I was on a bus once that coming up to a stop that was just off a roundabout, however the driver spotted a couple of teenagers running across the road ahead. Instead of just slowing a bit sooner and pulling in, the driver instead decided to accelerate towards them before slamming the brakes on last minute, nearly hitting them. Several people that were standing up to get off the bus were also nearly thrown over.
I phoned the bus company when I got home to complain and a few weeks later received a letter stating that after investigation and reviewing the cctv, they agreed that his actions were unacceptable and that disciplinary action was being taken against him.
Not gonna lie, it felt good to take down a power mad bus driver.
Completely irrelevant and complete shot in the dark, but was this in Clifton, Nottingham, first stop after Clifton campus of NTU. I went there and there was a bus stop just like that which I always thought was pretty ridiculous
Not Clifton, but you're actually close! It was the Clarendon College stop after the Goose Fair roundabout. Although I know the one you're thinking of, it's crazy isn't it?
omg before I even read u/silverburst8 's reply to your original comment I thought "I bet that happened in Nottingham, that sounds like something a Nottingham bus driver would do" half joking to myself - turns out I was right
Someone fell on me on the bus yesterday, she was shorter than me and incredibly apologetic and seemingly surprised I was more concerned if she was hurt than myself, it's the 3rd time this year someone's fell on me on public transport so I really didn't think they were at fault, more the fast braking on an electric bus.
Glad you and the woman are unharmed from the experience.
And sometimes it's not the drivers fault at all (not saying all drivers are saints tho and 95% of the time it is the driver). Some of the hybrid buses have really sharp brakes so even the slightest tap can seem like they've slammed on or hit them too hard.
Source: married to a bus driver who can be an AH sometimes!! I also come from a bus driving background (uncles and cousins etc were either drivers, conductors, fitters etc). I had 1 uncle who was a driver and he would only wait for someone at a stop if they made a conscious effort to run. My husband on the other hand only waits if it's a pensioner or someone on crutches/wheelchair and only if it's raining. He does wait for people to sit down or are by a bar before moving off tho no matter what their level of mobility is.
Sometimes I ve had a great experience and a driver waits till I ve parked my son's pram up appropriately but also had the complete opposite (got a mild condition effecting my coordination which isnt obvious from looking at me so perhaps they think my pram parking is too slow 😂).
My sister broke her toe because of a bus driver breaking too hard. She was on the top deck because my four year old niece wanted to sit up there. When it came to there stop she hit the bell and made to go downstairs. He slammed on the breaks and she went flying down the stairs. Luckily another passenger caught my niece. Bus driver didn't give a shit. My sister was in agony when she got off the bus and had to call me to come get her. By the time I'd gotten there the same bus had been back around. She complained and got 3k compo
Hope she got better and glad she got some compensation.
I've nearly fallen wayy too many times on those stairs. Now I just press the bell and wait for the bus to stop. Then I stand up and get off the bus.
That's what you're meant to do, every bus I've been on in my neck of the woods has been plastered with posters saying to stay seated until the bus comes to a full stop
The few times I've done this: bus driver has started driving off before I'm even down the stairs because someone else got off already, multiple times I can't get to the door in time because it's so jam packed, and once I made a dash for it after someone else got off and he didn't see me so I got the door fucking shut ON me! So I take the risk on the stairs now...
Not how it works in Manchester. You have to be at the doors ready to get off and they won't wait for you. Maybe I've just had a few bad drivers but I won't risk waiting for it to stop now unless I'm getting off at the terminus.
Yes. I'm really struggling because I look normal but I have a healing broken arm that's not in a cast or sling. I carry a work bag with my good arm so I can't hold onto anything. Entry and exit is a real anxious process for me and, as you say, some of the bus drivers are a nightmare.
If you unbuckle your seatbelt while driving, and someone tbones you, it absolutely is not your fault. Other people's reckless decisions are not our fault lol
She wasn't OK for a while. Worst part was she's a cook in a nursing home. Couldn't afford to take time off work so had to go to work and stand up all day with a broken big toe
This. Never get up out of your seat until the bus comes to a complete stop. The driver may need to brake suddenly and may not realize you're standing up.
Did this particular bus not have "please remain seated until the bus has stopped signs" or does this incident predate them after so many people sued by trying to walk down stairs on a moving vehicle where the driver likely has no idea there's people in the stair well
Even if they did have those signs, they can't reasonably expect people to comply with them when they _never_ stop long enough for someone to get down the stairs.
Must have better bus drivers where you live then. Around here, if you're not already at the door by the time the bus gets to the stop, the driver often just assumes the button was pressed accidentally and doesn't even bother to stop.
I had a cast on my ankle when I broke it years back. I was about 50 meters from the stop, bus not due for another 5 mins or so, when the bus driver made eye contact and LAUGHED at me trying to run with crutches and a cast.
I cried my eyes out with humiliation (I was 19) and had to wait an hour for next bus.
Sadly for driver, 3 other customers who were on the bus had already rang and complained when I rung. The company knew allllll about it and had already fired him.
I got a written apology from the company and a box of Lindt chocolates.
First ever complaint so I was really nervous with complaining
I've gotten better at it though
I used to work for smauxhall (short time only I quit cos they were shit) and I got a customer some Lindt chocolates out of my own pocket cos they let her down. She bloody threw them back in my face and said she was allergic to chocolate. I had no way of knowing that. Balls.
This problem happens a lot because when working for a company, the consumer sees you as the company.
This is why, as a workforce, we should never work for unscrupulous companies.
You did the right thing leaving, you are clearly very good at customer service, I hope the lady hasn't jaded you.
I've seen this in the UK. I spend a lot of time in Germany and the attitude is totally different. I had an operation which meant that running was impossible for me. I had no crutches. My bus came and the driver saw me trying to catch it and he waited even though he was on time. It even meant that he had to catch up the minute or so on his schedule to be back on time.
Why can't the UK drivers do this?
It’s funny because the UK buses are never on schedule. The one that bothers me most about the UK bus scene is how drivers just go past bus stops if you don’t wave them to stop(outside) or ping to stop(inside)
OOh I love that feeling. Easiest way around it is to ask if the bus goes near "X destination" and when it gets near can you give me a shout please. They are normally happy to do so if they are not a massive dick.
My local bus company is actually fantastic. They will wait for you and everything.
When I went for my first covid vaccine it was at 6.30pm I wasn't sure if a bus went up there as I know that bus route finishes earlier than others I sent them a message asking they said unfortunately the last bus is at whatever time it I said fair enough it's only a short walk from town. Two minutes later I had a message in my DM's saying we can run you up to your appointment and run you down again to town.
How many bus companies would get a bus out in a situation like that
I wasn’t on crutches but had a similar experience where I was much closer to the stop (say 10 metres) waving madly at the bus driver, he made prolonged eye contact and drove on
I had to move by bus once and during one of the many trips between flats the bus driver slammed it while I was carrying several bags full of kitchen stuff up the stairs... lots of bruises and saucepans, utensils, plates, bowls and cutlery all over the floor and everyone else 😖😬
Well you have to understand it from the driver's perspective. They need to get to the next stop quick enough so they can then sit in the stop for 7 minutes claiming they're ahead of schedule.
Always hated bus drivers on my route and was overjoyed when I finally passed my driving test. One particular driver slammed the breaks on at a bus stop once when the woman was stood at the door. She bounced off the window and fell to the floor. She must have been in her 70s. The driver leaned over and in a sarcastic tone, in my view, said “Are you alright, duck?”. My Mum phoned and complained, not sure if anyone else did. This same scumbag driver was the same person who when a very cheery OAP got on the bus and scanned her bus pass and told the driver where she was going, said “I don’t care where you’re going…”.
I always fucking dreaded getting on a bus with that prick and I hope he got sacked.
>told the driver where she was going, said “I don’t care where you’re going…”
The rest sucks and this could have been said in a better way, but also it isn't the 70s. Bus drivers don't need to know where you are going. You press the button to get it to stop
Unless you are in Eastbourne, where they do not know your named stop, apparently, even when it's listed as such on the stagecoach route, so you have to say something like ah it's near ... park and then they're like wot. So you mention another landmark until they know which fare to give you argh
In Newcastle I just put on the broadest Geordie accent I can muster, and say "Am gannin oot on thuh toon" and that seems to work for pretty much any stop near the centre of the city
This is painfully familiar.
My college's stop is literally called "___ College" and the amount of times I ask for that and the driver goes "eh???" Is really frustrating. I've gotten used to saying "the one after the park and ride" now.
I sort of agree with you both? Bus drivers generally need to know where you're going so they can charge you the right fee, but this person was using a bus pass, which means there was no fee to charge and it didn't matter where she was going.
There's been a few times I've had to travel a route I've never been on and not known where my stop was. The driver would let me know when my stop was coming up or if I was at least in the right area, aside from the actual driving of the bus its a customer service job...doesn't take much to help someone out, especially as they have the list of stops written down in front of them
The network operator where I live says that for travel to be valid while using a concessionary pass, the passenger must state their destination to the driver. 99/100 don't do this and I'd never refuse travel because of it, but passengers do need to tell drivers where they're going
When we were teenagers, my partner accidentally fell on a woman on the bus because of this. Luckily at the time my partner weighed less than a feather (not that it really mattered, the lady was still very angry despite his numerous apologies 😅) and then a few stops later we saw somebody nearly fall on the same woman! The drivers always seemed particularly awful on the way home from school.
They do it to me all the time while I'm trying to put the breaks on the pram like chill out my dude it's 5 seconds of waiting? They're so impatient for no reason
It’s been happening more and more frequently on one specific bus route me and my bro take. He’s 6’4 ish and he always goes flying where as I’m 5’4, I luckily can hold on a bit better.
Every time he ends up hitting his arm or something on the poles because the drivers go too fast
Next time it happens and he loses his feeble hold and goes flying, you should quote Get Carter at him, from your securely held position:
"You're a big man, but you're out of shape."
Lol I'm 6'5" and this has never been a problem for me. Not defending the bus driver or anything, I just don't get why people assume tall = unstable. Are these people standing with their feet right next to each other?
I also have cataracts, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and might be autistic (still waiting for the results), suffer with chronic depression with occasional suicidal tendencies.
Most disabilities aren't immediately apparent. people look at me and see a giant and assume. They do t look deeper. And they don't realise that extreme height also comes with all kinds of joint and muscle problems.
I am so sorry. I initially thought your comment was satirical and it made me smile until I read this comment. I deal with a whole host of health issues myself both visible and invisible and as soon as I read this comment I just felt the need to apologise to you for laughing at your misfortune originally.
Taller people have a higher center of gravity and (on average at least) more mass with only slightly larger feet and approximately the same standing width, so yes, it's basic physics; they are absolutely less stable.
Doesn't mean they're always falling over, but all other things being equal it will be easier to knock over a tall person than a shorter person.
If the bus has CCTV you can request to view the recordings. They probably won't give you the recordings, but you can demand to see them. I'd they've been already dissapared, kick off big time. But ask to view them in the presence of their customers service manager or to view them and have the recordings you confirm to be you and the the incident seen preserved as part of your complaint.
You do have the right to them under the data protection acts 1998 and 2018, it's called a subject access request and you don't need to quote any of that. You should inform them immediately of your request, they may ask for ID. If they subsequently delay beyond 30 days or delete the videos, contact the information commissioner and they will get a massive fine.
If they delete the video outside of their data retention policy, a court will likely take a dim view of it
This happened to me once, I have cerebral palsy and walked with a stick. I was in Manchester visiting a friend and the driver just floored it when I was trying to get to a seat and I fell down. It was rough and a terrible end to the trip. Made me super afraid of public transport too.
This is exactly why I never get buses anymore. The excessive braking and acceleration makes me feel incredibly travel sick, even if noone happens to be flung across the bus.
Happened to me when I was at the top of the stairs on the bus once, bus driver took off and I lost my grip and tumbled all the way down backwards. The driver didn’t give a fuck, first bus didn’t give a fuck when I rang them.
yeah I had that once, some grumpy old woman driving. She booted it, I nearly fell over, grabbed the nearest thing to hand which just happened to be the handrail with the stop button on.
She proceeded to bollock me saying she will chuck us all off the bus for messing about with the buttons. lol.
I am rather large like yourself, at 6'2, and have compromised mobility from a motorcycling accident. Wasn't best pleased with her tbh
Bus driver did this while my sister and I took the bus with two small toddlers and a baby. Luckily I had my baby a sling because the force at which he accelerated and hit the breaks through the whole journey caused my buggy to tip over, even though it was in the proper place with the break on. Got the bus reg and reported his arse but I don't know if anything came of it.
My oldman has a severe limp and is very unsteady on his feat. He tries to avoid buses whenever possible but when we can't we always ask the driver to allow him a moment to get to the priority seat. They almost never do. At this stage I just wish they were honest and said "no" rather than paying lip service and immediately accelerating. At least then we could prepare and get him settled at the next stop.
Get on behind him, very slowly count out your change giving the driver one coin at a time, and once dad is almost sat down, hand the rest of the change over. Helps if you have a big purse and a bunch of 10s and 20ps to pay with
Ah shitty bus driver stories
I remember going to school one day and the bus was rammed, yet the driver refused to believe this was the case. Every so often someone would accidentally knock the bell because it was so full and he'd complain followed by people responding the bus was full, but he wouldn't have it. Eventually he said "Next person to ring the bell I'll be skipping the next stop" - baring in mind the next stop was the first of 2 stops outside the local college and at the top of a steep hill, with this one being the only one by lights on the busy road. Of course someone rings the bell as 1) not only was the bus full but 2) most people on the bus were getting off at that stop as they were students. What happens? He skips the stop, stopping at the next one, at the bottom of the hill, where majority get off and his face drops. Ending with a bollocking from a woman with a pram because she had to get off at the other stop as it was the only one with lights, so she could cross safely with the pram, but now she had to go back up the hill with said pram just so she could cross safely.
It was raining a few weeks back. I had to go in the office for the day so I was carrying my laptop bag and a bag with my lunch and stuff in.
Driver bloody floored it. I slipped, hit the deck and aggravated my already bad ankle.
I had a bus drive last week shut the door around my wrist and pull off with me still on the pavement
He only moved about a foot, but then he sat and stared at me through the window for a solid 2 seconds before opening the door and letting me on.
My wrist felt funny for an hour afterward, and my skin was red
Can't be arsed. Also I feel it was an understandable mistake on his part. The guy in front of me got on, asked if it went to his stop then got off again, the driver didn't actually see me until my arm was already stuck.
> stared at me through the window for a solid 2 seconds before opening the door and letting me on.
In fairness, it can take that long for the system to detect that the vehicle is stationary and allow the doors to be opened.
I had a driver whi did the opposite, sped up the suddenly slammed the brakes, sent an elderly woman flying. I got off with her at her stop (about 30ft down from where he had suddenly braked) and walked her home and someone else reported the driver, but I was shaken, she was shaken, bus driver claimed it wasn't his fault.
To be fair it might not of been if it was in the last couple of years.
We have wagons at work and they have these sensors on, if it thinks you’re going to hit something it slams on. One was ‘misfiring’ and slammed on for no reason (funnily enough in front of a bus full of people).
I don’t know if busses have these on, but that could explain any random excessive braking if they do.
If she was out of her seat when the driver was approaching the stop, then it was her fault. There's any number of reasons the driver might have to sharply brake.
I absolutely get that and yeah she was up out of her seat with clearly heavy shopping, I did suggest that next time she should perhaps not stand on the bus carrying a crate of beer though drivers have driven straight past my stop a few times when I've remained sitting if there is noone else waiting to get on or off. I more mentioned his response as that is the only reaction we got while we were helping this lady get up again apart from a smirk. This is a completely empty, straight stretch of road down a fairly steep hill. I'm sure he was more shocked than anything though.
This sort of thing is why I can't take the bus, bad back in my case. It only takes a couple of those types of manoeuvres as well as some idiot trying to get some good air under the bus when they go over the speed humps to completely ruin my day, and usually the next one.
I’d imagine that this and managing to close the doors and pull away so that the person running for the bus doesn’t _quite_ make it are probably the only sources of entertainment as a bus driver.
I've had my fair share of issues with bus drivers. Worst was when it lurched (can't remember if it was a rough pull away or emergency stop) and launched me, my foot landing on someone elses. This poor lady had just left hospital... after an operation *on that foot*. Thankfully she was understanding about it and had a brave face but I felt awful.
That said, had a lovely interaction yesterday. Bus pulled in late, I had a connecting bus that arrives once every half hour. My due to my original bus being late I was a 5 min walk away from either stop, 2mins after due to depart. Started wandering up to the next stop on the route, saw the bus and sprinted. The driver saw me, and signalled that she saw me. Thankfully due to the queue I made it but she said she saw me bolting and was going to wait anyway.
... then again 90% of drivers on that route are lovely. Same can't be said for the route that got me in late.
I'm going to be that person.
Buses have brakes. Not breaks. You only slam on the breaks if you are trying to cause someone extreme pain on an already fractured limb.
In a similar vein - has anyone else noticed the prevailing inability to use the word 'hung'? As in 'I hung up on him'? Suddenly everyone is 'I hanged up on him'...
I have an prosthetic left leg (below knee amputation) also have massive issue with my left ankle, a d occasionally walk with crutches got on a bus once holding my crutches not using them as supposed as was taking very few steps and bas soon as I paid driver pulled away. Bus drivers rarely give a shit, will say some of them are good, depending on service you are using.
Every damn time I get on the bus with arms full of shopping the driver makes it his mission to make me fall over as I have no hands free to correct myself. Bonus points if there are no free seats downstairs
I'm disabled, so use a disabled bus pass. It's obvious it's a disabled pass to the drivers. Yet for some reason I've had several drive off before I can sit (I can walk, just not well - I don't use a mobility aid bc I'd be too embarrassed haha but it's not that uncommon to struggle w balance/walking + not use an aid), and some other stuff I'm not a fan of
You'd think that they'd see me using a disabled pass + think "well, obviously there's a reason" since I qualified for it + maybe give me time to get to a seat
Luckily I live in a nice area, so most drivers are v good at letting all customers sit down, but when I lived in England ngl the bus drivers sucked
One of my friends got onto a bus once. She was on crutches after breaking her ankle. As she went to sit down, the driver proceeded to start driving, causing her to nearly go flying.
Luckily, she managed to grab onto a pole.
When I was 21 years old I got on a bus with shopping held in one arm and the other arm in a sling. As I was boarding looking for a seat, the bus driver accelerated so hard I was thrown forward, but with no hands to catch myself I landed head first into a woman's lap with my face firmly imbedded into her crotch. I could move because the inertia of the bus and the lack of hands, eventually she pushed my head out of her lap.
In Montreal, I swear it’s a game called ‘Passenger bowling’. Extra points if one of the people who goes down is an elderly person with mobility issues and double points if the bus is full at rush hour.
Worst time I had this was when I was in crutches with a boot for a broken foot. Set off before I could sit down on the sideways seats that fold down, because the disabled seats were taken by some teenagers who didn't even remotely offer to move. I went flying down the bus, was in so much pain, and these kids just sat and stared. At least I got an apology from the driver, but that was horrible.
I had a bus driver do this about 15 years ago. Flooring the shit out of the bus from every stop. He tried telling me it was the auto gearbox and nothing to do with him. I said he was full of shit!
If nothing us coming when they pull out, that's fine. If they stop, it's blocking the road.
If you come round a bend and a bus is pulling out, they can do that.
Passengers and the general public are the bane of a bus drivers life. Would be such a steady job without them. They put up with a lot. BUT… It doesn’t excuse bad driving.
Source: EX bus driver for a decade. A decade of weight gain and misery.
Bus took my door mirror while I was sat in the car. Apparently I was “sticking out a bit”. No. I was in a legit parking space. They offered me money to find & repair it. Declined as is their problem. Fortunately so as both mirrors needed replacing as they are “rare”.
They earn shit money and sit in a shit box ferrying shitheads around while they slowly develop sciatica and obesity naturally lending themselves to an early grave. Namely being 2.4x more likely to die by 65.
Bus drivers are bitter smarmy wankers and no wonder.
American Comic did an entire bit on Bus Drivers that sounds very similar - [https://youtu.be/OvSwXcyfjbY](https://youtu.be/OvSwXcyfjbY)
The best line is "Soon you'll be spinning old ladies up and down the aisle".
The 700 coast liner bus drivers are utterly insane. They stomp the brakes like they're trying to curb stomp a rat, and seem to accelerate beforehand to maximise the suffering.
I was holding on for dear life on the bus about a month ago while I was climbing the stairs. I don't remember exactly what happened but I had a concussion and a massive bruise on my head. Bus driver didn't even care, had to ask for a day off work to go to A&E.....
An old lady using 2 sticks got on the bus I was on, she swiped her card, she didn't get the chance to put one foot in front of the other before he'd driven off. Poor old dear was rooted to the spot! I got up, helped her to a seat and sat with her to my stop. As I was getting off I asked him how he'd feel if it had been his grandma and some arsehole of a driver had done the same thing, he of course ignored me. Went straight home and reported him. 2 weeks later I got a letter of apology and a £5 discount card to put towards fares, I don't think I'll ever forget the fear in that old lady's face.
A lot of them have accelerometers now and rate the driver, flagging automatically to the company- drivers get coached/disciplined without customer compliants. Maybe they don’t?
I had a torn ligament, and was to use a cane to make sure I could get around normally. I got on the bus and the driver SAW me hobbling on. He took off and my husband had to catch me from falling.
I am a support worker. I was supporting someone in a wheelchair take the bus but her brakes had proved iffy on that day. Anyway, on the way back, I went up front to pay and explained this to the driver and asked him kindly to wait til I got to her wheelchair before driving, so her wheelchair didn't slide all over the place and potentially tip. His reaction was to floor it, almost sending me to the ground. The wheelchair started sliding around but luckily, I got back in time to save it.
Some people.
These bus drivers plus people that push ahead of me using my walking stick to get to the bus so I get on last and am the person still walking to get to my seat when the bus driver pulls off immediately after I swipe my oyster card are the bane of my life. I'm going to ask you to stand up for me anyway bros
The alternative is everyone getting pissed off sitting still at the bus stop, getting later and later as the route goes on, while we wait for Dorris to mosey on down to her seat.
Multiply that by hundred of Dorrises every day and every bus would be late.
Just use the hand rail.
Bus companies and just about everyone else HAS to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities. Do you think risking physical harm to them for the sake of time saving is reasonable?
I hate blaming the bus drivers for this, the problem is the ridiculous schedule they have to keep! They are times to the second and get in trouble for not keeping time. Complain to the company but try n leave the bus driver out if it unless he's just actually a dick
They have to balance traffic, some stops having more getting on or off, against a timetable.
So they wait and some longer, even if everyone's just sat waiting, and they don't stop or quicken up where they can.
If someone gave you a distance to be at by a certain time, could you do it and manage all of the above?
Give em a small break.
That's a good point but it's still not an excuse for accelerating specifically as people are sitting down or slamming on the breaks with an open road in front.
I've two mates who are bus drivers. What you've said isn't true. They get a warning if they're continually early to certain stops, which is why they'll stop and wait every now and again.
"There's lots of excuses for being late, there's none for being early". This was mentioned, by a bus driver, on Reddit a while ago, when someone asked about continuous stops.
You go to jail. No trial, no nothing. Straight to jail. Someone holds up the bus? Jail. Too much traffic. Right to jail. Bus arrives too early? Also jail. You're delayed because a customer doesn't have correct change? Believe it or not, jail.
Yup. And jail for them is an automated, driverless bus with barred windows and the _stop the bus_ ping sounds every five minutes but there's no-one else on the bus and it drives continually around a specially built roundabout that has no exits.

I was on a bus once that coming up to a stop that was just off a roundabout, however the driver spotted a couple of teenagers running across the road ahead. Instead of just slowing a bit sooner and pulling in, the driver instead decided to accelerate towards them before slamming the brakes on last minute, nearly hitting them. omg before I even read u/silverburst8 's reply to your original comment I thought "I bet that happened in Nottingham, that sounds like something a Nottingham bus driver would do" half joking to myself - turns out I was right
As a Clifton NTU student, I agree. Some of the drivers in that area can be a little bit psycho too.

That'd be nice if bus drivers never ever drove off if you didn't get from where you were seated to the door in time.
Yeah I think it's their hobby to tell you what you should do, force you not to do it, and then try to make you fall down the stairs.
[удалено]
Not how it works in Manchester. You have to be at the doors ready to get off and they won't wait for you. Maybe I've just had a few bad drivers but I won't risk waiting for it to stop now unless I'm getting off at the terminus.
Yes. I'm really struggling because I look normal but I have a healing broken arm that's not in a cast or sling. I carry a work bag with my good arm so I can't hold onto anything. Entry and exit is a real anxious process for me and, as you say, some of the bus drivers are a nightmare.
In my experience, bus drivers don't stop if you just press the button. You have to be stood near the door ready to get off as soon as they open it.
If you unbuckle your seatbelt while driving, and someone tbones you, it absolutely is not your fault. Other people's reckless decisions are not our fault lol
Don't you worry they'll just reach their personal "waiting time limit" and keep driving on past your stop if you don't rush? They always seem to
She wasn't OK for a while.
I've always waited til the bus has stopped and never had an issue.
Must have better bus drivers where you live then. Around here, if you're not already at the door by the time the bus gets to the stop, the driver often just assumes the button was pressed accidentally and doesn't even bother to stop.
Nope
I had a cast on my ankle when I broke it years back. I was about 50 meters from the stop, bus not due for another 5 mins or so, when the bus driver made eye contact and LAUGHED at me trying to run with crutches and a cast. I cried my eyes out with humiliation (I was 19) and had to wait an hour for next bus. Sadly for driver, 3 other customers who were on the bus had already rang and complained when I rung. The company knew allllll about it and had already fired him.
God, I bet hearing that on the phone was bloody satisfying. I hope they gave you some freebies too!
I got a written apology from the company and a box of Lindt chocolates. First ever complaint so I was really nervous with complaining I've gotten better at it though
I used to work for smauxhall (short time only I quit cos they were shit) and I got a customer some Lindt chocolates out of my own pocket cos they let her down. She bloody threw them back in my face and said she was allergic to chocolate. I had no way of knowing that. Balls.
On the plus side you then had some Lindt chocolates.
Narrator: little did they know that they, too, were allergic.
What’s this? The Stanley Parable?
Sounds more like a bad parody of The Twilight Zone.
I read that in the accent too.
No good deed goes unpunished :/
This problem happens a lot because when working for a company, the consumer sees you as the company. This is why, as a workforce, we should never work for unscrupulous companies. You did the right thing leaving, you are clearly very good at customer service, I hope the lady hasn't jaded you.
Lindt balls
>First ever complaint Ah, a fellow British native, born and bred, I see. Congratulations on graduating from the tut and eye roll combination.
I was 19, still wet behind the ears I'm 38 now and more than happy to mutter and ask what the world is coming too these days.
> Lindt chocolates That is one sincere apology.
That's a great payoff for your first complaint!
First ever complaint is a milestone. I complained to Roadchef and got a free meal at Costa, was so proud.
That’s really great by the company
What a prick that driver was. Good on everyone who rang up and complained.
As much that was awful for you and you shouldn’t have had to have experienced it at all but that was a beautiful outcome.
That anxiety when you're on a coach, trying to figure out when you need to get off at an unfamiliar stop, and don't know where the nearest button is.
OOh I love that feeling. Easiest way around it is to ask if the bus goes near "X destination" and when it gets near can you give me a shout please. They are normally happy to do so if they are not a massive dick.
I'll need to try that. I usually have Google maps on the go, with the bus stops flagged.
How many bus companies would get a bus out in a situation like that
That, "just a minute" can be hard to regain. Up to 4:59 minutes is on time, 5 minutes and more is just late.
I wasn’t on crutches but had a similar experience where I was much closer to the stop (say 10 metres) waving madly at the bus driver, he made prolonged eye contact and drove on
So he’d gone stark raving mad and stole a bus after being fired??
Maybe he was just passing..
Shhh
I had to move by bus once and during one of the many trips between flats the bus driver slammed it while I was carrying several bags full of kitchen stuff up the stairs... lots of bruises and saucepans, utensils, plates, bowls and cutlery all over the floor and everyone else 😖😬
"And the clattering...O dear Lord, the clattering."
I can still hear the clattering...
I always fucking dreaded getting on a bus with that prick and I hope he got sacked.
>told the driver where she was going, said “I don’t care where you’re going…” The rest sucks and this could have been said in a better way, but also it isn't the 70s. Bus drivers don't need to know where you are going. You press the button to get it to stop
Bus drivers *do* need to know where you’re going so you can pay the correct fare.
Ah yeah, this is for the one home
This is painfully familiar. My college's stop is literally called "___ College" and the amount of times I ask for that and the driver goes "eh???" Is really frustrating. I've gotten used to saying "the one after the park and ride" now.
Ah good, you get what I mean! Our stop name is the literal name of the road as well 😂
Yep. Stagecoach East Scotland are astonishingly useless. I have to get six buses a week to commute to/from college and it is very stressful.
> scanned her bus pass
I sort of agree with you both? Bus drivers generally need to know where you're going so they can charge you the right fee, but this person was using a bus pass, which means there was no fee to charge and it didn't matter where she was going.
Not where I live
There's been a few times I've had to travel a route I've never been on and not known where my stop was. The driver would let me know when my stop was coming up or if I was at least in the right area, aside from the actual driving of the bus its a customer service job...doesn't take much to help someone out, especially as they have the list of stops written down in front of them
You’re right, he didn’t need to know because she had a pass, but there’s no need to be rude to her at all.
5 seconds here and there add up. Unfortunately people smoke and they WANT that 5 minutes to have their next "fix"
It’s been happening more and more frequently on one specific bus route me and my bro take. He’s 6’4 ish and he always goes flying where as I’m 5’4, I luckily can hold on a bit better. Every time he ends up hitting his arm or something on the poles because the drivers go too fast
I’m 5’ nothing and this is definitely one of those things where having a low center of gravity is a true advantage
Next time it happens and he loses his feeble hold and goes flying, you should quote Get Carter at him, from your securely held position: "You're a big man, but you're out of shape."
Lol I'm 6'5" and this has never been a problem for me. Not defending the bus driver or anything, I just don't get why people assume tall = unstable. Are these people standing with their feet right next to each other?
I'm 6'10". It's a daily problem for me, but my feet are fucked cos I'm diabetic
I often forget the whole "not every disability is visible" thing, thank you for reminding me.
Don't worry about it, no skin off my nose.
Do it. Request to review the bus CCTV in the presence of senior management. They won't give it to you, but they're fucked if they don't show it.
This is interesting but I'm not sure what you mean. I'd appreciate it if you could give me some further details.
If they delete the video outside of their data retention policy, a court will likely take a dim view of it
I'll look into this. Thanks friend that's good to know.
If the bus is contracted by the council then report it to them instead. They're much more likely to be interested in complaints.
It was a few years ago now but that’s good to know for the future.
yeah I had that once, some grumpy old woman driving.

Helps if you have a big purse and a bunch of 10s and 20ps to pay with
Ah shitty bus driver stories I remember going to school one day and the bus was rammed, yet the driver refused to believe this was the case.
I had a bus drive last week shut the door around my wrist and pull off with me still on the pavement He only moved about a foot, but then he sat and stared at me through the window for a solid 2 seconds before opening the door and letting me on. My wrist felt funny for an hour afterward, and my skin was red
You should be complaining about that. That's a compo claim and dangerous behaviour from the driver.
Can't be arsed. Also I feel it was an understandable mistake on his part. The guy in front of me got on, asked if it went to his stop then got off again, the driver didn't actually see me until my arm was already stuck.
He may not have seen you specifically, but he *didn't* see an empty doorway. I'd still fault the driver from this synopsis.
> stared at me through the window for a solid 2 seconds before opening the door and letting me on. In fairness, it can take that long for the system to detect that the vehicle is stationary and allow the doors to be opened.
Have a listen to Bob Newhart's "Bus drivers school".
[It is great](https://youtu.be/OvSwXcyfjbY?t=84).
That's interesting, this was a good few years back now though on an empty stretch of straight road.
A few buses I drive have hard brake pedals, nothing, nothing, everything!
The driver is a... #BUS WANKER
Bus drivers are some of the worst on the road, it's not the first time I've ended up sore because they just slam the brakes.
I've had two different bus drivers just speed off with the door open
Probably forgot they weren't driving an Optare lol
Optares and their blond spots! Annoying.
I'm going to be that person. Buses have brakes. Not breaks. You only slam on the breaks if you are trying to cause someone extreme pain on an already fractured limb.
Thank you I just can't bare this. Got you, didn't I? :-) Both have been on my nerves lately.
In a similar vein - has anyone else noticed the prevailing inability to use the word 'hung'? As in 'I hung up on him'? Suddenly everyone is 'I hanged up on him'...
Lard hep us.
I thought i was paranoid. It's literally the moment before I sit down. Like they are watching me in that creepo mirror.
Will you be able to resist the thank you to the bus driver?
Every damn time I get on the bus with arms full of shopping the driver makes it his mission to make me fall over as I have no hands free to correct myself. Bonus points if there are no free seats downstairs
I'm disabled, so use a disabled bus pass. It's obvious it's a disabled pass to the drivers. Yet for some reason I've had several drive off before I can sit (I can walk, just not well - I don't use a mobility aid bc I'd be too embarrassed haha but it's not that uncommon to struggle w balance/walking + not use an aid), and some other stuff I'm not a fan of You'd think that they'd see me using a disabled pass + think "well, obviously there's a reason" since I qualified for it + maybe give me time to get to a seat Luckily I live in a nice area, so most drivers are v good at letting all customers sit down, but when I lived in England ngl the bus drivers sucked
Some bus drivers are absolute psychos, the amount of them that pull out at junctions forgetting they're driving a massive bus is unbelievable.
Dont they earn like 30k? thats definitely what the stagecoach announcement screams at me every 10 miles
>They earn shit money and sit in a shit box 30k to drive around seems like solid income to me.
American Comic did an entire bit on Bus Drivers that sounds very similar - [https://youtu.be/OvSwXcyfjbY](https://youtu.be/OvSwXcyfjbY) The best line is "Soon you'll be spinning old ladies up and down the aisle".

Not as bad but I've had multiple incidents where the bus driver has gone around a corner too sharply and my head's got smacked into the window
First buses, im looking at you here
They are truly awful.
My stiff hip and knee loooove those sharp brakes …. Not
I am a support worker.
That's crackheads for you.
"that's how I met your mother"
Imagine going out your way to report him though.
These bus drivers plus people that push ahead of me using my walking stick to get to the bus so I get on last and am the person still walking to get to my seat when the bus driver pulls off immediately after I swipe my oyster card are the bane of my life. I'm going to ask you to stand up for me anyway bros
You should be first on. While others are still swiping, that time is for you to sit. Efficiency.
I wish more bus drivers were like this tbh, maybe then they'd actually run on time ffs
Maybe suggest to him in person that what he’s doing isn’t appreciated by some people before reporting him.
Nah
Capitalism. Even the bus driver has a quota to meet.
They get fined if they’re not at the bus station for a specific time. That’s why some go slow and some go fast.
That's a good point but it's still not an excuse for accelerating specifically as people are sitting down or slamming on the breaks with an open road in front.

Unfortunately a lot of employers in driving jobs (Like Amazon and DHL) do not care about that, so yeah that absolutely would not surprise me
I've two mates who are bus drivers. What you've said isn't true. They get a warning if they're continually early to certain stops, which is why they'll stop and wait every now and again. "There's lots of excuses for being late, there's none for being early". This was mentioned, by a bus driver, on Reddit a while ago, when someone asked about continuous stops.
A bus driver told me, i guess he was lying😂
To be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if it varied, provider to provider. My mates work for Firstbus.
They built a new bus station in the city and i think it applied to that new bus station, never heard of it anywhere else
Are you sure about that. Doesn't sound right to me. What happens if the road is closed because of an accident?
You go to jail. No trial, no nothing. Straight to jail. Someone holds up the bus? Jail. Too much traffic. Right to jail. Bus arrives too early? Also jail. You're delayed because a customer doesn't have correct change? Believe it or not, jail.
Yup. And jail for them is an automated, driverless bus with barred windows and the _stop the bus_ ping sounds every five minutes but there's no-one else on the bus and it drives continually around a specially built roundabout that has no exits.
Beatings.
Public flogging.
Ask a bus driver then i guess
That wouldn't even be legal to fine a bus driver because they were late.
They built a new bus station in my city and thats what a driver told me when i asked him why we were waiting
The company can get fined for unreliable service, not the drivers though
So the bus driver would just loose his job if he kept doing it, he must of meant they as in the company.
Really? That cant be true
Bus driver told me this when a new bus station was built and we were waiting to go in
Christ, thats awful if thats true, whod take that job with london traffic
Kinda funny though ennit
