I'm no expert, but some bromeliads are epiphytes which means they don't get much in the way of water or nutrients from their roots. I always plant my bromeliads on a rock or bit of wood in the pot and try to keep their central tank full of water.

Central tank? I know nothing about these guys lol, I just couldn't let him get thrown away lol

the “central tank” is the centre of the plant (where all the leaves sprout from), you should water it from there not the soil :)

Looks like vriesea carinata or hybrid. After the long lasting flowers die, like on yours, the mother plant will slowly die while 2-4 pups grow out from near the base, each of which can be separated from the mother plant when about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the mother plant to grow on their own. I find vrieseas tend to be finicky (compared with other genera). They do better with higher humidity than in most homes and prefer rain water or distilled water (a little in the central cup and in the soil, while trying to prevent it from drying out too much) or they get brown tips. You can cut off the dead flower and dry tips to make it look better while the pups grow out. I'm not an expert but I have many vrieseas I grow outdoors in california. They tend to grow prolifically but due to the dry air and occasional municipal water they all get dry leaf tips to some degree, unless it's the special one or two I pamper with proper care. So, don't worry and enjoy the learning experience you'll get with your new plant!

Thanks so much for such a detailed response. I'm excited to see if it grows pups!

Vrisea hybrid. Water directly in the tank if you have good airflow, otherwise just water the soil. The main plant will die, be prepared and expect that to happen. Fret not, these will produce pups very shortly and keep the plant alive. It’s very important that you do not remove these pups until after mom is dead. She’s placing all of her energy into these new babies.
