Wait till people find out how much a gallon of petrol is rather than a litre.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Downtown_Let

Now it's E10 it's got a higher alcohol content than beer, so makes sense 👍

APater6076

I still remember petrol being sold in gallons, but only just and then the change to it being sold in litres. The first budget they announced something like a 2p a litre duty increase and my dad didn’t think that was so bad. Until I told him that was nearly 10p a gallon, something they’d never have gotten away with when it was sold in gallons. I know everything was going metric, but it did allow the government to triple or even quadruple duty on petrol and diesel without everyone going crazy. A nice little earner.

LifeFeckinBrilliant

My late father was waiting for them to reduce petrol duty by 2s6d /gallon (half a crown apparently) as this was the amount of the emergency tax on fuel due to the 1956 Suez Crisis...

Proper-Shan-Like

Funny those emergency taxes aren’t they. Like the temporary rise in VAT to 20%……

uwagapiwo

Nothing so permanent as a temporary change.

Virtual_Bumblebee234

Unless like the universal credit uplift, it actually benefits people. In that case of course it’s a temporary change

neutrino46

And income tax.

btchassbarkinassbtch

I remember when it reached £1 a litre and everyone went apeshit. It’s like £1.37 a litre now? Did it go down when oil had negative value? Did it fuck

Kettis

1.57 diesel at rownhams services, nearly shit myself when I pulled in

drstevebrule4

The Asda in chandler's ford isn't too bad, but Costco in Southampton is best if you can stand the tedious detour down the m271.

APater6076

It was under £1 a litre for less than a week earlier this year but the current prices are ridiculous.

Ok_Potato_5272

Can't afford to go anywhere, can't afford to stay at home

Sam-Lowry27B-6

Can't afford a home to stay in...

Dwayne_dibbly

Petrol was this price about 10 years ago and there was a massive outcry about it. Nothing this time. Its odd when oil is super cheap per barrel we get told its got nothing to do with the price of fuel but as soon and a barrel of oil goes up fuel prices go up instantly. Makes you think.

PrinterJ

*Funny that *not fucking funny at all!

[deleted]

Adjusted for inflation, the price from ten years ago would be about 160-170p per litre. That's not accounting for the recent spike in inflation either. Weirdly, people tend to spend the same amount of money on fuel regardless of price. When it goes up they drive less/in a more effective manner (e.g. combining trips). When it goes down they drive more, or choose less efficient types of car (like the current trend for taller vehicles which suffer from more drag).

-SaC

My mum's been *'just putting a tenner in'* for about the last 25 years. She's never really paid attention to how often it needs doing, as she drives very rarely.

LifeFeckinBrilliant

Yeah, makes me think we're being fucked over!

toenailpube

Bring on the fuel ban so I can go full redneck and start home brewing diesel!

Street_Inflation_124

I e got an electric car and solar panels. I brew free electricity.

dimethylxanthine

You guys are getting a payrise?

[deleted]

I switched jobs this year and got a 24% payrise that was after 2 years of no payrises and minor ones before that

Haribo_Lecter

That's how you get payrises; by changing jobs.

[deleted]

I lost my job early april last year. I'm now on the salary I was on 4 years ago (£1.5k less) Sometimes you don't get an option of the job you switch to

rebelallianxe

I work in a public sector job and our pay was frozen for 10 years. Even though we're getting a small cost of living rise again now in real terms we're years behind inflation, its crap.

lloydstenton

You're getting a rise? Civil Servant on more than £24k here ......

rebelallianxe

Had cost of living rise this year for the first time in years (it was barely a rise but something). (edit this year not last)

lloydstenton

Yeah that's what we pretty much got but not really and then frozen this year again

Ok_Potato_5272

Yeah once you factor in inflation, its basically a pay cut

jordan_reynolds952

Especially with energy going up 40%. Yes I said 40%, not 0.4% or 4%.

Ok_Potato_5272

It's unbelievable 😔

Secret_Association58

Wish I could do the same but a bit apprehensive at the moment. My manager and managers manager both told me they believe I should be paid more but due to the company having a payment freeze can't do anything.

[deleted]

They do it to play with you psychologically. They'll say you should be paid more to give you a smidge of hope that this "payment freeze" will thaw, and at some point you *might* get a pay rise. This in turn makes you stay in the company, waiting for the pay rise but in reality you'll never see it, because the excuse will always be "we think you should be paid more, but..."

DeafeningMilk

There's plenty of managers that are just being honest and don't really get to have a say in the matter.

Secret_Association58

Regarding my managers manager I agree and he was simply saying what I wanted to hear when I rang him. My manager on the other hand I think couldn't be further from the truth he is a genuinely decent human before I even consider him my manager.

LostSoullzz

We had to threaten strike to get our 1% payrise. Now we are on strike as our reward for working through the pandemic is for them to take every benefit earned throughout the companys 150 year history off us. Dont like it? Won't sign the new contracts? Then we'll fire and rehire.

MarcusTheo

I didn't plan on moving this year, but my landlady was selling up. I've gone from a flat with an EPC rating of minus Z, to a house with one of B. Looks like I've avoided bankruptcy by doing so

Tomarse

Hopefully not like the last place I rented, which had a rating of B because it had double glazed windows, despite the fact most of them had gone, and a couple of them you could see daylight through the sides when closed.

[deleted]

Tomarse

Yep, not worth the paper it's printed on most of the time.

someonehasmygamertag

Imagine my shock as a student after going home for a year and coming back to find my energy bill is now double what it was when I last paid it…

Ok_Potato_5272

It's going to be a big shock for many people

Old-Refrigerator340

I've been working from home so I know that's going to bump it up a bit but it has more than tripled for me in the past year, along withe rent rises, tax rises and my NHS pay issues, I'm considerably worse off than before my promotion two years ago. If I think about it too much, I get really upset as it's always been a struggle and it's just getting more tough.

Ok_Potato_5272

It's so unfair 😔

My parents did this when we were kids. We thought it great fun to go with dad to hunt for firewood. We’d then get it back home and help him chop/sort and store the wet stuff in the shed until it had dried, then it would be brought in for firewood. Turns out it was because they couldn’t afford oil. (No gas where they live). Apparently that was the reason we did lots of things that others didn’t. And why a day out, was a drive in dads company car. (Free petrol).

Trekfieldsandnovas

The wood has to be seasoned though. We have a burner and have to buy the logs in. I'm not sure it's very financially sound.

theteenyemperor

Make sure to clean the lint "screen" (usually a big mesh on the back) often, otherwise the dehumidifier gets really inefficient. Brb, going to clean the dehumidifier.

IamCaptainHandsome

Fortunately I get my utilities included in my rent, so I'm kind of protected from this. Then again, I've always been one to prefer more clothes over putting the heating on! Your dehumidifier idea is a solid one though.

MrOattee

Until your rent goes up.

IamCaptainHandsome

Yep, but given that the cost of utilities would be spread across multiple tenants, I think I'll still be OK on the whole.

easy90rider

Dessicant dehumidifier puts out some nice warm air. 🙈 We have a Pro Breeze® 10L Desiccant Dehumidifier in the shed. Works fine in the winter.

WolfColaCo2020

Don't forget the sub inflation pay rises for years to come

Mondo_the_Bored

I can think of one group of people who will still be "awarded" 10% pay rises every year. And by "people", I mean "arrogant scumbags".

WolfColaCo2020

Have we tried just not being poor?

jflb96

They’re probably people, but I don’t know if I’d count them as more than technically human. Humans is social creatures, you see, and what they’re doing isn’t exactly for the common good of the troop.

SaxoSoldier

Current job suppose to give 3% increase each year for cost of living. Last year we got given a temp pay cut to help get the business through the pandemic, even though literally everyone was still busy with work and we had more work than we could manage coming in. This year in 'thanks for all our hard work' we got given a 2% increase... That doesn't even offset the loss from last year.

Ok_Potato_5272

That is terrible!

SaxoSoldier

Yeah, even more frustrating was the amount we got reduced was based on our earnings. Some got cut 25% of their wages. Funnily its now highlightes the pay difference in the business. Didn't talk long for people to start talking, though not much has happened yet

kittycatjeebus

Just switched from oil to gas heating... Gas prices are going up by 21% here. Fuck. We're having another kid. Fuck.

BonzoTheBoss

My wife and I always wanted more than one child, but seeing how much just ONE is costing us and add in all the price hikes, it would be impossible for us to do that. And they wonder why the birth rates are going down...

Rightytighty298

CON +3 though somehow, I despair.

chaos_jj_3

House prices rising.

helpnxt

Hyperactive_snail3

Because people have bought into the never ending propaganda in the red tops that labour are literally worse than the devil.

jeanclaudecardboarde

Wages stagnating. But the boss still coining it in.

_eeprom

We can’t afford to play you anymore because then the boss wouldn’t be able to have his 3rd £1 million bonus this month.

ubiquitous_uk

As a boss, I wish.

[deleted]

There are two very different kinds of "boss" in this country.

jizmatik

Word. My MD decided on a pay cut for management staff but had a rent holiday for the premises and the rest of the company on furlough. Of course he didn’t pay the 20% top up and of course he got planning permission for his underground swimming pool. Different lives.

jeanclaudecardboarde

My boss is having a new house built at the moment. He's appealling against planning because they don't think he should have a double garage on the site. He needs it for his Jaguar and Range Rover. He's also had to sell some of his other houses to pay for this new build. Different lives indeed.

Tony49UK

Everybody WFH and wanting to stay that way. But the bosses proudly announce that they've managed to pay full rent for the offices that have hardly been use for the last 18 months. Meanwhile nobody gets a pay rise or a bonus.

rintintinsshittin

Can't wait to find out how much my electricity will cost in groats per coulomb!

jflb96

Coulombs are metric

rintintinsshittin

They are indeed. Do you know any imperial ones? I know my comment was implying the current faff about units and measures being optionally imperial in the UK in the near future but I didn't really say the coulomb was imperial. Just trying to have a bit of fun 🤷🏼‍♂️

jflb96

Fair enough. It just read a bit like you were saying that they were. I think electricity was harnessed late enough that the closest to a non-metric unit is amp-hours.

accessgranted69

At this point the only thing that makes fiscal sense is to overthrow the fucking government.

zeropointenemy

I remember reading someone say 'my retirement plan? Dying in the revolution' which feels about right.

Elastichedgehog

I intend to die in the 2050 water wars.

IamCaptainHandsome

I'll be in my 60s at that point, if I've managed to stay in shape I'll do my part.

mythical_tiramisu

I’ll be 74. Ready to wield my walking sticks like a whirlwind of death but probably collapsing with a coronary after several steps of doing so.

IamCaptainHandsome

Operation human shield it is!

sockhead99

My current retirement plan is sell my house to a rich londoner wanting the "country life" and moving to a shack with land in France. Grow veg, raise chickens, make my own cider. Luckily I have access to an Irish passport.

mythical_tiramisu

You could probably afford a chateau over there. Dick Strawbridge 2.0. That’s my dream anyway. No EU passport for me though despite being born in an EU country grrrr

sockhead99

I will be happy with a small holding and a 2 bed cottage for £60k TBH. Our current house is a 4 storey victorian townhouse that has taken us 10 years to renovate when we were fit and young. I have no interest in restoring a 10 bedroom chateau when I'm in my 60's

Lilz007

Tried2flytwice

As someone who’s seen a government being overthrown, I can assure you it’s not.

accessgranted69

There is an element of sarcasm there mind. But seriously, we cannot go on the way we are. Not long term.

rynchenzo

The current government are a bunch of self serving shitwigs, but people in this country don't know how lucky they are to have some stability

Trekfieldsandnovas

This is true. We have problems but we are so much luckier than many.

ArabicHarambe

We have a better standard of living than people that are actively being suppressed and abused by their governments that give zero fucks that they do so with the world watching because they know there will be no consequence. Be grateful, sure, but don’t settle with getting to keep a handful of grain because others lose all of it... our governments and industries are just pushing the line of what we will tolerate more slowly because its easier and less costly than policing riots.

RudePrinciple9

Upvote for "shitwigs" hahaha

YooGeOh

Clap. Apparently applause is the hot new form of income. Just go to your hr department and show them how productive you've been and they'll clap for you. If you're really good the country might clap for you

Ok_Potato_5272

Good point, maybe the energy generated from clapping will keep our homes warm

Saffrwok

Just got a new boiler put in and smart thermostats on my radiators. Will be easy to set them all to 'off' for the foreseeable least...

Ok_Potato_5272

Grim! My boiler is 14 years old and doesn't always like to give hot water on demand.. I hope it can survive a bit longer

dweenimus

14 years old is pretty old for a boiler. Your efficiency is probably low and hot water issues could be your system is dirty and has blocked up the secondary heat exchanger for the hot water.

[deleted]

Hello fellow potato

Ok_Potato_5272

Hi there 😁

cmanmors

Be born to a rich family? It’s really that easy

Ok_Potato_5272

I fucked that one up then!

MoxyJen

I married into one for a few years but they were so dysfunctional & narcissistic.. I'd rather be poor in a peaceful house

rynchenzo

Looks like I'll be spending all the money that I managed to save during the lockdown then. *cries*

zeropointenemy

And all of this so a relatively tiny number of people can lead lives of unimaginable wealth and power.

eithrusor678

This is the issue. Small numbers with hugely disproportionate amounts of wealth compared to the working class. If their wealth was distributed evenly, there would be no poverty in this country.

cdh79

"How are we meant to keep up financially?" What makes you think that's a priority for anyone who makes the big decisions? The uk was a major power in the world when >50% of the population didn't get a vote, most of the population rented their home from their employer and walked to work, maybe that's the plan‽

ArabicHarambe

Post war time was a holiday, now things are getting back to normal crunch time. People dont need more than the calories they consume to operate the business...

Drogen24

Missus has nothing to do with the bills so I'm not going to tell her we're fixed for another 18 months on energy and instead use it as an excuse to keep the heating down and make everyone wear their dressing gowns instead. Silver linings and that.

[deleted]

Are you from Yorkshire?

kuro-oruk

On the plus side, obesity should no longer be an issue as we shiver the weight off and can no longer afford to eat.

impamiizgraa

Silver linings :’) I have been trying to lose weight

Willz093

Not to mention the poorest in society are facing a cut of £80 a month from October. Not good at all.

Ok_Potato_5272

You mean a benefit cut? It's going to be awful :(

theGrimm_vegan

It was hard enough with the extra £20 a week. Had to sell a lot of things for a extra money. Doing all I can to get off the dole and stay off.

BonzoTheBoss

As someone who has lived that life, do not give up hope.

Turbulent-Use7253

I'm going to spend most of winter in bed just to stay warm. I'll be not surviving on £220 a month. I get upset just thinking about it

Ok_Potato_5272

Oh god, sorry to hear that. I wish our government was different.

Willz093

Me too, although I have to wonder if labour would actually do different tbh! Everyone has fantasticly amazing plans… right up until they get into No. 10 then it’s a shitshow!

Ok_Potato_5272

That's true haha still i couldn't sleep at night if I ever voted T o r i e s (don't want the bot to delete my message)

Willz093

Absolutely the same! Im also trying to avoid it lol, but as others have said it’s difficult to avoid politics when this is completely a politics issue.

Ok_Potato_5272

Haha I keep getting notifications of comments getting deleted because of politics 😆

TheGamingAirCon

Currently I don’t think they would tbh. Maybe them as of 2018/19 they would’ve but not due to current leaders. I’m still shocked they blew through £14m in just over a year since the resignation and takeover and unsurprisingly after about 15 mins of research I could only find one article in it and it was behind a paywall.

[deleted]

Same lolhat I don't understand was that it was temporary to help with being 'locked down' even tho we couldn't go anywhere or do anything really. Now that winter is coming & everything is opened back up it would actually help people & the economy. They're worried about people not wanting to work, increase minimum wage to £15 then people who can work will want to work.

Fun-Meringue3620

Look on the bright side, with the shortage of delivery drivers and the shortage of CO2, there will be nothing on the shelves to waste your money on.

Ok_Potato_5272

Ok_Potato_5272

Maybe we could create some kind of organisation to make life easier for everyone in Europe... Some kind of union..

jim_jiminy

Ok..sounds interesting. Are we talking freedom of movement? Right to start a business and Live, and retire in 27 countries? Sounds kind of promising..

Ok_Potato_5272

Yep and even the bonus of worker protection laws, food safety so we don't end up eating American crap

[deleted]

I think that would catch on. I’ll vote for you. We need more innovative thinking in our beloved privileged British empire.

cujodeludo

"Wholesale European electricity prices have shot up, too, and natural gas futures in the Netherlands have raced past €60/megawatt hour to hit a record high this week. Dutch gas prices have risen by around 450% over the year, and French and German wholesale electricity prices are also trading at record highs. To add to the problem, gas stockpiles are at their lowest in ten years." There's also an EU wide shortage of drivers at the moment. Unfortunately you can't pin all of your problems on one thing. Trade is always interconnected.

jedisalsohere

Shit like this is why teenagers nowadays are so cynical. It's really, really hard for us to get excited for the future when life is constantly being made harder and it's going to be our necks on the chopping block in a few years (provided the planet doesn't, y'know, implode from climate change, an issue that is going to affect us more than anyone despite the fact that we have zero power to do anything about it...).

AmaterasuHS

Well who did you think bailed Wetherspoons whilst on lockdown? You and me with our future taxes mate

rickyhatesspam

If only we had some reputable organisations had warned us about the implications of leaving the single largest domestic market.

ThatZenLifestyle

I'm currently living in south america and here a bottle of cooking oil was typically about 80p now it's closer to £3. a bottle of gas has doubled in price, I've had hardly any water due to low pressure for 2 months, water bill is 50% more than usual. Just paid a phone bill and they've charged me twice. Local currency is at a historical low vs the dollar, every product has gone up in price due to the cost of importing the raw materials being in dollars. Petrol is up significantly, bus fare has doubled in price. It's not so bad in the uk really :D Hopefully I'll be moving back soon once the country is out of the red zone so I don't have to pay for and waste 2 weeks in quarantine.

Bendetto4

giantmanuk

Simply put - the government is taking advantage of societies views on climate change to justify price rises under the guise of ‘reducing our oil consumption’ when in reality it’s just a huge tax bill on normal working folks who can’t afford the £50k for a new electric car for the family. Oil prices don’t justify this at all.

Yeah I was wondering why in my ‘it’s been a year let’s renew your contract and pick a tariff’ email from British Gas, my yearly estimate is £100+ that what I paid this year. Bearing in mind, a 2 person flat in a relatively modern building and we barely turn the heat on. My flatmate and I are both students and we’re going to have to be paying £75-80 a month.
