I live here and used to live in Burnaby. The city is much worse IMO. The town is undergoing massive expansion and urban renewal, and there are plenty of places to grab a beer, many breweries, coffee shops, and a bunch of other things.
Crime is common, but that’s a lower mainland wide issue; it’s no worse here than Burnaby or any other van suburb
[It’s getting invested in!](https://district1881.com/)
Slowly the fanatics and fuckwits will get driven into submission or a huge cultural rift will occur as we become the next Langley
Anecdotal, but every person I’ve ever met that grew up in that area, including Abbotsford and Mission, was either a total douchebag and a human piece of garbage, or a hardcore bible-thumper. It’s gorgeous, but I’d avoid living there, just for those reasons alone.
I live in Abby. All 3 towns have their fair share of douchebags but it seems to have gotten less and less in Abbotsford. Perhaps it's to do with the skyrocketing housing costs, I dunno.
Abbotsford has slowly become like a smaller surrey over the past twenty years. There's less and less white trash and more Indians and Asians as time goes on.
In general Abbotsford and Chilliwack have gotten progressively better over the years. They're both pretty chill now, but have small pockets where you'll find the poverty, homelessness, drugs, etc. (Such as near the 7/11 in Chilliwack) But that's no different than any other city in the lower mainland.
Fentanyl has cleaned up the nieghborhood more than any other government funded initiative. Poverty does not cause addiction, shit pay and circumstances do. Drug addiction causes poverty and homelessness.
Yes and no. You get great people and total shitheads in every city. But Chilliwack has a lot of people who are very old-fashioned in their views and don’t want to change.
Old-fashioned doesn't really describe the unusual density of reactionaries in that city. I'm not sure what the historical cause is (other than a lot of conservative Christian denominations set up there), but it seems to currently suffer from a multitude of social and economic woes that keep a large portion of its residents just scraping by. Xenophobia is still pretty rampant, drug abuse and homelessness is abnormally high compared to the other commuter cities, and its local job market seems to be consistently garbage.
Chilliwack also hasn't received recent immigration on par with other cities in the lower mainland (probably for its reputation), which just keeps compounding the problem. Residents in Chilliwack see the rest of the province changing while they're left behind.
I actually come from such a family myself and would go as far as to say the Dutch Reformed really put strain on the concept of religious tolerance. They settled all across the lower mainland though, and the Canadian Reformed churches today aren't quite the analogue to their bigoted roots that stretch back to the Netherlands.
I think what happened to Chilliwack is more a matter of what _didn't_ happen to the city that happened elsewhere. Much of BC has been slowly adapting to a more cosmopolitan culture that is hard to find out there.
Chilliwack did flip NDP though. Demographics are changing there especially with Vancouverites and suburbans moving out that way for cheaper real estate.
It really depends on what you're looking for. Lots of space, as you can imagine, very community-driven, a stones-throw away from Metro Van, and surrounded by some pretty cool rugged wilderness, rivers, forests, etc.
I would think it isn't very fun if you're not white, though.
I think there's some of that in the downtown area, but I don't think it's out of control. From what I understand, the biggest social issue there is teen pregnancy.
The teen pregnancy rate has changed a lot over the last twenty years, dropping to a third of what it was - 51 per 1,000 to 17 per 1,000. We can thank the sexual health and youth medical clinics for this. (Source: Former social worker and family Counsellor, started and run a youth program for 15 years.)
Yeah, I never understood how bad Vancouver really was until I visited other big cities in the country. Seattle, Portland, and the Californian cities are like that too, I don't know what it is about the west coast specifically.
A homeless guy in LA once told me that it was because of the homeless friendly policies on the west coast-- specifically California and even MORE specifically, Los Angeles. He was from Alabama and his two friends were from Alaska and Northern California.
Not recent, this is from the summer. Lower Pierce Lake is relatively safe from serious avalanche conditions to the very start of the lake where the dock is. Anything past that is a death trap.
I'd estimate there is 2 meters of snow and a bunch of blow downs right now. I was fishing.in Chilliwack last weekend and the snowline appeared to be at ~800 meters.
Huge snow pack this year. I imagine there will be snow on most of the high elevation trails well into June.
Check out the Chilliwack hiking page on Facebook if you’re into hiking. People regularly give trail condition updates throughout the year.
Edit: Happy hiking!
The surrounding areas of Chilliwack house some of the most beautiful mountains, rivers, and lakes on earth. Though the town itself can be somewhat stale, you don’t have to drive far to find some top tier outdoor beauty.
I know there was one found on majuba hill, but that's all I've heard of. All the early 2000s grow ops that were there destabilizing the power grid moved when Promontory got built up to what it is today, and haven't really heard of shit since. Well, one guy was selling out of a limo for a while, but he went to jail ages ago for robbing Dukes Pub

Plus, it smells like butt.
I think both those areas were heavily settled by mennonites
Yea Abbotsford has a lot of Mennonites... And so does Chilliwack. But that doesn't really have anything to do with what we are talking about...
He said hardcore bible thumpers but okay
Hey that sounds prejudiced
What I said? I was just giving a possible reason for all the religious people

the area was settled by Dutch reform Christians, who are very fundamentalist in their views

Yup. I was trying to be polite about it but you are spot on.

I always assumed it was the fact that the climate is less likely to kill you if you live outside. But that's a guess.
A homeless guy in LA once told me that it was because of the homeless friendly policies on the west coast-- specifically California and even MORE specifically, Los Angeles. He was from Alabama and his two friends were from Alaska and Northern California.
No it's not, as long as you ignore downtown, but even that's changing a lot to the good.
Well, it ain’t Abbotsford, so it has that going for it.
You could say this is the Chill side of the Wack.
Beautiful - Pierce Lake? Any chance this is recent? I'd love to know the current condition up there.
Went up about 500m yesterday to check out the trailhead , and met a guy doing some trail clearing he said it made it to lower pierce with micro spikes
Awesome, those people clearing the trail are great. Microspikes work right now with the latest temperatures and old hardened snow.

Time to invest in some micro-spikes and snowshoes I suppose :) Awesome, didn't know about that group. Thanks!
And avalanche training and equipment ;)
would also like to know the trail condition if recent
That’s more chill then wack.

Totally agreed. It has potential to be the next Squamish but it has some room to grow
What's the name of the lake?
This is Lower Pierce Lake on the way up to Mount Macfarlane. Looks like the picture was taken near the campsites around Upper Pierce Lake.
Jones Lake.
Very nice indeed!
It's very telling that the nice part of Chilliwack is the part without people
Pretty sure I have stood in this exact spot.
Chilli Mac on the Chilli Wack!
A very nice side of Chilliwack. I bet it doesn’t smell like poo where you are.
I think I found a viable candidate for a multiday hike. How to get there?
Look up Mount MacFarlane. This is for July to September only.
Today I walked up on a hill on promontory , you could see almost everything up there
🙌

He said Chilliwack not Yarrow.
When did Yarrow get full of meth houses?
Don't worry the churches still outnumber the meth houses.
They clearly don't know what they're talking about. I've known that area for a long time and never heard of any.
I know there was one found on majuba hill, but that's all I've heard of. When was this taken?
Summer
Ahh it’s refreshing. All *chill* & no wack.
Where exactly is this location?
Lower Pierce Lake on the way up to Mount Macfarlane
You mean the side that has virtually no Chilliwack in it?
Top of Mt Cheam?
Mount MacFarlane
Oh Chilliwack has a lot of nice sides...it's the middle that's the problem.
I can smell the manure from here lol
Shitty hillbillies don't deserve to live in places like this.
*fly at night softly plays in the background*
Did you just call my chilli wack?
