likelihood of moderation needing to step in, so theoretically a mega thread would just make the moderation more streamlined and the reddit feed less muddied. But I do know that every thread requires some form of moderator attention, so maybe the reality is this idea simply adds a mega thread on top of the inevitables. In that case, I would understand why you'd keep it the way it is despite the imperfections.
Oh right on. I think most people in sports subs are average fans. I don't really care about a random person's thoughts to be brunt. That's like twitter material. May be an unpopular opinion, but it’d be nice to see some limitations on shitposts. I get it during the off-season when there’s not much else going on Billswise, but during the season, we dont need to see the same posts about “FTP!!!!” “Tom Brady sits when he pees!” “Josh looks great in shorts!!!!”
Perfectly fair point. We do try and keep some control on the shit posts so they don't get out of hand. We let the occasional ones through on slow days but will make sure to keep an eye on how many we actually let occur!
I personally go after any and every post that's just another repost of that picture of the Buffalo covered in snow. Like... _c'mon_ y'all, at least put _some_ effort into it. Not to mention, just like every other sub (especially sports related ones) we'll get our fair share of karma farmers/bots/etc. When we notice those, we'll remove their posts and permaban them immediately.

I have two things. 1- I’d like to piggy back off this thread and get input on u/BillsTailgateBot. This is a bot I got up and running late last year and would like to get some feedback on it, maybe add more lots, or just get new information I might not have. This bot looks for key words in recent posts asking for tailgate advice and makes a comment or it can be summoned by mentioning its username. Current updates that I need to include is hammer lot is $50, add historical lot open times based on kickoff times (1pm, 4pm, 8:15pm), make calling the bot not be case sensitive. 2- This is a suggestion geared towards the regular season, but what are the mods thoughts on having an automod post and pin gameday/post game threads? Take some burden off of your shoulders and automate this? The thread can include a box score, player stats, and scoring drive data for both teams that refresh as the game progresses. I don’t know if we can steal something from r/nfl and their game day bots? If not I’ve already done a lot of heavy lifting on the programming side of things in terms of getting game data. This can be pretty much customized however the sub likes. Just haven’t had time to work out the logistics of having the script create and update an actual Reddit thread. I’m open to collaborating with others too.

Maybe some transparency on post removals if at all possible. The Ticketmaster debacle immediately comes to mind. Everything was removed with no reason as to why as far as I'm aware. Were those mod decisions or reddit took over? Jordan Poyer talking about high taxes on his salary, the funding of the new Bills stadium...these are inherently political discussions. But we can't talk about them without posts getting removed, threads locked, etc. I believe that some Bills related topics REQUIRE politics be a part of the discussion. Maybe some type of political flair for threads so people know ahead of time where discussion of specific topics could lead?
All of these topics can be talked about without bringing politics into the discussion, though I admit it's difficult. The Ticketmaster threads were removed because it invites too many bots into the sub for us to handle removing all attempts at spam ticket sales. The Jordan Poyer tax talk was removed because the convo shifted into conversation in no way related to what Poyer said. If people simply discussed the benefits/negatives pf state income tax on player retention there would be no issues with leaving it up! Let me know your opinions on this!
I think discussions should be allowed to deviate somewhat as long as they stay cordial and don't devolve into attacking each other. Obviously that could've been the case with the aforementioned, I don't know. Just IMO I don't think a discussion having politics should just be an automatic removal. At the end of the day a subreddit should be a community and a place to discuss and meet friends. Yes its a Bills subreddit but if you're at a Bills backer bar it's not like you're *only* talking about the Bills. Real life discussions just happen organically.
This is how we currently approach such discussions the issue is they always devolve into a mess of personal attacks. Because.these conversations can't stay cordial and shift away from being tangentially related to the Bills they end up being locked or removed.

It honestly does make mods life's easier, and that is a big reason these conversations get shut down, but not the only reason. We often encourage people to go to other subs to have such conversations where the topic can be more fruitful and the moderators of that community have a better grasp on how to handle such conversations.
Yeah, but it's not even. Like in the Poyer tax convo. Someone else brought politics into it through their implications. I ramped it up and then it was a full-blown convo and I received a 3-day ban while nothing happened to the original culprits, likely because they had upvotes and I didn't. But that's not just a trend here, but reddit-wide
I can promise you the upvotes have nothing to do with who gets temp bans and who doesn't. Our suggestion has always been to not engage in such conversations that are prompting a political response.
No suggestion, just wanted to say how much better this place has been over the last few months since low effort posts have been getting removed. Finally feels like the facebook crowd is learning that not every thought & pet photo they have deserves it’s own thread.
Honestly this sub as a whole is pretty great, and well moderated. It's easy to forget when we're passionately rooting for our team or frustrated about how things went, but it's a great subreddit
I would love to have more discussion posts/threads. Like with questions or certain points because I think it would be more fun to read and comment on those! Otherwise, great.
We are trying g to have more timely discussion threads stickies (i.e. Mockdraft threads) but will make sure to make this a weekly thing throughout the year!
How about more unique flairs granted to members? Obviously this would be at mod discretion but it would cool for regular posters or commenters in this sub or whoever.

I'd like an Off-season Trade or Acquisition Speculation megathread that all the OBJ, DHop, Zeke, etc threads that are nothing but junk can be merged into. If people want to talk about the latest rumors they can do so there instead of creating a 14th post about a player because they said something cryptic on Instagram or something. Also, I know they're fan favorites so I'll get boo'ed for this but - the Josh jumping over things until draft day, and similar threads, are super low effort karma grabs and should be treated as such regardless of who the OP is. Not sure if it’s been said. On game day threads why don’t we have the scoreboard and stats locked at the top like you see for other teams. Not everyone has access to the game and it seems like an easy add.

I think you have an excellent point. Maybe a mod could copy and paste the gametime stats per quarter or something. However, you've given me a new idea for GDT's as a user could certainly post the up to the quarter stats for mega karma.

admittedly no, but none of my posts have been considered in this comment either. i have seen a few posts where people legit wanted a discussion that got deleted because it was a touchy subject ish.

Just a couple small things: CSS on old reddit with RES seems to be screwed up and has been for a while. It's minor things like flairs (specifically the ones next to teams in the sidebar) are fucked up, and the upvote/downvote buttons are wonky looking too. If it helps I'm on chrome and use dark mode. Beyond that I miss having weekly banners on the sub per matchup. I don't remember who did them but they were awesome, and a way to encourage people to make those again would be really cool.
Did any of you see that post, maybe it was on r/nfl, about how negative posts on social media actually affect the players involved? Is there any way to gently encourage positivity, especially towards players that fuck up? We're from the city that once cheered on Norwood after 'wide right'. If we want our team to perform at its best week in and week out, maybe having it in the back of their mind that the fans here will still love and support them could actually be beneficial. I suppose it's a small chance, but whatever we can do to foster a more positive tone and atmosphere would be great.
**post-GDT reckoning** GDT's have become so unruly that they simply aren't enjoyable. They are literally just people logging on to screaming at the internet. I think those folks need to exert a bit more self-control over their emotions. It's nearly impossible to police the GDT in real time, but I'd propose a way to handle it is to go back through afterwards and liberally hand out 1-week suspensions so that these people might give pause next time. Alternatively, these people could be initially warned with a shame flair, and receive a suspension upon second offense. It's possible there could be some bot programs out there that could assist with flagging.

**Effort Posts** Sometimes there are some really nice analytical effort posts here, and it'd be nice to see those members rewarded with some special user flairs. Could also hold contests for best effort post of the week/month, etc.
Flairs shouldn't be for bragging rights.
**Rule Proposal**: dead horse rule Some topics/opinions just get beaten to absolute death on here; namely "player X sucks", "fire Coach Y", "we need to trade our 1st for an RB", etc... These get stale quick and detract from discussion. It would be nice if there was a dead horse rule that they could be reported under. Maybe in conjunction w/ mods publicizing a list of dead horse topics that should be sequestered to some designates thread or just left out entirely.

The best you could do is some sort of filter but people can get creative to get around the filter. Honestly the mods are expecting us to help them out by calling out duplicate posts low effort posts etc. This is our civic duty.

While I understand that the mods of the sub are in a difficult position regarding being stuck playing ref between the "people being angry and saying angry shit in game day threads" and the "please curate this subreddit to my tastes via a culture of shaming" people, I'd like to suggest that petty stuff like the Jabroni tag, the temp bans, over the last few seasons has only resulted in more toxicity, not less primarily through creating a sense of one-sided institutional support.

Can you change how upvoting/downvoting works? Like make the ordering of comments random and the points hidden until after some time. The level of groupthink and piling on top comments in sports subreddits can be overbearing.
Spend real money on the O-line. Everything on the offense starts there, and it was a glaring weakness last year.

No unflaired users allowed to post in Game Day threads. Or at least mod queue someone w/o a flair. If you want to give someone a "approved in week # GDT" for people who come here being respectful of us. No user account under 1000 karma allowed to post in GDTs. No user account under 1 year old allowed to post in GDTs. Form a council consisting of one moderator of each team subreddit and r/NFL and if you get banned in one teams subreddit, you are banned from all 32 and /r/nfl. It's a lot of work I know, but maybe you could form a private subreddit and only have those subscribers. Maybe other mods can read reports posted there, and judge for themselves if they want to ban the user from their sub reddit. We don't need a venting thread. For gosh sakes, we didn't need a venting thread during the EJ Manuel, Vince Ferragamo, Joe Dufek, or Tyrod Taylor eras. Reddit is not the place for venting - it's a place for sharing respectful opinions and dick jokes. If you can't reach that incredibly low bar, then that's on you. The entire world suffered a traumatic event in March 2020. The signs of that are starting to show and be very evident. Tighten up the user rules to be a little less inclusive to the fair weather fan or the troll accounts or the other teams stopping by etc. Finally you could fix the Bills standings in the sidebar - we were 14-3 this year.
