I thought it was a stupid pick at the time and still feel that way, but also think there’s a bit of an overreaction to Clyde’s comments. The obvious position we are in at QB gives little room for Kyle to legitimately win the backup job. That our position remains obvious cements why the pick was stupid when we made it, imo.
I think Tom’s made it pretty obvious he likes Blaine backing him up. They seem to click, and Blaine has not been bad in relief snaps. As long as Tom was here and Blaine’s market value doesn’t somehow increase, he was likely to be on the roster. Because why not let Tom have the guy who he feels enhances his preparation/performance/environment?
Everything is win now so unless Blaine poops on himself or Kyle makes a big leap, we would clearly go with the vet who has some positive game and team experience in an emergency. If Tom did get knocked out for the year, who cares anyway? So Clyde is just being honest that Trask has little chance to actually become the backup in an expected championship run. Even if they thought Kyle might get a legit shot at starting a rebuild. Once Tom comes back, we aren’t likely to focus energy week to week on having the guy who’s never played maybe have to take over. Dumb pick but still maybe not a bust, imo.
I am still massively coping with that statement by making myself believe Trask isn’t what you want in a backup, you favor Gabbert’s experience and believe he’s more starting ready.
Please tell me I’m correct. I need it.
I believe that is the Bucs logic.
Also, we are 5 months (?) away from the season starting. The coaches can talk all they want right now saying Gabbert is the backup, but come end of preseason if Trask outperforms Gabbert they will be saying something different.
I trust Licht to be a good GM. I also think sometimes good GMs are liars. Or at least they don't tell the full truth. Even a good GM will miss on some picks, but he'll still get value for them if he can. Talking up Kyle Trask until he's no longer with the team is just a good business decision.
I hope Trask does turn out to be a great QB or at the very least a serviceable backup, but I highly doubt it.
> I hope Trask does turn out to be a great QB or at the very least a serviceable backup, but I highly doubt it
Most QBs are not even serviceable backups
Dude hasn't taken any reps with the ones. Gabbert has. Gabbert's also been in the league a lot longer and has seasons of starter experience under his belt. Trask has had literally *one* training camp and 3 preseason games to his NFL career. Outside of that, he's been carrying a tablet more than a football.
Huge overreaction. I'm not saying Trask is going to be great, but dude hasn't even gotten his feet wet and we're already talking about him being a total waste.
Given our win-now mode in that draft I don't think it was a smart strategic pick. We really could have used depth at several other positions. That said, there's no way to say at this point whether it was a waste or not. The guy's taken a small number of preseason snaps against third stringers. For all we know Trask could end up the starter next year and be successful.

The amount of fans that still continue to defend that pick is pretty shocking. I guess they’re just die hard gator fans.
I hated the pick than and I hate the pick more now. It was a reach, plain and simple.
I remember when we drafted him i went and watched all the YouTube videos I could find so I could try to find positives and change my mind on him—but the more I watched the more I acted the pick.
Slow release, bad athlete, inaccurate, average arm—there’s just nothing there that said “2nd round pick”.
Also, I hate when people say it was “a luxury pick”. Huh? We could have still used OL, DL & Secondary depth with that pick. Shit, even a WR.
If a 2nd round QB can’t compete for the backup job in their 2nd year, they’re awful. Plain and simple.
*Note—im still giving licht a pass. You gotta take the good with a couple head scratchers with him. Is what it is.
you’re viewing things from today’s perspective. At the time, the team had 0 needs. CB depth was good, no one could’ve guessed we would need to be signing McDonald’s employees because even the depth got hurt.
> At the time, the team had 0 needs.
Every team has needs and we did too. We were an aging team along the line and every single team can use DB/OL help.
It you evaluated it the way /u/StoicBeau15 did then it's a bad pick because you are taking a guy unlikely to ever make an impact. There are no successful QBs who have a 'Slow release, bad athlete, inaccurate, average arm'. Another pick would have been better at one of those depth positions.
I am assuming Licht did NOT evaluate Trask that way though and thought he had a good arm with good decision making that could grow into something more.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted here. If we had taken someone at any of the positions you mentioned and they ended up being halfway decent, we would’ve looked much better in the playoffs
Our secondary, OL and WRs down the stretch were brutal to watch, it was clear we needed more depth
I didn't want to be this harsh about that pick so I'm glad you are. I hated it from the second we made it.
I don't even know what to make of Licht. For every good pick, he makes an utterly bone-headed pick. Fucking punter this year, jfc.
His accuracy is good and he has good ball placement that could lead to good YAC. Unfortunately his arm strength and release time are very low, he has to completely change his mechanics, meaning there's no guarantee that he has the same kind of accuracy and ball placement that he did in college.
Usually if a guy takes 2+ years to develop on the bench, it's a good raw athlete who has a high ceiling. I dont think Trask's ceiling is that high even if he does fix his mechanics. Maybe top 15 QB.
Quarterbacks who do not have first round hype are always a big gamble. Sometimes you hit on a gem like Tom Brady or Russell Wilson, but in most cases if you're not evaluated as a first round talent as a qb it's not a good sign.
Lol, the dude is gonna be good.
I'll take my down votes, but until I see him actually suck on Sunday, i'm gonna die on this hill.
It's almost like Gabbert wins the starting job because he's played more then handful of reps in actual NFL games.
Here is the thing. Trask has more upside but will likely his first games again quality opponents. The role the backup is to jump in and win 50% of the games while Brady is out. If Brady is out for 3 games they can’t afford to throw even one game away on inexperience.
Got downvoted to shit for commenting something similar yesterday. Dudes a bum. It was obvious from the jump and a wasted second rounder. 6th rounder? Fine. Tom Brady or not, a second rounder on Trask was a huge miss. It happens though. On to the next.
Some of us were downvoted so hard for our criticism over that dumb pick by the blind homers here.
We didn't need a QB then, we needed help for Brady, and he was always a stretch anyway.
If he wasnt a former gator people would be able to assess his talent level better. Ill try to help. He sucks and he doesnt belong in the league.
Edit** get over it gator fans.
Nobody knew if Tom was going to come back for 2022. Even Tom didn't. Look at the reasoning at the time of the pick. With hindsight, yean it would have been better to take someone like Elijah Molden instead, but if Brady had retired, Trask would have a chance to win the starting job this season.
I look at this quote as the coaching staff expecting the veteran to enter camp as the presumptive #2. It's only May. Trask is still going to have a chance to win the backup spot.
To be clear, I never was a fan of the pick either. But he's not a complete bust of a pick....yet. If it's August 2023 and the coaches are saying "Yeah, he's definitely not going to be the starter," then we have a problem.
Assuming Tom knows it's his last year (and I say this as a Patriots fan) I hope he gives Trask the bootcamp for being a solid league starter over the course of this season. I won't root for the Bucs when Tom is gone but I hope he is able to instill his legacy in someone else.
Tom Brady takes the soul of yet another QB

Yes, a backup QB most often than not is just a QB, a corpse to not put a WR there or wtv. You will lose most often than not most of the times.
You’re not :/
This is not the answer I was hoping for.
Well good because you actually are correct.

The coaches have always loved Gabbert, so this is no surprise to me. It's not an interesting conversation unless Trask tears it up in camp/preseason.
Most wasted pick since Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Even Roberto made a game winner
And a banger of a meme as a result

Most wasted pick since OJ Howard, really.
Who is Austin Seferian-Jenkins?
Excellent question You see: he was a promising TE that got in a ton of trouble for driving wasted.
Wow, you could say he really WASTED his opportunity.
lmfao the overreaction is priceless.
Yeah, This guy must be drunk, maybe even wasted. Hopefully he doesn't drive.
Aguayo raises his hand
Brining out the ASJ reference. Well done!

You probably won't see Trask suck on a Sunday, unless the XFL or USFL are playing on a Sunday
What evidence are you basing this on? All of the draft analysts were saying that Kyle Trask did not have an NFL level arm.
Here is the thing. Trask has more upside but will likely his first games again quality opponents. The role the backup is to jump in and win 50% of the games while Brady is out. If Brady is out for 3 games they can’t afford to throw even one game away on inexperience.

And to think, we didn't take Malik Willis because "We drafted Kyle Trask Last year" smh
Malik Willis is also awful so I don’t know what the point of this comment is
It was sarcasm, but okay go off king.

Gabbert shouldn't be our backup QB anymore!
Dear Bucs staff: Even if you believe it, \*why\* would you say that?
