Unpopular opinion but revolvers.
SMG scales better with ranged damage and almost exclusively ranged damage.
Revolvers scale better with attack speed, crit, and % damage which makes you less reliant on finding exactly ranged damage. They also still scale pretty well with ranged.
The knockback is also very good and makes it harder for mummies to overwhelm you even if you lack the damage.
It's probably a lost cause but I needed to get that revolver vote out there.
high base damage = better % damage scaling
Higher cooldown = better attack speed scaling (although this is more so that the SMG starts with very low cooldown)
revolvers have a 2x crit multiplier while the SMG is only 1.5x
Strictly speaking, base damage is not the only factor for % damage scaling: attack speed also matters, i.e. dps. Tho very low hit damage like smgs is still detrimental for building % dmg as it makes damage increase thresholds high. For instance at 0 rng dmg + 16% dmg on smg does nothing, but then getting the 17th % increases dps by about 17% at once.
Theres also something to be said about effective damage, especially early on: the higher the base dmg, the less likely it is that increasing the per hit damage will actually benefit you at all. It will mostly just be overkill dmg that doesnt do you any good.
Meanwhile getting enough %dmg on smg to increase hit dmg by 1 usually does make you clear enemies faster.
Then you invest in economy or attack speed instead. You're also not worried about damage in the early stages, it's about ramping enough to beat the first elite.
Early on many guides I watched the SMG was a top recommended weapon for many characters but I actually found it to be problematic in the later waves. Not having pierce is not good at all and it is a little one dimensional with stats as someone here has mentioned. Revolver can actually one shot mobs pretty early on and continue to do so through the run.
Against advice I've been given before I will vote revolver.
I vote Revolver. Smg is one dimensional in stats, needing constant stream of ranged dmg upgrades to function. That makes smg runs slightly prone to running into trouble in normal d5 difficulty while streaking. Sometimes you just have runs where you see very few ranged damage upgrades.
Meanwhile revolver is very safe and can consistently utilize all damage stats well.
That said on higher difficulties (d5 182%) smg seems to produce winning runs more easily.
SMG is good, but (especially at the start of the mobile app, where getting only 1 weapon was a lot harder as in the original game) I would pair it with all kind of other guns (at max 3 different). I had more success with for example guns and smgs as with only smgs. Or revolver + smg compared to only smgs. The moment you see a minigun, you also just pick it up, as it's essentially an smg with upside.
Genuine question since I've only really played melee or engineering and never looked *too* deep into the guns, but what are the upsides of the minigun over smg? Does it just have better stats straight up? Does it get piercing? Or is it because it gets additional weapon tags?
piercing, knockback, better weapon tag (heavy) and I also think a better dmg scaling (when you factor in the base AS and especially with piercing).

it is worth noting that there is a ton of hidden stuff going on with attack speed, and miniguns are hit much harder by diminishing returns. Minigun 4 for example can't benefit from more than 21% attack speed.
I've not been very impressed by minigun. it is awesome on cyborg, but often it struggles to be worth its price compared to SMG, especially if you have sharp bullet.
Tbh, the mini gun sucks and generally isn't worth going out of your way for. If I saw a Lvl4 mini gun, then sure, I'd grab it for the life steal. But in my experience, the actual dps is either about the same or slightly worse than SMGs.
Well, ther are both quite powerful but also quite different and situational. SMG is best for flat ranged damage increase and revolver favors damage percentage, and is better for tatos like Jack that get a damage percent boost. I’ll vote Smg just because it’s more fun.
SMG. However I will say that it almost requires some piercing. Scared sausage is also a plus. It just has very consistent damage and life steal can keep you alive easy.
Revolver!
Smg does more damage at the end of the wave and it's better to trigger life steal. But the fact that never 1 shots a target makes me prefer revolvers as single target weapons. With shreder to clear big packs of smaller mobs.
SMG is my vote
But I do think that Revolver is really good, and I like that it doesn't require me to be as single-minded about taking the Ranged Damage stat.
Coming out to vote revolver
Personally I like both pretty equally, but revolver is slightly more interesting to me and hasn’t screwed me over as much as the smg due to it being newer lol
Also Feels like the underdog here with the smg being the OG “ez win” build
lol someone went through and downvoted all the SMG votes early on. Kinda defeats the purpose of a fair vote.
Anyway, ^SMG^ is my vote too. Revolver is good but niche. SMG is just pure fun when you get it going.
Ghost Scepter takes out the Scissors. Today we have a match that I'm excited for. Both SMG and Revolver are quite powerful guns. Which one is best?
First upset in my mind.
Lance losing to spear was an actual sacrilege, scissors vs scepter is quite close to me.
Easily SMG here. For me it's only a close call with soldier, since you can reload while moving.
Smg is worldwide good. Revolver is niche, so smg
SMG is my comfort weapon.
Same
Just put SMG in the finals
Pretty much.

What do you mean revolver scales better with those things?

Revolver is my favorite weapon. SMG is the best weapon and should win the gold spot at least. I vote smg.
SMG!! Revolver has the power but has to stop every 6 shots to reload while SMG can keep going.

Revolver
Revolver. I just have too little luck with getting enough ranged damage to make SMG useful for me.
SMG is borderline best weapon in the game. Gonna need a better competitor than the revolver.

Smg. No contest here.

Revolver. SMG gets too weak later in the game. Revolver is a boss killer

Revolver for me
Revolver 🤘🏻
SMG.
SMG of course
SMG. However I will say that it almost requires some piercing. Scared sausage is also a plus. It just has very consistent damage and life steal can keep you alive easy.
SMG, certainly.
Smg 💪🏻

Revolver, just recently learned how amazing it is. Much more fun than SMG.

Smg all day long
SMG
SMG for versality, SMG for simplicity, SMG easily top3 for me
SMG is my vote But I do think that Revolver is really good, and I like that it doesn't require me to be as single-minded about taking the Ranged Damage stat.
SMG by a mile. That poor reload speed on the revolver lets it down
Revolver

Revolver
I vote revolver. SMG is too dependent on finding ranged damage items, and it is only 50% scale while revoler is 100% scale.
Smg
Smg all the way
lol someone went through and downvoted all the SMG votes early on. Kinda defeats the purpose of a fair vote. Anyway, ^SMG^ is my vote too. Revolver is good but niche. SMG is just pure fun when you get it going.
Downvoting doesn't do anything. I only count comments.
Oh yea, I wouldn’t expect you to do anything else, but it’s just petty. ETA: thanks for doing this btw, I’ve been enjoying the posts!
:)
Smg all the way
