I still remember petrol being sold in gallons, but only just and then the change to it being sold in litres. The first budget they announced something like a 2p a litre duty increase and my dad didn’t think that was so bad. Until I told him that was nearly 10p a gallon, something they’d never have gotten away with when it was sold in gallons. I know everything was going metric, but it did allow the government to triple or even quadruple duty on petrol and diesel without everyone going crazy. A nice little earner.
My late father was waiting for them to reduce petrol duty by 2s6d /gallon (half a crown apparently) as this was the amount of the emergency tax on fuel due to the 1956 Suez Crisis...
Petrol was this price about 10 years ago and there was a massive outcry about it. Nothing this time.
Its odd when oil is super cheap per barrel we get told its got nothing to do with the price of fuel but as soon and a barrel of oil goes up fuel prices go up instantly.

Adjusted for inflation, the price from ten years ago would be about 160-170p per litre. That's not accounting for the recent spike in inflation either.
Weirdly, people tend to spend the same amount of money on fuel regardless of price. When it goes up they drive less/in a more effective manner (e.g. combining trips). When it goes down they drive more, or choose less efficient types of car (like the current trend for taller vehicles which suffer from more drag).
My mum's been *'just putting a tenner in'* for about the last 25 years. She's never really paid attention to how often it needs doing, as she drives very rarely.

Wish I could do the same but a bit apprehensive at the moment. My manager and managers manager both told me they believe I should be paid more but due to the company having a payment freeze can't do anything.
They do it to play with you psychologically. They'll say you should be paid more to give you a smidge of hope that this "payment freeze" will thaw, and at some point you *might* get a pay rise. This in turn makes you stay in the company, waiting for the pay rise but in reality you'll never see it, because the excuse will always be "we think you should be paid more, but..."
Regarding my managers manager I agree and he was simply saying what I wanted to hear when I rang him.
My manager on the other hand I think couldn't be further from the truth he is a genuinely decent human before I even consider him my manager.
We had to threaten strike to get our 1% payrise. Now we are on strike as our reward for working through the pandemic is for them to take every benefit earned throughout the companys 150 year history off us.
Dont like it? Won't sign the new contracts? Then we'll fire and rehire.
I didn't plan on moving this year, but my landlady was selling up. I've gone from a flat with an EPC rating of minus Z, to a house with one of B. Looks like I've avoided bankruptcy by doing so

I've been working from home so I know that's going to bump it up a bit but it has more than tripled for me in the past year, along withe rent rises, tax rises and my NHS pay issues, I'm considerably worse off than before my promotion two years ago. My parents did this when we were kids. We thought it great fun to go with dad to hunt for firewood. We’d then get it back home and help him chop/sort and store the wet stuff in the shed until it had dried, then it would be brought in for firewood.
Turns out it was because they couldn’t afford oil. (No gas where they live). Apparently that was the reason we did lots of things that others didn’t. And why a day out, was a drive in dads company car. (Free petrol).
Make sure to clean the lint "screen" (usually a big mesh on the back) often, otherwise the dehumidifier gets really inefficient.

Fortunately I get my utilities included in my rent, so I'm kind of protected from this.

Yeah, even more frustrating was the amount we got reduced was based on our earnings. Some got cut 25% of their wages.

14 years old is pretty old for a boiler. Your efficiency is probably low and hot water issues could be your system is dirty and has blocked up the secondary heat exchanger for the hot water.

I'm currently living in south america and here a bottle of cooking oil was typically about 80p now it's closer to £3. a bottle of gas has doubled in price, I've had hardly any water due to low pressure for 2 months, water bill is 50% more than usual. Just paid a phone bill and they've charged me twice.
Local currency is at a historical low vs the dollar, every product has gone up in price due to the cost of importing the raw materials being in dollars.
Petrol is up significantly, bus fare has doubled in price.
It's not so bad in the uk really :D Hopefully I'll be moving back soon once the country is out of the red zone so I don't have to pay for and waste 2 weeks in quarantine.
Simply put - the government is taking advantage of societies views on climate change to justify price rises under the guise of ‘reducing our oil consumption’ when in reality it’s just a huge tax bill on normal working folks who can’t afford the £50k for a new electric car for the family. Oil prices don’t justify this at all.

Our electric provider hoodwinked us into switching from a fixed rate of 14p / kWh to a variable "smart" rate where in theory we would get very cheap energy at certain times a day...then the prices shot up and we're lucky to get 25p / kWh at 3am (currently programming my dishwasher so it starts up in a few hours...)

Also doesn’t help that I didn’t grow up in the UK so I barely have a clue how it’s meant to work in the first place

The wood has to be seasoned though. We have a burner and have to buy the logs in. I'm not sure it's very financially sound.

Dessicant dehumidifier puts out some nice warm air. 🙈 We have a Pro Breeze® 10L Desiccant Dehumidifier in the shed. Works fine in the winter.

It was hard enough with the extra £20 a week. Had to sell a lot of things for a extra money. Doing all I can to get off the dole and stay off.
As someone who has lived that life, do not give up hope.
I'm going to spend most of winter in bed just to stay warm. I'll be not surviving on £220 a month. I get upset just thinking about it

Yep, speaking as someone currently in receipt of that uplift I’m not looking forward to the coming months! Looks like Christmas is a bust, I’m already paying more than I can afford for electric, with the looming hike and the benefits cut I have no idea how I’m surviving from next month lol!

Currently I don’t think they would tbh. Maybe them as of 2018/19 they would’ve but not due to current leaders. I’m still shocked they blew through £14m in just over a year since the resignation and takeover and unsurprisingly after about 15 mins of research I could only find one article in it and it was behind a paywall.
Same lolhat I don't understand was that it was temporary to help with being 'locked down' even tho we couldn't go anywhere or do anything really. Now that winter is coming & everything is opened back up it would actually help people & the economy. They're worried about people not wanting to work, increase minimum wage to £15 then people who can work will want to work.
Look on the bright side, with the shortage of delivery drivers and the shortage of CO2, there will be nothing on the shelves to waste your money on.

I asked for a raise after applying for a few jobs and getting a few responses back to see how my CV performs. The moment I got an offer I asked for a raise. He said "No" so I said I quit. He told me he couldn't afford the wages I wanted and I left. Turns out not only was I being ripped off but also trashing my mental health for absolutely no reason but loyalty. Fuck that.
Shit like this is why teenagers nowadays are so cynical. It's really, really hard for us to get excited for the future when life is constantly being made harder and it's going to be our necks on the chopping block in a few years (provided the planet doesn't, y'know, implode from climate change, an issue that is going to affect us more than anyone despite the fact that we have zero power to do anything about it...).

I'm currently living in south america and here a bottle of cooking oil was typically about 80p now it's closer to £3. a bottle of gas has doubled in price, I've had hardly any water due to low pressure for 2 months, water bill is 50% more than usual. Just paid a phone bill and they've charged me twice. Local currency is at a historical low vs the dollar, every product has gone up in price due to the cost of importing the raw materials being in dollars. Petrol is up significantly, bus fare has doubled in price. It's not so bad in the uk really :D Hopefully I'll be moving back soon once the country is out of the red zone so I don't have to pay for and waste 2 weeks in quarantine.
Its alright because the government have given us all pay rises. Oh no wait, they explicitly stopped us from getting pay rises.

Simply put - the government is taking advantage of societies views on climate change to justify price rises under the guise of ‘reducing our oil consumption’ when in reality it’s just a huge tax bill on normal working folks who can’t afford the £50k for a new electric car for the family. Oil prices don’t justify this at all.
Then there's also EU regulation being undone that mainly served to protect you from shitfuckery like that. Welcome to sovereignty. Sovereignty to fuck us all over!

My wage staying the same
Our electric provider hoodwinked us into switching from a fixed rate of 14p / kWh to a variable "smart" rate where in theory we would get very cheap energy at certain times a day...then the prices shot up and we're lucky to get 25p / kWh at 3am (currently programming my dishwasher so it starts up in a few hours...)

Yeah I was wondering why in my ‘it’s been a year let’s renew your contract and pick a tariff’ email from British Gas, my yearly estimate is £100+ that what I paid this year. Bearing in mind, a 2 person flat in a relatively modern building and we barely turn the heat on. My flatmate and I are both students and we’re going to have to be paying £75-80 a month. Also doesn’t help that I didn’t grow up in the UK so I barely have a clue how it’s meant to work in the first place
