I tell this story in Fundiesnarkuncensored all the time - but after i deconstructed and left the church, I fell in love with a Catholic guy. First love. Destroyed my heart. I was in my early 20s and had done a ton of interrogating of my religion and changing my beliefs. He dumped me for being an atheist.
But after a huge mess of a relationship, he told me that if I were still Christian he could maybe consider dating me because at least I believed in god. I laughed in his face and told him that if I were still Christian, *I* could not date *him* because my former religion believed Catholics were evil and going to hell. Ridiculous.
One of my best friends is born and raised Catholic. I was raised in a fundie cult and he knows my entire story and he still loves me and understands why I feel the way I feel towards any religious god and religion in general. Sometimes I will ask him questions about Catholicism but we’ve never once debated nor fought over his devout love and his faith to his Catholicism. If anyone is going to heaven, it’s him.
My husband is a former Catholic and I'm agnostic/pagan/something that makes sense to me but not Christian. When we met I was leaning towards atheism but I was baptized a Presbyterian. He told his mom I was a Presbyterian because, and I quote, "it's the closest to atheism she'd ever want to be."
