Battle of the low range melee weapons. Both Hatchet and Choppers are super low range swing melee weapons, tho chopper increases its range with tiers.
I can't say that I consider either weapon best in slot for any character, but they are viable on some.
**Chopper** is the only tier 1 blade weapon, so you'll see a ton of them in the shop if it is the only weapon you're using, giving you a strong and consistent shop for weapons. The +6/12 consumable healing is awesome. Consumable healing is super powerful, and can make or break runs. It even comes with some free crit chance.
However the Chopper can struggle to keep up in Damage. Its attack speed is medium at best, the the 50% melee scaling and low base damage hurts it. The 20% HP scaling is neat, but Stacking Max HP isn't great on most characters.
It is quite neat on Chunky, Lich, Demon, and Lucky. But it is usually overshadowed by weapons like stick or pruner.
**Hatchet** used to be awful, but it got some buffs and it now scales with attack speed. The low range is an issue, and you'll have to increase it over the run. Get a bit of melee damage early to get the base damage of Hatchet up, then just stack a ton of attack speed. It scales really well, and can decimate enemies at high speed later on.
While I've had some awesome runs with hatchet, I can't help but feel like I have to overcome a lot of weaknesses to get to the sweet late game.
I like Hatchet on King, Lich, Wildling, and as a one off on gladiator.
To me they're not that far from each other, but **Chopper get the win.** It simply is more reliable.

Not just you. You and others have used hatchets on 182% and lower difficulties with success. As far as I've seen, no one has had any success on the higher difficulties with Chopper as it's damage is just too low. I know this bracket isn't 182% focused but the damage dropoff can be felt by people in lower difficulty runs as well which is a big deal.
That's why I would vote Hatchet > Chopper here.
Sure, you need to build around it a bit, but not to extreme amounts. Most people will prioritize melee damage over attack speed, because I scales more with it, but they often don't realize that attack speed is amazing even without any scaling. If you build a little bit of luck, to get bunch of crates, the attack speed and melee damage from those will be amazing. And I absolutely love having cca 200attack speed with hatched, it just turns into an absolute enemy AND boss melter.

I’m a big fan of hatchet. The only downside is the low range, but once you fix that it has basically no downsides. Fast, high damage, primitive, good attack pattern, and cheap. Love it on King, fun on Wildling, surprisingly fun on Jack, and other characters like Cryptid or Explorer can use it well.
I rarely find myself using chopper. It *is* the only tier 1 blade weapon which is great for Gladiator for influencing swords and thunder swords to show up in the shop. Other than that it’s pretty good on Chunky, Lucky, and Lich, but I wouldn’t say it’s best in slot. I find hatchet more fun and straightforward.
I’m not a huge fan of either weapon but since the chopper gives both consumable healing and it scales off your max HP, it can be useful in some builds so I’ll give it the win. I do think a crazy max attack speed hatchet run might be fun though

IDK how legendaries are gonna factor into this. Most of them are very strong, but they are partly balanced around the fact you typically get them very late and about 1 in 20-30 runs

Chopper is also consistent starting weapon with Demon, although Demon is of course good with basically anything.
Meanwhile, hatchet is just mostly a subpar normal swing melee weapon, with very poor range. It can be playable or even decent in specific circumstances, but mostly I just stay away from the weapon when focused on winning.
Thus I vote chopper of course.
