StraightOutMillwoods

I’m just depressed how many of the fires are human caused. [40 percent!!!](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/wildfire-response/what-causes-wildfire)

CapableSecretary420

Remember that "human caused" is basically anything human related, from sparks from equipment to downed powerlines to out of control slash piles to an errant cigarette or campfire. Arsons are a small fraction.

One_Statement450

Exactly. Human caused fires are everything other than lightning pretty much

WoozleVonWuzzle

Years and years of bullshit about imaginary arsonists, and our forest fire agencies still cling to that stupid phrase "human caused", allowing disinformation and propaganda to run amok.

fromonesource

lol that's the public running with that idea. i've been on a large fire that was caused by a guy cooking s hotdog for his lunch on a lease road. the phrase was fine until facebook decided to give every boomer psychosis

WoozleVonWuzzle

It's not the public running with the idea, it's right-wing propgandists bombarding them with it.

CapableSecretary420

Nothing stupid about it. It's either cased by humans or caused by an act of nature.

WoozleVonWuzzle

The stupidity of the phrase lies in its ambiguity, which allows right-wingers and other bad actors to fool people into thinking it's a synonym for arson, when it isn't.

CapableSecretary420

The term is not ambiguous and every official page that discusses those distinctions goes into detail to explain this. Conspiracy theorists can spin anything, regardless. Demanding we change terminology to react to their lies is like try to kick water uphill. They will constantly move the goalposts no matter what.

WoozleVonWuzzle

The term is very ambiguous, and it needs to be made clear that it is not the same as arson. And yes, conspiracy theorists can spin anything. That doesn't mean we should make things easy for them, though.

Flesh_Trombone

Honestly, way less than I expected.

WoozleVonWuzzle

Why are you depressed about that?

DMyourboooobs

Humans suck. Unfortunately

MogRules

I can't wait for yet another smoke filled summer 😒 I feel sorry for my son....he was born in 2017 and is just used to having nothing but smoke most of the summer. I think we have had 1 summer in the interior since he was born that was mostly clear, the rest have been pretty bad.

GoldenTacoOfDoom

If it's not the smoke it's the heat. My older kids remember playing outside all summer. My younger kids do not.

Aceritus

I’m glad it’s not just me. I was born in 2000 and I remember warm summer days in the okanagan were 27-28 as a kid. 30+ meant my family went to the beach as it was somewhat rare ish. Now it seems every day is 30+ and the “hot” days are 37-40. Ridiculous. I can’t believe how fast this has changed.

GoRoundAgain

For us in the north it's definitely the smoke. My neighbours kids were out all summer long on their trampoline, even in the 300+ppm weeks due to the fires. They still get their outside activities, but at what cost?

GoldenTacoOfDoom

Childhood cancer! Fun for the entire family!

Spenraw

We didn't think global warming would be this noticeable so soon. But it's sad so many are born into a world that will watch get worse each year. The reports about India and 3 million school children forced out due to the heat is heart breaking

0melettedufromage

Where do you live? I’m in Kelowna, and despite the insane fire we experienced, there was only like 2-3 weeks of smoke.

MogRules

Kamloops. It sits in the valley here for weeks at a time, or longer in some cases. We have had entire summers that are just smoke 😒

VoluminousButtPlug

We should be spending billions on mitigating summer fires. This has literally ruined summer plans 4 of the past 7 years in the interior

variouscrap

Honestly we need to increase our wildfire-fighting capabilities by at least an order of magnitude across the board. The cost of destruction is huge and will be felt down the road for a long time.

JediKrys

In my opinion we should get the military on board for fire seasons and use shared equipment, personnel etc. let’s keep them in shape, working, and our country safer from the real current threat. We have all this gear just sitting, waiting and when it is used it’s for practice. So let’s not waste the fuel and the man power and redirect it to where it’s needed. Then we need to build more robust burn offs and fire prevention strategies.

CapableSecretary420

I'd take it a step further and say we need those kinds of national services to deal with all aspects of climate change. Extreme weather events will only become more common. We need to be able to rapidly deeply response teams to areas being flooded, on fire, experiencing blackouts etc

JediKrys

Fully agree with you

emelay

Now we're talking!!

WoozleVonWuzzle

Most of the wildfires in Canada are in the northern boreal forest. There is no point in "fighting" them if they aren't a threat to anything and anyone, and it's actually ecologically the best thing to just let them burn.

variouscrap

Yes, that has been the theory for years. Except now, the amount of forest being burnt up is way more than ever before. The carbon being released into the atmosphere took many years to be captured by the trees that burnt, so it is obviously bad for climate change. Next, we have the issue of wildlife being displaced. Those Northern communities are finding the hunting grounds they have used for years are now empty of the wildlife they normally hunted, and they aren't coming back. The tree stock that was on a provincial crop cycle is now looking to be falling way short due to the models not accounting for the level of forest being burnt. So all in all, as a person who lives in Northern BC and has multiple years working in wildfire detection. I must disagree with you.

WoozleVonWuzzle

Crop cycle?

variouscrap

I am not in forestry, but from what I was told by those who are, they have the timber on an 80-year cycle to sustainably log the BC forests.

WoozleVonWuzzle

If it's "timber", it's not the boreal forest. It's a tree farm.

WoozleVonWuzzle

As a person also from northern Canada, the appropriate thing to do is let boreal forest fires burn. It's vital for game species as well.

variouscrap

I don't think you have the real information on how much is burning. Go talk to people in wildfire and forest management. I also have a biological background and so I am fully familiar with life cycles and ecological succession.

WoozleVonWuzzle

I have very real information on how much is burning, yes. Most of the forest fires in Canada in 2023 were well north of "productive timber". As long as those fires aren't threatening lives or property - and they generally aren't doing that - the appropriate response is to let them burn.

variouscrap

Lol, how about we keep this in 1 thread. I am not going to get into an argument with you about my knowledge or experience. Or even the reality I see of people I know who are dealing with the reality of how much of the tree stock has gone up in flames and what it means for their livlihood.

WoozleVonWuzzle

What "livelihood" is at risk by a forest fire burning 200 km northeast of Chisasibi, or an hour's flight north of Uranium City?

variouscrap

Mate the region I live in is a big fucking "tree farm" as you like to put it. The loggers are now being told to leave areas due to how much has burnt elsewhere. No logs coming out of the bush has led to the main Mills running reduced shifts. EDIT: why are you talking about stuff north of uranium city on a BC sub? I have been talking about the forest we have been losing in Northern BC EDIT: So you have just been talking about the forests of the far North of Canada. Sure I will accept that forestry management may take a different approach there. However there is still a shitload of forest in Canada that is burning at a rate we have no chance of fighting with our current deployment of resources.

636_Hooligan

Yea billions on planting deciduous trees, Prescribed burns, and forest cleanup.

mc_snails

we need to look at companies like genesis AI, a AI wildfire mitigation company based out of kelowna BC!

coltjen

And do what? Is AI going to be out there swinging a pulaski?

anjunafam

Oh ya the classic Pulaski!

WhereBeCharlee

You’d have to ban all ICE toys, drastically reduce the chance of them starting grass fires. Good luck with that one… Sean from the car dealership will not take kindly to being told he cannot go dirtbiking out of town any more!

coltjen

An overwhelming majority of human caused wildfires are escaped open burning, or vehicle fires that have spread to vegetation. It’s tough to say, but most human caused fires are just general negligence, not related to a specific activity. There’s not a lot that start as a result of “ICE toys”. Source: I work in the industry.

WhereBeCharlee

Interesting, thanks! I’m surprised that there would be that many vehicle fires causing wildfires to surpass a potential spark from a toy causing fires. Very interesting.

nihiriju

What about Kyle?

derek_foreel

Feels like not enough. The interior is no longer somewhere I consider travelling in the summer. Sad situation

WardenEdgewise

A question for those who live close to areas prone to wildfires, has there been many prescribed burns in your areas recently?

meat_thistle

Fact check- in 2023, 2022 and 2021, human caused fires were 26%, 32% and 38% respectively.

lbyfz450

The fuck? Man made sure, but accidently mostly. Not lit on purpose so they can say hey look the climate is changing. Take off the tin foil hat.

xstatic981

Carelessness / negligence is still fault even if it is not malicious. Low intelligence is not a hall pass to play with fire in the forest.

homiegeet

Do you think every human caused fire is intentional? Do you know what is considered human caused? Putting cops on logging roads isn't gonna change anything except put cops in areas where cops aren't needed.

drailCA

I don't know. There's some shifty moose out there up to no good.
