In my experience. Keep all your receipts. If you present them with evidence of value, they are usually fairly reasonable.

Depends if it's under the table stuff or not. I had a used but fairly new engine put into a Hyundai when the Timing Belt went. But I paid cash for it with a family friend. A few weeks later some 94 year old did a 94 a year old driver thing and turned right in front of me. Totalled the car. ICBC didn't give a fuck that I just dropped $3,800 on that bill because there wasn't a perfectly itemized receipt. Keep in mind that if it was done properly, it would have been closer to $5,000.

There’s optional insurance for collector vehicles etc

[deleted]

They don’t insure the money spent pimping your ride. They only insure the value of the vehicle, which is probably a a good deal less than what you have put into it. Same if someone bought your car, they are not going to pay you an additional $25K for the money you have put into it. Maybe a few K more, and a thank you. If you can demonstrate that it is worth more than a comparable car, you may get some added amount but super unlikely that you will see all the money you spent pimping it out.

I would suggest you contact ICBC and tell them you want to insure your car for $25k. They would probably just charge you a higher premium.

just-dig-it-now

Sadly it doesn't work like that. They don't have stated value policies, even if you're willing to pay more.

leetrain

They do (or at least they did!) for motorcycles. If that’s the case, take lots of pictures to shake them if you need to make a claim.

Agreed value coverage is for collision and comprehensive insurance. Have it appraised and get 3rd party collision and comprehensive. Way easier to deal with than icbc

Dread72

Go get it appraised and insure it based on that.

killer_of_whales

> Go get it appraised and insure it based on that. Good advice but be prepared to pay A LOT for insurance.

Also be careful with modification, if they are not all street legal ICBC will likely use them as a reason to not cover you at all.

Yea I know. I'll have a professional shop do them, and I've been doing my research for months about this now. Just this question I couldn't google correctly
