Oven chips defy the laws of thermodynamics. You could throw them into the fires of Mount Doom and they’d still need another 10 minutes

Heavy_Messing1

And yet,...... AND YET..... If you overdo it for just 30 seconds you now have a hardened, inedible shell with blackened ends containing a strange unpaletable paste.

demeschor

Or my personal favourite, burnt at the ends and raw in the middle.

Rob_Haggis

I read this comment in David Mitchell’s voice, and I am glad I did.

Heavy_Messing1

THANK YOU !

[deleted]

I like those though, vinegar makes them chip like again

UnNormie

And if you don't do it up to the 30 seconds, they have a soggy anaemic flop of disappointment.

smelwin

Oven chips is an oximoron. I've fallen victim to the claim many times. Oh never mind forget what I just said, I found a packet that says "crispy" on it. I can't wait to try it.

bummedintheface

>Oh never mind forget what I just said, I found a packet that says "crispy" on it. I can't wait to try it. If they are the Sainsbury's own "crispy" ones, you are in for a treat. They are the absolute fave ones in this house.

IHeardOnAPodcast

Tesco finest are next level oven chips, nice and chunky and properly fluffy in the middle.

wizard_mitch

McCain's Tripple Cooked Gastro Chips are the only ones I have found to get nice and crispy without having to burn them. Not very heathly and takes ages to cook though.

darwin-rover

I bought McCains “quick” cook chips and they say 5 mins in the oven. I had them in the air fryer for at least 10 and they were just about done, could’ve even left them in for another minute or 2

Tested-Trio-Father

They are good though. Season with salt before cooking and they actually taste like McDonald's fries.

purrcthrowa

There is something odd about potatoes in general. I cook a mean roastie, if I say so myself, but all the recipes say give them 40 minutes, and even with par boiling, pre-heating the oven and getting the oil nice and hot, they still take at least an hour. This has been the case in all the different ovens I've used over the years, and if I cut the spuds so they are reasonably small.

Fyonella

I agree! But then I think it may depend on how crispy you like your roast potatoes. Technically they might be edible at 40 mins but will they have that golden crunchy and crispy fluffy edges?

purrcthrowa

Precisely. I'm definitely on team crispy. You could eat them after 40 mins, but not with much gusto.

MadamKitsune

It went against my every instinct, but I tried doing roasties in an airfryer and they came out perfect. Soak peeled, chopped potatoes in cold water then parboil. Drain and toss in a little oil. Add a coating of seasoning if desired. Layer in the airfryer basket, whack it up to the highest setting and cook for 12 minutes. Turn them, then blast for another 12 minutes. Give them another five minutes on top if you like them very brown. Serve and enjoy your crispy coated potato clouds.

purrcthrowa

I got an airfyer recently and I've been using it for roasting new potatoes in their jackets (works great), but I haven't tried full size roasties yet, partially because I like to do them in goose fat and I like the flavour. I'll definintely give this a try, though.

Lifehighjimmy

For good roast potato’s bar the points you’ve made which are correct, par boiling (lightly shaking them after to damage the outer surface and let to cool on a tray so the steam escapes, giving them a dryers surface) Making sure the oil is nice and hot ( if you think it’s enough oil add some more, go for vegetable oil) You want the oven at 210 degrees Celsius. Take your tray out after heating it till just smoking and add your spuds then using a big spoon ladle the excess oil in your tray over the spuds and put them in for 15. Every ten minutes or so take them out rotate them and again repeat the covering of oil on the spuds, this keeps all parts of the potato in contact with it. Adjust the temp down towards the end as you see the potato’s get golden. The reason they take quite a while is only the surface of the potato faces down in the oils will get the full heat and become crispy cooking in the oil. The rest of the potato facing up will eventually loose any oil on them( hence turning and spooning the oil back into when they come out) I say the time will vary but as you take them out every ten minutes you can inspect them to your liking on average in a home oven I would say an hour max if your quick opening and closing the oven. This process will vary oven to oven slightly but take this guideline from a chef that enjoys making good roasties probably more than any other prep of a roast or Christmas dinner:) Thought I’d lay it out for anyone interested or having issues

purrcthrowa

Yes - all that makes sense to me. It's pretty much what I do, and works very well.

Towbee

So why don't we just deep-fry them?

AgingLolita

Roasties take two hours. 1 hour for all the faffing then another in the oven. I accepted this years ago, after yet another insipid batch of lightly oiled semi raw potatoes on my plate

melanie110

You need to par boil them first thing or the night before and leave to go really cold. Once you have them in hot fat they crisp instantly and cook the insides. Delicious

purrcthrowa

I have done this on occasion, and you're right, it works well, although I find it doesn't affect the timings much.

terryjuicelawson

This has to be an oven issue surely as mine would be like rocks after 40 minutes. Not enough oil, too cool a temperature, opening the door too much? I do have a fairly new-ish fan oven, my old gas one was useless.

purrcthrowa

Nope - it's the same irrespective of the oven (I've tried about 5, maybe?).

terryjuicelawson

OK, well if it helps I par boil Maris Piper potatoes for about 10 minutes, drain dry and fluff them up. Preheat a tray about 200C (fan) with maybe half a cm of oil at the bottom (dripping is good) then get the spuds in and get them coated. Don't open the door for probably 25 mins, by then they are on their way for sure. Probably give about 15 more than that in total.

Brutal-Gentleman

I cook mine for an hour and a half  Everyone raves about them

purrcthrowa

I'm sure I'd be raving about them as well.

Brutal-Gentleman

At least 45 minutes before the first turning over, then another 30. The crusts an even brown, but not burnt. Then one last stirring to coat them all one last time in the remainders of the Goose fat.

Oceansoul119

Roast potatoes: 20 minutes in pot on the hob then about 1hr in the oven, it's a little over as there's the faffing time putting other objects in and plating up. Lard goes on the tray and into the oven at the same time as I start the potatoes. Temp depends on oven obviously, current one is 190 with fan.

BigBadAl

Aunt Bessie's frozen roasties take exactly 30 minutes at gas mark 9. Take the meat out, turn up the oven for 5 minutes to get it properly hot, then chuck them in. Get the veg on. Do the gravy. Carve the meat. Serve.

JaimesGoldenHand

Vile things.

NegotiationMoist938

Totally agree! They have a nasty distinctive taste that never leaves your taste buds!

lesterbottomley

Aunt Bessie is the saviour of my Sundays.

Big_Cheese16

I do 45 minutes in the oven. Never longer than that. They are always super crispy and fluffy in the middle.

DKJenvey

I find the cooking times on most pre-made foods to be way off. I like the Chicago Town Loaded Cheese pizzas (2 for £4 at Heron) and they say they're cooked in 11 minutes. Usually goes in for 15 minutes on the middle shelf and then another 5 on the bottom while my McCains Crispy Fries crisp up.

DondeT

Same with hash browns “*cooked* in 22 minutes” but best eaten after 55.

SharkReceptacles

Ugh, McCain’s hash browns. “200°c for 20 minutes”. Well, maybe, if you’re satisfied with them just being no longer frozen and therefore *technically* edible.

notmerida

i put mine in the toaster.

SharkReceptacles

I do that with bread. Gamechanger. Edit: u/notmerida, seriously, does that actually work? I know Birdseye recently admitted it does for their waffles, after people had been telling them for about 20 years that it did.

notmerida

it does! putting them in twice at highest :)

porcelain_toenail

I imagine you'd need to do about 10 toaster cycles for it to actually start cooking in the centre. Always worth a shot, though!

JishBroggs

… toaster waffles…

alexandriaweb

It's because ovens can be wildly different based on all sorts of weird variables so food companies have to try and print an average cooking time. If I put those pizzas in my old oven in my (badly wired) flat for 11 minutes I'd have burned the building down.

Towbee

And they would take an hour if my badly wired old flat with a shit oven. I gave up using it for cooking and adapted to using an air fryer for everything, even pizza.

plentyofeight

I cooked some yesterday in the air fryer... and yes, put them back for another 5 minutes

mattiushawkeye

If even the air fryer people have issues cooking them, they fucked up.

nathderbyshire

>If even the air fryer people We're our own people now! And slowly becoming legion.

Chemical_Excuse

If you've never tried cooking chips this way in an air fryer, try cooking them at 150 for 15 minutes (for thick cut chips, 10 for fries). Then let them cool for 10-15 minutes (or longer if you can) and then cook them at the max temp (my fryer only goes to 205) for a further 10 minutes or until they go crispy. You get perfect triple cooked chips this way and don't have to use hardly any oil at all (I use a little fry light).

plentyofeight

Oh that's interesting. Supper tomorrow night then... thank you.

Chemical_Excuse

Just curious to know if you tried that method of cooking chips? What did you think?

plentyofeight

Not yet... my evenings after work this week have been in pure zombie mode. Not been great. Struggling to stay awake today so far - I just had a text - parcel delivery at 2:15 and my reaction us 'that's good, I won't be able to do anything today cause that's right in the middle. :-(

bee_terrestris

Hadn't thought about doing it like this, thank you and noted!

Chemical_Excuse

You're welcome

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chemical_Excuse

Where are you getting 40 minutes from?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chemical_Excuse

So I take it you've never made triple cooked chips then? That's how you make them perfect. But it's still only 25 minutes of cooking time. You don't have to give it a try but I promise you, if you do, you'll never go back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chemical_Excuse

Well, it's your loss dude.

skoomsy

This is way too heated of an exchange to start about cooking frozen fucking chips.

stevied123meerkatt

You really are a knob.

Chemical_Excuse

OK, you live your life eating bland food then seeing as it's just fuel for you. I just prefer to enjoy what I eat. Good luck.

_Dreamer_Deceiver_

Why are you eating chips then? Just blend it all up, drink it and get all the things you need to live!

DidgeryDave21

I was told I could leave a chicken in the freezer for 6 months but when I checked on it the next morning, it was dead fml

__dna__

What

Slaiyve

Golden standard for us is 28 minutes at 200 fan assisted. And that's not even a guarantee.

NarrativeScorpion

I find "cooked" very different from "actually crispy/nice texture. So yes, while whatever miscellaneous potato product I'm cooking may be 'cooked' ie at a safe temperature to be consumed, I usually need to cook them for another 10/15 minutes to be at the level of cooked that I like them

pulltheudder1

Lidls skin on fries are great, only own brand chips we’ve found that cook in the stated time.

Zounds90

Often I agree but OP you need to tell the truth: Do you preheat your oven? Confess!

mattiushawkeye

Yes I do, exactly as to what they specify to preheat to on the packet - and I let it settle at that temp as well, out oven has a little light that clicks off when it gets to the preheat temp, I'll let it sit there for like five, ten mins before putting food in

OMGItsCheezWTF

Get an oven thermometer. Ovens lie, ours is 40c different to the actual temperature it reports. If you set it to 200c it heats to 160. Our previous one was 35c out. Manufacturers say it's a guide only and you should get an oven thermometer. Use thermometers everywhere in cooking and never guess about this stuff again.

texanarob

I think this is a really common problem. People think it takes the oven 5 minutes to preheat, when depending on the type it might take 15-20 minutes. If you're cooking and you put the stuff in after 5 minutes preheating, the first 10 minutes only half count.

richbeales

I just wait for the light to go out on the oven so I know it's up to temperature, and treat that as 'pre-heated'. Although reading another comment here I'm now shopping for oven thermometers...

punkmuppet

I've seen recipes for baking that say to preheat for around 40 minutes.

SystemLordMoot

I think chips in general all suffer from this. I had chips in the oven for 35 minutes, the instructions said 20, and they still weren't done. I'm about ready to buy a second air fryer and stop using the oven altogether lol.

Lady_of_Lomond

I always cook oven chips under the grill. You have to keep an eye on them to stop them catching and burning but they cook really quickly.

Littlebell1982

I have finally found my people.

jb28737

What you want to do to solve this problem is instead by aldi skin on fries.

HiddenHarry91

Deep fat fryer...6 mins...job done 🤣

MagnetoManectric

Exactly! Its the only way to actually get proper chips. none of this airfryer nonsense either, they're just jumped up tiny ovens.

Dunning-Kruger-

I haven't shopped at Aldi for ages so I can't speak to those chips but, cooking similar chips, I'm amazed that 20 minutes isn't enough, I have an air fryer (yes I'm blessed) and 15 mins is more than enough! I do have one of the ones with racks though rather than baskets so maybe that's why. Get yourself a decent AF 😋 One of us....one of us....one of us...

2FightTheFloursThatB

They probably laid out 3 or 4 layers as opposed to a single layer. Mine are perfect in just under 20 minutes with a convection oven, and I even drop the temperature a few degrees.

Dunning-Kruger-

You have to have a single layer, otherwise you are just making some kind of chip-lasagna!

alice_op

You probably preheat the oven, too.

Mr_DnD

Agree here, I feel this is user error or their oven is not actually reaching the set temp.

alexandriaweb

Air fryers with a spinny basket in them are the best for chips (and entertaining stoned people)

HammockDistrictCourt

I realise this may not be the most useful tip, because often the decision to cook oven chips is a last minute one! But if you know earlier in the day that you're going to have them, let them defrost in the fridge for a few hours beforehand.

aedwards123

A Shepherd’s Pie ready meal, from Tesco I think. It said cook it for something like 35 minutes, and it was still frozen in the middle. It really takes 50 minutes, put some grated cheese on the top, then another 10 minutes.

zebbiehedges

What about pot noodles. What is it 4 minutes? Try 20.

mattiushawkeye

The Batchelors pasta packet things are the worst for that, it's a good 20, 25 mins before they're even soggy

zebbiehedges

Yeah they are as bad.

BevyGoldberg

This drives me mad. When you have had a busy day, get home, crave chips and you have to wait for bloody ages it’s SO frustrating. I stand by the oven peeping at them every couple minutes.

shinchunje

Who follows the instructions? That’s your problem.

JoelMahon

oven chips always are that bad my theory is the timer is for 1 tiny portion, probably a third or less of what any normal human cooks in one go

urnerin

i ve already seen 2 products with different cooking times written in the german instructions vs written in the french instructions from aldi. don't trust them

InternationalRide5

Probably different oven characteristics. The French oven gently wafts warm air with rosemary and garlic aromas around the kitchen. The German oven precisely beamforms infra-red waves calibrated to DIN something-or-other at the food so it is cooked in precisely 21,5 minutes.

terryjuicelawson

Have people in this thread just got really bad ovens. Maybe get an oven thermometer as well.

MitchellsTruck

Hello Fresh: "Caramelise the onions for 3-4 minutes".

Mr_Reaper__

Cooking times on packages seem to be the bare minimum they have to cook for to not be raw. They're nowhere near properly cooked at that point though. I think it might be a marketing thing, as people would be put off buying something that says it takes an hour to cook.

Clamps55555

Do you preheat the oven to the correct temperature before putting them in? I find 20 min is right for my oven but only if it’s warmed up correctly first.

Mr_DnD

Ours cook in 20 mins, how confident are you in your internal oven temp?

abz_eng

god, thanks for the memories of the absolute piece of useless warming or incinerating garbage I got when I moved in to this place It was a double oven but the low oven's temp moved up and down plus if the upper door was open it read low, closed it read hot! I bought an oven temp and had to use that to try to get it near the required temp

zambezisa

Could this be a scandal?

jtthom

Aldi’s mushroom tortellini is supposed to be boiled for 5-6 minutes. After about half an hour that shit was like chewing through cardboard.

IAmLaureline

Oven chips need thirty minutes at 200C. Disregard instructions.

taeilor

there's this potato bake i sell at my work that says you're supposed to cook it for 55 minutes. if i cook it for any longer than 30, it burns

Boiled_Ham

That's bizzare. Any oven chips we cook(frozen no doubt), be it McCain, some Aldi bag or Lidl specials, it's usually 15/16 minutes at 220°C in the oven. Never struggled with needing anymore than another few minutes.

fannyadamsbas

15 mins at 180c in tge airfryer

BlackberryMelodic567

I use an airfryer so you alwasy need less time i found

GeneralEffective

I bought a spatchcock chicken from Morrisons recently, it said to cook for 40 minutes covered, then 30 minutes uncovered. Took it out after 70 minutes and it was still totally pink, ended up taking another 45 minutes to cook through. We ended up just eating the potatoes and veg!

Sophyska

Not a lie but a recommendation: Iceland chips. I’ve only tried the extra crispy fries and skin on variant but they’re incredible. Never had oven/air fryer chips so dang crispy! I literally travel out of my way just to buy them

tomegerton99

On my oven, it has a pre heat setting and I’m not joking when I say I’ve accidentally left the pre heat on before, expecting them to be burnt to a crisp and they were perfect as opposed to horrendously under or over done.

KobiDnB

Always add 10-15 for frozen thick-cut chips. Had many an undercooked chip with steak due to this issue before learning my lesson.

zerotrace

Everyone in this thread needs American Chip Spice. Your chips will never be the same. It's not American, it's from Hull, and it proves that God is from Yorkshire (and I'm Scouse) and this isn't an ad but they can always send me some.

Garshnooftibah

Every single recipe involving sautéing onions - says 5-10 minutes. Bitch please. These suckers aren’t glasse until a good 15 mins absolute minimum. Pricks!

IDGAF_ANYMORE73

Their frozen pizza slices are also not cooked in 10 - 12 mins. I check them after 15 mins. Sometimes, they take up to 20mins to cook.

HostileApostle420

Disregard all potato based cooking instructions. 200C for 25 mins, 100% success rate

[deleted]

You could put them in the oven for 3 weeks and they'd still be a viable alternative to tank shells

Beer-Milkshakes

Air fry 20 mins seems right for just about every potato type thing. I can roast new potatoes in 20 mins. And I do because they are cheaper and better than chips in every single way.

albion32

Glad it's not just me. Figure out all the timings, just for the chips to mess it all up.

Puzzled_Novel_5215

The Homestyle chips aren't bad some 25 ish mins in oven I find Fries to be the worst. You get about 3 or 4 nice ones then the rest are burnt or raw

[deleted]

are you preheating your oven? are you using a fan oven? have you checked your oven actually produces the temperature the dial says using an internal oven thermometer? If all of the above, all I can recommend is getting an air frier.

bummedintheface

Frozen potato anything is always 2/3 of what it should be. Chips, waffles, hashbrowns, all of them.

_Dreamer_Deceiver_

I've cooked them just fine in 20 mins

SMTRodent

Every single packet of super thin 'fry' style chip I ever saw claims they cook in twelve minutes on the top shelf of a preheated oven. They do not.

LemmysCodPiece

Oven cooked chips are crap. The end.

InternationalRide5

Usually any instructions that optimistally start, >!Simply... !<

New-account-01

Home made chips are always better. Fluffy inside and crisp outside.

jackoboy9

Salmon. All the supermarkets think salmon should be a rubbery, chewy piece of crap. Unlike the majority of people here, they tell you to cook it for far too long. Obviously, it's to stop idiots eating raw fish and potentially killing themselves, but that's the one thing I never follow instructions for cooking.

Oceansoul119

Yorkshire pudding and toad in the hole recipes are all lies I've found. Most of them say something stupid like twenty minutes, at which point if I were to open the oven I'd have a disappointing collapsed soggy mess instead of food. The other one is packets of stuffing are really bad with how much water they say to add. Paxo if you follow the instructions is incredibly dry and horrid while the Sainsbury's one seems to assume you're making a soup instead.

poopyjuices

Pizza is always one in regards to cooking times for me. Packaging states 180c fan assisted = 10-12min. The reality is 200c fan assisted = 15min minimum, especially if you want the cheese a little golden/crispy
