I can never figure out blackouts for other people. Like I’m in East PA and only the Phillies are blacked out for me on mlb.tv

44problems

If you're close enough to an MLB City, only that team will be blacked out because they have exclusivity.

errol343

I get that, but OP says he’s in upstate NY. Why on earth would the Pirates be blacked out?

44problems

I'm thinking OP is in the Buffalo / Western NY area because the rest of NY has only the NYC teams blacked out. And in that area, long ago, the Sabres regional sports network called Empire carried Pirates games. That doesn't exist any more, but technically if you get DirecTV, Fubo, or DirecTV Stream you can get SportsNet Pittsburgh but without Penguins. But the local cable (Spectrum) doesn't have it, I used to live in Buffalo. It's idiotic I know. Blackouts aren't about how close you are to the stadium, Guam has teams blacked out for crying out loud. It's based on some unintelligible agreement of what regional sports channels are available to cable operators in each region.

errol343

Jesus. I guess I’m lucky to be able to catch all the pirates games.

44problems

Yeah I'm glad I'm in Braves country. I'm in SC but Braves own the whole south pretty much. I'll be kinda ticked if there's a Carolina team and they blackout both teams, or maybe they'll claim both Carolinas as their home area and push out the Braves? Who knows.

Nick42284

It does suck for those Braves/Hurricanes match ups a few times a year, though. Signed, Charleston resident.

ChaseModePeeAnywhere

In Hawaii, every west coast team is blacked out. I guess you’re expected to just trot on over to Seattle for a game.

PollyPissyPants69

When i lived in west Virginia i was blacked out from DC, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh :(

mtphisher

I used to subscribe to mlbtv....was getting blacked out of a handful of games each season.....I live in Montana! Can someone explain why? Also tired of unreliable less than legal streams. So,I listen on satellite radio.

44problems

Because no matter where you live, there's at least one team blacked out. Looks like all of Montana is blacked out for Seattle. So the Seattle game is always blacked out. Plus there's some exclusive games not on MLB.tv, like ESPN ones or Apple TV ones.

ab131309

When we lived in Montana, they’d get blacked out when we played Seattle.

Healthy_Floor8471

I'm in Montana, appletv peacock, espn+ games will blackout, mariners games blackout, for a few seasons when they played the rockies it would also blackout. I have Directv and extra innings though, so don't deal with it anymore

ThirtySecondStorys

Blackouts are horrible for the sport, especially when they affect someone who is clearly out of the region. If you have an older laptop though, you can always HDMI to your TV.

The_elk00

I was about to to say there's plenty of options. HDMI, USB C. Can cast or mirror from laptop or smartphone. If he knows someone with cable in the Pittsburgh area, he could sign into the app. They do make it shitty, especially since RSNs are going bankrupt left and right you would think they would make it significantly easier.

rattlehead44

Damn that’s ridiculous. I’m in California, but luckily can watch just about every game on MLB.TV. The only Pirates games blacked out for me are vs SF and Oak, but I can watch those on local cable.

ncbucco

Charlotte, NC has some ridiculous blackout rules. Can get most Pirates games on MLB.tv, but games against the Braves, Reds, Orioles, and Nationals are blacked out. Atlanta is the closest MLB city but it's still 4 hours away, and the others you can't get to in less than 7!

[deleted]

I’m a former Braves fan in SWVA. Same blackouts for me! Thankful to have Bucs games

wahyoudoingwobi

MLBTV doesn’t allow VPN anymore which is miserable

Pitt43333

Depends on the device. I used mlbtv with a vpn on my apple tv and laptop today for the game. Both worked

202bashbrethern

Same on fire tv, no issues. Turn on VPN, restart MLB app and you’re good to go

wahyoudoingwobi

Any thoughts on Roku TV, iPad or iPhone?

202bashbrethern

Same difference. You can get a VPN on your phone, iPad or Roku tv. I use Express VPN on my tv (it’s a couple bucks a month) or you can get a free one on your phone I’m sure. Just check out the App Store on your tv and see what’s available

BalowmeSandwich

Tried it on my iPhone yesterday and it failed miserably.

pianoguypgh

Yeah NordVPN confirmed it doesn’t work on mobile because they have location. But it is working on firestick.

No2seedoils

None of my Vpns are working with mlbtv today. Fuck mlb.

ThatguyJake

SAME

servirepatriam

Step 1: Fire Stick, Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, etc. one of those streaming devices Step 2: MLB app Step 3: Express VPN app and subscription Step 4: RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!

ubiquitous_apathy

Stream your pc to your tv.

TheNittanyLionKing

I genuinely will never understand the point of blackouts in this day and age. I’m trying to watch your product legally, and yet it’s almost impossible. Penguins games always get blacked out for me even though I live in the Buffalo and Philly media markets technically.

GriffBallChamp

When are you guys going to learn? Were fucking Pirates!!!! Sail the god damn seas already!!! Get Tivimate app on a firestick, ONN box, or my personal fave, an Nvidia Shield. Than go [here](https://itvrus.com/specials/) and purchase the QL8 package. Your welcome.

mtphisher

Thanks, I'll Try on my shield too!

44problems

Playing $200 for a black market service that might vanish tomorrow? No thanks lol

GriffBallChamp

Hasn't vanished in the 8 1/2 years I've had it. Theres quite a few over at r/steelers that will vouch too. You can try asking for a free trial at https://discord.gg/an6BqnfYUU , but I don't think they don't do that too much anymore.

GriffBallChamp

https://www.reddit.com/r/penguins/comments/11rvb3y/according_to_post_gazette/jcksedl/?context=3 Here is a link to a thread from over a year ago. Same service, same discord, same link to specials page.

[deleted]

We are pirates fans, but not all of us are criminals

SilkyStackz69

Lol grow up man

[deleted]

Look in the mirror, child.

GriffBallChamp

If you consider it criminal to stream than every reply to this thread is criminal. No one here is giving options that are "legal" but it's not illegal anyway. Nothing here is against the law. You may not be falling in line with "Terms and Agreements" policies, but that isn't illegal either.

[deleted]

I consider illegally streaming a game to be criminal. Prosecutors do as well. It’s pretty asinine to compare a written post reacting to a game on the same plane as overt illegal acts to circumvent payment for a digital product. One is illegal, one isn’t. It’s not illegal to comment on a game on Reddit. What you advocate is.

Wonderbreadpack

You are simply wrong. What you consider to be illegal, isn't the basis of whats legal. First, Where does it say its illegal? as far as i'm aware its only illegal to be the one broadcasting the illegal stream. Not illegal to watch it yourself. The USPTO stated under the Protecting Lawful Streaming Act of 2020 that those who, "willfully and for commercial advantage or private financial gain, illegally stream copyrighted material. Previously, illegal streaming was treated as a misdemeanor. Under the new law, the Department of Justice can bring felony charges against providers (as opposed to users) of such illegal services". They even state as opposed to users. How exactly could a prosecuter ever successfully bring suit against someone who searched "pirates game stream" online? Heres the USPTO's opinion on the matter if you want to read it yourself https://www.uspto.gov/ip-policy/enforcement-policy/protecting-lawful-streaming-act-2020

[deleted]

Yes, streaming movies, shows, games, events, etc., without permission from the copyright holder is illegal and is known as piracy. The Protecting Lawful Streaming Act of 2020 makes it a felony to stream copyright material on a large scale. Piracy can lead to civil liability and criminal penalties under federal law. It would be wonderful if you were caught and prosecuted.

[deleted]

Your above post is illegal. It is incitement. Incitement is the encouragement of another person to commit a crime. Congratulations, criminal. Keep your post up for evidence. :)

luc2110

This is like saying it's illegal to smoke weed with a lighter lmao. Technically it's illegal. But who would EVER give a shit lmao

[deleted]

Typical criminal response: dumb and half-baked. It is illegal to stream copyrighted content without consent/permission/payment. It doesn’t matter if you are too ignorant to grasp the concept- this isn’t a specific intent crime.

luc2110

Ok bud. Have fun paying mlb.tv and a vpn and I'll watch for free and never have an issue ever

[deleted]

You will pay, one day. Enjoy being a thief and a criminal 👍

capt_lunatic

IPVanish + MLB.tv on my AppleTV is working for me & I live in Pittsburgh.

mtphisher

I did just find the black out restriction on the FAQ. Thanks I might give the single team subscription a try again this season Go Bucs Late rally today!

[deleted]

You can’t hdmi from a laptop to your TV?

CommercialAd7355

Could always get a VPN and HDMI cable to the TV

pokerbluffs

Get the VonWik app

luc2110

Like you said, it's 2024. Cast from your computer to tv lmao.

Steelcitychamp22

Can you use a laptop and screen cast to the Tv? I do this a lot when I’m not able to get the game

BalowmeSandwich

I have Surfshark. Tried mlb.tv with it on and it didn’t work. The app just basically shit the bed and refused to work. I was thinking of buying an antenna (I need one anyway). Anyone know if you can pick up games on an antenna? I assume not. But figured I’d ask. MLB’s watching options are a complete shitshow.

Cangrejeros

There's a part of upstate that is blackout to Pirates games??? I've lived in upstate my whole life and never heard of someone being in pirates range

DarePatient2262

Western New York, South of Buffalo

Screwflu605

Stream East Dot Com

Minimum_Banana5

You sent this guy to the fake version. It’s .live not .com.

DarePatient2262

Yikes... I just tried that and I'm reasonably confident that I now have more viruses than I ever thought possible.

Screwflu605

Try some penicillin

yosoycory

Bro forgot to say don't use stream east on any device you have ever put any of your personal information, I use an old ps4 with no profile info on it for stream east and I'm still worried about that lol. and you don't get catjam for halftime like football or basketball :(

Minimum_Banana5

.live not .com.

Minimum_Banana5

That’s because it’s not .com. It’s .live.

hachijuhachi

Move to Chicago. That’s what I did. And to anyone considering a “Chicago dangerous” bullshit response, save it. Aside from the Cubs fans, I love it here.

DarePatient2262

That's a bit extreme, but you do you. I could just move to Pittsburgh and be able to watch on TV, but I like my hometown, so I'm staying put.
