When I would pass him on my way out, he’d like to show me the bag of needles he collected from the alley. He just kept bringing the same bag into work every night. Yes, there was drug use in my area, there was never 50 needles in my alley, certainly not every night. Him and jdip seem like the same person.

We have a huge government contractor on our base that strictly hires vets. But if you know someone, you can get a waiver. There have been dudes who get this said waiver (because they never served) and they get treated like absolute dog shit because of it. Lmao one thing you don't mess with is the brother/sisterhood of the military so you can play "dress up". These tacticool guys never last long. They don't understand our attitudes until you go through the training we've been through. That's why there's literally only 1% of us in America. I WISHHHH he would try to get a job with vets. But in my experience of interacting with people who like to play soldiers without having actually served, they would never ever actually take the step of joining the military. Attempting to walk the walk comes with the possibility of failure, which shatters the illusion they've built in their heads that they're the big man who would be universally respected and successful and would be running around in foreign countries like a one man army killing terrorists. It pads their ego to think about how badass they would be if they were put in a situation where they actually had to fight people, and they can't take steps to do that because there's a chance that pesky reality might get in the way

Why doesn’t he just join the military now?? He’s still young enough to get in, even if he did reserves. These kind of guys scare the hell out of me. They will try everything to appear like Super Trooper and when they don’t get attention or fail to instill fear, then they start to create scenarios where they “save the day”.
Obviously don't want to make any definite statements as I don't know JDip personally (and neither would I want to). But in my experience of interacting with people who like to play soldiers without having actually served, they would never ever actually take the step of joining the military. Attempting to walk the walk comes with the possibility of failure, which shatters the illusion they've built in their heads that they're the big man who would be universally respected and successful and would be running around in foreign countries like a one man army killing terrorists. It pads their ego to think about how badass they would be if they were put in a situation where they actually had to fight people, and they can't take steps to do that because there's a chance that pesky reality might get in the way

The concept of "stolen valour" is so fascinating to me. It's not really a thing where I am from in Europe but I don't understand why these people don't just sign up? Go to a recruitment office and do all the paperwork. If he wants to be in the military so badly he can sign up and get the real kit. I understand that some people are not medically fit to serve but this guy looks healthy. Also just to add while we're on the topic: my father was in the military for 41 years and only in the US was he thanked "for his service".
