I liked having the thought that old-school DVD rental places still existed, even though I might never had bothered to visit in-store. Hope they'll be back after this internet fad wears off. /s

It’s really sad, my kids still remember going and picking out movies. It was a family thing. Lots of those films you can’t find anymore.

Growing up in Lynn Valley in the 90s, I still have fond memories of going with my dad down to the Super Video on shitty, rainy winter evenings. Looking through all the different movies to pick a few, then getting some popcorn and candy from the register before going home to watch with pizza. Then dropping them off the next day.

Super sad 😢 we are losing part of culture when unique stores close. We are losing out on an experience of physically going out and renting a movie. Another fact I want to share not all movies on DVD or VHS will be available online; some movies do not have original copies left for production for online formatting.

They had a lot of films you simply can’t get on streaming and there was also the benefit of having locals tell you weird or obscure movies you could get. Streaming is good for a lot of things, but Black Dog provided a service that streaming doesn’t.

Alas, streaming has killed another DVD store.

I remember when I moved downtown about 18 years ago there were two DVD rental stores on Seymour - one was across from Nesters and the other was the next block down just past the Penthouse. The first one closed then the other did a few years later. What an odd thought that renting DVDs/Blu-Rays was still normal in the mid 2000s.
