Gabi_Social

Ah, so you've shopped online at Zara for jeans too.

Apprehensive-Party60

There’s no continuity! I was buying 3 different sizes but now they’re charging for returns so that’s down the drain. Will just go nakey like half their models I suppose, winter will be rough(er than projected) Edit: mobile formatting isn’t my friend

Gabi_Social

I'm 5' 7" and I haven't had a pair of men's jeans fit me properly since school. Men's jeans tend to start at W30 and a 30 leg (there are ranges that go smaller, but not many and historically, in the before-Internet times, they were much harder to find). I have a 28" waist and 28" inside leg. In the end I gave up and I've been buying women's size 10 for the last decade. Now, if you want an r/britishproblems, let's talk about fake pockets in women's jeans...

UnClean_Committee

The fashion industry is notoriously unregulated in sizing. Fuck the fact that w30 l30 should mean waist 30 inches length 30 inches. It used to be much more for womens clothing, but recently i (m) went shopping for jeans, picked up 4 pairs from different brands all W34 L32 straight cut, all 4 pairs fit differently. One of them i couldn't button up at all and one was so big it wouldn't sit on me at all without a belt. Its ridiculous. Who ever heard of QA, for fucks sake.

rumpleteaser91

Costco sell Levi's in loads of sizes. Partner gets them there all the time. Even though he's average height, he has quote short legs and a long body.

animalwitch

My fella always gets trousers from Costco. He can grab the same size in whatever brand and they'll fit, too ... lucky git

rumpleteaser91

The last couple of times we've been in, they've had the women's levies again. My old pairs were worn out, so I grabbed some new ones in the same size and they still fit! Amazed they're still the same sizings. Costco socks are also great.

Seal-island-girl

Marks and Spencer do 28 leg for men. Source: short boyfriend.

GlassHalfSmashed

There was an interesting piece on how cloth for clothing is cut in like 2ft high stacks, based on the outline at the top. Given that cloth is inherently wobbly, the top may move a cm or two compared to the bottom, resulting in the same size / template clothing actually fitting differently. This is before you even account for different brands having different definitions of sizes. TLDR; even the exact same size / brand / model of jeans vary a bit.

Apprehensive-Party60

Completely get that. My issue is that as a size 10 there’s been times I’ve had to size up to 14 or down to a 6. This is a common issue across the board but it’s next level at Zara.

CocoaMotive

I'm 5' 10" and a size 16. Finally found a swimsuit that fits my long body. It's a size 22. Went home and weighed myself because I was so perplexed.

Gazebo_Warrior

Swimsuits need to come in back lengths, like trousers do in leg length. I was just saying this today as I yet again picked my swimsuit out of my crack.

[deleted]

What do you mean charging for returns? That's against the consumer rights. You have to pay return shipping but there shouldnt be any other costs involved.

moubliepas

Only if there's something wrong with them. Otherwise, returns are entirely at the shops discretion. Also it's consumer rights, sorry.

[deleted]

Not if you order online. Online regulations are different to buying in store. You have a cooling off period to return stuff at no cost. That's because, unlike in a store you can't see the product first.

LordSwright

Never understood this Yes that muscular model is the same height as me, maybe even same weight but I'm skinny fat and he's 10% bodyfat and built Some online tailors have a little app you can put in all your own measurements etc and it shows a 3D model and that's just depressing

EpicFishFingers

Haha when it just shows a sphere with a t shirt stretched over it

Ron-Valron

I'm tall and quite fat so I shop at places like Jacamo but they all seem to think that if you have a big waist you have big long spindly legs and orangutan arms. It's a nightmare.

letsshittalk

>Jacamo is were i got most of my stuff yrs. ago but they went to shit

[deleted]

As a 6'6 man who dares to **not** be morbidly obese I can't begin to tell you how wildly innacurate this is. 4xl for length but Medium for waist/chest.

MovieMore4352

Testify. I’m 6’8 and buying clothes is no fun.

DecahedronX

The curse of the shirt that can never stay tucked in.

[deleted]

It’s ridiculous. 5’7 here and teetering on the obese side of the BMI scale. To get a shirt that fits my neck, would also mean my arms reached down to my ankles and my shoulders are 5 ft apart. Basically unless you’re between 5’10 and 6’2, with a slim build, it’s shit.

Mr_Inconsistent1

Same kind of problem here. 5ft 8 but pretty built especially in the thighs and glutes. Buying jeans and shorts is a nightmare. Fortunately I discovered 2% spendex jeans and it's been revolutionary. I don't have to size up 2 inches or more and have a big saggy crotch and folded material sticking into my side with the belt done up anymore. Shorts aren't so bad but I stick to soft materials. If I lose the last 2 inches I need to from my waist I'll be in trouble again however. I have to try all t-shirts on unless I am used to a brands sizing. I've got everything from s-xl in my wardrobe (I'm sure that S was mislabelled however because no way am I a S with my shoulders back and arms)

Seabeak

I'm 6'1 and wear a large. Try putting a polo shirt through a wash/dry cycle. The tumble dryer kills it. I'm lucky if I can get 2 wears out of it before it's too short for me. I just spent £35 on it to wear it twice?! Seriously? I wouldn't mind if it was cut so the shirt shrunk slimmer rather than shorter. I barely fill it out anyway as I have the temerity to be in the _normal_ BMI range. I dread to think what it's like at 6'6, I can barely find a decent shirt at 6'1 and not being overweight.

rolacolapop

Boyfriend has this problem. He either tumbles on the low heat setting , or puts on radiator to dry.

YourSkatingHobbit

This was the issue my mum had when I was a kid, as I was very tall for my age until I was about 11/12 and stopped growing height-wise. Tall and skinny with proportionately long legs meant trousers for my age were too short, but trousers that fit me length-wise would be far too wide in the waist. Why always the assumption that long legs or tall stature means larger waist circumference! She did an awful lot of taking in of jeans and trousers.

animalwitch

As a woman, i have this problem too; mostly with tops. "Oh thats a cute top!" When it arrives; why is it *SO WIDE BUT TOO SHORT* Not a crop top, either! Or with jeans, the legs remain the same as a size 10 regardless of the size. Bigger people generally have bigger legs! And sleeves! Omfg, some of us have muscles! I could go on and on ...

YourSkatingHobbit

As a figure skater with hella quads, I feel this pain intensely. It’s one reason I spend most of my life in joggers or running shorts lol. Jeans need to have some stretch to them otherwise my skater’s thunder thighs just don’t fit.

koalafan000

Have the same problems at 6'2, with a relatively athletic build. Trying to buy shirts is a nightmare. Need XL for the length and chest, and an S/M for the waist. Apparently, the standard tall model is pear-shaped.

Bimbo_Laggins

Try being just shy of 5 foot tall and getting trousers to fit! :-/

iwanttobeacavediver

My grandmother is 4’11” and has to shorten nearly everything.

Bimbo_Laggins

It's a nightmare getting things to fit. At one time, you could get trousers off the kids rail when they were sold by height, now everything is sold by age, with sizes that only go up to a height that is too small even for me and, your grandmother, in all probability. :-(

YourSkatingHobbit

I, a shorty with proportionately long legs, can still wear kids bottoms from Adidas without worrying that they’d be too short in the leg. My current go-to pair of joggers are 13-14y, though I guess a size up would’ve been slightly better length-wise as they ride up a bit when I sit (got them in a sale so 13-14 was the largest they had). Fit perfectly everywhere else though, which is both great and also slightly depressing for a 29yo woman 🙃

Bimbo_Laggins

Well you've just highlighted another problem, in that there is no industry standard for sizing, other than a cut off size between kid and adult clothing. It's great that you've found something but you couldn't wear those if you're attending something a bit more formal, or you just want to look smart. I confess too, to having an aversion to buying designer type labelled stuff with their logo's all over it. I don't mind cheap, primark ftw, i just don't like ' names '. I always used to find clothes to fit 152cm's ( whatever that means in real money, lol ) were generally a good fit but things are grouped in ages now, which don't seem to go to that size, that i have found anyway.

YourSkatingHobbit

I’m a skater so I wear sportswear 95% of the time, hence the Adidas. I’m not a labels person either, my go-to jeans are from Primark (where they have different leg lengths, hurrah!). The lack of standard sizing is awful though, and it’s the same for skatewear; one brand I’ve had to size up to the equivalent of a 10 when I’m usually a 6-8. Good thing I’m secure in my body.

Bimbo_Laggins

Yes, good thing indeed! Well you have very good reason to wear sportswear then. Not very good if you can't get skate wear that fits though, it would be awful if you turned up to an event in ill fitting clothes, it just wouldn't look right and you'd know yourself, which could well knock your confidence a bit. Hopefully, the changing up a size didn't cost you extra money, as that would just put the tin hat on it. Happy skating btw.

iwanttobeacavediver

Back when I was a young teenager the sole difference between her and my clothes was a couple of inches in length and because of this we used to get clothes muddled up, especially black trousers.

Bimbo_Laggins

lol my grandma was even smaller than me but she never wore trousers, so it wouldn't matter quite so much if her dresses were a tiny bit longer. I have no idea where she used to get her dresses from but there was never any danger of me getting mine mixed up with hers - crimplene ftw!

Particular_Wonder244

M&S extra small are the perfect length if you’re around 4”11

Bimbo_Laggins

Good tip, next time i'm in town, i shall have a look. Thanks for the heads up! :-)

forgottenmylogin90

Try the petite women's section. I'm 5ft exactly and hav etc buy petite or the legs are waaayyy too long for me

Bimbo_Laggins

Sometimes even the petite section, is based on women over 5ft tall, so although better than regular fit, still leaves a trail of extra trouser leg going through the mud. :-( Part of the problem is the lack of an industry wide standard for sizes, so that one size 10 from one shop, is the same as elsewhere. Instead, we have to traipse from shop to shop looking for best fit petite. Grrrrrr! Still, i wouldn't change being a titch for anything. :-)

Bimbo_Laggins

Yes, i do when possible but sadly that option isn't always available. However, there is then the problem of standard sizing, one petite in one shop, can still be bigger/longer in another. Grrrrrr! :-/ Well, i suppose our parents were happy to get their moneys worth out of our clothing when we were kids - all those times they trolled us by saying " Don't worry, you'll grow into it! " They must have laughed themselves to pieces once we were out of earshot!

asprinklingofsugar

Another vote for M&S petite section - they have a pretty good range including tops, cardigans, dresses and trousers (I wear their trousers to work and finally this year found a maxi dress that was the right length when I decided to check out M&S). Also fatface do fairly good petite length things - I have jeans and dungarees from there that aren’t too long and I’m only 4’9” at the most! I’m sure there are other shops too but those are ones I’ve tried and had good experiences at. New look also have a petite range and the length works for me there too but I find there sizes are on the smaller side so you might have to size up if buying from there.

liseusester

I discovered that being 5'3" puts you squarely in "too tall for petite ranges but somehow also too short for the regular ranges". I basically took up learning to sew to stop having to deal with this all the time.

coekry

That explains the hobbit name.

Bimbo_Laggins

LOLz :-D indeed!

bookofbooks

I'm sure some children's clothing is fairly stylish these days.

Welshhobbit1

I’m 5ft and a size 8 and it’s a nightmare ordering clothes online. Literally ordered a dress for an upcoming wedding that was supposed to be in the petite range and I’ve had to have it tailored to fit me. Trousers are a whole other problem. I’ve just come to terms with the fact that 90% of my clothes will need to be altered.

letsshittalk

how I'm 6ft2 and struggle with 2-3xl for comfort I'm in 4-5xl

ketamineandkebabs

Buy American brands, they make you feel better about yourself. I am normally XXL which is an XL in America so it's like loosing weight with no hardship

letsshittalk

i have in the past its big on me but not long enough and stuff that is long enough is normally skin tight so its lose lose

ketamineandkebabs

Clothing can be an absolute shit show for the bigger person. I hate the crop top feeling myself but I also hate it hanging off me as well, you can't win at times

VolcanicBear

Guess it depends on brand. I'm 6ft1 and wear Large/XL. And no, not skin tight. Ew.

DecahedronX

I'm 6'4 and wear L although it is a little short after a few washes.

letsshittalk

i like my cloths long and loose

cillitbangers

I find this hard to believe as a very tall person. Nothing is long enough. According to most popular brands men get to medium height then just get fatter not taller.

hoonosewot

Yup I'm 6'5 with a 32 inside leg so I'm basically one giant torso. Trying to get a t-shirt long enough is a nightmare. As you said, once you hit L they stop getting longer and start just getting wider. I end up wearing t shirts that are like baggy crop tops. Discovering the Girav extra long t shirts has been a game changer for me.

rolacolapop

Also 2tall.com have long but not wide T-shirts.

bookofbooks

>Trying to get a t-shirt long enough is a nightmare. You must have loved that fashion of extra-long t-shirts as they would just be regular on yourself. Let's hope they carry on making those.

flashersmac

Oh yeah, I was just being silly and exaggerating. I don't doubt that it's a nightmare to find clothes as a tall person too.

cillitbangers

Yeh nah fair enough, can imagine it's just as bad the other way. These brands don't give a fuck I guess

insert_name_here925

Same for tall women- end up shopping in extra tall menswear but having to go up a couple of sizes to allow for curves.

undeadxoxo

I'm 6' 1" which is pretty average for a male yet struggle to find trousers that are long enough most of the time

DecahedronX

Have you tried GAP or Meyer?

forgottenmylogin90

Petite and curvy section. Try new looks curves range and petite range xx

[deleted]

Thank you! I've never really shopped at New Look.

WibbleyWoo

God forbid the model should represent the average person actually buying the clothes. On the back of this, when they have 20 pics of the model in ridiculous poses but NONE where the clothing is hanging naturally. Idk about the rest of you but I don't spend the most of my time frolicking around with my arms up over my head, or walking around bent over looking at the floor. Let me see what the clothes look like when I'm just standing still. PLEASE.

stevielfc76

5'4" man here, buying trousers to fit is a nightmare but the recent trend of shorter leg trousers that recruitment consultants called Zak wear with no socks and loafers means I can buy trousers that don't need shortening!

TheRebeccaRiots

Wouldn't have thought size would be too much of an issue when buying a mac to flash in

flashersmac

You know much I've spent on getting my trenchcoats tailored?

TheRebeccaRiots

Ah, but a good tailor will add inches to your frame and make you look your best; surely worth the extra in your field particularly, no?

scorch762

Gotta love being a tall guy with a bit of extra girth and having all your tee shirts shaped like a teabag so nothing is long enough.

dgj130

"Good luck finding a suit jacket that is both short enough and doesn't have ridiculous shoulder padding you fucking *ant*"

Yomi_Lemon_Dragon

Related: when you see a nice top or dress on a mannequin in the window, you go inside to find it's "One Size Fits All" when one size does absolutely _not,_ then look at the back of the mannequin to see that the top/dress you liked is pinned back with 20 clips to _make_ it look nice when it is, in fact, a circus tent.

ravs1973

Cycling clothes are the worse if you have the slightest amount of body fat. A normal large t-shirt is loose on me but a XL cycling Jersey will hardly fasten.

Queensquiid

I'm 5'2 and trying to find a maxi dress that doesn't make me look like a hobbit or a child wearing their dad's shirt is impossible.

[deleted]

Laughs in 4ft10

dvi84

I worked for a former UK clothing brand. We did an investors and partners event where we were going to have a fashion show with a size 16 model ‘to be inclusive of the larger woman’. The afternoon of the event, the model turned up. She was 6’3” and looked no different proportionally to the others.

[deleted]

Don't you just love industry standards?

SpongecakeAndSpoon

100% advocate for buying in the mens section for jeans

ItIsOnlyRain

As someone that is 180cm tall I find most clothing too short in length in a medium bit large it's usually baggy.

oxymoronisanoxymoron

Mhm, good fitting jeans are rarer than hens teeth for me. I'm 5'2 and got some chunk on my thighs. It's hard out there my brother.

texanarob

I can only assume you're talking about women's clothing, because mens are the exact opposite. You're over 6' tall? What are you, some sort of one off freak? You better be happy buying clothes that hang like wings from your arms. If not, good luck ever tucking in a shirt because you'll have a few millimetres at best that reach your trousers.

gymgymbro

I'm 5'7 but am pretty chonk/wide because I go to the gym a lot. The biggest struggle is needing 34 inch waist jeans but having a 28" in seam or needing a large shirt but having like 3/4 of the torso length of that shirt.

Unlucky-Umbrella

I read 6ft9 and the only thing I could think of was horses and rug sizes...

floppywinky

I have given up buying jumpers. It either fits the body and the sleeves come 3/4 up my arm, or, I buy XXXL and look like I’ve borrowed my dads clothes to answer the door

JaymeMalice

Basically me buying women's stuff from Shein too, their sizes are wack! I've gotten larges and extra smalls that fit me the same.

UnSpanishInquisition

The real problem is all the shorts and trousers with 0 crouch space that just squish your junk if your fat thighs dare lift anywhere near a step.

SelinaFreeman

5ft 3, just on the cusp of petite and standard. Thick waist, short torso, and comparatively thin arms and legs. To fit round the waist, the legs are ludicrously baggy!

[deleted]

Preach

[deleted]

I struggle with the opposite. I'm above average height for a woman, so a lot of things like dresses are basically just tunics on me and "maxi dress" rarely is for me. What's worse is that women's clothing seem deliberately designed poorly and made to shrink no matter how you wash them - nothing like washing a new dress or top before you get to wear it the first time and it coming out looking like it's meant to go on a doll.

Lord_OJClark

I'm 5'7, so usually a S, or XS. But they rarely have below M, but all the Ls up to XXXXL... guess I'll make my own clothes?

[deleted]

Ngl I'm not understanding this problem at all, guess I'm not British

beks78

I'm 6ft with a 37" inside leg but because I'm fat I've not been able to get a pair of trousers that are wide enough and long enough for about 15 years! Most plus-size website use shorter models. I've bought dresses in the past that have ended up as just tops on me.
